Honey is a natural substance produced by honeybees and is widely consumed as food worldwide. Honey has anti-inflammatory effects, which are related to its antibacterial and antioxidant functions. The anti-inflammatory properties of honey can be explored from two aspects: Basic research studies that reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying the biological functions of honey and identify its effective components, and clinical research studies that evaluate the healing effects of honey in inflammatory diseases. Basic research studies are indicated that honey has anti-inflammatory properties and further elucidated the relevant molecular mechanisms. The anti-inflammatory functions of honey are highly related to its components, specifically flavonoids, phenolic acids, glucose oxidase, hydrogen peroxide, and methylglyoxal. These effective constituents exhibit anti-inflammatory effects by regulating immune cell function, affecting inflammatory cytokines, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and acting as antioxidants. Honey can attenuate gastrointestinal inflammation, aid the recovery of intestinal microbiota, relieve symptoms of chronic sinusitis, and prevent radiation-induced oral mucositis. Based on honey-related basic and clinical research studies conducted over the past five years, this article reviews the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of honey, the functions of its effective constituents, and the applications of honey in inflammatory diseases.

Abstract Background Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare and highly malignant type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), for which the treatment of choice is surgery. For peripheral PSC growing outward and invading the chest wall, a complete resection of the affected lung lobes and the invaded chest wall can improve long-term prognosis. However, when the extent of the resected chest wall is large, reconstruction is often required to reduce the risk of postoperative complications. Here, we present a case of PSC invading the chest wall treated with successful extended radical resection for lung cancer and chest wall reconstruction. Case presentation A 58-year-old male patient with a nodule in the right upper lobe that had been identified on physical examination 2 years before presentation presented to our hospital with a recent cough, expectoration, and chest pain. Imaging revealed a mass in the right upper lobe that had invaded the chest wall. Preoperative puncture pathology revealed poorly differentiated NSCLC. We performed extended radical resection for lung cancer under open surgery and reconstructed the chest wall using stainless steel wire and polypropylene meshes. The procedure was uneventful, and the patient was discharged 7 days postoperatively. Furthermore, the final pathology revealed PSC. Conclusions This case underscores the feasibility of surgical R0 resection in patients with PSC with chest wall invasion and no lymph node metastasis, potentially enhancing long-term outcomes. The novel aspect of this case lies in the individualized chest wall reconstruction for a large defect, using cost-effective materials that offered satisfactory structural support and postoperative recovery, thereby providing a valuable reference for similar future surgical interventions.

Abstract Background While the role of low-dose computed tomography (CT) in lung cancer screening is established, its limitations in detailing pulmonary vascular variations are less emphasized. Three-dimensional reconstruction technology allows surgeons to reconstruct a patient’s bronchial and pulmonary vascular structures using CT scan results. However, low-dose CT may not provide the same level of clarity as enhanced CT in displaying pulmonary vascular details. This limitation can be unfavorable for preoperative detection of potential pulmonary vascular variations, especially in cases involving planned segmentectomy. Case Presentation We report a case of a 58-year-old female with lung cancer, initially planned for Da Vinci robot-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomy. Unexpectedly, during surgery, a pulmonary vein variation in the right upper lobe was discovered, leading to a change in the surgical method to a lobectomy. The patient had four variant right upper lobe veins draining into the superior vena cava and one into the left atrium. The surgery was complicated by significant bleeding and postoperative pulmonary congestion. Postoperative pathology confirmed adenocarcinoma. Conclusions This case highlights the importance of meticulous intraoperative exploration, particularly in cases involving planned segmentectomy, as unexpected pulmonary vein variations can significantly affect surgical decision-making. While three-dimensional reconstruction based on preoperative CT data is a valuable tool, it may not capture the full complexity of the anatomical variations. We discuss potential preoperative imaging techniques, including contrast-enhanced CT and CT angiography, as methods to better identify these variations. The enhanced visualization provided by robot-assisted surgery plays a crucial role in identifying and adapting to these variations, underscoring the advantages of this surgical approach. Our report contributes to the existing literature by providing a detailed account of how these principles were applied in a real-world scenario, reinforcing the need for surgical adaptability and awareness of the limitations of low-dose CT in complex cases.

Abstract Background Worldwide, gastric cancer is a leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality. This study aims to devise and validate a scoring system based on readily available clinical data to predict the risk of gastric cancer in a large Chinese population. Methods We included a total of 6,209,697 subjects aged between 18 and 70 years who have received upper digestive endoscopy in Hong Kong from 1997 to 2018. A binary logistic regression model was constructed to examine the predictors of gastric cancer in a derivation cohort (n = 4,347,224), followed by model evaluation in a validation cohort (n = 1,862,473). The algorithm's discriminatory ability was evaluated as the area under the curve (AUC) of the mathematically constructed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results Age, male gender, history of Helicobacter pylori infection, use of proton pump inhibitors, non‐use of aspirin, non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and statins were significantly associated with gastric cancer. A scoring of ≤8 was designated as “average risk (AR)”. Scores at 9 or above were assigned as “high risk (HR)”. The prevalence of gastric cancer was 1.81% and 0.096%, respectively, for the HR and LR groups. The AUC for the risk score in the validation cohort was 0.834, implying an excellent fit of the model. Conclusions This study has validated a simple, accurate, and easy‐to‐use scoring algorithm which has a high discriminatory capability to predict gastric cancer. The score could be adopted to risk stratify subjects suspected as having gastric cancer, thus allowing prioritized upper digestive tract investigation.

Introduction Segmentectomy and lobectomy are the main surgical procedures for early-stage lung cancer. However, few studies have analysed patient-reported outcomes after segmentectomy versus lobectomy. This study aims to compare patient-reported outcomes—such as symptoms, daily functioning and quality of life—between thoracoscopic segmentectomy and lobectomy for early-stage lung cancer during the 1 year after surgery.Methods and analysis Overall, 788 newly diagnosed patients with early-stage lung cancer (tumour size ≤2 cm), who are scheduled to undergo thoracoscopic segmentectomy or lobectomy, will be recruited in this multicentre, prospective cohort study. The patients will receive standardised care after surgery. The Perioperative Symptom Assessment for Lung Surgery—a validated lung cancer surgery-specific scale—will be used to assess the symptoms and functions at baseline, at discharge and monthly after discharge for 1 year. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 and Lung Cancer module 29 will be used to assess the patients’ quality of life at the same time points. The primary outcome will be the shortness of breath scores during the first year after thoracoscopic segmentectomy and lobectomy and will be compared using mixed-effects models. The secondary outcomes will include other symptoms, indicators of daily functioning, quality of life scores and traditional clinical outcomes. These will be compared using mixed-effects models and the Student’s t-test, non-parametric test or Χ2 test. Propensity score matching will be used to ensure an even distribution of known confounders between the groups.Ethics and dissemination The Ethics Committee for Medical Research and New Medical Technology of Sichuan Cancer Hospital approved this study (approval number: SCCHEC-02-2022-002). All participants will be instructed to provide informed consent. The manuscript is based on protocol version 3.0. The fractured zone poses a significant risk to construction safety and structure durability in tunnel engineering. However, the effect of excavation methods has not been thoroughly investigated in previous studies. This paper presents a series of 1:30 scale 3D model tests on fault tunnels under the coupling effect of different fault dip angles and construction steps. We measured and analyzed the rock mass deformation and lining structure stress to explore the influence of tunnel excavation by the CD method. The model test results were verified by numerical simulation using the prototype tunnel parameters. Our results show that steeper fault dips correspond to greater radial pressure of the surrounding rock, and pressure in both haunt positions changes more significantly than that in the vault position, while pressure in the side-wall position changes only slightly. Additionally, considerable deformation can be observed in the vault and both haunt positions, with a rock mass relaxation range of less than 1.0 D. For the lining structure stress of each point in the second excavation cycle, larger lining stress is measured in the case of a fault dip of 75° than that in cases when the fault dip equals 45° and 60°, respectively. The biggest stress is observed in the side-wall position after the mid-partition is mantled to form a closed-loop lining structure. Overall, our findings provide valuable insights into the construction response of tunnels through faults and highlight the importance of considering excavation methods in tunnel engineering.

Introduction Tobacco use poses a threat to the health of pregnant women and their children. Our study assessed the association between maternal exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) during pregnancy and children’s cerebral palsy (CP) in Shandong, China. Methods In our observational study, 5067 mother–child pairs were included from Shandong Province, China. Mothers filled in questionnaires about exposure to SHS during pregnancy. Statistical analysis and logistic regression models were built in R program to estimate the association in adjusted odds ratio (AOR) between SHS exposure during pregnancy and risk of children’s CP, after adjustment for potential confounders including delivery mode and baby’s birthweight. Results Exposure to SHS was noted among 3663 (72.3%) of the 5067 non-smoking mothers during their pregnancy. Of the 239 CP children within the study, 192 (80.3%) were exposed to SHS during pregnancy. Children born to mothers exposed to SHS during pregnancy had a higher risk of CP (AOR=1.44; 95% CI: 1.02–2.04) than those born to non-exposed mothers, the risk increased by exposure time in the logistic regression model. The association between SHS exposure during pregnancy and CP children remained significant when adjusting for delivery mode and infant’s birthweight due to their significant association with CP, with an AOR of 1.46 (95% CI: 1.13–1.91) for 1–4 days/week and 1.63 (95% CI: 1.22–2.01) for 5–7 days/week exposure to SHS. Conclusions Our study suggests that maternal exposure to secondhand smoke during pregnancy is associated with children’s CP. Future preventive interventions of CP should include strategies that target the antenatal women who are exposed to SHS.

Herein we fabricated the supported single-atom silver catalysts using an in situ molten salt method. The Mn2O3 nanowires supported single-atom silver catalyst (i.e., 0.06 wt% Ag/Mn2O3) exhibited excellent catalytic activity for toluene combustion, with the temperatures required for 50 and 90% of toluene conversions being 170 and 205 °C, respectively, at a space velocity of 40,000 mL/(g h). However, the toluene conversion at 205 °C quickly decreased from 90 to 30% within 2.5 h of on-stream reaction. Based on the various characterization results, we found that there were no aggregation of Ag particles, no change in crystal structure of the Mn2O3 nanowire support, and no carbon deposition on the catalyst surface, and the quick deactivation of 0.06 wt% Ag/Mn2O3 was mainly associated with the low oxygen activation ability. The proper CeO2 addition to the 0.06 wt% Ag/Mn2O3 catalyst was found to not only improve the catalytic activity but also significantly enhance the stability of the catalyst. Toluene conversion at 195 °C over 0.63 wt% CeO2-0.06 wt% Ag/Mn2O3 decreased by only 10% in 50 h of on-stream reaction. Because Ag and CeO2 particles were highly dispersed on the Mn2O3 nanowire support, the oxygen species formed at the surface oxygen vacancies of CeO2 could efficiently migrate to the active sites (i.e., the interface of Ag-Mn2O3) and replenish the surface reactive lattice oxygen species. Thus, the present single-atom silver catalyst is an alternative for commercial noble metal catalysts for the removal of VOCs. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a participatory training program in preventing accidental occupational injuries in factories in Shenzhen, China. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized study with the worker as the unit of analysis, providing 918 workers from 30 factories participatory training. Two control groups received traditional didactic training, including 907 workers from the same 30 factories and 1654 workers in matched control factories. We used generalized estimating equations to compare the before/after person-based injury rate difference in the three groups and binary logistic regression to compare the re-injury rates. RESULTS: The person- and event-based incidence rates of accidental injury in the intervention group reduced from 89.3 to 52.1 per 1000 workers (P=0.002) and from 138.3 to 74.5 per 1000 person-years (P

The pervasive use of toxic nitroaromatics in industrial processes and their prevalence in industrial effluent has motivated the development of remediation strategies, among which is their catalytic reduction to the less toxic and synthetically useful aniline derivatives. While this area of research has a rich history with innumerable examples of active catalysts, the majority of systems rely on expensive precious metals and are submicron- or even a few-nanometer-sized colloidal particles. Such systems provide invaluable academic insight but are unsuitable for practical application. Herein, we report the fabrication of catalysts based on ultralow loading of the semiprecious metal ruthenium on 2–4 mm diameter spherical alumina monoliths. Ruthenium loading is achieved by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and catalytic activity is benchmarked using the ubiquitous para-nitrophenol, NaBH4 aqueous reduction protocol. Recyclability testing points to a very robust catalyst system with intrinsic ease of handling.

Colistin is considered to be an antimicrobial of last-resort for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. The recent global dissemination of mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes is an urgent public health threat. An accurate estimate of the global prevalence of mcr genes, their reservoirs and the potential pathways for human transmission are required to implement control and prevention strategies, yet such data are lacking. Publications from four English (PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Web of Science) and two Chinese (CNKI and WANFANG) databases published between 18 November 2015 and 30 December 2018 were identified. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the prevalence of mcr genes in bacteria isolated from humans, animals, the environment and food products were investigated. A total of 974 publications were identified. 202 observational studies were included in the systematic review and 71 in the meta-analysis. mcr genes were reported from 47 countries across six continents and the overall average prevalence was 4.7% (0.1−9.3%). China reported the highest number of mcr-positive strains. Pathogenic Escherichia coli (54%), isolated from animals (52%) and harboring an IncI2 plasmid (34%) were the bacteria with highest prevalence of mcr genes. The estimated prevalence of mcr-1 pathogenic E. coli was higher in food-animals than in humans and food products, which suggests a role for foodborne transmission. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of prevalence of the mcr gene by source, organism, genotype and type of plasmid.

This study aimed to evaluate the associations between types of night shift work and different indices of obesity using the baseline information from a prospective cohort study of night shift workers in China.A total of 3,871 workers from five companies were recruited from the baseline survey. A structured self-administered questionnaire was employed to collect the participants' demographic information, lifetime working history, and lifestyle habits. Participants were grouped into rotating, permanent and irregular night shift work groups. Anthropometric parameters were assessed by healthcare professionals. Multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations between night shift work and different indices of obesity.Night shift workers had increased risk of overweight and obesity, and odds ratios (ORs) were 1.17 (95% CI, 0.97-1.41) and 1.27 (95% CI, 0.74-2.18), respectively. Abdominal obesity had a significant but marginal association with night shift work (OR = 1.20, 95% CI, 1.01-1.43). A positive gradient between the number of years of night shift work and overweight or abdominal obesity was observed. Permanent night shift work showed the highest odds of being overweight (OR = 3.94, 95% CI, 1.40-11.03) and having increased abdominal obesity (OR = 3.34, 95% CI, 1.19-9.37). Irregular night shift work was also significantly associated with overweight (OR = 1.56, 95% CI, 1.13-2.14), but its association with abdominal obesity was borderline (OR = 1.26, 95% CI, 0.94-1.69). By contrast, the association between rotating night shift work and these parameters was not significant.Permanent and irregular night shift work were more likely to be associated with overweight or abdominal obesity than rotating night shift work. These associations need to be verified in prospective cohort studies.
