In therapeutic focused ultrasound (FUS), such as thermal ablation and hyperthermia, effective acousto-thermal manipulation requires precise targeting of complex geometries, sound wave propagation through irregular structures and selective focusing at specific depths. Acoustic holographic lenses (AHLs) provide a distinctive capability to shape acoustic fields into precise, complex and multifocal FUS-thermal patterns. Acknowledging the under-explored potential of AHLs in shaping ultrasound-induced heating, this study introduces a roadmap for acousto-thermal modeling in the design of AHLs. Three primary modeling approaches are studied and contrasted using four distinct shape groups for the imposed target field. They include pressure-based (BSC-TR and ITER-TR), temperature-based (IHTO-TR), and machine learning (ML)-based (GaN and Feat-GAN) methods. New metrics including image quality, thermal efficiency, control, and computational time are introduced. The importance of evaluating target pattern complexity, thermal and pressure requirements, and computational resources is highlighted for selecting the appropriate methods. For lightly heterogeneous media and targets with lower pattern complexity, BSC-TR combined with error diffusion algorithms provides an effective solution. As pattern complexity increases, ITER-TR becomes more suitable, enabling optimization through iterative forward and backward propagations controlled by different error metrics. IHTO-TR is recommended for highly heterogeneous media, particularly in applications requiring thermal control and precise heat deposition. GaN is ideal for rapid solutions that account for acousto-thermal effects, especially when model parameters and boundary conditions remain constant. Acoustic holographic lenses (AHLs) show great potential for sound manipulation. These lenses store the phase and amplitude profile of the desired wavefront when illuminated by a single acoustic source to reconstruct focused ultrasound (FUS) pressure fields, induce localized heating, and achieve temporal and spatial thermal effects in acousto-thermal materials like polymers. The ultrasonic energy is transmitted and focused by AHL from a transducer into a particular focal volume. It is then converted to heat by internal friction in the polymer chains, causing the temperature of the polymer to rise at the focus locations while having little to no effect elsewhere. This one-of-a-kind capability is made possible by the development of AHLs to make use of the translation of attenuated pressure fields into programmable heat patterns. However, the acousto-thermal dynamics of AHLs are largely unexplored. We use a machine learning-assisted single inverse problem approach for rapid and efficient AHL designs. The process involves the conversion of thermal information into a holographic representation through the utilization of two latent functions; pressure phase and amplitude. Experimental verification is performed for pressure and thermal measurements. The volumetric acousto-thermal analysis of experimental samples is performed to offer knowledge of the obtained pattern dynamics, as well as the applicability of holographic FUS thermal mapping for precise temperature control in complex volumes of heterogeneous media. Acoustic holographic lenses, also known as acoustic holograms, can change the phase of a transmitted wavefront in order to shape and construct complex ultrasound pressure fields, often for focusing the acoustic energy on a target region. These lenses have been proposed for transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) to create diffraction-limited focal zones that target specific brain regions while compensating for skull aberration. Holograms for tFUS are currently designed using time-reversal approaches in full-wave time-domain numerical simulations. However, such simulations need time-consuming computations, which severely limits the adoption of iterative optimization strategies. Furthermore, in the time-reversal method, the number and distribution of virtual sources can significantly influence the final sound field. Because of the computational constraints, predicting these effects and determining the optimal arrangement is challenging. This study introduces an efficient method for designing acoustic holograms using a volumetric holographic technique to generate focused fields inside the skull. The proposed method combines a modified mixed-domain method for ultrasonic propagation with a gradient descent iterative optimization algorithm. This approach enables substantially faster holographic computation than previously reported techniques. The iterative process uses explicitly defined loss functions to bias the ultrasound field's optimization parameters to specific desired characteristics, such as axial resolution, transversal resolution, coverage, and focal region uniformity, while eliminating the uncertainty associated with virtual sources in time-reversal techniques. Numerical studies are conducted on four brain structures: the anterior insula, hippocampus, caudate nucleus, and amygdala. The findings are further validated in underwater experiments with a 3D-printed skull phantom.

Experimental and numerical investigations are performed to provide an assessment of the transport behavior of an ultrasonic oscillatory two-phase flow in a microchannel. The work is inspired by the flow observed in an innovative ultrasonic fabric drying device using a piezoelectric bimorph transducer with microchannels, where a water-air two-phase flow is transported by harmonically oscillating microchannels. The flow exhibits highly unsteady behavior as the water and air interact with each other during the vibration cycles, making it significantly different from the well-studied steady flow in microchannels. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is realized by combing the turbulence Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) k-${\omega}$ model with the phase-field method to resolve the dynamics of the two-phase flow. The numerical results are qualitatively validated by the experiment. Through parametric studies, we specifically examined the effects of vibration conditions (i.e., frequency and amplitude), microchannel taper angle, and wall surface contact angle (i.e., wettability) on the flow rate through the microchannel. Losses associated with nonlinear wave propagation and exhibited by acoustic wave distortion and shock formation compromise the efficiency of contactless acoustic energy transfer systems. As such, predicting the shock formation distance and its dependence on the amplitude of the excitation is essential for their efficiency, design and operation. We present an analytical approach capable of predicting the shock formation distance of acoustic waves generated by a baffled disk with arbitrary deformation in a weakly viscous fluid medium. The loss-less Westervelt equation, used to model the nonlinear wave propagation, is asymptotically expanded based on the amplitude of the excitation. Because the solutions of the first- and second-order equations decay at different rates, we implement the method of renormalization and introduce a coordinate transformation to identify and eliminate the secular terms. The approach yields two partial differential equations that can be solved to predict the formation distance either analytically or numerically much faster than time-domain numerical simulations. In the context of wireless acoustic power transfer, high intensity focused ultrasound technology aims at the reduction of spreading losses by concentrating the acoustic energy at a specific location. Experiments are performed to determine the impact of nonlinear wave propagation on the spatially resonant conditions in a focused ultrasonic power transfer system. An in-depth analysis is performed to explain the experimental observations. The results show that the efficiency of the energy transfer is reduced as nonlinear effects become more prominent. Furthermore, the position of the maximum voltage output position shifts away from the focal point and closer to the transducer as the source strength is increased. Contactless ultrasound power transfer (UPT) has emerged as one of the promising techniques for wireless power transfer. Physical processes supporting UPT include the vibrations at a transmitting/acoustic source element, acoustic wave propagation, piezoelectric transduction of elastic vibrations at a receiving element, and acoustic-structure interactions at the surfaces of the transmitting and receiving elements. A novel mechanism using a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) transmitter is proposed for enhanced power transfer in UPT systems. The HIFU source is used for actuating a finite-size piezoelectric disk receiver. The underlying physics of the proposed system includes the coupling of the nonlinear acoustic field with structural responses of the receiver, which leads to spatial resonances and the appearance of higher harmonics during wave propagation in a medium. Acoustic nonlinearity due to wave kinematics in the HIFU-UPT system is modeled by taking into account the effects of diffraction, absorption, and nonlinearity in the medium. Experimentally-validated acoustic-structure interaction formulation is employed in a finite element based multiphysics model.
