Abstract

MiRNAs (microRNAs) are a group of endogenous, small noncoding RNA with the length of 18-25 nucleotides, which have recently been demonstrated to play important roles in a wide range of biological processes. In this work, we developed a simple, sensitive, specific, and inexpensive assay through the combination of enzymatic probe ligation and real-lime PCR amplification for the measurement of mature miRNAs. A couple of novel DNA probes with a stem-loop structure were implemented to reduce nonspecific ligation by at least 100-fold. The assay has several remarkable features including wide dynamic range, low total RNA input (0.02-0.2 ng), distinct anti-interference from precursor miRNAs (signal-to-noise ratio > 500), and single-base mismatch discrimination among miRNA sequences. In addition, a one-tube assay could be accomplished by designing a couple of universal probes, which makes it feasible to examine the expression of a whole family of miRNA (such as let-7) at one time. Finally, we validated the method for quantifying the expression of four mature miRNAs including miR-122, miR-1, miR-34a, and let-Ta across 10 mouse tissues, where U6 snRNA could be simultaneously examined as an endogenous control. Thus, this method revealed a great potential for miRNA quantitatian in ordinary laboratory studies and clinical diagnoses.

Abstract

Micropollutants (MPs) present in water have shown increasing threat on the ecosystem. Membrane adsorption is playing an increasingly important role on the MPs removal but the synthesis of adsorptive membrane of high capacity remains challenging. This work proposed a strategy of grafting mesoporous nanoparticles onto macroporous membranes to prepare sorbents for MPs removal. The SiO2 nanoparticles with thiol groups (SiO2-SH) was introduced onto the RC membrane surface to prepare RC-SH membrane with a hierarchical porous structure. Specific adsorptive ligands, including itaconic acid (IA) or glycidol, was then immobilized to the RC-SH membrane surface via the thio-ene and thio-epoxy chemistry towards RC-IA and RC-PG membranes. Three kinds of adsorption membranes were obtained and their physical–chemical structure and morphologies were characterized by ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM and BET. The grafted nanoparticles have been demonstrated to increase the surface area of the adsorptive membranes. The obtained adsorptive membranes, RC-SH, RC-IA, and RC-PG, show good adsorptive capacity for Hg(II) (179.0 mg/g) , Pb(II) (140.1 mg/g), and boron (2.55 mmol/g). The adsorption isotherm and kinetics fit well with Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. This work provides a universal method tethering porous nanoparticles onto the macroporous membrane surface for improved functionality capacity.

Abstract

A new donor-acceptor (D-A) molecule is designed and synthesized with a triphenylamine unit as the electron donor and two cyanovinyl groups as the electron acceptor. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has demonstrated the reversible data storage on the thin films and mechanical analysis has shown that the recording dot is due to the intermolecular charge transfer induced by electric field.

A triphenylamine-containing donor−acceptor molecule was designed and synthesized. Its thin film showed excellent bistable electronic switching behavior with a high ON/OFF current ratio. With this molecule, stable, reliable, and reversible ultrahigh density data storage was demonstrated using STM.

Abstract

The article presents an experiment that uses a triphenylamine unit as the electron donor and two cyanovinyl groups as the electron acceptor to develop an ultra-high density storage technology. Due to the good hole-transporting ability of the triphenylamine group, it is anticipated to modify the electrical conductivity of the material. The new molecule enables the researchers to develop scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)-based storage by improving the stability of the thin film.
