Abstract The high performance of two-dimensional (2D) channel membranes is generally achieved by preparing ultrathin or forming short channels with less tortuous transport through self-assembly of small flakes, demonstrating potential for highly efficient water desalination and purification, gas and ion separation, and organic solvent waste treatment. Here, we report the construction of vertical channels in graphene oxide (GO) membrane based on a substrate template with asymmetric pores. The membranes achieved water permeance of 2647 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 while still maintaining an ultrahigh rejection rate of 99.9% for heavy metal ions, which is superior to the state-of-the-art 2D membranes reported. Furthermore, the membranes exhibited excellent stability during long-term filtration experiments for at least 48 h, as well as resistance to ultrasonic treatment for over 100 minutes. The vertical channels possess very short pathway for almost direct water transport and a highly effective channel area, meanwhile the asymmetric porous template enhances the packing of the inserted GO nanosheets to avoid the swelling effect of membrane. Our work provides a simple way to fabricate vertical channels of 2D nanofiltration membranes with high water purification performance.

Summary Background Inflammation plays an important role in the progression of cancer and other diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) was recognized as an objective biomarker reflecting immunoinflammatory status. This study aimed to identify the association between SII with all-cause, cancer and non-cancer mortality among general population in the United States. Methods 25,955 participants (≥ 20 years) were included from 2005 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and were divided into four groups according to the SII quartiles. Weighted multivariate Cox regression was used to assess the correlation between SII and mortality. Subgroup analyses were conducted to identify the effects of other covariates on the relationship between SII and mortality. A restricted cubic spline (RCS) model was subsequently used to explore the dose-response relationship between SII and mortality. Survival analysis was assessed using Kaplan-Meier method. Results In fully adjusted model, the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of individuals in Q4 were 1.24 (1.09, 1.41) for all-cause mortality and 1.41 (1.23, 1.63) for non-cancer mortality compared with Q1. Besides, the aHR and 95% CIs in Q2 of SII were 0.70 (0.50, 0.99) and in Q3 were 0.68 (0.52, 0.87) compared with Q1 for cancer mortality. In RCS analysis, non-linear relationships of J-shaped curves were observed in the association between SII with all-cause and non-cancer mortality. Additionally, a U-shaped curve was identified between SII and cancer mortality with a threshold value of 445.22. Conclusion Our findings imply that SII can serve as a potential prognosis indicator among general population. Elevated SII is associated with higher all-cause and non-cancer mortality. Furthermore, both the lowest and highest quartiles of the SII exhibit a correlation with heightened cancer mortality.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of severe pneumonia caused by human bocavirus (HBoV) infection to explore the associated risk factors. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of data from children hospitalized with HBoV pneumonia. Based on the severity of pneumonia, patients were categorized into severe pneumonia and non-severe pneumonia groups. Clinical manifestations, laboratory examination results, chest imaging and pathogens were analyzed. Logistic regression was employed to identify the risk factors for severe HBoV pneumonia. Results A total of 334 patients were admitted, with 44 (13.17%) patients diagnosed with severe pneumonia and 290 (86.83%) with non-severe pneumonia. There were no significant differences in age distribution, presence of fever, lung moist rales, pleural effusion and reduced breath sounds between the two groups (all P > 0.05). 57.19% of the HBoV-positive children co-infected with other pathogens and HRV was the most common co-infected pathogens with HBoV. No significant differences were observed in the rate of co-infection between the two groups (χ 2 = 0.50, p = 0.48). The univariate analysis revealed significant differences between the severe pneumonia group and the non-severe group in terms of gender distribution, presence of underlying chronic diseases, wheezing, premature delivery, lung wheezing rales, pneumothorax, bronchoscopy procedures, length of hospital stay, duration of symptoms prior to admission, neutrophil count, CRP levels, CKMB levels, IgA levels, CD3+(%), CD3+CD4+(%), CD3+CD8+%, and CD3−CD19+% (all P

The tiered geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) walls have been increasingly applied in the high and steep retaining soil structures. However, very little is known about the design method for the tiered GRS wall in practice. This study is aimed at proposing an upper-bound stability analysis method of a tiered GRS wall. The proposed method was firstly validated by the existing results from the centrifuge test and the numerical method, and then a parametric study was performed to investigate the effects of the cohesionless backfill friction angle φ1 and the wall geometric parameters including the offset distance, the total wall height, the batter angle δ, the number of tiers n, and wall height ratio of adjacent tiers on the dimensionless equivalent earth pressure coefficient KT. The analysis results demonstrated that as the φ1 increases, the shear strength of backfill is enhanced and thus the KT or the total reinforcement tensile force decreases, and the KT decreases with the increase of the offset distance at the initial stage and then becomes stable when it reaches a certain critical value. For a fixed offset distance, the KT or the total reinforcement tensile force decreases with the increase of the δ. For the two-tiered GRS walls having the offset distance less than the critical value, the wall with the smaller wall height ratio has a larger KT. Further, the variation of the location of the critical failure surfaces of tiered GRS walls was presented in this study with the variation of the φ1 and the wall geometry.

Abstract In order to study the movement characteristics of coal particles in the coal loading process of spiral drums, the spiral drum of a certain type of shearer was taken as the research object, and the intrinsic parameters of the materials were calibrated through the determination results of coal sample properties, the relevant parameters of coal particle adhesion were determined, and a discrete element model of spiral drum coal loading was established. The distribution of coal particle movement subsequent to the fracture of the coal wall was derived through simulation. By spatially dividing the envelope region of the spiral drum along the radial and axial directions, the number and velocity distribution of coal particles in different envelope regions were obtained. The study revealed that the number of coal particles in radial regions III and IV was significantly higher than that in regions I and II. Most of the coal particles in regions III and IV moved outward along the drum axis under the action of the spiral blades, while a small portion moved from regions III and IV towards regions I and II. The coal particles in the axial region near the outer side of the coal wall have a strong ability to flow towards the scraper conveyor, and the probability of coal particles being thrown towards the rear of the spiral drum is higher in the region near the end plate. The increase in traction speed has little effect on the velocity of coal particles in all directions within the envelope region, while the increase of drum rotation speed can significantly improve the velocity of coal particles in each region. Through statistical analysis, it was found that the coal loading rate decreases with the increasing of traction speed. As the drum speed increases, the coal loading rate first increases and then decreases. By comparing the results of industrial experiments and numerical simulations underground, the accuracy of the discrete element method used in this paper to analyze the particle motion in the envelope region of the spiral drum has been confirmed. The research results provide reference for the selection of motion parameters of coal shearer and the improving of coal loading efficiency of spiral drums.

Abstract Background In recent years, the total production of mud crab Scylla paramamosain has been declining, and the breeding areas are faced with land shortage and shortage of breeding production, which needs to be solved urgently. S. paramamosain can survive and grow in a wide range of salinities is an excellent variety suitable for saline-alkali water aquaculture. As a species with high economic value and strong adaptability to the environment, its cultivation under low salt conditions can not only improve the utilization efficiency of saline-alkali land, but also provide new possibilities for the sustainable development of aquaculture. Results A total of 248 different metabolites were identified by LC/GC-MS in the intestinal tract of S. paramamosain. These different metabolites were mainly concentrated in ‘Lipids and lips-like molecules’. Among them, 112 metabolites are upregulated, and among these upregulated metabolites are mainly ‘Fatty Acyls’ and ‘Glycerophospholipids’. The upregulation of these metabolites indicates an increase in lipid storage of S. paramamosain, which may increase the resistance of S. paramamosain to adverse environmental stress. Among them, 136 metabolic differentiates were down-regulated, mainly ‘Carboxylic acids and derivatives’. The down-regulation of these organic acids may indicate that organic acids are used as energy sources for the immune response to long-term environmental stress. Conclusion Under long-term chloride type low-salt saline-alkali water stress, S. paramamosain will shift to another homeostasis for development.

Abstract The rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) has made the construction and service capability evaluation of EV charging and battery swapping stations (CBSSs) more important. A comprehensive evaluation indicator system for the service capability evaluation of EV‐CBSSs is established, meticulously outlining the critical aspects of operational efficiency, economy, convenience, and reliability, each with multiple indicators for thorough assessment. To address the shortcomings of individual evaluation methods in evaluating the service capability of EV‐CBSSs, the game theory‐based combination weighting (GTCW) method is adopted, which integrates the advantages of the analytic hierarchy process method, entropy weight method, and grey relation analysis method. Specifically, the weights for each indicator are obtained separately using these three evaluation methods, and then combined using the GTCW method to calculate the final weights. In case studies, the service capability for each EV‐CBSS is calculated and compared between these three individual methods and the proposed GTCW method. Simulation results validate that the proposed evaluation indicator system and GTCW method can offer a more comprehensive evaluation of the service capability for EV‐CBSSs, providing guiding suggestions for future construction plans.

Abstract In yeast and mammals, the EXO70 subunit of the exocyst complex plays a key role in mediating the tethering of exocytic vesicles to the plasma membrane (PM). In plants, however, the role of EXO70 in regulating vesicle tethering during exocytosis remains unclear. In land plants, EXO70 has undergone significant evolutionary expansion, resulting in multiple EXO70 paralogues that may allow the exocyst to form various isoforms with specific functions. Previous research in Arabidopsis has shown that generally disrupting exocyst function leads to various defects in cellulose synthase (CESA) complex (CSC) trafficking. In this study, we utilized real-time imaging combined with genetic approaches to explore the role of EXO70A1, a member of the EXO70 family in Arabidopsis, in CSC trafficking. The exo70a1 mutant exhibited a decrease in crystalline cellulose content and a reduced density of functional CSCs in the PM. Moreover, the delivery of tdTomato-CESA6 from the cortex to the PM was compromised in the mutant, leading to the accumulation of CSC vesicles at the cell cortex. However, the velocity of tdTomato-CESA6 in the PM was unaffected in exo70a1. These findings suggest that EXO70A1 has a specific role in tethering CSCs to the PM.

Abstract Aerobic glycolysis is a hallmark of cancer and is regulated by growth factors, protein kinases and transcription factors. However, it remains poorly understood how these components interact to regulate aerobic glycolysis coordinately. Here, we show that sine oculis homeobox 1 (SIX1) phosphorylation integrates growth factors (e.g. TGFβ, EGF) to control aerobic glycolysis and determines its tumor-promoting activity. SIX1 is phosphorylated at serine 225 (S225) by growth factors-activated protein kinases ERK1/2 and its phosphorylation is responsible for glycolysis stimulated by some growth factors. SIX1 is dephosphorylated by the atypical protein phosphatase eyes absent 4 (EYA4). Phosphorylation blocks non-canonical ubiquitination and degradation of SIX1 through the E3 ubiquitin ligase FZR1. Unexpectedly, the non-canonical phosphorylation mimic SIX1 (S225K), but not the canonical phosphorylation mimic SIX1 (S225D/E), phenocopies the effects of SIX1 phosphorylation on glycolysis and cancer cell growth and metastasis in vitro and in mice. Compared to normal liver tissues, SIX1 phosphorylation at S225 (pS225) is upregulated in human liver cancer tissues. ERK1/2 expression is positively correlated with pS225 and EYA4 expression is negatively associated with pS225 in liver cancer specimens. Moreover, low expression of pS225 had longer disease-free survival and overall survival in patients with liver cancer. Thus, we identify a common mechanism underlying growth factors-mediated glycolysis, and provide a previously unidentified mode for non-classical phosphorylation mimics of a protein. Targeting growth factors/SIX1 signaling pathway may be beneficial to cancer treatment.

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) is an efficient method to remove nitrogen in municipal wastewater treatment. However, low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations are generally required, leading to serious membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). This study aimed to clarify the synergistic effect of biomass and DO on nitrogen removal and membrane fouling. To achieve this goal, four submerged MBRs equipped with ceramic membranes were operated with different biomass (mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS)) concentrations (3 000 mg/L, 5 000 mg/L, 7 500 mg/L, and 12 000 mg/L) under various DO concentrations (2.0 mg/L, 1.0 mg/L, and 0.5 mg/L). As a result, increasing biomass in the MBRs enhanced total nitrogen (TN) removal via SND, and excellent TN removal efficiencies of 60.7% and 75.8% were obtained using the MBR with an MLSS concentration of 12 000 mg/L and DO concentrations of 2.0 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L. However, a further decrease in DO deteriorated TN removal due to the inhibition of nitrification. Moreover, high MLSS concentrations were beneficial to membrane fouling control for ceramic membranes in MBRs. The lowest transmembrane pressure development rate was observed for the MBR with an MLSS concentration of 12 000 mg/L. High biomass offset the adverse effect of DO decrease on membrane fouling to some extent, and improved the stability of the reactor. Therefore, biomass might be an important parameter for membrane fouling reduction in ceramic MBRs. Overall, optimal biomass and DO concentrations for TN removal were identified, providing useful information for the successful operation of MBRs with efficient TN removal and membrane fouling control.

Abstract IS630/Tc1/mariner (ITm) represents the most widely distributed superfamily of DNA transposons in nature. Currently, bioinformatics research on ITm members primarily involves collecting data of existing and emerging members and organizing them into new groups or families. In the present study, our survey revealed that Tc1 and IS630 members have a broad host range, spanning across all six biological kingdoms (bacteria, fungi, plantae, animalia, archaea and protista) and viruses. The primary discoveries include the first Tn630 member—Tn630-NC1 and the closest homolog of IS630 from viruses—Tc1-C#1. By incorporating our discoveries into existing knowledge, we proposed a model to elucidate the formation of composite transposons. Organization of Tc1 and IS630 members into groups across biological kingdoms facilitates data collection for future research, particularly on their horizontal transfer between different kingdoms. The formation of composite transposons may result from asymmetric of terminal inverted repeats. IS630 should be merged with Tc1 into a single family IS630/Tc1. Furthermore, IS630 and its homologs constitute a valuable resource for studying horizontal gene transfer between gut bacteria and phages, opening up new avenues for research in this field.

Abstract The function of PD-1/PD-L1 axis have been intensively studied for immune escape of various cancers. However, the underlying function of PD-L2 remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that PD-L2 is majorly expressed in exosomes with surface localization by clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) cells. Tumor cell-derived exosome PD-L2 (TDE-PD-L2) exhibits high expression compared with TDE-PD-L1 in various cancers. In the absence of adaptive immune, TDE-PD-L2 suppresses tumor growth and metastasis. Under immune competence condition, TDE-PD-L2 is hijacked by immune cells in a PD-1-dependent manner to systematically dampen function of T cells via the increased proportion of the regulatory T cells and the decreased proportion of cytotoxic CD8+ T cells in both tumor-infiltrating T cells and spleen. The effects of TDE-PD-L2 on tumor is restored by antibodies targeting PD-L2. Collectively, we demonstrate that PD-1/TDE-PD-L2 axis systematically suppresses T cell functions, representing a potentially therapeutic strategy for ccRCC treatment.

Potato cyst nematodes (PCNs) are a significant threat to potato production, having caused substantial damage in many countries. Predicting the future distribution of PCN species is crucial to implementing effective biosecurity strategies, especially given the impact of climate change on pest species invasion and distribution. Machine learning (ML), specifically ensemble models, has emerged as a powerful tool in predicting species distributions due to its ability to learn and make predictions based on complex data sets. Thus, this research utilised advanced machine learning techniques to predict the distribution of PCN species under climate change conditions, providing the initial element for invasion risk assessment. We first used Global Climate Models to generate homogeneous climate predictors to mitigate the variation among predictors. Then, five machine learning models were employed to build two groups of ensembles, single-algorithm ensembles (ESA) and multi-algorithm ensembles (EMA), and compared their performances. In this research, the EMA did not always perform better than the ESA, and the ESA of Artificial Neural Network gave the highest performance while being cost-effective. Prediction results indicated that the distribution range of PCNs would shift northward with a decrease in tropical zones and an increase in northern latitudes. However, the total area of suitable regions will not change significantly, occupying 16–20% of the total land surface (18% under current conditions). This research alerts policymakers and practitioners to the risk of PCNs’ incursion into new regions. Additionally, this ML process offers the capability to track changes in the distribution of various species and provides scientifically grounded evidence for formulating long-term biosecurity plans for their control.

Abstract Background There is a growing interest in utilizing a combination of brain radiotherapy (RT) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) for patients diagnosed with brain metastases (BM) in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation-positive lung adenocarcinoma (LAC). The current status of this treatment strategy remains a subject of debate. Methods We initiated our study by conducting a comprehensive literature search using the SCI-expanded database of Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We utilized the VOSPviewer software to analyze various aspects of the research, including the year of publication, authorship, keywords, and country.Subsequently, we performed an extensive and systematic literature search on popular online databases. Our primary outcome measures were overall survival (OS) and intracranial progression-free survival (iPFS), both quantified by hazard ratios (HRs). Additionally, for data verification, we included data from patients in non-small cell lung cancer with brain metastasis who underwent therapeutic intervention at the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center of Sun Yat-sen University and the Radiotherapy Department of Hanzhong Central Hospital between August 2012 and November 2021. Results The bibliometric analysis revealed an increasing trend in research focused on the combination of RT and TKIs for the management of lung cancer brain metastases over the previous decade. Then, nine studies consistent with the research direction were included for meta-analysis. Abstract The immune checkpoint receptor, programmed cell death 1 (PD-1, encoded by PDCD1), mediates the immune escape of cancer, but whether PD-1 splicing isoforms contribute to this process is still unclear. Here, we identify an alternative splicing isoform of human PD-1, which carries a 28-base pairs extension retained from 5′ region of intron 2 (PD-1^28), is expressed in peripheral T cells and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes. PD-1^28 expression is induced on T cells upon activation and is regulated by an RNA binding protein, TAF15. Functionally, PD-1^28 inhibits T cell proliferation, cytokine production, and tumor cell killing in vitro. In vivo, T cell-specific exogenous expression of PD-1^28 promotes tumor growth in both a syngeneic mouse tumor model and humanized NOG mice inoculated with human lung cancer cells. Our study thus demonstrates that PD-1^28 functions as an immune checkpoint, and may contribute to resistance to immune checkpoint blockade therapy.

Abstract Background Calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) plays a key role in cotton tolerance to abiotic stress. However, its role in cotton heat stress tolerance is not well understood. Here, we characterize the GhCDPK gene family and their expression profiles with the aim of identifying CDPK genes associated with heat stress tolerance. Results This study revealed 48 GhCDPK members in the cotton genome, distributed on 18 chromosomes. Tree phylogenetic analysis showed three main clustering groups of the GhCDPKs. Cis-elements revealed many abiotic stress and phytohormone pathways conserved promoter regions. Similarly, analysis of the transcription factor binding sites (TFBDS) in the GhCDPK genes showed many stress and hormone related sites. The expression analysis based on qRT-PCR showed that GhCDPK16 was highly responsive to high-temperature stress. Subsequent protein-protein interactions of GhCDPK16 revealed predictable interaction with ROS generating, calcium binding, and ABA signaling proteins. Overexpression of GhCDPK16 in cotton and Arabidopsis improved thermotolerance by lowering ROS compound buildup. Under heat stress, GhCDPK16 transgenic lines upregulated heat-inducible genes GhHSP70, GHSP17.3, and GhGR1, as demonstrated by qRT-PCR analysis. Contrarily, GhCDPK16 knockout lines in cotton exhibited an increase in ROS accumulation. Furthermore, antioxidant enzyme activity was dramatically boosted in the GhCDPK16-ox transgenic lines. Conclusions The collective findings demonstrated that GhCDPK16 could be a viable gene to enhance thermotolerance in cotton and, therefore, a potential candidate gene for improving heat tolerance in cotton.

Abstract The inversion of substrate size specificity is an evolutionary roadblock for proteins. The Duf4243 dioxygenases GedK and BTG13 are known to catalyze the aromatic cleavage of bulky tricyclic hydroquinone. In this study, we discover a Duf4243 dioxygenase PaD that favors small monocyclic hydroquinones from the penicillic-acid biosynthetic pathway. Sequence alignments between PaD and GedK and BTG13 suggest PaD has three additional motifs, namely motifs 1-3, distributed at different positions in the protein sequence. X-ray crystal structures of PaD with the substrate at high resolution show motifs 1-3 determine three loops (loops 1-3). Most intriguing, loops 1-3 stack together at the top of the pocket, creating a lid-like tertiary structure with a narrow channel and a clearly constricted opening. This drastically changes the substrate specificity by determining the entry and binding of much smaller substrates. Further genome mining suggests Duf4243 dioxygenases with motifs 1-3 belong to an evolutionary branch that is extensively involved in the biosynthesis of natural products and has the ability to degrade diverse monocyclic hydroquinone pollutants. This study showcases how natural enzymes alter the substrate specificity fundamentally by incorporating new small motifs, with a fixed overall scaffold-architecture. It will also offer a theoretical foundation for the engineering of substrate specificity in enzymes and act as a guide for the identification of aromatic dioxygenases with distinct substrate specificities.

Abstract Observational and genetic studies have reported the relationship between dyslexia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Until now, the causal effect of dyslexia on AD risk has remained unclear. We conducted a two-sample univariable Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to determine the causal association between dyslexia and the risk of AD, vascular dementia (VD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and its four subtypes. First, we selected 42 dyslexia genetic variants from a large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) dataset and extracted their corresponding GWAS summary statistics from AD, VD, LBD, and FTD. Second, we selected four MR methods, including inverse-variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, and MR-PRESSO. Heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy, and leave-one-out sensitivity analysis were then used to evaluate the reliability of all causal estimates. We also conducted multivariable MR (MVMR) and mediation analysis to assess the potential mediating role of cognitive performance (CP) or educational achievement (EA) on the causal association between dyslexia and AD. Two MVMR methods, including MV IVW and MV-Egger, and two-step MR were used to perform the analysis. Using IVW, we found a significant causal association between increased dyslexia and increased risk of AD (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04–1.28, P = 0.006), but not VD, LBD, FTD, or its four subtypes. MR-PRESSO further supported the statistically significant association between dyslexia and AD (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.05–1.27, P = 0.006). All sensitivity analyses confirmed the reliability of causal estimates. Using MV IVW and mediation analysis, we found no causal relationship between dyslexia and AD after adjusting for CP but not EA, CP mediated the total effect of dyslexia on AD with a proportion of 46.32%. We provide genetic evidence to support a causal effect of increased dyslexia on increased risk of AD, which was largely mediated by CP. Reading activity may be a potential intervention strategy for AD by improving cognitive function.

Speech listeners focus on a speaker's face to acquire different information in social communication. Fixation on the mouth associates with language processing and attention to the eyes is mainly driven by social/emotional cues. Here, we investigated how selective attention to the eyes and mouth would vary with language-emotion interaction during speech processing when unbalanced Chinese-English bilinguals [Chinese, the first language (L1); English, a later-learned language (LX) of upper-intermediate proficiency] viewed a speaker narrating stories of different valence in their L1 and LX. Results showed that when listening to negative stories in Chinese relative to English, bilinguals attended to the eyes more, indicating that LX emotionality is weaker than that in L1, reducing gaze to the eyes where human adults primarily seek for emotional cues. In Chinese, compared with neutral speech, both positive and negative stories increased mouth attention and this effect was not observed in English, suggesting a particularly important role of the mouth in processing emotional information in speech and confirming emotionality reduction in LX. Our study reveals for the first time how linguistic and emotional cues integrated in speech alters attention allocation on speakers' face to facilitate both speech comprehension and emotional perception in social communication.

A growing body of research has provided evidence for the foreign language effect on thinking, notably decision-making. Our prior work found reduction of recency effect following positive feedback in a foreign language as compared to the native tongue during even-probability gambling. However, the fundamental mechanisms underlying this effect remain unclear. The present study, therefore, aims to probe into this by engaging Chinese-English bilinguals in a functional magnetic resonance imaging version of our gambling task, which required participants to make decisions between playing and leaving equal-odds bets whilst manipulating language and valence of feedback. Results showed fewer 'play' choices following positive feedback presented in English relative to Chinese while no cross-language differences were observed after negative feedback. This valence-dependent language effect on risk-taking behaviour was supported by a language-emotion-decision neural circuit involving interplay between the right lingual gyrus, left fusiform gyrus, and right inferior frontal gyrus. Overall, our findings suggest valence-differential mechanisms of the foreign language effect in the risky decision. That is, the use of a foreign language in feedback presentation attenuates emotional reaction to positive feedback and thus diminishes subsequent risk-taking behaviour. Differently, negative counterparts seem to trigger detachment from negative emotion, leading to dissociation between feedback-encoding and decision-making.

ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to present a comprehensive overview of current advancements, prominent areas of interest, emerging trends, and frontiers in global research concerning the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The aim is to offer valuable insights and guidance for future research endeavors in this field.MethodsWe conducted a literature search on the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis using the Web of Science Core Collection database spanning from 2009 to 2024. Visualization of countries, institutions, authors, and keywords was performed using CiteSpace.Results1,002 English articles were included in this study. Between 2009 and 2020, publications remained relatively low and stable. However, in 2021, interest in the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis began to surge, a noticeable increase in publications, with a peak reached in 2022. The United States emerged as the leading contributor among countries, institutions, and authors. Nanjing University and Peter O. Newton were the most prolific institutions and authors, respectively. The academic journal with the highest number of published articles was Spine. Notably, areas such as Cobb angle measurement, the efficacy of non-surgical treatments for AIS, and factors influencing the success of brace treatment garnered significant attention as hot topics in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis treatment.ConclusionThe prognosis remains consistent across patients with varying degrees of curvature in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Given the limited understanding of its etiology, the relationship between curvature and prognosis, as well as the exploration of its underlying causes, could emerge as new research directions in the future.

Background The prevalence of chronic coronary heart diseases (CHDs) increases with age in the elderly, which represents one of the top-ranked causes of death and disease burden.Methods This study aimed to investigate the management efficiency of telemedicine based on the remote multiparameter monitoring in elderly patients with CHD. A total of 1248 elderly patients diagnosed with CHD were enrolled. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups, wearable equipment-based telemedical management (WTM) group and traditional follow-up management (TFM) group. Face-to-face clinical interview at least once every 2 months was required in TFM group to collect the medical records. Patients in WTM group were provided with wearable equipment to complete remote monitoring, real-time alerts and health intervention via virtual consultations and remote medication recommendations.Results The mean age of patients in WTM group and TFM group was 71.1 (68.0–82.0) years and 71.0 (68.0–81.0) years, respectively‏. Porcine circovirus (PCV) belongs to the genus Circovirus within the family Circoviridae; it has the smallest genome and a complicated classification system comprising PCV1, PCV2, PCV3, and PCV4. Most types of these viruses can cause animals to develop serious diseases; in pigs in particular, it may manifest as postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), reproductive failure, porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), congenital tremors (CTs), proliferative and necrotizing pneumonia (PNP), lymphoid injury, and immunosuppression. Different types of PCVs cause different types of diseases and sometimes feature no pathogenicity; these various PCV types are associated with different pathomechanisms in animals. In this review, the genomic composition and systemic pathomechanisms of porcine circoviruses are introduced, and future research prospects are discussed.

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is an important pathogen in the aquaculture industry that poses a serious threat to the shrimp farming industry. In this study, Litopenaeus vannamei was selected as the research object to determine the critical concentration of ammonia nitrogen that triggered the outbreak of WSSV. Multiomics techniques were used to study the comprehensive reaction mechanism of L. vannamei, which is in a state of WSSV infection and transforms into acute infection under conditions of ammonia nitrogen stress, from physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic perspectives. The toxicity of ammonia nitrogen and WSSV to L. vannamei was measured by the LC50 test, and semilethal concentrations at 72 hpi, 96 hpi, 120 hpi, and 144 hpi were obtained. H&E staining revealed pathological changes in the intestinal tract induced by WSSV infection, ammonia nitrogen stress, and combined ammonia nitrogen and WSSV stress in L. vannamei. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of the DEGs revealed that activation of the PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway triggers metabolic reprogramming of cells, which is conducive to the WSSV-induced Warburg effect and proliferation. Blocking the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway could reduce the apoptosis of WSSV-infected cells, thereby inhibiting viral replication. Notably, ammonia nitrogen stress disrupted the balance between shrimp and WSSV latent infection, increased the susceptibility to WSSV infection, and aggravated the severity of infection. The obstruction of ammonia metabolism leads to an increase in ammonia nitrogen levels, aggravates the inflammatory response and oxidative stress of the host, causes intracellular oxidative damage and host tissue damage, weakens the immune function of the host, and cannot effectively resist WSSV infection, leading to the acceleration of WSSV replication and disease outbreaks.

Abstract Background In recent decades, early rehabilitation after Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) repair has been proposed. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to compare different immobilisation durations in order to determine the optimal duration after open surgery for ATR repair. Methods This study included 1088 patients (mean age, 34.9 ± 5.9 years) who underwent open surgery for acute ATR repair. The patients were categorised into four groups (A, B, C, and D) according to postoperative immobilisation durations of 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks, respectively. All patients received the same suture technique and a similar rehabilitation protocol after brace removal,; they were clinically examined at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 weeks postoperatively, with a final follow-up at a mean of 19.0 months. The primary outcome was the recovery time for the one-leg heel-rise height (OHRH). Secondary outcomes included the time required to return to light exercise (LE) and the recovery times for the range of motion (ROM). Data regarding the surgical duration, complications, the visual analogue scale (VAS) score for pain, the Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS), and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle-Hindfoot Scale score were also collected. Abstract Background and aim Bismuth and non-bismuth quadruple therapy are the guideline-recommended first-line therapy in children with Helicobacter pylori infection in areas with high antibiotic resistance. However, their efficacy in children is uncertain and there are few well-designed studies. Here, we evaluated the eradication rates of standard triple therapy, bismuth-based quadruple therapy and sequential therapy in children with H. pylori infection. Methods A randomised controlled trial was conducted in children infected with H. pylori in West China Second Hospital. They were randomly assigned to 14-day standard triple therapy (omeprazole + amoxicillin + clarithromycin), 14-day bismuth quadruple therapy (bismuth + omeprazole + amoxicillin + clarithromycin) and 10-day sequential therapy (omeprazole + amoxicillin for 5 days followed by omeprazole + clarithromycin + metronidazole for 5 days). The eradication rate was assessed by a 13C-urea breath test 4 to 6 weeks after therapy completion. Symptom improvement and adverse events were compared among the groups. Results In total, 132 patients were enrolled. The eradication rates of 14-day standard triple therapy, 14-day bismuth quadruple therapy and 10-day sequential therapy were 70.0%, 78.9% and 50.0% in per-protocol analysis and 63.6%, 68.2% and 43.2% in intention-to-treat analysis, respectively. Symptom improvement and adverse drug event rates were similar in the three groups. Conclusion The three therapeutic regimens evaluated in this study are equally not recommendable for H. pylori infection treatment due to unsatisfactory eradication rates. The high prevalence of clarithromycin resistance makes the use of clarithromycin-based quadruple therapy not advisable, even in combination with amoxicillin and bismuth salts.

Abstract Background Chronic cough in children is closely related to gastroesophageal reflux (GER). However, this association has not been adequately studied due to a lack of diagnostic tools. Combined esophageal multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH (MII-pH) monitoring is considered the most accurate method for evaluating the association between symptoms and reflux, but data on its use in children with chronic cough are still lacking. We aimed to assess the association between chronic cough and GER in children through MII-pH monitoring. Methods Children with chronic cough (> 4 weeks) who were suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) were selected to undergo 24 h MII-pH monitoring at our hospital. Patients were divided into groups according to their age, body position, reflux index (RI) or total reflux events, and the differences between the groups were analyzed. Then the significance and value of 24 h pH and impedance monitoring in chronic cough and the relationship between chronic cough and reflux were discussed. Results Overall, 426 patients were included. The median age was 12 months (interquartile range: 6–39.5 months), 129 (30.3%) patients had RI > 7% detected by pH-metry, and 290 (68.1%) patients had positive diagnosis based on the impedance data. GER predominantly occurred in the upright position and mostly involved weakly acidic reflux and mixed gas–liquid reflux. Abstract This study aimed to explore physicians’ and pharmacists’ knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) regarding the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular toxicity associated with cancer treatment. A multicenter cross-sectional study included physicians and pharmacists between April 2023 and June 2023. The study included 918 participants (514 physicians and 404 pharmacists). The average scores of knowledge, attitudes, and practice were 11.6 ± 3.39, 24.7 ± 2.6, and 26.3 ± 6.8 points. Abstract Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent type of arthritis and the main reason for progressive disability in middle-aged and older people. Studies of candidate genes may provide a novel insight and treatment strategy for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between KOA susceptibility and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the ADAMTS-5 gene. Materials and methods The case group included 188 patients from Luoyang Orthopedic Hospital with clinically and radiographically diagnosed primary KOA, and the control group included 100 age-matched individuals without KOA. Fifteen ADAMTS-5 SNPs were assayed using MALDI-TOF MS. Allelic and haplotypic frequencies were compared between the groups. The relationship between genotype distribution and risk of KOA was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Results The frequency of A allele in rs2249350 site in the KOA group was significantly lower (odds ratio [OR]: 0.761; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.612–0.947; P = 0.016), while that of C allele was higher than that in the control group (OR: 1.176; 95% CI: 1.025–1.351; P = 0.016). AA genotype and gene model, especially recessive gene model at rs2249350 locus, negatively correlated with KOA risk after adjustment for sex, body mass index, age, and occupation (AA vs. CC: OR: 0.288; 95% CI: 0.124–0.669; P = 0.004; AA vs. CA + CC: OR: 0.348; 95% CI: 0.162–0.749; P = 0.007). Meanwhile, one protective haplotype, GA (rs229054, rs2249350) (OR: 0.763; 95% CI: 0.614–0.949; P = 0.017), and one high-risk haplotype, GC (rs229054, rs2249350) (OR: 1.259; 95% CI: 1.032–1.537; P = 0.019), were found in this study. Conclusion Despite a limited sample size, our study suggests that the rs2249350 polymorphism in the ADAMTS-5 gene is one of the genetic factors influencing the risk of KOA. The A allele and AA genotype of rs2249350 may protect from KOA, whereas C allele and CC genotype increase the risk of KOA. In addition, the GA haplotype (rs229054, rs2249350) might be associated with a decreased risk of KOA, whereas the GC haplotype (rs229054, rs2249350) may be a risk factor for KOA. Additional larger-sized studies in more ethnically diverse populations are needed to confirm these findings.

Reinforcement configuration of Al composites has recently been at the center of attention. In this study, through the analysis of microstructure and tensile properties, effects of Cu content on the reinforcing behaviors of AlN network were investigated in details. Results indicated that the increasing amount of Cu would form micron Al2Cu which would decorated on the AlN network. With the increasing amount of Cu addition from 1.5% to 6%, the particle size of Al2Cu increased from 1 μm to 10 μm. Besides the micron Al2Cu, Cu elements were also existed in θ′ precipitates in the region where were poor of AlN and segregated on the surface of AlN. Given the microstructure changes with different Cu addition, the tensile properties at room temperature increased with Cu addition while the average tensile strength at 350 °C were decreased from 102 MPa to 85 MPa. The addition of elements would affect the bearing capacity of the 8.2AlN/Al–Cu composites at 350 °C. Firstly, the micron Al2Cu phase would suffer the load and get stress concentration. It would lead to the premature imitation of voids and strongly impair the strengthening behavior of AlN network. Secondly, the nano θ′ precipitates would become coarsen and the hinder effects of dislocation would be enhanced at 350 °C. Finally, the segregated Cu atoms on the AlN surface could increase the deformation coordination of AlN network and help decrease the stress concentration.

Abstract Background Ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. However, studies focusing on elderly and very elderly patients are scarce. Hence, our study aimed to characterize and investigate the long-term prognostic implications of ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular diseases in elderly Chinese patients. Methods This retrospective cohort study included 1026 patients aged ≥ 65 years who were categorized into the mono ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular disease (MICCD) (either coronary artery disease or ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack) (n = 912) and the comorbidity of ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular disease (CICCD) (diagnosed with both coronary artery disease and ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack at admission) (n = 114). The primary outcome was all-cause death. The mortality risk was evaluated using the Cox proportional hazards risk model with multiple adjustments by conventional and propensity-score-based approaches. Results Of the 2494 consecutive elderly patients admitted to the hospital, 1026 (median age 83 years [interquartile range]: 76.5–86.4; 94.4% men) met the inclusion criteria. Abstract Objective To evaluate the consistency between doctors and artificial intelligence (AI) software in analysing and diagnosing pulmonary nodules, and assess whether the characteristics of pulmonary nodules derived from the two methods are consistent for the interpretation of carcinomatous nodules. Materials and Methods This retrospective study analysed participants aged 40–74 in the local area from 2011 to 2013. Pulmonary nodules were examined radiologically using a low-dose chest CT scan, evaluated by an expert panel of doctors in radiology, oncology, and thoracic departments, as well as a computer-aided diagnostic(CAD) system based on the three-dimensional(3D) convolutional neural network (CNN) with DenseNet architecture(InferRead CT Lung, IRCL). Consistency tests were employed to assess the uniformity of the radiological characteristics of the pulmonary nodules. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy. Logistic regression analysis is utilized to determine whether the two methods yield the same predictive factors for cancerous nodules. Results A total of 570 subjects were included in this retrospective study. The AI software demonstrated high consistency with the panel's evaluation in determining the position and diameter of the pulmonary nodules (kappa = 0.883, concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) = 0.809, p = 0.000). The comparison of the solid nodules' attenuation characteristics also showed acceptable consistency (kappa = 0.503). In patients diagnosed with lung cancer, the area under the curve (AUC) for the panel and AI were 0.873 (95%CI: 0.829–0.909) and 0.921 (95%CI: 0.884–0.949), respectively. However, there was no significant difference (p = 0.0950). The maximum diameter, solid nodules, subsolid nodules were the crucial factors for interpreting carcinomatous nodules in the analysis of expert panel and IRCL pulmonary nodule characteristics. Conclusion AI software can assist doctors in diagnosing nodules and is consistent with doctors' evaluations and diagnosis of pulmonary nodules.

Abstract Background Acute thrombotic events play a major role in various cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, direct thrombus imaging can be proved beneficial for early diagnosis and prompt therapy of thrombosis. Our study investigated targeted dual‐modality cyclic arginine‐glycine‐aspartic micro bubbles (cRGD‐MBs) for direct imaging of thrombi by fluorescence and ultrasound. Methods cRGD‐MBs were prepared by mechanical vibration and chemical chelation methods. Results Coulter counter analysis demonstrated that the cRGD‐MBs were well dispersed, with diameters ranging from 1 to 3 μm. They emitted bright red fluorescence under an excitation wavelength of 660 nm. In vivo fluorescence and ultrasound imaging revealed that cRGD‐MBs accumulated at the site of thrombus in the carotid artery with significant fluorescence and ultrasonic signal. Conclusions This study showed that novel microbubble cRGD‐MBs were successfully synthesized, and that these could potentially be used as contrast agents for immediate diagnosis of acute thrombus in vivo.
