Abstract

The structural and magnetic properties of Pr-alloyed MnBi (short MnBi-Pr) nanostructures with a range of Pr concentrations have been investigated. The nanostructures include thin films having Pr concentrations 0, 2, 3, 5 and 9 atomic percent and melt-spun ribbons having Pr concentrations 0, 2, 4 and 6 percent respectively. Addition of Pr into the MnBi lattice has produced a significant change in the magnetic properties of these nanostructures including an increase in coercivity and structural phase transition temperature, and a decrease in saturation magnetization and anisotropy energy. The highest value of coercivity measured in the films is 23 kOe and in the ribbons is 5.6 kOe. The observed magnetic properties are explained as the consequences of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract

Magnetic properties of Fe nanoparticles with different sizes synthesized by a physical deposition technique have been investigated experimentally. We have used a high pressure sputtering technique to deposit iron nanoparticles on a silicon substrate. The nanoparticles are then analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and superconducting quantum interference device techniques. TEM and AFM data show that the particle size could be tuned by adjusting the deposition conditions. The magnetic properties have been investigated from temperature dependent magnetization M(T) and field dependent magnetization M(H) measurements. The results show that two phases including both ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic particles are present in our system. From these data we extracted the superparamagnetic critical size to be 9 nm for our samples. Ferromagnetic particles are single magnetic domain particles and the magnetic properties can be explained by the Stoner and Wohlfarth model. For the superparamagnetic phase, the effective anisotropy constant, Keff, decreases as the particle size increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The structural, magnetic, and electron-transport properties of Mn3-xPtxSn (x=0, 0.5, 1) nanomaterials prepared by arc-melting, melt-spinning, and annealing were investigated. It was found that the hexagonal structure is the most stable structure for Mn3Sn and the samples show an antiferromagnetic spin order at room temperature. The Pt-containing samples are mainly tetragonal but contain a small amount of other impurity phases, including hexagonal Mn3Sn and Mn2Sn. At room temperature, the Pt-containing samples show ferri- or ferromagnetic spin order with a Curie temperature of about 370 K. The measured high-field magnetization and anisotropy constant for Mn2PtSn are 405 emu/cm3 and 2.6 Mergs/cm3, respectively. The samples are all highly conducting with metallic electron transport and show a substantial negative magnetoresistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Alloys of composition [([Sm.sub.x][Pr.sub.1-x]).sub.3][Fe.sub.27.5][Ti.sub.1.5](x = 0-1) and [Pr.sub.3][([Fe.sub.1-y][Co.sub.y]).sub.27.5][Ti.sub.1.5](y = 0-0.4) were synthesized and characterized in the temperature range of 10-1273 K in fields up to 5 T. The magnetization curves along the hard direction clearly indicate the presence of a Type II FOMP (first order magnetization processes) below 200 K. The critical fields [H.sub.cr] at which FOMP is observed, have been determined from the occurrence of a maximum in dM/dH as a function of H. For [([Sm.sub.x][Pr.sub.1-x]).sub.3][Fe.sub.27.5][Ti.sub.1.5] compounds, [H.sub.cr] is the largest (4.4 T at 5-10 K) for the x = 0 composition, and the lowest (1.4 T at 5-10 K) for the x = 0.5 composition. For the [Pr.sub.3][([Fe.sub.1-y][Co.sub.y]).sub.27.5][Ti.sub.1.5] compounds, the [H.sub.cr] are about 3.6 T at 5-10 K for y = 0 and 0.1 whereas, [H.sub.cr] is seen to decrease monotonically for higher Co contents. The FOMP exhibits a strong monotonically decreasing temperature dependence for both systems. The effects of the R sublattice (Sm and Pr) and the 3d sublattice (Fe and Co) on the anisotropy and FOMP are reported. Index Terms--Alloys, anisotropy, FOMP, Sm-Pr-Fe-Co-Ti.

Abstract

Neutron diffraction (ND) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements were carried out to determine the long-range and short-range structural properties of Co-substituted [Pr.sub.3] [Fe.sub.1-x] [Co.sub.x] [Ti.sub.1.5] compounds. ND refinement analysis indicates Ti atoms occupy the 4g and 4i Fe sites and Co atoms occupy, without preference, those Fe sites not shared with the Ti atoms. EXAFS measurements show the local environment of the Pr experiences increasing static disorder with the introduction of Co, and its coordination sphere contracts in the vicinity of those Co near neighbors. The Fe local environment remains unaffected with the introduction of Co suggesting that substitution in excess of 40% can be achieved in this structure. 17. Elastic torsion effects in magnetic nanoparticle diblock-copolymer structures

Abstract

Magnetic properties of thin composite films, consisting of non-interacting polystyrene-coated γ-Fe₂O₃ (maghemite) nanoparticles embedded into polystyrene-block-polyisoprene P(S-b-I) diblock-copolymer films are investigated. Different particle concentrations, ranging from 0.7 to 43 wt%, have been used. The magnetization measured as a function of external field and temperature shows typical features of anisotropic superparamagnets including a hysteresis at low temperatures and blocking phenomena. However, the data cannot be reconciled with the unmodified Stoner–Wohlfarth–Néel theory. Applying an appropriate generalization we find evidence for either an elastic torque being exerted on the nanoparticles by the field or a broad distribution of anisotropy constants.

Abstract

In this retrospective study, we describe the anesthetic management and its implications in parturients with chronic kidney disease (CKD; n = 9), who underwent elective caesarean delivery. Nine parturients with CKD of various etiologies, who underwent elective Caesarean delivery, were included in this study. Spinal anest-hesia was administered in all parturients with normal coagulation profile through a 25-gauze spinal needle (Quincke) with 0.5% (H) bupivacaine in L2-3 space and T6 level was achieved. Hemodynamics and side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, and backache were record. The mean age was 28.22 ± 4.43 years. The mean levels of serum creatinine and serum potassium were 2.78 ± 1.29 mg/dl and 4.11 ± 0.46 meq/l, respectively. Mean baseline values of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate were higher which decreased after spinal anesthesia. However, the incidence of hypotension, which required mephentermine treatment, was 11.1%. One patient had symptoms of nausea and vomiting/dizziness at the time of hypotension, which disappeared after treatment with 5 mg of intravenous mephentermine. Baseline value of PR remained high throughout the operation. Parturients with CKD with normal coagulation profile remained hemodynamically stable under spinal anesthesia with minimal side effects. Abstract

Renal transplantation (RTx) has now become an accepted therapeutic modality of choice for elderly ESRD patients. This single-center study was undertaken to evaluate the outcome of RTx in ESRD patients. ≥5 years. A total of 103 patients underwent RTx 79 living related living donors [LD], 24 deceased donors [DD]) at our center. Post-transplant immunosuppression consisted of calcineurin inhibitor-based regimen. The mean donor age was 58.3 years in the LD group and 59.5 years in the DD group. Male recipients constituted 92% in LD and 75% in DD group. In living donor renal transplantation, 1- and 5-year patient survival was 93% and 83.3% respectively and death-censored graft survival was 97.3% and 92.5% respectively. There were 12.6% biopsy proven acute rejection (BPAR) episodes and 12.6% patients were lost, mainly due to infections. In deceased donor renal transplantation, 1- and 5-year patient survival was 79.1% and 74.5% respectively and death-censored graft survival was 95.8% and 85.1% respectively. There were 12.5% BPAR episodes and 25% of patients were lost, mainly due to infections. RTx in ESRD (≥55 years) patients has acceptable patient and graft survival if found to have cardiac fitness and therefore should be encouraged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Deceased donors (DDs) with the brain death due to head injury are the major source of organs for transplantation. The incidence of post-head injury disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) ranges from 24% to 50%. Many centers do not accept organs from donors with DIC due to increased risk of primary graft non-function and/or high chances of morbidity/mortality. We performed two successful renal transplants from a DD with head injury with DIC and deranged renal function. One of the recipients developed transient thrombocytopenia, but there was no evidence of DIC or delayed graft functions in either of the recipients. Over a follow-up of 1 month, both are doing well with stable graft function and hematological profile. Thus, a carefully selected DD with severe DIC even with deranged renal function is not a contraindication for organ donation if other risk factors for primary non-function are excluded.
