Previous research has shown ongoing difficulties between Police, Fire and Rescue, and Ambulance Service responders during multi-agency emergencies. Recently, researchers have used the Social Identity Approach to gain insight into these challenges, offering a psychological framework for understanding relations within and between response organisations. This study builds upon previous work by engaging responders from the emergency services in six discussion-based exercises. By analysing participants' identity levels and their perceptions of joint working performance, we found a positive association between shared identity and interoperability. Analysis of the discussion transcripts highlighted areas where joint working faced obstacles, such as the use of organisation-specific terminology. Furthermore focus group discussions after the exercise revealed key factors linking shared identity to effective multi-agency response, including increased motivation to collaborate and increased trust and respect. This research deepens our understanding of multi-agency working from a social identity perspective, highlighting the importance of shared identity in enhancing joint efforts. Background: Proper formation of the couple's identity is an essential condition for stability of a desirable marriage. Couple identity is culture-dependent and can take many forms and have different consequences based on various factors such as the way the couples cooperate. Despite importance of this topic, research seldom has been conducted to identify couple identity patterns in Iranian culture. Aims: This study aimed to identify the couple identity patterns among women in Tehran. Methods: The current research was conducted with a qualitative approach using Glaser’s grounded theory method in Tehran (2022-2023). The sample included 16 married women in Tehran, who were selected through purposive sampling (theoretical type). The data were collected through in-depth and semi-structured interviews, and then the data were and analyzed using Glaser’s method in three steps: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Results: In the present study, four patterns of women's couple identity were identified: cooperative, self-seeking-consoling, self-sacrificing and undeveloped identity. Each of these patterns are different from each other based on the characteristics of the following five axes: manifestation of the couple's personal identity, communication space, supportive-emotional space, power sharing space, and consequences. Conclusion: The results of the study demonstrate that due to the balanced contribution of the relationship parties in the collaborative couple identity pattern, this pattern can be considered the ideal relationship pattern as compared to the other patterns. It is recommended that the findings of this study be made available to experts in the field in order that they can guide couples towards the desired marital identity and improve the quality of marital relationships through education and therapy.

Many lay people believe that the best way to develop a clear sense of 'who you are' is to shut yourself off from others and engage in introspection. Increasingly, however, empirical evidence points to the social aspects of identities and identity development. Building on this, we argue that a strong sense of personal identity is more likely to be derived from meaningful social interaction. More specifically, we argue that when communication allows people to develop a sense of shared identity, it can also promote a sense of personal self. Consistent with this hypothesis, evidence from three experiments indicates that social interaction indirectly enhances people's self‐concept clarity and personal identity strength, through an increased experience of shared identity and social validation. After the emancipation, the African-Americans come to recognize the necessity of rebuilding their identity and redefining their blackness. This recognition is seemingly motivated by their post-civil war need to demolish the negative stereotypes long established and believed about them, change the American cultural context and enhance their living conditions. Taking into consideration its performative role and discursive nature, the African-American writers arrive to make an exceptional use of collective memory and its genuine narratives in order to recast their unique identity. As it has formerly been noticed, the process of collective remembering follows three major steps that are: construction, reconstruction and deconstruction. No doubt, these techniques have helped to condemn the lingering racist practices and their destructive outcomes, provide a more accurate conception of blackness and ultimately transcend the earlier established blacks' image into another one which is strong, innovative and full of possibilities. This study explores a shared identity framework for inclusive ethnic relationships under Ethiopian federalism. Decades of the federal experiment show mixed results. On the one hand, it enabled nationalities to exercise extensive rights and freedoms. On the other hand, however, it coincided with pervasive conflicts and state fragility. Contrary to the view that ethnic federalism is fundamentally flawed, this study argues that the problems are epiphenomenons that can be improved. Using an exploratory research approach, the study has taken the Konso‐Derashe‐Alle area to show how shared identity helps to resolve the contradiction in Ethiopian federalism. According to the findings, maturing ethnicity and existing political consciousness suggest ethnic federalism as a viable system for the study area but it should be supplemented by a framework of shared spaces such as the shared society system that capitalizes on the extensive shared sociocultural values of the area to overturn the growing exclusive ethnicity. This is a qualitative investigation that seeks to strengthen community identity by designing symbols that can embody the spirit and identity of the artisan community in Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand. Through heritage design and the explicit promotion of a shared design identity, the study contributes to the broader understanding of the social sources and social effects of design. The researchers used a participatory action research model, with data collection conducted in two phases: documentary review on cultural capital and craftsmanship, and developing products through co-created designs with artisans from four purposively selected local communities. Twelve customs and rituals linked to the traditional Thai lunar calendar were identified and incorporated into design elements, developing local products, and strengthening the shared identity in the artisan communities of Nakhon Pathom. Local stakeholders identified an alternative theme for product designs, emphasizing the importance of local participation in research projects of this nature to ensure that stakeholders retain ownership over their creations and that culturally inappropriate choices are not made by visiting researchers. An online brand community is a network of people who are interested in and loyal to a brand that comes together. The aim of the current research was to identify the dimensions of social capital in online brand communities with an emphasis on customer-based brand equity in Iraqi telecommunication companies. The research was of a qualitative nature and was carried out using the technique of theme analysis. Twenty-five experts in the fields of e-marketing and social marketing, with an emphasis on social networks and the telecommunications sector, were selected by the targeted non-probability sampling method. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were completed when the criterion of theoretical saturation was reached. The data were analyzed with the five-stage model of Castleberry and Nolen (2018). According to the results, 45 final codes appeared, which were categorized into two categories: functional characteristics of the online brand community and social capital of it. The functional features included information functions, facilitating members' activism, facilitating brand affairs, and creating enjoyable experiences. The social capital of the online brand community also included five components of intra-community interactions: trust, common identity, value, and showing the human aspect of the brand. According to the findings, functional characteristics and social capital have a two-way relationship that can develop. Online brand communities can boost brand image and customer satisfaction. Systems, including humans and artificial agents, are involved in a set of coordinated tasks. The technology becomes intertwined with an individual's identity in daily life. The concept explored here encapsulates the extended-self idea within social identity theory. In this comprehensive review, the idea of shared identity of individuals interacting with AI systems is explored, along with methods, applications, and implications. Assuming that the transition to AI-enhanced society happens ubiquitously, in different categories (e.g., data analysis, text comprehension), realizing shared identity with AI systems is an important step in societal development. Because identity consists of personal and social experience, the social experience is reflected in global environment, and it in turn extends to the artificial environment. AI systems act as part of an individual's extended identity, allowing them to navigate digital spaces, share personal information, and interact with various services. The main advantage of shared identity with AI systems is in coordination improvement and task efficiency: people are better at managing tasks when a common identity is highlighted; the same might be assumed for the interaction of a human and AI systems. The application of such ideas is discussed within personal, social and global identities including a social norm, personification, bias identification, recommender system, social network, ethical considerations, cybersecurity, medical use, and developing a sense of global identity and propose ideas for refining AI Global policy. Previous research has shown that disasters often involve a sense of injustice among affected communities. But the empowerment process through which ‘disaster communities’ organise strategically to confront such injustices have not been investigated by social psychology. This study addresses this gap by examining how community members impacted by the Grenfell Tower fire self-organized to demand justice in response to government neglect. Thematic analysis of interviews with fifteen campaigners helped us to understand the strategies of those involved in support campaigns following the fire. Campaigners aimed to: overcome injustice against the government inactions in the aftermath of the fire; empower their community against government neglect; create a sense of community for people who experienced injustice. Community members created a petition calling on the government to build trust in the public inquiry; they achieved their goals with the participation of people from wider communities. We found that reaching out to allies from different communities and building shared social identity among supporters were two main ways to achieve campaign goals. The study suggests ways that empowerment and hence organizing for justice can be achieved after a disaster if campaigners adopt strategies for empowering collective action.

The comprehensive analysis of social identity cannot simply focus on individuals' cognitive self‐definition. Rather it should also theorize the social conditions that affect individuals' opportunities to act in terms of those self‐definitions. We argue that the social distancing interventions associated with Covid‐19 provide an opportunity to explore the significance of otherwise taken‐for‐granted social factors which routinely support and sustain individuals' identity enactments. Using qualitative data gathered with 20 members of the Scottish Muslim community (19 diary entries and 20 post‐diary interviews), we explore their experiences of restricted access to community‐relevant social spaces (e.g., mosques and prayer rooms). Our analysis shows that while these regulations could result in new opportunities for Muslims' religious identity enactments, they also impeded their abilities to act in terms of their religious identification. Addressing such impediments, we develop our understanding of the contextual factors that shape individuals' abilities to enact identity‐defining norms and values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Games of pure mutual interest require players to coordinate their choices without being able to communicate. One way to achieve this is through team-reasoning, asking ‘what should we choose’, rather than just assessing one’s own options from an individual perspective. It has been suggested that team-reasoning is more likely when individuals are encouraged to think of those they are attempting to coordinate with as members of an in-group. In two studies, we examined the effects of group identity, measured by the ‘Inclusion of Other in Self’ (IOS) scale, on performance in nondescript coordination games, where there are several equilibria but no descriptions that a player can use to distinguish any one strategy from the others apart from the payoff from coordinating on it. In an online experiment, our manipulation of group identity did not have the expected effect, but we found a correlation of .18 between IOS and team-reasoning-consistent choosing. Similarly, in self-reported strategies, those who reported trying to pick an option that stood out (making it easier to coordinate on) also reported higher IOS scores than did those who said they tended to choose the option with the largest potential payoff. In a follow-up study in the lab, participants played either with friends or with strangers. Experiment 2 replicated the relationship between IOS and team-reasoning in strangers but not in friends. Instead, friends’ behavior was related to their expectations of what their partners would do. A hierarchical cluster analysis showed that 46.4% of strangers played a team reasoning strategy, compared to 20.6% of friends. We suggest that the strangers who group identify may have been team reasoning but friends may have tried to use their superior knowledge of their partners to try to predict their strategy.

This article provides a constructive critique on the disapproval-respect model of tolerance, which presents a dual-categorization-based explanation of tolerance with two components--disapproval and respect. Additionally, the article discusses the leniency contract theory, another dual-categorization-based theory of tolerance with two components--disagreement and openmindedness--that has been largely overlooked by the tolerance research community. Both theories argue that tolerance arises from a sense of shared identity; however, they have distinct focuses in their conceptualization and consequences of tolerance. While the disapproval-respect model focuses on respect tolerance and its consequence in intergroup relations, the leniency contract theory focuses on open-minded tolerance, its consequence in minority versus majority influence, and the role of tolerance in enabling gradual and steady change toward a more pluralistic society. The leniency contract theory and disapproval-respect model together offer valuable insights into the ways in which group cohesion and diversity can coexist, even in the face of ideological disagreement. Liberal democracy is a complex theoretical and ideological response to the historical evolution of the North Atlantic center. (Liberal) democracy is a limited (conditional) political system that needs certain conditions to function stably and effectively: economic prosperity, cultural legitimation and social cohesion. Social cohesion in a society, necessary to legitimize the democratic system, cannot be obtained without an integrative culture that determines a shared identity. Multicultural societies or supranational organizations such as the EU have difficulties in maintaining or creating a functioning democratic system due to the weakening or inability to create integrative culture, a shared identity and, consequently, an appropriate level of social cohesion necessary for the functioning of democracy. Refugees often have little control over the circumstances of migration, including their destination country. Receiving-society residents may thus perceive that refugees have relatively low interest in the host culture, resulting in skepticism towards refugee integration. In five studies conducted with German residents (total N = 866), we examined ways to overcome such perceptions via a vignette-based manipulation of a refugee's ostensible openness and social identity. Overall, participants with a more right-wing political orientation exhibited more positive attitudes toward refugee integration and greater willingness to help after reading about a (female) refugee who was (vs. was not) open to experience and who shared (vs. did not share) a key aspect of their identity, namely being a student (Studies 1 and 2a) or fan of the same soccer club (Study 4). For a male refugee, these effects did not emerge (Study 2b). In Study 3, non-student participants reported less willingness to help when a student (vs. non-student) refugee was open (vs. not open) to experience. For desire for integration and willingness to help, meta-analytic syntheses revealed robust effect sizes for the three-way interaction between openness, shared identity, and political orientation. Thus, residents’ attitudes toward refugee integration and helping intentions were shaped by refugees’ perceived personality (openness), residents’ political orientation, and by residents’ and refugees’ shared identity.

Against of what mainstream society believes, Roma women are participating in public spaces of debate and decision-making and taking the lead in opening educational and labor opportunities for themselves, their families and their communities. The specific traits of the type of leadership developed and exercised by Roma women in civic organizations, as something that differs from both the type of leadership done by Roma men, or non-Roma women, is yet scantily researched by academic literature. Aimed at filling this gap, this article presents and discusses what we have identified as dialogic traits in Roma women leadership when engaged in social and political actions. We call these traits “dialogic”, as all of them are constructed and emerged based on egalitarian and intersubjective dialogue among Roma women themselves, and their communities. These traits are, leadership assumed in a relational way, as a collective responsibility and developed with others; putting the Roma values and shared identity at the core; and with a strong understanding of the need of intergenerational solidarity among themselves as a motor of organized action. Findings are drawn from qualitative interviews conducted with Roma women of diverse ages, and Spanish regions, who are all of them leaders engaged across diverse organized spaces of civic participation, namely Roma women civic organizations, or other types of political institutions.

Mothers' social integration with other mothers in the same residential area has been shown to be beneficial for their health and well‐being. The socio‐psychological resources afforded by other mothers aid the transition to motherhood. However, much less is known about the processes whereby mothers integrate with other local mothers. Therefore, we analysed first‐time mothers' experiences of social integration with other mothers in the same neighbourhood. Through three waves of semi‐structured interviews, we followed eight Finnish first‐time mothers' everyday lives for a year. The narrative analysis of these longitudinal interviews revealed three story types – social integration, social exclusion and social disconnection – that depicted mothers' different experiences of integration with other local mothers. The perceived similarity of experiences, goals and interests related to motherhood enhanced the development of a shared sense of identity and supported integration with other local mothers. In this paper we present three studies that address the difference between physical and psychological groups, the conditions that create a transformation from the one into the other, and the psychological processes underlying this transformation. In Study 1 we demonstrate correlations between shared social identity, desired physical proximity to others, and positive emotions in the company of others. Study 2, employing a between-subjects design, finds that an event that creates shared fate, such as the breakdown of a train, leads to greater comfort in social interactions (e.g., ease of conversation) and comfort in sensual interactions (e.g., tolerance of physical touch) with other passengers, and that this occurs through an increase in shared social identity but not through social identification. Study 3 obtains similar findings using a within-subjects design. In combination, these studies provide consistent evidence for the role of shared social identity in the emergence of psychological groups from physical groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decision making often entails conflict. In many situations, the symptoms of such decisional conflict are conspicuous. This article explores an important and unexamined question: How does observing someone else experiencing decisional conflict impact our own preferences? The authors show that observing others' emotional conflict and agony over an impending decision makes the observer's preferences converge to those of the conflicted actor (i.e., choose similarly). Thus this article contributes to the social influence literature by demonstrating that observers' preferences are not only influenced by an actor's ultimate choice, but also by the process leading to this choice. For example, in one experiment, participants' real monetary donations to one of two charities converged to those of a paid confederate who agonized over the decision. Six studies demonstrate this effect and show that it is triggered by empathy and a greater sense of shared identity with the conflicted actor. Accordingly, the studies show the effect is more pronounced for individuals with a greater tendency to empathize with others, and that convergence occurs only if participants deem the actor's conflict warranted given the decision at hand. This article examines my experiences as a Latina DACA-benefited researcher conducting qualitative research with Latinx DACA-benefited college students. Drawing from an interview study across two states, I describe my actions and responses to three stages I experienced in the field: reflexive analysis of positionality, acknowledgement of shared identity, and coming out to participants. In discussing my experiences during interviews, I showcase instances in which I pushed boundaries to adopt a methodology of compassion and humanity necessary in research by, for, and with undocumented immigrants. I draw from W.E.B. Du Bois's double consciousness to consider undocumented researchers' compartmentalized identities and experiences in the field, and I use Gloria Anzaldúa's mestiza consciousness to contest dichotomies around legal status, nationality, and belonging. I propose the adoption of flexible methodologies to disrupt existing rigidities in qualitative research in immigrant communities and static epistemologies produced in contexts where researchers hold legal privilege over their undocumented/liminally documented participants. The large number of incoming refugees represents a challenge for host societies and its citizens triggering reactions from a supportive welcome to brusque rejection and hostile behavior toward refugees. In a pre-registered study, we investigated factors that could promote altruistic behavior in fully incentivized one-shot Dictator Game toward various receiver groups including refugees. We find that host citizens behave more altruistically toward refugees and other receiver groups if they (a) share a local identity with them (i.e., live in the same city), and (b) perceive them to be close (to the self) and warm-hearted. Moreover, citizens that are (c) generally more prosocial and hold a more left-wing political orientation are more willing to give. Unexpectedly, from a theoretical point of view, altruistic giving toward refugees was not influenced in the predicted direction by a shared student identity, competition and perceived income differences (although the latter effect was significant when considering all receiver groups). For shared student identity we even observe a reduction of altruistic behavior, while the opposite effect was predicted. We discuss implications for public policies for successful refugee helping and integration.

This research examines shared identity in the context of online training. Specifically, we examine the impact of perceived shared identity on social distance, operationalized as one's willingness to work with another person and their willingness to recommend that person for a job. We conduct two studies of simulated online training and find that increased shared identity plays an important role in the online training process and that perceptions of trustworthiness mediate the relationship between shared identity and social distance. Much research addresses the proposition that identifying with a group shapes individuals' behaviour. Typically, such research employs experimental or survey methods, measuring or manipulating social identification and relating this to various outcome variables. Although shedding much light on the processes involved in the identity–behaviour relationship, such research tends to overlook the various constraints that limit individuals' abilities to act in accordance with their identities. Using interview data gathered in north India, we explore the factors affecting the enactment of a religious identity. More specifically, using data gathered at a religious mass gathering, we compare and contrast participants' reports of identity enactment when they are at the event and when they are in their home villages. These two contexts differ in terms of their social organization, especially the degree to which they are marked by the presence of a shared identity. In Ireland, ritual events and parades have been a central part of civic and public life. However, there is limited understanding of the identity processes at work at these collective events. The present research aims to examine how participants attending collective events come to recognise shared social identification and the impact that this awareness is reported to have on intragroup processes. Interview data were collected over the course of two years at the St Patrick's Day parade and 1916 Easter Rising commemorations in Dublin and Belfast with both participants and attendees at the events. Thematic analysis revealed that to the extent that individuals saw the event as an identity event, they used attendance as their primary indication of shared identity, along with visual identity markers, shared experiences, and shared affects. Participants' accounts of the experience of shared identity focused upon a range of cognitive, affective, and social variables which together suggested a relational transformation in the crowd. Mimicry-based emotion contagion and social appraisal currently provide the most popular explanations for interpersonal emotional convergence. However, neither process fully accounts for intragroup effects involving dynamic calibration of people's orientations during communal activities. When group members are engaged in shared tasks, they simultaneously attend to the same unfolding events and arrive at mutually entrained movement patterns that facilitate emotional coordination. Entrainment may be further cultivated by interaction rituals involving rhythmic music that sets the pace for collective singing, dancing, or marching. These rituals also provide an emotionally meaningful focus for group activities and sometimes specifically encourage the experience of intense embodied states. Intragroup emotion convergence thus depends on interlocking processes of reciprocated and context-attuned orientational calibration and group-based social appraisal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the impact of shared identity and agency trust, governmental vs. third party, on Finnish citizens' intention to vote online. Using the integrated model of shared identity and trust as a theoretical lens, a within-subject quasi-experiment was conducted to understand the impact of agency trust on intention to vote online. The model was tested using data from 248 Finnish citizens using PLS-SEM. We found that citizens' perceptions of shared identity with online voting agencies significantly contribute to agency trust. This trust in agencies, then directly and indirectly through perceived usefulness, affects online voting intention. Perceived usefulness directly and perceived ease of use indirectly increase the intention to vote online. However, the perceived usefulness of online voting is contingent upon the voting administering agency being the government. This study contributes to the understanding of agency trust in online voting adoption in the Finnish context and highlights the role of shared identity in building citizen trust in online voting.
