Search

We explore possible signatures for charged lepton flavour violation (LFV), sparticle discovery at the LHC and dark matter (DM) searches in grand unified theories (GUTs) based on SU(5), flipped SU(5) (FSU(5)) and SU(4)$_c \times $SU(2)$_L \times $SU(2)$_R$ (4-2-2). We assume that soft supersymmetry-breaking terms preserve the group symmetry at some high input scale, and focus on the non-universal effects on different matter representations generated by gauge interactions at lower scales, as well as the charged LFV induced in Type-1 see-saw models of neutrino masses. We identify the different mechanisms that control the relic DM density in the various GUT models, and contrast their LFV and LHC signatures. The SU(5) and 4-2-2 models offer good detection prospects both at the LHC and in LFV searches, though with different LSP compositions, and the SU(5) and FSU(5) models offer LFV within the current reach. The 4-2-2 model allows chargino and gluino coannihilations with neutralinos, and the former offer good detection prospects for both the LHC and LFV, while gluino coannihilations lead to lower LFV rates. Our results indicate that LFV is a powerful tool that complements LHC and DM searches, providing significant insights into the sparticle spectra and neutrino mass parameters in different models., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

We employ a variety of symmetry breaking patterns in $SO(10)$ and $E_6$ Grand Unified Theories to demonstrate the appearance of topological defects including magnetic monopoles, strings, and necklaces. We show that independent of the symmetry breaking pattern, a topologically stable superheavy monopole carrying a single unit of Dirac charge as well as color magnetic charge is always present. Lighter intermediate mass topologically stable monopoles carrying two or three quanta of Dirac charge can appear in $SO(10)$ and $E_6$ models respectively. These lighter monopoles as well as topologically stable intermediate scale strings can survive an inflationary epoch. We also show the appearance of a novel necklace configuration in $SO(10)$ broken to the Standard Model via $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$. It consists of $SU(4)_c$ and $SU(2)_R$ monopoles connected by flux tubes. Necklaces consisting of monopoles and antimonopoles joined together by flux tubes are also identified. Even in the absence of topologically stable strings, a monopole-string system can temporarily appear. This system decays by emitting gravity waves and we provide an example in which the spectrum of these waves is strongly peaked around $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ with $\Omega_{\rm gw}h^2\simeq 10^{-12}$. We explore the implications of LHC and cold dark matter searches for supersymmetric particle mass spectra in two different grand unified models with left-right symmetry, $SO(10)$ and $ SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ (4-2-2). We identify characteristic differences between the two scenarios, which imply distinct correlations between experimental measurements and the particular structure of the GUT group. The gauge structure of 4-2-2 enhances significantly the allowed parameter space as compared to $SO(10)$, giving rise to a variety of coannihilation scenarios compatible with the LHC data, LSP dark matter and the ongoing muon g-2 experiment., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We explore the sparticle mass spectra including LSP dark matter within the framework of supersymmetric $SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ (422) models, taking into account the constraints from extensive LHC and cold dark matter searches. The soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters at $M_{GUT}$ can be non-universal, but consistent with the 422 symmetry. We identify a variety of coannihilation scenarios compatible with LSP dark matter, and study the implications for future supersymmetry searches and the ongoing muon g-2 experiment., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figs

We present $\psi'$MSSM, a model based on a $U(1)_{\psi'}$ extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The gauge symmetry $U(1)_{\psi'}$, also known as $U(1)_N$, is a linear combination of the $U(1)_\chi$ and $U(1)_\psi$ subgroups of $E_6$. The model predicts the existence of three sterile neutrinos with masses $\lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}$, if the $U(1)_{\psi'}$ breaking scale is of order 10 TeV. Their contribution to the effective number of neutrinos at nucleosynthesis is $\Delta N_{\nu}\simeq 0.29$. The model can provide a variety of possible cold dark matter candidates including the lightest sterile sneutrino. If the $U(1)_{\psi'}$ breaking scale is increased to $10^3~{\rm TeV}$, the sterile neutrinos, which are stable on account of a $Z_2$ symmetry, become viable warm dark matter candidates. The observed value of the standard model Higgs boson mass can be obtained with relatively light stop quarks thanks to the D-term contribution from $U(1)_{\psi'}$. The model predicts diquark and diphoton resonances which may be found at an updated LHC. The well-known $\mu$ problem is resolved and the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe can be generated via leptogenesis. The breaking of $U(1)_{\psi'}$ produces superconducting strings that may be present in our galaxy. We show how successful supersymmetric hybrid inflation is realized in realistic models where the resolution of the minimal supersymmetric standard model mu problem is intimately linked with axion physics. The scalar fields that accompany the axion, such as the saxion, are closely monitored during and after inflation to ensure that the axion isocurvature perturbations lie below the observational limits. The scalar spectral index n_s is about 0.96 - 0.97, while the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, a canonical measure of gravity waves, lies well below the observable range in our example. The axion domain walls are inflated away, and depending on the axion decay constant f_a and the magnitude of the mu parameter, the axions and/or the lightest supersymmetric particle compose the dark matter in the universe. Inspired by the 750 GeV diphoton state recently reported by ATLAS and CMS, we propose a U(1)_{B-L} extension of the MSSM which predicts the existence of four spin zero resonance states that are degenerate in mass in the supersymmetric limit. Vector-like fields, a gauge singlet field, as well as the MSSM Higgsinos are prevented from acquiring arbitrary large masses by a U(1) R-symmetry. Indeed, these masses can be considerably lighter than the Z' gauge boson mass. We study the implications of the inverse seesaw mechanism (ISS) on the sparticle spectrum in the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) and Non-Universal Higgs Model (NUHM2). Employing the maximal value of the Dirac Yukawa coupling involving the up type Higgs doublet provides a 2-3 GeV enhancement of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass. This effect permits one to have lighter colored sparticles in the CMSSM and NUHM2 scenarios with LSP neutralino, which can be tested at LHC14. This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Higgs Boson working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass). We identify the key elements of a precision Higgs physics program and document the physics potential of future experimental facilities as elucidated during the Snowmass study. We study Higgs couplings to gauge boson and fermion pairs, double Higgs production for the Higgs self-coupling, its quantum numbers and $CP$-mixing in Higgs couplings, the Higgs mass and total width, and prospects for direct searches for additional Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model. We consider a phenomenological extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) which incorporates non-minimal chaotic inflation, driven by a quadratic potential in conjunction with a linear term in the frame function. Inflation is followed by a Peccei-Quinn phase transition, based on renormalizable superpotential terms, which resolves the strong CP and mu problems of MSSM and provide masses lower than about 10^12 GeV for the right-handed (RH) (s)neutrinos. Baryogenesis occurs via non-thermal leptogenesis, realized by the out-of-equilibrium decay of the RH sneutrinos which are produced by the inflaton's decay. Confronting our scenario with the current observational data on the inflationary observables, the light neutrino masses, the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the gravitino limit on the reheat temperature, we constrain the strength of the gravitational coupling to rather large values (~45-2950) and the Dirac neutrino masses to values between about 1 and 10 GeV., Comment: Final version

We analyze the adjoint field inflation in supersymmetric (SUSY) SU(5) model. In minimal SUSY SU(5) hybrid inflation monopoles are produced at the end of inflation. We therefore explore the non-minimal model of inflation based on SUSY SU(5), like shifted hybrid, which provides a natural solution for the monopole problem. We find that the supergravity corrections with non-minimal Kahler potential are crucial to realize the central value of the scalar spectral index n_s ~ 0.96 consistent with the seven year WMAP data. The tensor to scalar ratio r is quite small, taking on values r < 10^{-5}. Due to R-symmetry massless SU(3) octet and SU(2) triplet Higgs bosons are present and could spoil for gauge coupling unification. We explore extensions of the MSSM in which TeV scale vector-like multiplets can mediate observable n-anti-n oscillations, without causing conflict with the proton decay experiments, with a U(1) symmetry playing an important role. We briefly summarize and update a class of inflationary models from the early eighties based on a quartic (Coleman-Weinberg) potential for a gauge singlet scalar (inflaton) field. For vacuum energy scales comparable to the grand unification scale, the scalar spectral index n_s=0.94-0.97, in very good agreement with the WMAP three year results. Minimal supersymmetric hybrid inflation based on a minimal Kahler potential predicts a spectral index n_s\gsim 0.98. On the other hand, WMAP three year data prefers a central value n_s \approx 0.95. We propose a class of supersymmetric hybrid inflation models based on the same minimal superpotential but with a non-minimal Kahler potential. A gauged U(1)_B-L symmetry predicts three right handed handed neutrinos and its spontaneous breaking automatically yields the seesaw mechanism. In a supersymmetric setting this breaking can be nicely linked with inflation to yield deltaT/ T proportional to (M_B-L / M_P)^2, where M_B-L (M_P) denote the B-L breaking (Planck) scale. Thus M_B-L is estimated to be of order 10^16 GeV, and the heaviest right handed neutrino mass is less than or of order 10^14 GeV. A second right handed neutrino turns out to have a mass of order 10-10^2 T_r, where T_r (<~10^9 GeV) denotes the reheat temperature. A U(1) R symmetry plays an essential role in implementing inflation and leptogenesis, resolving the MSSM mu problem and eliminating dimension five nucleon decay. An unbroken Z_2 subgroup plays the role of matter parity. The scalar spectral index n_s=0.99+-0.01 for the simplest models, while in smooth hybrid inflation n_s>=0.97. The allowed range of parameters for supersymmetric hybrid inflation and its extensions are investigated. We present a new inflation model in which the inflationary scenario including subsequent reheating is determined in part by a U(1)_R\times Z_n symmetry. A preinflation epoch can be introduced to yield, among other things, a running spectral index indicated by the WMAP analysis. Following a baryogenesis scenario proposed by Lazarides, Panagiotakopoulos and Shafi, we show how the observed baryon asymmetry can be explained via resonant leptogenesis in a class of supersymmetric models with an intermediate mass scale M_I<~10^9 GeV. It involves the out of equilibrium decay of heavy (<~M_I) right handed neutrinos at a temperature close to the TeV supersymmetry breaking scale. Leptogenesis scenarios in supersymmetric hybrid inflation models are considered. Sufficient lepton asymmetry leading to successful baryogenesis can be obtained if the reheat temperature T_r>10^6 GeV and the superpotential coupling parameter kappa is in the range 10^-6

We reconsider a class of well motivated supersymmetric models in which inflation is associated with the breaking of a gauge symmetry G to H, with the symmetry breaking scale M~10^16 GeV. Starting with a renormalizable superpotential, we include both radiative and supergravity corrections to derive the inflationary potential. The scalar spectral index n_s can exceed unity in some cases, and it cannot be smaller than 0.98 if the number of e-foldings corresponding to the present horizon scale is around 60. Two distinct variations of this scenario are discussed in which non-renormalizable terms allowed by the symmetries are included in the superpotential, and one finds n_s>=0.97. The models discussed feature a tensor to scalar ratio r<~10^-4, while dn_s/dlnk<~10^-3. We discuss a calculable version of brane inflation, in which a set of parallel D-brane and anti-D-brane worlds, initially displaced in extra dimension, slowly attract each other. In the effective four-dimensional theory this slow motion of branes translates into a slow-roll of a scalar field (proportional to their separation) with a flat potential that drives inflation. The number of possible e-foldings is severely constrained. The scalar spectral index is found to be 0.97, while the effective compactification scale is of order $10^{12}$ GeV. We present a solution to the cosmological problem encountered in (supersymmetric) grand unified theories due to copious monopole production at the end of hybrid inflation. By employing thermal inflation ``driven'' by the U(1) axion symmetry, the superheavy monopole flux can be naturally suppressed to values that should be accessible to dedicated large scale experiments. The U(1) axion symmetry also helps generate the right magnitude for the mu term of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. An important by-product is the predicted existence of stable or very long-living fermions possessing intermediate scale masses of order 10^{12} GeV. Their presence is required for implementing thermal inflation, and their stability is due to a Z_2 symmetry. They may constitute a sizable fraction of cold dark matter, and possibly help explain the ultra-high energy cosmic ray events. The rest of cold dark matter may consist of axions. Although our discussion is carried out within the framework of supersymmetric SU(4)_c x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R, it can be extended to other grand unified gauge groups such as SU(3)_c x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R or SO(10)., Comment: 15 pages, Revtex, references added

We show how hybrid inflation can be successfully realized in a supersymmetric model with gauge group G_{PS}= SU(4)_c x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R. By including a non-renormalizable superpotential term, we generate an inflationary valley along which G_{PS} is broken to the standard model gauge group. Thus, catastrophic production of the doubly charged magnetic monopoles, which are predicted by the model, cannot occur at the end of inflation. The results of the cosmic background explorer can be reproduced with natural values (of order 10^{-3}) of the relevant coupling constant, and symmetry breaking scale of G_{PS} close to 10^{16} GeV. The spectral index of density perturbations lies between unity and 0.9. Moreover, the mu-term is generated via a Peccei-Quinn symmetry and proton is practically stable. Baryogenesis in the universe takes place via leptogenesis. The low deuterium abundance constraint on the baryon asymmetry, the gravitino limit on the reheat temperature and the requirement of almost maximal mu neutrino - tau neutrino mixing from SuperKamiokande can be simultaneously met with mu-neutrino, tau-neutrino and heaviest Dirac neutrino masses determined from the large angle MSW resolution of the solar neutrino problem, the SuperKamiokande results and SU(4)_c symmetry respectively., Comment: 29 pages including 7 figures, Latex, version published in JHEP

The supersymmetric sector of minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) possesses a U(1) R-symmetry which contains Z_2 matter parity. Non-zero neutrino masses, consistent with a 'redefined' R-symmetry, are possible through the see-saw mechanism and/or a pair of superheavy (mass M) SU(2)_L triplets with vev of order M^2_W/M. If this R-symmetry is respected by the higher order terms, then baryon number conservation follows as an immediate consequence. In the presence of right handed neutrinos, the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe arises via leptogenesis. We present a minimal string-inspired supersymmetric $SU(4) \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ model, and provide a detailed analysis of the symmetry breaking potential in this model, based on a generalisation of that recently proposed by Dvali, Lazarides and Shafi. The model contains a global U(1) R-symmetry and reduces to the MSSM at low energies. However it improves on the MSSM since it explains the magnitude of its $\mu$ term and gives a prediction for $\tan \beta \simeq m_t/m_b$. It also predicts an essentially stable proton, and contains both `cold' and `hot' dark matter candidates. A period of hybrid inflation above the symmetry breaking scale is also possible in this model. Finally it suggests the existence of `heavy' charge $\pm e/6$ (colored) and $\pm e/2$ (color singlet) states., Comment: 13 pages, Latex

We present a solution of the mu problem within a supersymmetric model based on the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} gauge group. We show that this solution implies a built-in hybrid inflationary scenario, which may result in a successful baryogenesis via leptogenesis. In a supersymmetric left-right symmetric model, inflation, baryogenesis (via leptogenesis) and neutrino oscillations can become closely linked. A familiar ansatz for the neutrino Dirac masses and mixing of the two heaviest families, together with the MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle, imply that 1 eV <_\sim m_{\nu _{\tau }<_\sim 9 eV. The predicted range for the mixing angle \theta _\mu \tau will be partially tested by the Chorus/Nomad experiment. We consider a supersymmetric model of inflation in which the primordial density fluctuations are nearly scale invariant (the spectral index n is approximately 0.98) with amplitude proportional to (M/M_{Planck})^2, where M ~ 10^{16} GeV denotes the scale of the gauge symmetry breaking associated with inflation. The 60 or so e-foldings take place when all relevant scales are close to M, which helps suppress supergravity corrections. We consider a realistic example of supersymmetric grand unification based on $SU(3)_c \times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ in which the electroweak (EW) higgs doublets are `light' as a consequence of the `pseudogoldstone' mechanism. We discuss radiative EW breaking in this model, exploring in particular the `small' (order unity) and `large' $(\approx m_t/m_b)$ $\tan \beta$ regions by studying the variations of $r (\equiv \sqrt{\mu^2_{1,2}/\mu^2_3})$, where $\mu^2_{1,2,3}$ are the well known MSSM parameters evaluated at the GUT scale. We present an extensive comparison of models of structure formation with observations, based on linear and quasi-linear theory. We assume a critical matter density, and study both cold dark matter models and cold plus hot dark matter models. We explore a wide range of parameters, by varying the fraction of hot dark matter $\Omega_{\nu}$, the Hubble parameter $h$ and the spectral index of density perturbations $n$, and allowing for the possibility of gravitational waves from inflation influencing large-angle microwave background anisotropies. New calculations are made of the transfer functions describing the linear power spectrum, with special emphasis on improving the accuracy on short scales where there are strong constraints. For assessing early object formation, the transfer functions are explicitly evaluated at the appropriate redshift. The observations considered are the four-year {\it COBE} observations of microwave background anisotropies, peculiar velocity flows, the galaxy correlation function, and the abundances of galaxy clusters, quasars and damped Lyman alpha systems. Each observation is interpreted in terms of the power spectrum filtered by a top-hat window function. We find that there remains a viable region of parameter space for critical-density models when all the dark matter is cold, though $h$ must be less than 0.5 before any fit is found and $n$ significantly below unity is preferred. Once a hot dark matter component is invoked, a wide parameter space is acceptable, including $n\simeq 1$. The allowed region is characterized by $\Omega_\nu \la 0.35$ and $0.60 \la n \la 1.25$, at 95 per cent confidence on at least one piece of data. There is no useful lower bound on $h$, and for curious combinations of the other parameters it is possible to fit the data with $h$ as high as 0.65., Comment: 19 pages LaTeX file (uses mn.sty). In the context of supersymmetric models, we analyze the production of topological defects at the end of inflation driven by a conjugate pair of inflaton fields which are non-singlets under the continuous symmetry group of the theory. We find that magnetic monopoles of mass on the order of $10^{13}\ GeV$ can survive inflation and be present in our galaxy at an observable level. We explore the implications of possible neutrino oscillations, as indicated by the solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, for the cold plus hot dark matter scenario of large scale structure formation. We find that there are essentially three distinct schemes that can accommodate the oscillation data and which also allow for dark matter neutrinos. These include (i) three nearly degenerate (in mass) neutrinos, (ii) non-degenerate masses with $\nu_\tau$ in the eV range, and (iii) nearly degenerate $\nu_\mu-\nu_\tau$ pair (in the eV range), with the additional possibility that the electron neutrino is cosmologically significant. The last two schemes invoke a `sterile' neutrino which is light (< or ~ eV). We discuss the implications of these schemes for $\bar{\nu}_\mu - \bar{\nu}_e$ and $\nu_\mu - \nu_\tau$ oscillation, and find that scheme (ii) in particular, predicts them to be in the observable range. As far as structure formation is concerned, we compare the one neutrino flavor case with a variety of other possibilities, including two and three degenerate neutrino flavors. We show, both analytically and numerically, the effects of these neutrino mass scenarios on the amplitude of cosmological density fluctuations. With a Hubble constant of 50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, a spectral index of unity, and $\Omega_{baryon} = 0.05$, the two and three flavor scenarios fit the observational data marginally better than the single flavor scheme. We present a predictive scheme for fermion masses and mixings inspired by supersymmetric SO(10) in which the gauge hierarchy problem is resolved without fine tuning the parameters. There are six predictions in the flavor sector, all consistent with the present data. The scheme reproduces the familiar asymptotic relations $m_b=m_\tau$ and $m_dm_sm_b=m_e m_\mu m_\tau$. A new expression for $V_{cb}$ is obtained in terms of the quark masses. The remaining predictions involve the quark mixing angles $V_{us}$ and $V_{ub}$, as well as the parameter tan$\beta$ which turns out to be close to $m_t/m_b$., Comment: 16 pages, plain LaTeX, 2 figures available on request

We explore constraints on the spectral index $n$ of density fluctuations and the neutrino energy density fraction $\Omega_{HDM}$, employing data from a variety of large scale observations. The best fits occur for $n\approx 1$ and $\Omega_{HDM} \approx 0.15 - 0.30$, over a range of Hubble constants $40-60$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. We present a new class of inflationary models based on realistic supersymmetric grand unified theories which do not have the usual `fine tuning' problems. The amplitude of primordial density fluctuations, in particular, is found to be proportional to $(M_X /M_P)^2$, where $M_X (M_P)$ denote the GUT (Planck) scale, which is reminiscent of cosmic strings! Within a supersymmetric unified framework we explore the resolution of the gauge hierarchy problem taking account of the non-renormalizable terms in the superpotential. For $[SU(3)]^3$ supplemented by a discrete R parity, we find the remarkable property that the vacuum configuration corresponding to the correct gauge symmetry breaking remains flat (in the supersymmetric limit) to all orders in $M^{-1}_{Planck}$. The grand unification scale arises from an interplay of the Planck and supersymmetry breaking scales. An `internal' $Z_3\otimes Z_4$ symmetry protects a pair of electroweak doublets from becoming superheavy, yielding at the same time the supersymmetric `$\mu$ term' with the right order of magnitude. The $Z_4$ symmetry also acts as matter parity and eliminates the dangerous baryon number violating couplings., Comment: 16 pages LATEX

Within the framework of supersymmetric grand unification, estimates of the $b$ quark mass based on the asymptotic relation $m_b \simeq m_\tau$ single out the region with $\tan\beta$ close to unity, particularly if $m_t(m_t) \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} 170\ GeV$. We explore the radiative breaking of the electroweak symmetry and the associated sparticle and higgs spectroscopy in models with $1 < \tan\beta \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} 1.6$. The lightest scalar higgs is expected to have a mass below $100\ GeV$, while the remaining four higgs masses exceed $300\ GeV$. We explore the gauge hierarchy problem within the framework of supersymmetric $SU(3)_c \times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ with a minimal set of higgs supermultiplets. Imposition of a suitable discrete (alternatively $R$) symmetry `prevents' the electroweak higgs doublets from becoming superheavy through renormalizable couplings. A full resolution of the problem requires consideration of the non-renormalizable couplings which play an essential role. We estimate the top quark, lightest sparticle (LSP) and scalar higgs masses within a supersymmetric grand unified framework in which $\tan\beta \simeq m_t/m_b$ and the electroweak symmetry is radiatively broken. The requirement that the calculated $b$ quark mass lie close to its measured value, together with the cosmological constraint $\Omega_{LSP} \approx 1$, fixes the top quark mass to be $m_t(m_t) \approx 170 \pm 15\ GeV$. The LSP (of bino purity $\stackrel{_>}{_\sim} 98\%)$ has mass $\sim 200 - 350\ GeV$. In the scalar higgs sector the CP-odd scalar mass $m_A \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} 220\ GeV$. With $m_A \stackrel{_>}{_\sim} M_Z$, as suggested by the decay $b \rightarrow s\gamma$, we find $M_Z \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} m_{h^0} (m_{H^0}) \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} 140 (220)\ GeV$ and $120\ GeV \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} m_{H^\pm} \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} 240\ GeV$., Comment: 14 pages in plain LaTeX, BA-93-25, PRL-TH-93/6

We explore constraints on inflationary models employing data on large scale structure mainly from COBE temperature anisotropies and IRAS selected galaxy surveys, taking care not to apply linear perturbation theory to data in the non-linear regime. In models where the tensor contribution to the COBE signal is negligible, we find the spectral index of density fluctuations $n$ must exceed 0.7. Furthermore the COBE signal cannot be dominated by the tensor component, implying $n>0.85$ in such models. The data favors cold plus hot dark matter models with $n$ close to unity and $\Omega_{HDM} \sim 0.20 - 0.35$. We present a supersymmetric grand unification scheme based on the gauge group SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X SU(3)_R in which the proton and the lightest supersymmetric particle are stable, neutrinos are necessarily massive, and the observed baryon asymmetry originates in the lepton sector. We propose a new realization of the chaotic inflationary scenario in which the scalar field responsible for inflation also spontaneously breaks the underlying gauge symmetry at a superheavy scale $\sim 10^{15} - 10^{17}\; GeV$. A possible framework is provided by the superstring inspired gauge models, in which case several predictions are essentially model independent. The spectral index for the scalar perturbations $n \simeq 0.92 - 0.88$, while the ratio of the tensor to the scalar quadrupole anisotropy is $(\Delta T/T)^2_T/(\Delta T/T)^2_S \approx 0.4 - 0.7$. On smaller angular scales, $\delta T/T (1^\circ ) \approx (9 - 16) \times 10^{-6}$ and $\delta T/T (2.1^\circ ) \approx (6 - 10) \times 10^{-6}$. It was recently shown by the authors that the Fritzsch ansatz for the quark mass matrices prescribed at the supersymmetric grand unified scale is compatible with a moderately heavy top quark ($m_t \simeq 120-150~GeV$). Here we extend the ansatz to incorporate the charged leptons and the neutrinos. It is found that the $\nu_e-\nu_\mu$ mixing angle is small and consistent with the MSW solution of the solar neutrino puzzle. Furthermore, the model predicts observable $\nu_\mu-\nu_\tau$ oscillations with sin$^22\theta_{\mu \tau} \simeq 0.1$ and $\nu_\tau$ mass in the $(1-3)~eV$ range., Comment: 15 pages in LaTeX, one figure avialable on request, BA-93-09

It is shown, contrary to common belief, that the Fritzsch ansatz for the quark mass matrices admits a heavy top quark. With the ansatz prescribed at the supersymmetric grand unified (GUT) scale, one finds that the top quark may be as heavy as 145 GeV, provided that tan$\beta$ (the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two higgs doublets) $\gg 1$. Within a non-supersymmetric GUT framework with two (one) light higgs doublets, the corresponding approximate upper bound on the top mass is $120~ (90)$ GeV. We present an ansatz for the quark and lepton mass matrices, derivable from SO(10) type GUTs, which accommodates a heavy $(> 92 GeV)$ top quark and permits large mixings in the $\nu_\mu \leftrightarrow \nu_\tau$ sector (as suggested by the recent Kamiokande and IMB data on the atmospheric neutrinos). The well known asymptotic relations $m_b = m_\tau$, $m_s = \frac{1}{3} m_\mu$ and $m_dm_s = m_e m_\mu$ all hold to a good approximation. Depending on $\nu_\mu \leftrightarrow \nu_\tau$ mixing which can even be maximal, the mixing angle relevant for solar neutrino oscillation lies in the range $7.8 \times 10^{-3} \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} \sin^2 2\theta_{e\mu} \stackrel{_<}{_\sim} 2.1 \times 10^{-2}$. For the $^{71}$Ga experiment the event rate, normalized against the standard solar model prediction of 132 SNU, is estimated to be between 80 and 20 SNU., Comment: 16 pages, in LaTeX

The simplest realizations of the new inflationary scenario typically give rise to primordial density fluctuations which deviate logarithmically from the scale free Harrison - Zeldovich spectrum. We consider a number of such examples and, in each case we normalize the amplitude of the fluctuations with the recent COBE measurement of the microwave background anisotropy. The predictions for the bulk velocities as well as anisotropies on smaller (~1-2 degrees) angular scales are compared with the Harrison-Zeldovich case. Deviations from the latter range from a few to about 15 percent. We also estimate the redshift beyond which the quasars would not be expected to be seen. The inflationary quasar cutoff redshifts can vary by as much as 25\% from the Harrison-Zeldovich case.
