Propolis, as a by-product of honey production, has shown several beneficial effects on cardiovascular risks in past randomised controlled trials, although the findings are not conclusive. In this review, we intend to evaluate the effects of propolis consumption on cardiovascular risk factors by conducting a meta-analysis. The Web of Science, Medline and Scopus databases were comprehensively searched until September 2023. Eligible studies were identified by screening, and their data were extracted. Weighted mean differences with a 95 % CI for each outcome were estimated using the random-effects model. This meta-analysis revealed that propolis consumption led to a significant decrease in the levels of TAG (weighted mean differences (WMD): -10·44 mg/dl 95 % CI: -16·58, -4·31; P = 0·001), LDL-cholesterol (WMD: -9·31 mg/dl; 95 % CI: -13·50, -5·12 mg; P < 0·001), fasting blood glucose (WMD: -7·30 mg/dl; 95 % CI: -11·58, -3·02; P = 0·001), HbA1c (WMD: -0·32 %; 95 % CI: -0·60, -0·05; P = 0·01), insulin (WMD: -1·36 μU/ml; 95 % CI: -2·36, -0·36; P = 0·007), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (WMD: -0·39; 95 % CI: -0·74, -0·03; P = 0·020) and systolic blood pressure (WMD: -2·24 mmHg 95 % CI: -4·08, -0·39; P = 0·010), compared with the control groups. Furthermore, propolis consumption had a significant increasing effect on HDL-cholesterol levels (WMD: 2·03 mg/dl; 95 % CI: 0·24, 3·83; P = 0·020). In contrast, the consumption of propolis had no significant effect on total cholesterol and diastolic blood pressure levels. This systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis suggested that propolis intake may be effective in cardiometabolic improvement in adults. Further, well-designed studies are required to confirm and elucidate all aspects of these findings.

Saffron is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus L. flowers. The yellow-orange color of saffron comes from crocin, a water-soluble carotenoid that can be ingested. Crocin is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. It is believed to affect inflammation and oxidative stress, making it a promising therapeutic option. However, research on its impact is inconclusive. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the benefits of crocin supplementation and its specific effects on inflammation and oxidative stress markers. A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted up to February 2024 in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science to find suitable randomized clinical trials (RCTs). All participants were adults who were supplemented with crocin as part of the study intervention. The selected trials were subjected to heterogeneity tests using the I 2 statistic. Random effects models were examined based on the heterogeneity tests, and the pooled data were calculated as weighted mean differences (WMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Of the 519 papers that remain after duplications were removed, 13 eligible RCTs were included in the present meta-analysis. Our findings indicated that crocin supplementation significantly reduced c-reactive protein (CRP) levels (SMD: -0.50; 95%CI: -0.86 to -0.13; p = 0.008), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) (SMD: -1.96; 95%CI: -2.72 to -1.19; p < 0.001), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) (SMD: -3.52; 95%CI: -6.84 to -0.20; p = 0.03). Also, crocin supplementation led to a significant increase in total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (SMD: 1.48; 95%CI: 0.52 to 2.43; p = 0.002). Overall effect size showed that crocin intake failed to change the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels significantly. Crocin reduces inflammatory markers and increases TAC. The effect of crocin on inflammatory markers was greater in a dose ≥ 30 mg/day and an intervention duration ≥ 12 weeks. Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis examine the effects of okra consumption on cardiometabolic risk factors in individuals with prediabetes and diabetes. Okra is a widely consumed vegetable with potential health benefits, and understanding its impact on metabolic parameters in these populations is important., Methods: A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted up to May 2024 in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science to find relevant randomized clinical trials (RCTs) by using following keyword: ("okra" OR "okras" OR " abelmoschus esculentus ") AND ("intervention" OR "controlled trial" OR "randomized" OR "randomized" OR "randomly" OR "clinical trial" OR "trial" OR "randomized controlled trial" OR "randomized clinical trial" OR "RCT" OR "blinded" OR "placebo" OR "Cross-Over" OR "parallel"). The selected trials were subjected to heterogeneity tests using the I 2 statistic. Random effects models were examined based on the heterogeneity tests, and the pooled data were calculated as weighted mean differences (WMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). In this meta-analysis, all the analyses were performed by using the STATA version 17 software., Results: Of the 1,339 papers, nine eligible RCTs were included in the present meta-analysis. Our findings indicated that okra consumption significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC) levels (WMD: -14.40 mg/dL; (95% CI: -20.94 to -7.86); p  < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (WMD: -7.90 mg/dL; (95% CI: -13.30 to -2.48); p  = 0.004), fasting blood glucose (FBG) (WMD: -39.58 mg/dL; (95% CI: -61.60 to -17.56); p  < 0.001), and hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) (WMD: -0.46 mg/dL; (95% CI: -0.79 to -0.13); p  = 0.005). Overall effect size showed that okra intake failed to change triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), Insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body weight, and body Mass Index (BMI) significantly., Conclusion: Okra decreased TC, LDL, FBG, and HbA1c levels in the intervention compared to the control group. A dose ≤3,000 mg/day caused a significant decrease in TG, TC, LDL, HbA1c, and a significant increase in HDL. Background: In recent years, the therapeutic effects of raspberry have been the subject of several randomized control trials (RCTs). However, there is no consensus about the effect of raspberry consumption on anthropometric indices and liver function tests. So, the present review aims to investigate this effectiveness by conducting a meta-analysis., Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched to identify eligible randomized control trials (RCTs) up to March 2024. The overall effect sizes were estimated using the random-effects model as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: Nine studies (10 arms) with 355 participants were eligible for inclusion in this review. This meta-analysis showed that raspberry consumption did not lead to significant changes in anthropometric indices (weight, body mass index, and waist circumference) and liver function tests (aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase)., Conclusion: This review revealed that raspberry consumption had no significant impact on anthropometric indices or liver function tests. However, more RCTs with a larger sample size and higher sensitivity are needed to draw definite conclusions. Background: Owing to the rich phytochemical content of Silymarin, it may effectively manage inflammation and oxidative stress. We, therefore, aimed to examine the existing evidence on the effect of Silymarin consumption on inflammation and oxidative stress factors by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials., Methods: A systematic literature search up to September 2023 was completed in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science, to identify eligible RCTs. Heterogeneity tests of the selected trials were performed using the I 2 statistic. Random effects models were assessed based on the heterogeneity tests, and pooled data were determined as weighted mean differences with a 95% confidence interval., Results: Fifteen RCTs were included in this meta-analysis. Our findings showed that Silymarin consumption significantly decreased CRP (WMD, - 0.50 mg/L; 95% CI, (- 0.95 to - 0.04); p = 0.03), MDA (WMD, - 1.19 nmol/mL; 95% CI, (- 1.99 to - 0.38); p = 0.004), and IL-6 (WMD, - 0.44 pg/ml; 95% CI, (- 0.75 to - 0.12); p = 0.006). Silymarin consumption had no significant effects on IL-10, TAC, and GSH. A significant non-linear relationship was observed between the duration of the intervention and MDA changes., Conclusions: Silymarin can help reduce inflammation in patients with diabetes and thalassemia by reducing MDA as an oxidative stress marker and CRP and IL-6 as inflammatory markers., (© 2024. Background: Previous studies investigating the effect of oral supplementation of paricalcitol on reactive protein levels in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients reported inconsistent findings. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we have analyzed and interpreted the results obtained from previous randomized clinical trials on the effect of paricalcitol on C-reactive protein in CKD patients in the literature., Methods: MEDLINE, SciVerse Scopus, and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science databases were searched until January 2023 and related articles were obtained through a careful screening process allowing extraction of required data from selected articles. The effect size was calculated using a random effect model and weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Heterogeneity among studies was evaluated using Cochran's Q test and I 2 ., Results: Amongst the 182 articles obtained from the initial search, 4 studies (6 arms) were finally included in the meta-analysis. Pooled analysis shows that C-reactive protein levels significantly decrease after oral supplementation with paricalcitol (WMD: -2.55 mg/L, 95% CI (-4.99 to -0.11; P = 0.04). The studies used in this meta-analysis showed significant heterogeneity (I 2  = 66.3% and P = 0.01)., Conclusion: Oral paricalcitol supplementation in CKD patients can significantly reduce C-reactive protein levels, which may prevent CKD progression., (© 2024. Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the overall impact of Panax ginseng on lipid profile by synthesizing existing evidence. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among the elderly population, and serum lipids play a crucial role in its development. Maintaining optimal levels of triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total cholesterol is essential in reducing the risk of CVD. Ginsenosides, the active constituents in ginseng, have shown positive effects on lipid metabolism. This review aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential benefits of ginseng in managing dyslipidemia, which could have significant implications for the prevention and treatment of CVD., Methods: A comprehensive analysis of 29 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) was conducted to assess the effects of ginseng supplementation on lipid profile, including Triglyceride (TG), Total Cholesterol (TC), High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C), and Low-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. A systematic search was done in online databases, such as MEDLINE, Scopus, and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, using relevant keywords and MeSH terms to identify relevant studies until January 2024., Results: The Weighted Mean Differences (WMD) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) for TG, TC, LDL-C, and HDL-C did not show significant changes with ginseng supplementation., Conclusion: Taking into account the results, using ginseng did not have a statistically significant influence on lipid profile parameters in individuals with different health conditions. Background: Quercetin is a bioactive flavonoid, but the effect of it on cardiometabolic factors has remained uncertain and previous findings from meta-analyses have been controversial., Objective: To provide an overview of the effects of Quercetin on cardiometabolic factors based on meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs)., Method: MEDLINE, SciVerse Scopus, and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science databases were searched to identify eligible publications. As part of the umbrella review, we summarized pooled estimates, 95% CIs, heterogeneity, and publication bias. A GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach was used to rate the certainty of evidence., Results: Five meta-analyses including 18 eligible RCTs plus 5 RCTs that were not included in previous meta-analyses were found. The results indicated Quercetin does not affect diastolic blood pressure (DBP), lipid profile, inflammation, anthropometric indices, fasting plasma glucose (FBG), and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). However, Quercetin supplementation could significantly reduce systolic blood pressure (SBP) (weighted mean difference (WMD): -1.9, 95% CI = -3.2 to -0.6, I 2  = 88.3%) and insulin level (WMD: -1.07, 95% CI = -1.9 to -0.1, I 2  = 75.0%). The certainty of evidence ranged from very low to moderate., Conclusion: Quercetin supplementation has reducing effects on SBP and insulin levels but not other cardiometabolic parameters. Objective: Cinnamon is extracted from the inner bark of Cinnamomum trees. Recent studies have indicated that cinnamon is a safe and cost-effective treatment for improving body weight, lipid profiles, insulin resistance, and blood pressure. This systematic review aimed to summarize the effect of cinnamon supplementation on adipokines and appetite-regulating hormones ., Materials and Methods: This comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to March 2022 without any limitation. The quality of eligible studies was evaluated through the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing the risk of bias ., Results: This systematic review included six clinical trial studies (363 participants), among which, only one study was performed on children, and two investigations were conducted on obese participants. A decreasing effect was found in the level of leptin and visfatin after cinnamon supplementation. Two out of three studies examined adiponectin levels and revealed non-significant effects of cinnamon consumption on this parameter. Two studies evaluated ghrelin levels and found an increase after cinnamon supplementation. The result of cinnamon supplementation on other biomarkers such as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, glucagon-like peptide 1, and resistin was inconsistent., Conclusion: The result of this systematic review indicated the increasing effect of cinnamon supplementation on ghrelin levels and decreasing effect on leptin and visfatin levels. Objectives: This study aims to identify a new barrier to the use of the Mini-Nutrition Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF), which is a malnutrition assessment tool for the risk assessment of sarcopenia in a nourished population., Methods: The MNA-SF was completed, and individuals with a score of > 11 were considered nourished in this cross-sectional feasibility study of a registry. Sarcopenia was assessed in 766 healthy, nourished adults (33.4% men, 64.9 ± 7.1 years) based on the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2)., Results: The MNA-SF scores for non-sarcopenia, pre-, confirmed, and severe sarcopenia were 13.59 ± 0.69, 13.73 ± 0.60, 12.64 ± 0.74, and 12.5 ± 0.71, respectively. The higher MNA-SF score association with pre-sarcopenia [odds ratio (OR): 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06-1.86, P  = 0.02], confirmed sarcopenia (OR = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.13-0.49, P  < 0.001), and severe sarcopenia (OR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.09-0.46, P  < 0.001) was as significant as in the MNA-SF categories. Individuals with a score = 13 (compared with 14), had a higher risk of confirmed sarcopenia (OR = 10.07, 95% CI: 1.92-52.71, P  = 006) and severe sarcopenia (OR = 12.09, 95% CI: 1.24-117.50, P  = 0.032). Individuals with a score of 12 had a higher risk of confirmed sarcopenia (OR = 30.94, 95% CI: 4.25-103.02, P  < 0.001) and severe sarcopenia (OR = 35.90, 95% CI: 4.25-303.07, P  = 0.001) compared with subjects with a score of 14. The models also showed that MNA-SF < 13 could predict sarcopenia., Conclusion: There was a significant association between MNA-SF and confirmed and severe sarcopenia in nourished people. Sarcopenia assessment in people with MNA-SF < 13 can be beneficial.
