The fall 2023 and spring 2024 undergraduate enrollment increases, marking the first growth since the COVID-19 pandemic, show signs of a post-pandemic turnaround for higher education. However, a significant share of current undergraduates will eventually disengage from college before earning a degree or other credential. They will join tens of millions of other adult Americans who are Some College, No Credential (SCNC). The SCNC population has been consistently rising over time. Re-engaging those who stop out remains a persistent challenge and a priority for the forty states that have set ambitious postsecondary attainment goals. This report aims to provide timely insights into the SCNC population, offering state leaders and policymakers accurate data on its current status, along with tracking progress and outcome measures for SCNC students. The first section of this report describes who makes up the SCNC population and how it has changed since the last report. In this section, the authors pay particular attention to Recent Stopouts, who joined the SCNC population after being stopped out between January 2021 and July 2022. In the second section, the authors report on SCNC re-enrollment in the 2022-23 academic year as well as first-year credential earning for re-enrollees. The authors also provide new updates on continued enrollment and second-year credential earning for SCNC re-enrollees in the 2021-22 academic year, whom were first reported on last year.

Dispersion measures (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) probe the density of electrons in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along their lines-of-sight, including the average density versus distance to the source and its variations in direction. While previous study focused on low-redshift, FRBs are potentially detectable out to high redshift, where their DMs can, in principle, probe the epoch of reionization (EOR) and its patchiness. We present the first predictions from large-scale, radiation-hydrodynamical simulation of fully-coupled galaxy formation and reionization, using Cosmic Dawn (``CoDa")~II to model the density and ionization fields of the universe down to redshifts through the end of the EOR at $z_{re}\approx6.1$. Combining this with an N-body simulation CoDa~II--Dark Matter of the fully-ionized epoch from the EOR to the present, we calculate the mean and standard deviation of FRB DMs as functions of their source redshift. The mean and standard deviation of DM increase with redshift, reaching a plateau by $z(x_{HII}\lesssim0.25)\gtrsim8$, i.e. well above $z_{re}$. The mean-DM asymptote $\mathcal{DM}_{max} \approx 5900~\mathrm{pc\, cm^{-3}}$ reflects the end of the EOR and its duration. The standard deviation there is $\sigma_{DM, max}\approx497 ~\mathrm{pc\, cm^{-3}}$, reflecting inhomogeneities of both patchy reionization and density. Inhomogeneities in ionization during the EOR contribute $\mathcal{O}(1$ per cent) of this value of $\sigma_{DM,max}$ from FRBs at redshifts $z\gtrsim 8$. The oscillation modes of neutron star (NS) merger remnants, as encoded by the kHz postmerger gravitational wave (GW) signal, hold great potential for constraining the as-yet undetermined equation of state (EOS) of dense nuclear matter. Previous works have used numerical relativity simulations to derive quasi-universal relations for the key oscillation frequencies, but most of them omit the effects of a magnetic field. We conduct full general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations of NSNS mergers with two different masses and two different EOSs (SLy and ALF2) with three different initial magnetic field topologies (poloidal and toroidal only, confined to the interior, and "pulsar-like": dipolar poloidal extending from the interior to the exterior), with four different initial magnetic field strengths. We find that the magnetic braking and magnetic effective turbulent viscosity drives the merger remnants towards uniform rotation and increases their overall angular momentum loss. This causes the remnant to contract and the angular velocity of the quadrupole density oscillation to increase in such a way that it rotates faster than the fluid itself, in stark contrast with nonmagnetized simulations. As a result, the $f_2$ frequency of the dominant postmerger GW mode shifts upwards over time. The overall shift is up to ~ 200Hz for the strongest magnetic field we consider and ~ 50Hz for the median case and is therefore detectable in principle by future GW observatories, which should include the magnetic field in their analyses., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures

Recent nonmagnetized studies of binary neutron star mergers have indicated the possibility of identifying equation of state features, such as a phase transition or a quark-hadron crossover, based on the frequency shift of the main peak in the postmerger gravitational wave spectrum. By performing a series of general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic simulations we show that similar frequency shifts can be obtained due to the effect of the magnetic field. The existing degeneracy can either mask or nullify a shift due to a specific equation of state feature, and therefore the interpretation of observational data is more complicated than previously thought, requiring a more complete treatment that would necessarily include the neutron star's magnetic field., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We consider the symplectic groupoid of pairs $(B, A)$ with $A$ real unipotent upper-triangular matrix and $B\in GL_n$ being such that $\tilde A=BAB^T$ is also a unipotent upper-triangular matrix. Fock and Chekhov defined a Poisson map of Teichm\"uller space ${\mathcal T_{g,s}$ of genus $g$ surfaces with $s$ holes into the space of unipotent upper-triangular $n\times n$ matrices whose image forms the \emph{geometric locus}. The elements of geometric locus satisfy \emph{rank condition}. We describe the Hamiltonian reduction of the Poisson cluster variety of symplectic groupoid by the rank condition for $n=5$ and $6$. In both cases, we analyze the induced cluster structures on the results of Hamiltonian reduction and recover celebrated cluster structure on ${\mathcal T}_{2,1}$ for $n=5$ and ${\mathcal T}_{2,2}$ for $n=6$.

We study quantum phase transitions in a long and narrow topological Josephson junction. The low-energy excitations comprise Majorana fermions propagating along the junction, coupled to magnons in an embedded ferromagnetic layer. Based on mean-field and renormalization group arguments, we predict the existence of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in this system, both in the case of a magnetic easy-plane and easy-axis anisotropy. In the easy-axis regime, this is based on an emerging effective easy-plane, spanned by the easy-axis and the component of the magnetization which couples to the Majoranas. Stellar limb darkening must be properly accounted for to accurately determine the radii of exoplanets at various wavelengths. The standard approach to address limb darkening involves either using laws with coefficients from modelled stellar spectra or determining the coefficients empirically during light curve fitting of the data. Here, we test how accurately three common laws -- quadratic, power, and a three-parameter law -- can reproduce stellar limb darkening at different wavelengths and across a broad range of stars. We show that using a quadratic limb darkening law, which is most frequently employed by the community, leads to wavelength-dependent offsets in retrieved transmission spectra. For planets with high impact parameters ($b$ larger than about 0.5) the amplitude of these offsets can reach 1\% of the transit depth which is some cases is comparable to and can even exceed the expected signals from the planetary atmosphere. Furthermore, the quadratic law causes an offset in the value of the impact parameter when it is determined by fitting the broadband transit light curves. In contrast, using the Kipping--Sing three-parameter law leads to robust retrievals. We advocate the use of this law in retrievals, especially for transits with large impact parameters., Comment: submitted to ApJ

Besides a dense coverage of their high latitudes by starspots, rapidly rotating cool stars also display low-latitude spots in Doppler images, although generally with a lower coverage. In contrast, flux emergence models of fast-rotating stars predict strong poleward deflection of radially rising magnetic flux as the Coriolis effect dominates over buoyancy, leaving a spot-free band around the equator. To resolve this discrepancy, we consider a flux tube near the base of the convection zone in a solar-type star rotating eight times faster than the Sun, considering field intensification by weak-tube explosions. For the intensification to continue into to the buoyancy-dominated regime, the upper convection zone must have a significantly steeper temperature gradient than in the Sun, by a factor that is comparable with that found in 3D simulations of rotating convection. Within the hypothesis that stellar active regions stem from the base of the convection zone, flux emergence between 1-20 degree latitudes requires highly supercritical field strengths of up to 500 kG in rapidly rotating stars. These field strengths require explosions of 100-kG tubes within the convection zone, compatible with reasonable values of the superadiabatic temperature gradient associated with the more rapid rotation., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Evidence of chirality was observed at the Fe metal center in Fe(III) spin crossover coordination salts [Fe(qsal)2][ Ni(dmit)2] and [Fe(qsal)2](TCNQ)2 from X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Fe 2p3/2 core threshold. Recently, NIRSpec PRISM/CLEAR observations by JWST have begun providing rest-frame UV continuum measurements of galaxies at $z\gtrsim7$, revealing signatures of Ly$\alpha$ damping-wing (DW) absorption by the intergalactic medium (IGM). We develop a methodology to constrain the global ionization fraction of the IGM $(Q_{\rm HII})$ using low-resolution spectra, employing the random forest classification (RFC) method. We construct mock spectra using the simulated galaxies and the IGM from the Cosmic Dawn II simulation and train RFC models to estimate $Q_{\rm HII}$ at the redshift of the source and to detect the presence of a damped Ly$\alpha$ absorber (DLA). We find that individual galaxy spectra with spectral bins between 1220 and 1270 {\AA} and with signal-to-noise ratios greater than 20 can place tight constraints on $Q_{\rm HII}$, provided the UV continuum is accurately modeled. This method is particularly effective for the early phase of reionization ($Q_{\rm HII}<50\%$), when the IGM opacity is high in the DW. As a demonstration, we apply our model to existing NIRSpec PRISM/CLEAR spectra, placing upper bounds of $Q_{\rm HII}=59.6\%$, $5.6\%$, and $18.5\%$ at $z=7.7,~9.4,$ and $10.6$, respectively, with $68\%$ confidence, though several modeling uncertainties remain to be discussed. These constraints favor late-starting reionization models, where $\gtrsim 80\%$ of the IGM is ionized after $z=8$. We show that if a topological insulator is truncated along a curve that separates the plane in two sufficiently large regions, then the edge system admits absolutely continuous spectrum. Immunohistochemical (IHC) stains play a vital role in a pathologist's analysis of medical images, providing crucial diagnostic information for various diseases. Virtual staining from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained whole slide images (WSIs) allows the automatic production of other useful IHC stains without the expensive physical staining process. However, current virtual WSI generation methods based on tile-wise processing often suffer from inconsistencies in content, texture, and color at tile boundaries. These inconsistencies lead to artifacts that compromise image quality and potentially hinder accurate clinical assessment and diagnoses. To address this limitation, we propose a novel consistent WSI synthesis network, CC-WSI-Net, that extends GAN models to produce seamless synthetic whole slide images. Our CC-WSI-Net integrates a content- and color-consistency supervisor, ensuring consistency across tiles and facilitating the generation of seamless synthetic WSIs while ensuring Sox10 immunohistochemistry accuracy in melanocyte detection. We validate our method through extensive image-quality analyses, objective detection assessments, and a subjective survey with pathologists. By generating high-quality synthetic WSIs, our method opens doors for advanced virtual staining techniques with broader applications in research and clinical care.

We consider the renormalization of massive vector field interacting with charged scalar field in curved spacetime. Starting with the theory minimally coupled to external gravity and using the formulations with and without St\"uckelberg fields, we show that the longitudinal mode of vector field is completely decoupled and the remaining theory of transverse vector field is renormalizable by power counting. The formal arguments based on the covariance and power counting indicate that multiplicative renormalizability of the interacting theory may require introducing two non-minimal terms linear in Ricci tensor in the vector sector. Nevertheless, a more detailed analysis shows that these non-minimal terms violate the decoupling of the longitudinal mode and are prohibited. As a verification of general arguments, we derive the one-loop divergences in the minimal massive scalar QED, using St\"uckelberg procedure and the heat-kernel technique. The theory without non-minimal terms proves one-loop renormalizable and admits the renormalization group equations for all the running parameters in the scalar and vector sectors. 2-Segal spaces arise not only from $S_\dotp$-constructions associated to Waldhausen and (proto) exact categories, but also from $S_\dotp$-constructions associated to certain double-categorical structures. A major step in this direction is due to the work of Bergner--Osorno--Ozornova--Rovelli--Scheimbauer, who propose augmented stable double Segal objects as a natural input for an $S_\dotp$-construction. More recently, another such input has been put forth: ACGW categories. ACGW categories have the advantage that they are combinatorial in nature (as opposed to homotopical or algebraic), and thus have fewer difficult coherence issues to work with. The goal of this paper is to introduce the reader to the key ideas and techniques for working with ACGW categories. To do so, we focus on how homology theory generalizes to ACGW categories, particularly in the central example of finite sets. We show how the ACGW formalism can be used to produce various classical homological algebra results such as the Snake lemma and long exact sequences of relative pairs.

Benchmarks are critical for measuring progress of math reasoning abilities of Large Language Models (LLMs). However, existing widely-used benchmarks such as GSM8K have been rendered less useful as multiple cutting-edge LLMs achieve over 94% accuracy. While harder benchmarks have been proposed, their creation is often manual and expensive. We present Scheherazade, an automated approach for producing challenging mathematical reasoning benchmarks by logically chaining mathematical reasoning problems. We propose two different chaining methods, forward chaining and backward chaining, which require reasoning forward and backward through the chain respectively. We apply Scheherazade on GSM8K to create GSM8K-Scheherazade and evaluate 3 frontier LLMs and OpenAI's o1-preview on it. We show that while frontier models' performance declines precipitously at only a few questions chained, a preliminary evaluation suggests o1-preview performance persists up to 5 questions chained backwards. In addition, while all other models perform worse when problems are chained backwards, o1-preview performs better on backward-chained benchmarks. We will release the dataset and code publicly.

Quantum illumination (QI) is an entanglement-based protocol for improving lidar/radar detection of unresolved targets beyond what a classical lidar/radar of the same average transmitted energy can do. Originally proposed by Lloyd as a discrete-variable quantum lidar, it was soon shown that his proposal offered no quantum advantage over its best classical competitor. Continuous-variable, specifically Gaussian-state, QI has been shown to offer true quantum advantage, both in theory and in table-top experiments. Moreover, despite its considerable drawbacks, the microwave version of Gaussian-state QI continues to attract research attention. Recently, however, Pannu et al. (arXiv:2407.08005 [quant-ph]) have: (1) combined the entangled state from Lloyd's QI with the channel models from Gaussian-state QI; (2) proposed a new positive operator-valued measurement for that composite setup; and (3) claimed that, unlike Gaussian-state QI, their QI achieves the Nair-Gu lower bound on QI target-detection error probability at all noise brightnesses. Pannu et al.'s analysis was asymptotic, i.e., it presumed infinite-dimensional entanglement. This paper works out the finite-dimensional performance of Pannu et al.'s QI. It shows that there is a threshold value for the entangled-state dimensionality below which there is no quantum advantage, and above which the Nair-Gu bound is approached asymptotically. Moreover, with both systems operating with error-probability exponents 1 dB lower than the Nair-Gu bound's, Pannu et al.'s QI requires much higher entangled-state dimensionality than does Gaussian-state QI to achieve useful error probabilities in both high-brightness (100 photons/mode) and moderate-brightness (1 photon/mode) noise. We investigate the spatial offsets between dust and ultraviolet (UV) emission in high-redshift galaxies using the Cosmic Dawn III (CoDa III) simulation, a state-of-the-art fully coupled radiation-hydrodynamics cosmological simulation. Recent observations have revealed puzzling spatial disparities between ALMA dust continuum and UV emission as seen by HST and JWST in galaxies at z=5-7, compelling us to propose a physical interpretation of such offsets. Our simulation, which incorporates a dynamical dust model, naturally reproduces these offsets in massive, UV-bright galaxies (log$_{10}$(M$_{\rm{DM}}$/M$_{\odot}$)>11.5, M$_{\rm{AB1500}}$<-20). We find that dust-UV offsets increase with halo mass and UV brightness, reaching up to $\sim 2$ pkpc for the most massive systems, in good agreement with observational data from the ALPINE and REBELS surveys. Our analysis reveals that these offsets primarily result from severe dust extinction in galactic centers rather than a misalignment between dust and stellar mass distributions. The dust remains well-aligned with the bulk stellar component, and we predict the dust continuum should therefore align well with the stellar rest-frame NIR component, less affected by dust attenuation. This study provides crucial insights into the complex interplay between star formation, dust distribution, and observed galaxy morphologies during the epoch of reionization, highlighting the importance of dust in shaping the appearance of early galaxies at UV wavelengths., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted to A&A

Lacking terrestrial experimental data, our best constraints on the behavior of matter at high densities up to and above nuclear density arise from observations of neutron stars. Current constraints include those based on measurements of stellar masses, radii, and tidal deformabilities. Here we explore how orbits of primordial black holes - should they exist - inside neutron stars could provide complementary constraints on the nuclear equation of state (EOS). Specifically, we consider a sample of candidate EOSs, construct neutron star models for these EOSs, and compute orbits of primordial black holes inside these stars. We discuss how the pericenter advance of eccentric orbits, i.e. orbital precession, results in beat phenomena in the emitted gravitational wave signal. Observing this beat frequency could constrain the nuclear EOS and break possible degeneracies arising from other constraints, as well as provide information about the host star., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures; PRD in press

One of the remarkable differences between renormalizable quantum gravity with four-derivative action and its superrenormalizable polynomial generalizations is that the latter admit a more sophisticated particle mass spectrum. Already in the simplest superrenormalizable case, the theory has a six-derivative Lagrangian, admitting either a real or complex spectrum of masses. In the case of a real spectrum, there are the graviton, massive unphysical ghosts, and normal particles with masses exceeding the ones of the ghosts. It is also possible to have pairs of complex conjugate massive ghost-like particles. We show that in both cases, these theories do not admit a K\"all\'en-Lehmann representation and do not satisfy the positivity criterium of consistency in terms of the fields associated to those particles. In the main part of the work, using a relatively simple Euclidean scalar toy model, we show that the theory with complex spectrum forms bound states confining unphysical massive excitations into a normal composite particle. Quantum illumination (QI) is the task of querying a scene using a transmitter probe whose quantum state is entangled with a reference beam retained in ideal storage, followed by optimally detecting the target-returned light together with the stored reference, to make decisions on characteristics of targets at stand-off range, at precision that exceeds what is achievable with a classical transmitter of the same brightness and otherwise identical conditions. Using tools from perturbation theory, we show that in the limit of low transmitter brightness, high loss, and high thermal background, there is a factor of four improvement in the Chernoff exponent of the error probability in discriminating any number of apriori-known reflective targets when using a Gaussian-state entangled QI probe, over using classical coherent-state illumination (CI). While this advantage was known for detecting the presence or absence of a target, it had not been proven for the generalized task of discriminating between arbitrary target libraries. In proving our result, we derive simple general analytic expressions for the lowest-order asymptotic expansions of the quantum Chernoff exponents for QI and CI in terms of the signal brightness, loss, thermal noise, and the modal expansion coefficients of the target-reflected light's radiant exitance profiles when separated by a spatial mode sorter after entering the entrance pupil of the receiver's aperture., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, presented at ISIT 2024

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become critical for diagnosing retinal diseases as it enables 3D images of the retina and optic nerve. OCT acquisition is fast, non-invasive, affordable, and scalable. Due to its broad applicability, massive numbers of OCT images have been accumulated in routine exams, making it possible to train large-scale foundation models that can generalize to various diagnostic tasks using OCT images. Nevertheless, existing foundation models for OCT only consider 2D image slices, overlooking the rich 3D structure. Here, we present OCTCube, a 3D foundation model pre-trained on 26,605 3D OCT volumes encompassing 1.62 million 2D OCT images. OCTCube is developed based on 3D masked autoencoders and exploits FlashAttention to reduce the larger GPU memory usage caused by modeling 3D volumes. OCTCube outperforms 2D models when predicting 8 retinal diseases in both inductive and cross-dataset settings, indicating that utilizing the 3D structure in the model instead of 2D data results in significant improvement. OCTCube further shows superior performance on cross-device prediction and when predicting systemic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, further demonstrating its strong generalizability. Finally, we propose a contrastive-self-supervised-learning-based OCT-IR pre-training framework (COIP) for cross-modality analysis on OCT and infrared retinal (IR) images, where the OCT volumes are embedded using OCTCube. We demonstrate that COIP enables accurate alignment between OCT and IR en face images. Collectively, OCTCube, a 3D OCT foundation model, demonstrates significantly better performance against 2D models on 27 out of 29 tasks and comparable performance on the other two tasks, paving the way for AI-based retinal disease diagnosis.

We prove a weighted Carleman estimate for a class of one-dimensional, self-adjoint Schr\"odinger operators $P(h)$ with low regularity electric and magnetic potentials, where $h > 0$ is a semiclassical parameter. The long range part of either potential has bounded variation. The short range part of the magnetic potential belongs to $L^1(\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{R}) \cap L^2(\mathbb{R})$, while the short range part of the electric potential is a finite signed measure. The proof is a one dimensional instance of the energy method, which is used to prove Carleman estimates in higher dimensions and in more complicated geometries. The novelty of our result lies in the weak regularity assumptions on the coefficients. As a consequence of the Carleman estimate, we establish an optimal limiting absorption resolvent estimates for $P(h)$. The NANOGrav 15-year data provides compelling evidence for a stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background at nanohertz frequencies. The simplest model-independent approach to characterizing the frequency spectrum of this signal consists in a simple power-law fit involving two parameters: an amplitude A and a spectral index \gamma. In this paper, we consider the next logical step beyond this minimal spectral model, allowing for a running (i.e., logarithmic frequency dependence) of the spectral index, \gamma_run(f) = \gamma + \beta \ln(f/f_ref). We fit this running-power-law (RPL) model to the NANOGrav 15-year data and perform a Bayesian model comparison with the minimal constant-power-law (CPL) model, which results in a 95% credible interval for the parameter \beta consistent with no running, \beta \in [-0.80,2.96], and an inconclusive Bayes factor, B(RPL vs. CPL) = 0.69 +- 0.01. We thus conclude that, at present, the minimal CPL model still suffices to adequately describe the NANOGrav signal; however, future data sets may well lead to a measurement of nonzero \beta. Finally, we interpret the RPL model as a description of primordial GWs generated during cosmic inflation, which allows us to combine our results with upper limits from big-bang nucleosynthesis, the cosmic microwave background, and LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Anonymity is an important principle online. However, malicious actors have long used misleading identities to conduct fraud, spread disinformation, and carry out other deceptive schemes. With the advent of increasingly capable AI, bad actors can amplify the potential scale and effectiveness of their operations, intensifying the challenge of balancing anonymity and trustworthiness online. In this paper, we analyze the value of a new tool to address this challenge: "personhood credentials" (PHCs), digital credentials that empower users to demonstrate that they are real people -- not AIs -- to online services, without disclosing any personal information. Such credentials can be issued by a range of trusted institutions -- governments or otherwise. A PHC system, according to our definition, could be local or global, and does not need to be biometrics-based. Two trends in AI contribute to the urgency of the challenge: AI's increasing indistinguishability from people online (i.e., lifelike content and avatars, agentic activity), and AI's increasing scalability (i.e., cost-effectiveness, accessibility). Drawing on a long history of research into anonymous credentials and "proof-of-personhood" systems, personhood credentials give people a way to signal their trustworthiness on online platforms, and offer service providers new tools for reducing misuse by bad actors. In contrast, existing countermeasures to automated deception -- such as CAPTCHAs -- are inadequate against sophisticated AI, while stringent identity verification solutions are insufficiently private for many use-cases. After surveying the benefits of personhood credentials, we also examine deployment risks and design challenges. Pulsar-timing-array experiments have reported evidence for a stochastic background of nanohertz gravitational waves consistent with the signal expected from a population of supermassive--black-hole binaries. Those analyses assume power-law spectra for intrinsic pulsar noise and for the background, as well as a Hellings--Downs cross-correlation pattern among the gravitational-wave--induced residuals across pulsars. These assumptions are idealizations that may not be realized in actuality. We test them in the NANOGrav 15 yr data set using Bayesian posterior predictive checks: after fitting our fiducial model to real data, we generate a population of simulated data-set replications, and use them to assess whether the optimal-statistic significance, inter-pulsar correlations, and spectral coefficients assume extreme values for the real data when compared to the replications. We confirm that the NANOGrav 15 yr data set is consistent with power-law and Hellings--Downs assumptions. We also evaluate the evidence for the stochastic background using posterior-predictive versions of the frequentist optimal statistic and of Bayesian model comparison, and find comparable significance (3.2\ $\sigma$ and 3\ $\sigma$ respectively) to what was previously reported for the standard statistics. We conclude with novel visualizations of the reconstructed gravitational waveforms that enter the residuals for each pulsar. We study plasmonic time crystals, which constitute an extension of the dielectric-based photonic time crystals to plasmonic media. A salient feature of plasmonic time crystals is their ability to support amplification of both longitudinal and transverse modes. In particular, we show that such systems support collective resonances of longitudinal modes, independently of the wave vector $k$. These resonances originate from the interaction between the positive and negative frequency branches of the plasmonic dispersion relation of the unmodulated system, and from the divergence of the density of states near the plasma frequency $\omega_p$. The strongest resonance occurs at a modulation frequency of $\Omega = 2 \omega_p$, associated with a direct inter-band transition. Higher-order resonances are associated with related mechanisms but at lower modulation frequencies. We demonstrate these resonances for various periodic modulation profiles, and also provide a generic perturbative formula for resonance widths in the limit of weak modulation amplitude, in the absence of losses. Zonotopal algebras (external, central, and internal) of an undirected graph G introduced by Postnikov-Shapiro and Holtz-Ron, are finite-dimensional commutative graded algebras whose Hilbert series contain a wealth of combinatorial information about G. In this paper, we associate to G a new family of algebras, which we call bizonotopal, because their definition involves doubling the set of edges of G. These algebras are monomial and have intricate properties related, among other things, to the combinatorics of graphical parking functions and their polytopes. Unlike the case of usual zonotopal algebras, the Hilbert series of bizonotopal algebras are not specializations of the Tutte polynomial of G. Still, we show that in the external and central cases these Hilbert series satisfy a modified deletion-contraction relation. Deep learning still struggles with certain kinds of scientific data. Notably, pretraining data may not provide coverage of relevant distribution shifts (e.g., shifts induced via the use of different measurement instruments). We consider deep learning models trained to classify the synthesis conditions of uranium ore concentrates (UOCs) and show that model editing is particularly effective for improving generalization to distribution shifts common in this domain. Based on the rate of change of its orbital period, PSR J2043+1711 has a substantial peculiar acceleration of 3.5 $\pm$ 0.8 mm/s/yr, which deviates from the acceleration predicted by equilibrium Milky Way models at a $4\sigma$ level. The magnitude of the peculiar acceleration is too large to be explained by disequilibrium effects of the Milky Way interacting with orbiting dwarf galaxies ($\sim$1 mm/s/yr), and too small to be caused by period variations due to the pulsar being a redback. We identify and examine two plausible causes for the anomalous acceleration: a stellar flyby, and a long-period orbital companion. We identify a main-sequence star in \textit{Gaia} DR3 and Pan-STARRS DR2 with the correct mass, distance, and on-sky position to potentially explain the observed peculiar acceleration. However, the star and the pulsar system have substantially different proper motions, indicating that they are not gravitationally bound. However, it is possible that this is an unrelated star that just happens to be located near J2043+1711 along our line of sight (chance probability of 1.6\%). Therefore, we also constrain possible orbital parameters for a circumbinary companion in a hierarchical triple system with J2043+1711; the changes in the spindown rate of the pulsar are consistent with an outer object that has an orbital period of 80 kyr, a companion mass of 0.3 $M_\odot$ (indicative of a white dwarf or low-mass star), and a semi-major axis of 2000 AU. Continued timing and/or future faint optical observations of J2043+1711 may eventually allow us to differentiate between these scenarios.

Lorentzian-type media support optical phonons that oscillate with longitudinal polarization parallel to the wave direction, at a wave vector-independent frequency at which the permittivity becomes zero. Here, we study the interactions between the longitudinal optical phonons and Lorentzian medium-based dispersive photonic time crystals (PTCs). We demonstrate that a stationary charge embedded in the PTCs can excite these longitudinal modes through the conversion of the static polarization field induced by the charge. Furthermore, the PTCs can develop a momentum bandgap across the entire wave vector space to amplify the longitudinal modes. Remarkably, this infinite momentum bandgap can be established with minimal temporal modulation of the refractive index when creating the PTCs. Our approach expands the range of waves that can be manipulated in PTCs and shows potential for observing momentum bandgap phenomenon in realistic optical experiments, where the modulation depth of the refractive index is severely constrained.

The investigation into the scattering of plane waves by a periodic array of parallel cylinders utilizes the method of cylindrical wave decomposition, thereby reducing the problem complexity to a series of linear algebraic equations. This methodology proves particularly efficacious when the diameter of cylinders is significantly less than the wavelength of incident wave, resulting in a rapid diminution of the solution coefficients as a function of azimuth numbers. Such a reductionist approach facilitates the computation of scattered radiation intensity in near field. Subsequent cross-validation with numerical results corroborates the theoretical findings, showcasing a qualitative concordance between the two. High-rate, high-fidelity entanglement distribution is essential to the creation of a quantum internet, but recent achievements in fiber and satellite-based entanglement distribution fall far short of what is needed. Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. Appl. 19, 054209 (2023)] proposed a means for dramatically increasing entanglement-distribution rates via zero added-loss multiplexing (ZALM). ZALM's quantum transmitter employs a pair of Sagnac-configured spontaneous parametric downconverters (SPDCs), channelization via dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) filtering, and partial Bell-state measurements (BSMs) to realize a heralded source of frequency-multiplexed polarization-entangled biphotons. Each biphoton is transmitted to Alice and Bob with a classical message identifying its frequency channel and the heralded entangled state. Their quantum receivers use DWDM filtering and mode conversion to interface their received biphotons to intra-cavity color-center quantum memories. This paper delves deeply into ZALM's SPDCs, partial-BSMs, and loading of Alice and Bob's quantum memories. It derives the density operators for the SPDC sources and the quantum memories, allowing heralding probability, heralding efficiency, and fidelity to be evaluated for both the polarization-entangled biphotons and the loaded quantum memories, thus enabling exploration of the parameter space for optimizing ZALM performance. Even without optimization analysis, the paper already demonstrates two critical features of the ZALM architecture: the necessity of achieving a near-separable channelized biphoton wave function to ensure the biphoton sent to Alice and Bob is of high purity; and the premium placed on Alice and Bob's temporal-mode converters' enabling narrowband push-pull memory loading to ensure the arriving biphoton's state is faithfully transferred to the intra-cavity color centers., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figure, 1 table

We reexamine the well-known Duan-Kimble entanglement scheme, wherein the state of a single-photon qubit is entangled with a quantum memory consisting of a single-atom qubit in a strongly coupled optical cavity, providing the capability to load the photon's state into the memory. We correct a common error appearing in some subsequent papers regarding the validity of the single-photon reflectivity function that characterizes the essential phase shift at the heart of the protocol. Using the validated analytical solution, we introduce an improved scheme-the push-pull configuration-where the photon and cavity are tuned at the midpoint between atomic resonances and show that it can outperform the original on-off configuration in which the photon and cavity are tuned exactly to one of the atomic resonances. The performance metric used is the final memory-state fidelity versus the heralding probability, which determines the memory loading rate. The results should play a role in optimizing future quantum repeater schemes based on the Duan-Kimble protocol.

A linear differential operator $T=Q(z)\frac{d}{dz}+P(z)$ with polynomial coefficients defines a continuous family of Hutchinson operators when acting on the space of positive powers of linear forms. In this context, $T$ has a unique minimal Hutchinson-invariant set $M_{CH}^{T}$ in the complex plane. Using a geometric interpretation of its boundary in terms of envelops of certain families of rays, we subdivide this boundary into local and global arcs (the former being portions of integral curves of the rational vector field $\frac{Q(z)}{P(z)}\partial_{z}$), and singular points of different types which we classify below. The latter decomposition of the boundary of $M_{CH}^{T}$ is largely determined by its intersection with the plane algebraic curve formed by the inflection points of trajectories of the field $\frac{Q(z)}{P(z)}\partial_{z}$. We provide an upper bound for the number of local arcs in terms of degrees of $P$ and $Q$. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

We provide an alternative characterization of two-dimensional locality (necessary e.g. to define the Hall conductivity of a Fermi projection) using the spectral projections of the Laughlin flux operator. Using this abstract characterization, we define generalizations of this locality, which we term quasi-2D. We go on to calculate the path-connected components of spaces of unitaries or orthogonal projections which are quasi-2D-local and find a starkly different behavior compared with the actual 2D column of the Kitaev table, exhibiting e.g., in the unitary chiral case, infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}$-valued indices., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer treatment but can result in severe immune-related adverse events (IrAEs). Monitoring IrAEs on a large scale is essential for personalized risk profiling and assisting in treatment decisions. Methods: In this study, we conducted an analysis of clinical notes from patients who received ICIs at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. By employing a Natural Language Processing algorithmic pipeline, we systematically identified seven common or severe IrAEs. We examined the utilization of corticosteroids, treatment discontinuation rates following IrAEs, and constructed survival curves to visualize the occurrence of adverse events during treatment. Results: Our analysis encompassed 108,280 clinical notes associated with 1,635 patients who had undergone ICI therapy. The detected incidence of IrAEs was consistent with previous reports, exhibiting substantial variation across different ICIs. Treatment with corticosteroids varied depending on the specific IrAE, ranging from 17.3% for thyroiditis to 57.4% for myocarditis. Our algorithm demonstrated high accuracy in identifying IrAEs, as indicated by an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.89 for each suspected note and F1 scores of 0.87 or higher for five out of the seven IrAEs examined at the patient level. Conclusions: This study presents a novel, large-scale monitoring approach utilizing deep neural networks for IrAEs. Our method provides accurate results, enhancing understanding of detrimental consequences experienced by ICI-treated patients. Moreover, it holds potential for monitoring other medications, enabling comprehensive post-marketing surveillance to identify susceptible populations and establish personalized drug safety profiles.

As the twelfth in the Completing College series, this report updates the six-year college completion rates nationally and by state, by tracking the enrollment and completion outcomes for the fall 2017 cohort of beginning college students through June 2023. The report also features national eight-year completion outcomes for fall 2015 through June 2023. The national completion rate measures the performance of the entire higher education system. It counts all students who enter postsecondary education for the first time each fall, enrolling full-time or part-time at two-year or four-year institutions, and completing at any U.S. degree-granting institution. It includes those who complete after transfer, not just completions at the starting institution. Thus, the results more fully capture today's students' success, which increasingly involve mobility across institutions, re-entry after stop-out, and changes in enrollment intensities. A longitudinal data dashboard accompanies this report and offers detailed six-year and eight-year completion outcomes by cohort year across starting institution sectors and student backgrounds, enabling national and state-level comparisons through interactive visualizations and analysis tools.

Despite the growing body of research on how to support older readers, few studies consider whether U.S. teachers can identify students who have difficulty reading instructional materials across content areas or whether teachers feel like they have the knowledge and resources to support those students. Such information could lay the groundwork for states and school systems to provide better supports to teachers to address students' reading difficulties. In this report, researchers explore U.S. public school teachers' perceptions of students' difficulties with reading in grades 3-8, those teachers' knowledge about how students learn to read, their experiences supporting these readers, and what they need to help students become proficient readers. The findings in this report highlight the importance of including teachers in upper elementary and middle school grades in resource development and allocation and offer guidance to policymakers designing or implementing reading instruction reforms.
