The pursuit of a high-capacity anode material has been urgently required for commercializing sodium-ion batteries with a high energy density and an improved working safety. In the absence of thermodynamically stable sodium intercalated compounds with graphite, constructing nanostructures with expanded interlayer distances is still the mainstream option for developing high-performance carbonaceous anodes. In this regard, a surface-functionalized and pore-forming strategy through a facile CO2 thermal etching route was rationally adopted to engineer negligible oxygenated functionalities on commercial carbon for boosting the sodium storage process. Benefitted from the abundant ionic/electronic pathways and more active reaction sites in the microporous structure with noticeable pseudocapacitive behaviors, the functionalized porous carbon could achieve a highly reversible capacity of 505 mA h g-1 at 50 mA g-1, an excellent rate performance of 181 mA h g-1 at 16,000 mA g-1, and an exceptional rate cycle stability of 176 mA h g-1 at 3200 mA g-1 over 1000 cycles. These outstanding electrochemical properties should be ascribed to a synergistic mechanism, fully utilizing the graphitic and amorphous structures for synchronous intercalations of sodium ions and solvated sodium ion compounds, respectively. Additionally, the controllable generation and evolution of a robust but thin solid electrolyte interphase film with the emergence of obvious capacitive reactions on the defective surface, favoring the rapid migration of sodium ions and solvated species, also contribute to a remarkable electrochemical performance of this porous carbon black.

The porous carbon blacks rationally designed by a facile yet efficient NH3 thermal etching route have been investigated as anode materials in an ether-based electrolyte for sodium-ion batteries. The as-synthesized CBN35 carbon black with a 35% weight loss after NH3 thermal etching exhibited a large specific charge capacity of 352 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and a superior rate capability of 101 mAh g−1 at 16000 mA g−1, due to its highest microporosity, an appropriate surface area, a desirable microstructure, and a promising hybrid intercalation mechanism. Impressively, even cycled at 1600 mA g−1 over 3200 cycles, an outstanding reversible capacity of 103 mAh g−1 with a negligible 0.0162% capacity loss per cycle can still be achieved. Based on the multimodal characterizations including the structural probes of phase evolution for carbon materials, the electrochemical techniques, and the surface-sensitive XAS measurements, the exceptional electrochemical properties should stem from several merits of modified carbon black system. While the particular microporous structure provides relatively more accessible sodium storage sites, a novel hybrid intercalation mechanism in ether-based electrolyte would incorporate the sodium ion insertion into the disordered structure with the solvated sodium ion species co-intercalation into the graphitic phase. In addition to the diffusion-controlled redox reactions, the noticeable surface-induced pseudocapacitive reactions also significantly contribute to the charge storage upon sodiation and guarantee the rapid migrations of sodium ions/solvated compounds. This system further features a controlled emergence of a robust but thin solid electrolyte interphase layer, which could suppress the side reactions of active electrode with reactive electrolyte, maintain the fragile porous structure upon cycling, and facilitate the migrations of sodium ions and solvated sodium ion compounds.

The electrochemical reduction of carbon monoxide is a promising approach for the renewable production of carbon-based fuels and chemicals. Copper shows activity toward multi-carbon products from CO reduction, with reaction selectivity favoring two-carbon products; however, efficient conversion of CO to higher carbon products such as n-propanol, a liquid fuel, has yet to be achieved. We hypothesize that copper adparticles, possessing a high density of under-coordinated atoms, could serve as preferential sites for n-propanol formation. Density functional theory calculations suggest that copper adparticles increase CO binding energy and stabilize two-carbon intermediates, facilitating coupling between adsorbed *CO and two-carbon intermediates to form three-carbon products. We form adparticle-covered catalysts in-situ by mediating catalyst growth with strong CO chemisorption. The new catalysts exhibit an n-propanol Faradaic efficiency of 23% from CO reduction at an n-propanol partial current density of 11 mA cm-2.

The efficient ethanol electrosynthesis from CO2 is challenging with low selectivity at high CO2 electrolysis rates, due to the competition with H2 and other reduction products. Copper‐based bimetallic electrocatalysts are potential candidates for the CO2‐to‐ethanol conversion, but the secondary metal has mainly been focused on active components (such as Ag, Sn) for CO2 electroreduction, which also promote selectivity of ethylene or other reduction products rather than ethanol. Limited attention has been given to alkali‐earth metals due to their inherently active chemical property. Herein, we rationally synthesized a (111) facet‐oriented nano Cu2Mg (designated as Cu2Mg(111)) intermetallic compound with high‐density ordered Cu3‐Mg sites. The in situ Raman spectroscopy and density function theory calculations revealed that the Cu3−δ $_{^{\rm{{\rm \delta} }} }$ −‐Mg−δ $_{^{\rm{{\rm \delta} }} }$ + active sites allowed to increase *CO surface coverage, decrease reaction energy for *CO−CO coupling, and stabilize *CHCHOH intermediates, thus promoting the ethanol formation pathway. The Cu2Mg(111) catalyst exhibited a high FEC2H5OH of 76.2±4.8 % at 600 mA⋅cm−2, and a peak value of |jC2H5OH| of 720±34 mA⋅cm−2, almost 4 times of that using conventional Cu2Mg with (311) facets, comparable to the best reported values for the CO2‐to‐ethanol electroreduction. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is a promising high energy storage candidate in electric vehicles. However, the commonly employed ether based electrolyte does not enable to realize safe high-temperature Li-S batteries due to the low boiling and flash temperatures. Traditional carbonate based electrolyte obtains safe physical properties at high temperature but does not complete reversible electrochemical reaction for most Li-S batteries. Here we realize safe high temperature Li-S batteries on universal carbon-sulfur electrodes by molecular layer deposited (MLD) alucone coating. Sulfur cathodes with MLD coating complete the reversible electrochemical process in carbonate electrolyte and exhibit a safe and ultrastable cycle life at high temperature, which promise practicable Li-S batteries for electric vehicles and other large-scale energy storage systems.

We report herein a study in which we reveal the role of F- incorporated in the very anodic TiO2 nanotubes prepared electrochemically from a Ti foil using a fluoride based electrolyte. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to examine the as-prepared and the annealed TiO2 nanotubes. It is found that the additional electron resulting from the substitution of O2- by self-doped F- in the TiO2 lattice is localized in the t2g state. Consequently, a localized Ti3+ state can be tracked by a d-d energy loss peak with a constant energy of 1.6 eV in the RXES, in contrast to TiO2 nanostructures where this peak is hardly noticeable when F- is driven out of the lattice upon annealing.

The electronic structure and optical properties of Pd-modified TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) with a vertically aligned nanotubular structure grown by a two-step electrochemical anodization method have been studied using X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) at the Ti L3,2- and O K-edges was used to investigate the TiO2 NTs before and after Pd modification. It was found that Pd nanoparticles (NPs) are uniformly coated on the NT surface. The Pd L3-edge of the deposited Pd NPs shows a more intense whiteline and a blue shift for the Pd L3-edge absorption threshold relative to Pd metal, indicating charge depletion from the Pd 4d orbital as a result NP formation. The lattice of Pd is slightly contracted upon NP formation, although it remains fcc as revealed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis at the Pd K-edge. X-ray-excited optical luminescence (XEOL) together with XANES with element and site specificity was used to study the optical luminescence from TiO2 NTs. It was found that the defect-originated XEOL intensity dropped noticeably in the Pd NP-coated NTs, suggesting a Pd NP-TiO2-interaction-mediated reduction in the radiative recombination of electrons and holes. Further evidence is provided by Ti 2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), in which no low-energy loss features (d-d transitions) were observed. The implications of these results are discussed.

Halide solid electrolytes (SEs) have attracted significant attention due to their competitive ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability. Among typical halide SEs (chlorides, bromides, and iodides), substantial efforts have been dedicated to chlorides or bromides, with iodide SEs receiving less attention. Nevertheless, compared with chlorides or bromides, iodides have both a softer Li sublattice and lower reduction limit, which enable iodides to possess potentially high ionic conductivity and intrinsic anti‐reduction stability, respectively. Herein, we report a new series of iodide SEs: LixYI3+x (x=2, 3, 4, or 9). Through synchrotron X‐ray/neutron diffraction characterizations and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the LixYI3+x SEs belong to the high‐symmetry cubic structure, and can accommodate abundant vacancies. By manipulating the defects in the iodide structure, balanced Li‐ion concentration and generated vacancies enables an optimized ionic conductivity of 1.04 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C for Li4YI7. Additionally, the promising Li‐metal compatibility of Li4YI7 is demonstrated via electrochemical characterizations (particularly all‐solid‐state Li‐S batteries) combined with interface molecular dynamics simulations. Our study on iodide SEs provides deep insights into the relation between high‐symmetry halide structures and ionic conduction, which can inspire future efforts to revitalize halide SEs.
