Ceftazidime pentahydrate (CP) and cefotaxime sodium (CS) are semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotics and are used to treat a variety of diseases worldwide. In order to explore the efficiency of a medicinal compound, it is important to have a deep understanding of its solution and physiochemical behaviour along with its interaction with biological molecules. In this regard, the solution of two drugs i.e., ceftazidime pentahydrate (CP) and cefotaxime sodium (CS) were investigated in detail. The physicochemical properties of drugs solutions and their interaction with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) were studied in water under varying experimental parameters. In the present study the physicochemical properties such as density, viscosity, surface tension, and conductance of aqueous solution, having various molar concentrations, of CP and CS were traced out at different temperatures. Five various concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3 mol dm−3) of each drug in an aqueous medium were prepared separately, and the physicochemical properties of each solution, were studied individually at temperatures such as 293, 303, 313, 323, and 333 K respectively. Most of these parameters have shown different behaviour with varying concentration of solution and temperature of the medium. In addition, these drugs showed a spontaneous surface-active and association behaviour in aqueous solutions and drug DNA solution. The flow behaviour, surface properties, volumetric behaviour and solute–solvent interaction of this drug were prominently influenced by experimental variables. UV-Visible spectroscopy was also used to study the interaction of these drugs with DNA in aqueous media in detail. Calculated values of binding constants (Kb) for all drug–DNA are positive, indicating constructive binding and interactions between the molecules. In addition the binding efficiency of ceftazidime pentahydrate was found more than that of cefotaxime sodium. The interaction of drug–DNA was not only affected by the nature of the drug but also by the drug-to-DNA ratio and nature of the medium used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two types of composite imprinted membranes, i.e., composite membrane comprised of D-Phe imprinted beads and D-Phe imprinted membrane or DCM and composite membrane comprised of L-Phe imprinted beads and L-Phe imprinted membranes or LCM, were synthesized by phase inversion technique after a uniform dispersion of beads within the polymeric solutions using simple physico-mechanical process. The assemblies of the prepared DCM, LCM and control membranes were employed in ultrafiltration for chiral separation of D, L-Phenylalanine racemate solution. DCM and LCM showed an improved adsorption capacity (0.334 mg g-1 and 0.365 mg g-1 respectively), and adsorption selectivity (2.72 and 2.98 respectively). However, the percent rejection of the template and counter enantiomer were lower than that of control membranes. Compared to control membrane, the DCM and LCM showed inverse permselectivity. These composite membranes having better adsorption and separation ability for Phenylalanine racemate solution will be suitable in the future for various other applications.

Water constitutes ≈70–90% of the organism's body by mass and is highly important for its survival. Water contains a variety of chemical contaminants introduced by various sectors, resulting in contamination that has a direct impact on the ecosystem. Various approaches are in practice to tackle these issues. Among these, semiconductor photocatalysis appears to be the cutting‐edge technology for the degradation of wastewater contaminants. Herein, the fabrication of Fe3O4−SiO2 nanocomposite via facile co‐precipitation and Stober methods are reported. Various characterization techniques are employed for the structural elucidation, morphology, crystallinity, and stability of the as‐prepared composite. The nanocomposite is employed in catalytic and photocatalytic applications toward the removal of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes from a comparative perspective. It is observed that the composite can remove about 93% of MB and 51% of MO within 7 and 6 h, respectively. These findings indicate that the nanocomposite has a higher MB removal effectiveness than the MO. This trend can be accredited to the difference in the chemical structure of both dyes. The nanocomposite is also evaluated for antioxidant and antileishmanial activity, and it is shown to be quite effective even at very low concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrate as an important water pollutant, causing eutrophication was analyzed in Pakistan at different water sources (hand pump (HP), bore hole (BH) and tube well (TW)) to assess the contamination level caused by NO3−. NO3− concentrations in the HP water samples were 31 mg L−1 to 59 mg L−1, in BH 20 mg L−1 to 79 mg L−1 while in TW water samples it was between 29 to 55 mg L−1. The association of NO3− with other selected parameter in groundwater can be determined by using statistical approaches. Different physicochemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO)) were studied in groundwater samples of the research district. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) for groundwater characteristics were calculated. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) was used to categorize samples based on their groundwater quality similarities and to find links between groundwater quality factors. The key relationship of the groundwater for HP samples on EC and TDS (r = 1) had a great correlation, while all other parameters correlations were lower (r = 0.40), BH's parameters on WT and WSD (r = 0.57), WT and pH (r = 0.57), EC and DO (r = 0.50), DO and TDS (0.50), EC and TDS (r = 1) had a quite high correlation, while all other parameters correlations were less than (r = 0.40), on the other hand, tube well parameters on TDS and EC (r = 1) had a perfect correlation, DO and pH (r = 0.75) parameters correlations were less than (r = 0.40). Advanced methodologies were applied for the detection of some elements at trace levels in edible oils. Trace elements play a role in oil stability, quality of edible oils and fats. In the present study, problems were addressed related to simple, cheap, less time consuming and suitable pretreatment advanced methods for suitable sample introduction and calibrations as well as the strategies and techniques are discussed. The present review is aimed to discuss the significance of simplifying sample treatments are offered for trace elements in oils. The period covered by this review is last twenty years. However, the various applications of advanced methodologies including extraction and microextraction. Magnetic core–shell polymer nanocomposites (MCS-PNCs) have gained great research attraction in various emerging fields. MCS-PNCs are considered as one of the potential smart choices for targeted and controlled drug delivery systems. In the present study, MCS-PNCs composed of silica-coated iron oxide (Fe3O4@SiO2) magnetic core and poly(methacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) p(MAAm-co-AA) shell were prepared. Initially, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via a modified co-precipitation technique and then coated with silica through Stober Method. Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were then coated with polymeric shell p(MAAm-co-AA) by microwave-assisted precipitation polymerization method using methacrylamide (MAAm) and acrylic acid (AA) as functional monomers, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinker, and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. The synthesized MCS-PNCs were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The as-prepared composites were then observed as adsorbents for an anticancer drug letrozole (LZ) loading. The optimum conditions for maximum adsorption of LZ (95.97%) were achieved by varying the experimental conditions. The obtained MCS-PNCs were super-paramagnetic and were easily collected with an external magnet after using in adsorption experiment. We believe that the current findings can receive substantial interest and potential applications in biomedical fields, especially in controlled and targeted drug delivery systems. The abatement of toxic pollutants and drug‐resistant pathogens from water is one of the major environmental issues. In this work, we are reporting the preparation, detailed characterization and photocatalytic degradation, and biological activities of bimetallic oxides (CuO‐SiO2) nanocomposite. For this purpose, CuO, SiO2 nanoparticles, and CuO‐SiO2 nanocomposites were successfully synthesized through sol–gel process. The nanoparticles and nanocomposite were prepared by taking the Cu(NO3)2.3H2O as copper oxide precursor and TEOS as silica precursor using absolute ethanol and water as solvents The molar ratio of TEOS: Glycerol: H2O used was 1.5:1:6.6 respectively. The synthesized nanoparticles and nanocomposites were characterized by using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). The nanocomposites and individual nanoparticles were then applied as catalysts for their activities toward catalytic/photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet (CV) dye in an aqueous medium. The degradation progress was monitored by UV–Visible spectroscopic analysis. It was found that CuO‐SiO2 nanocomposite shows good photocatalytic activities toward the removal of crystal violet dye as compared to the catalytic activities of its individual constitutes.
