Many studies have examined the relationships between the effects of the sunspot area and growth of trees; however, none of them considered European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). We investigated the relationships between the sunspot area, climate factors (temperature and precipitation) and radial growth of beech in the Krkonoše Mts. in the Czech Republic. We used the core samples of 199 beech trees representing the century-long growth, two sets of climate data (local short-term data and general long-term climate data), and more than a century-long sunspot area dataset acquired from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Our results showed the significant effects of the sunspot area, temperature and precipitation on the radial growth of beech. The correlations between sunspot area and tree-ring width index varied from 0.9 to 0.5 in the period between 1986 and 2017, a period during which none of the significant anthropogenic disturbances occurred in the study area. The strong correlations were found between the sunspot area and climate factors for a longer period. The largest effect of the sunspot area on the radial growth was observed in the previous year, especially in growing season. Structurally diversified (heterogeneous) beech stands were less affected by the sunspot area compared to the homogeneous stands. In conclusion, the sunspot area is one of the important factors that significantly influence the radial growth of beech in the Krkonoše Mts. Our results will be useful for understanding beech forests in the context of global change, and will have an important contribution to the knowledge for predicting potential impact of the sunspot area on the Earth's surface. Height to crown base (HCB) of a tree is an important variable often included as a predictor in various forest models that serve as the fundamental tools for decision-making in forestry. We developed spatially explicit and spatially inexplicit mixed-effects HCB models using measurements from a total 19,404 trees of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) on the permanent sample plots that are located across the Czech Republic. Variables describing site quality, stand density or competition, and species mixing effects were included into the HCB model with use of dominant height (HDOM), basal area of trees larger in diameters than a subject tree (BAL- spatially inexplicit measure) or Hegyi’s competition index (HCI—spatially explicit measure), and basal area proportion of a species of interest (BAPOR), respectively. The parameters describing sample plot-level random effects were included into the HCB model by applying the mixed-effects modelling approach. Among several functional forms evaluated, the logistic function was found most suited to our data. The HCB model for Norway spruce was tested against the data originated from different inventory designs, but model for European beech was tested using partitioned dataset (a part of the main dataset). The variance heteroscedasticity in the residuals was substantially reduced through inclusion of a power variance function into the HCB model. The results showed that spatially explicit model described significantly a larger part of the HCB variations [R2adj = 0.86 (spruce), 0.85 (beech)] than its spatially inexplicit counterpart [R2adj = 0.84 (spruce), 0.83 (beech)]. The HCB increased with increasing competitive interactions described by tree-centered competition measure: BAL or HCI, and species mixing effects described by BAPOR. A test of the mixed-effects HCB model with the random effects estimated using at least four trees per sample plot in the validation data confirmed that the model was precise enough for the prediction of HCB for a range of site quality, tree size, stand density, and stand structure. We therefore recommend measuring of HCB on four randomly selected trees of a species of interest on each sample plot for localizing the mixed-effects model and predicting HCB of the remaining trees on the plot. We developed individual tree height growth models for Norway spruce (Picea abies(L.) Karst.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestrisL.) in Norway based on national forest inventory data. Potential height growth is based on existing dominant height growth models and reduced due to competition by functions developed in this study. Three spatially explicit and two spatially non-explicit competition indices were tested. Distance effects and diameter ratio effects were estimated from the data simultaneously with parameters of the potential modifier functions. Large height measurement errors in the national forest inventory data caused large residual variation of the models. However, the effects of competition on height growth were significant and plausible. The potential modifier functions show that height growth of dominant trees is largely unaffected by competition. Only at higher levels of competition, height growth is reduced as a consequence of competition. However, Scots pine also reduced height growth at very low levels of competition. Distance effects in the spatially explicit competition indices indicated that the closest neighbors are most important for height growth. However, for Scots pine also competitors at larger distance affected height growth. The five competition indices tested in this study explained similar proportions of the variation in relative height growth. Given that unbiased predictions can only be expected for the same plot size, we recommend a spatially explicit index, which describes the distance function with a negative exponential, for use in growth simulators. Abstract: Allometric bark biomass models for Cinnamomum tamala (one of the important commercial non-timber forest product tree species) have been developed using bark biomass and tree dimension data with thirty destructively sampled trees from the natural population in the mid-hill of Nepal. Diameter at breast height (D) alone and both D and total height (H) as independent variables and bark biomass (W) as dependent variable were used for modelling. The models were evaluated on the basis of numerical fit statistics, graphical appearance and biological logic. Among eighteen different models tested, the model of the form: W = DH/(b 1 + b 2 DH) accounted for the largest proportion of bark biomass variations ( = 0.92; RMSE = 3.67 kg) for individual C. tamala tree, and showed relatively better graphical appearance and biological logic. Reliability of the model would be higher when it is applied to various sizes of C. tamala trees growing in the site and stand conditions similar to the basis of this study. Further work on re-calibration and validation of proposed model with data from a larger geographic area, wider range of tree sizes, site and stand conditions is recommended. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cross-saturation NMR studies have shown that the dipeptide aldehyde N-trifluoroacetyl-L-alanyl-L-phenylalaninal forms a hemiacetal complex with α-chymotrypsin. The free aldehyde resonance was seen to broaden upon addition of α-chymotrypsin and a detailed analysis has identified the enzyme-bound hemiacetal as the species which was in slow exchange with the free aldehyde and so gave rise to the perturbation. The line broadening was found to be dependent on p²H and this behaviour could be adequately described by the ionisation of a single group on the free enzyme (pKa²H 7.9) with the alkaline form being required for hemiacetal formation. The pH dependence of α-chymotrypsin-induced catalysis around neutral pH correlates welt with the observed p²H dependence of hemiacetal formation, indicating that it is an intermediate in the catalytic mechanism. Many hot issues can be investigated in desert ecosystems, including the relationship between species distribution and environmental gradients (e.g., elevation, slope, topographic convergence index, and solar insolation). Species Distribution Models (SDMs) can be used to understand these relationships. We used data acquired from the important desert plant Nitraria tangutorum Bobr. communities and desert topographic factors extracted from LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data of one square kilometer in the inner Mongolia region of China to develop SDMs. We evaluated the performance of SDMs developed with a variety of both the parametric and nonparametric algorithms (Bioclimatic Modelling (BIOCLIM), Domain, Mahalanobi, Generalized Linear Model, Generalized Additive Model, Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate these algorithms. The SDMs developed with RF showed the best performance based on the area under curve (0.7733). We also produced the Nitraria tangutorum Bobr. distribution maps with the best SDM and suitable habitat area of the Domain model. Based on the suitability map, we conclude that Nitraria tangutorum Bobr. is more suited to southern part with 0–20 degree slopes at an elevation of approximately 1010 m. This is the first attempt of modelling the effects of topographic heterogeneity on the desert species distribution on a small scale. The presented SDMs can have important applications for predicting species distribution and will be useful for preparing conservation and management strategies for desert ecosystems on a small scale. Research on the inversion of forest aboveground biomass based on airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data focuses on finding the relationship between the two, such as established linear or nonlinear models. However, these models may have poorer estimation accuracy for tree-components biomass and cannot guarantee the additivity of each component. Therefore, we aimed to develop an error-in-variable biomass model system that ensures both the compatibility of the individual tree component biomass with the diameter at breast height and the additivity of component biomass. The system we developed used the airborne LiDAR data and field-measured data of principis-rupprechtii (Larix gmelinii var.) trees, collected from north China. Our model system not only ensured the additivity of nonlinear biomass models, it also accounted for the impact of measurement errors. We first selected the airborne LiDAR-derived variable with the highest contribution to the biomass of each component and then developed an inversion model system with that variable as an independent variable and with the biomass of each component as the dependent variable using allometric functions. Moreover, two model estimation methods, two-stage error (TSEM) and nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (NSUR) with one-step, two-step, and summation methods, were also applied, and their performances were compared. The results showed that both NSUR-one-step and TSEM-one-step led to similar parameter estimates and performance for a system, and the fitting accuracy of a model system was not very attractive. The variance function included in a model system reduced the heteroscedasticity effectively and improved the model accuracy. Overall, this study successfully combined the error-in-variable modeling with the airborne LiDAR data, proposed methods that can be used for the extension of component biomass from an individual tree to a stand and that might improve the estimation accuracy of carbon storage. Aboveground biomass (AGB) of shrub communities in the desert is a basic quantitative characteristic of the desert ecosystem and an important index to measure ecosystem productivity and monitor desertification. An accurate and efficient method of predicting the AGB of a shrub community is essential for studying the spatial patterns and ecological functions of the desert region. Even though there are several entries in the literature on the AGB prediction of desert shrub communities using remote sensing data, the applicability and accuracy of airborne LiDAR data and prediction methods have not been well studied. We first extracted the elevation, density and intensity variables based on the airborne LiDAR, and then sample plot-level AGB prediction models were constructed using the parametric regression (nonlinear regression) and nonparametric methods (Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, Gradient Boosting Machine, and Multivariate adaptive regression splines). We evaluated accuracies of all the AGB prediction models we developed based on the fit statistics. Results showed that: (1) the elevation, density and intensity variables obtained from LiDAR point cloud data effectively predicted the AGB of the desert shrub community at a sample plot level, (2) the kappa coefficient of nonlinear mixed-effects (NLME) model obtained was 0.6977 with an improvement by 13% due to the random effects included into the model, and (3) the nonparametric model, such as Support Vector Machine showed the best fit statistics (R2 = 0.8992), which is 28% higher than the NLME-model, and effectively reduced the heteroscedasticity. The AGB prediction model presented in this paper, which is based on the airborne LiDAR data and machine learning algorithm, will provide a valuable tool to the managers and researchers for evaluating desert ecosystem productivity and monitoring desertification. This paper presents an investigation of terahertz (THz) wave generation by optical rectification of a Gaussian laser pulse propagating in plasma having periodic density perturbation in the presence of an externally applied static magnetic field in the axial direction. The nonuniform intensity of laser pulse leads to the generation of quasi-static ponderomotive force. The electrons acquire nonlinear oscillatory velocity under the influence of the force. This velocity, on coupling with the density perturbation, induces a nonlinear current density in the radial direction. This nonlinear current density drives a wave, the frequency of which depends on the pulse duration of the laser. The frequency falls in the THz range if the pulse duration of the laser is chosen thoughtfully. For the resonant excitation of the radiation, phase matching is required, which is provided by the periodic density perturbation. Axially applied external magnetic field can be utilized as a controlling parameter to enhance the nonlinear coupling and the yield of the generated wave. The effect of the axial magnetic field on the generated THz intensity is investigated. Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important indicator of ecosystem changes. Both satellite remote sensing and ground measurements are common methods for estimating FVC. However, desert vegetation grows sparsely and scantly and spreads widely in desert regions, making it challenging to accurately estimate its vegetation cover using satellite data. In this study, we used RGB images from two periods: images from 2006 captured with a small, light manned aircraft with a resolution of 0.1 m and images from 2019 captured with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a resolution of 0.02 m. Three pixel-based machine learning algorithms, namely gradient enhancement decision tree (GBDT), k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest (RF), were used to classify the main vegetation (woody and grass species) and calculate the coverage. An independent data set was used to evaluate the accuracy of the algorithms. Overall accuracies of GBDT, KNN and RF for 2006 image classification were 0.9140, 0.9190 and 0.9478, respectively, with RF achieving the best classification results. Overall accuracies of GBDT, KNN and RF for 2019 images were 0.8466, 0.8627 and 0.8569, respectively, with the KNN algorithm achieving the best results for vegetation cover classification. The vegetation coverage in the study area changed significantly from 2006 to 2019, with an increase in grass coverage from 15.47 ± 1.49% to 27.90 ± 2.79%. The results show that RGB images are suitable for mapping FVC. Determining the best spatial resolution for different vegetation features may make estimation of desert vegetation coverage more accurate. Terahertz (THz) generation by an intense femtosecond Gaussian laser pulse (Gaussian in space and time) in rippled density plasma has been investigated in the relativistic regime. A component of ponderomotive force is exerted on electrons due to the variation in intensity in the direction transverse to the laser propagation that results in a transient current driving a radiation. If the pulsewidth of the laser is suitably chosen, the frequency of this generated radiation falls in the THz region. The necessary condition for phase matching is provided by the density ripple. The effects of transient focusing of the laser pulse on the generated THz amplitude have also been studied. The survival rate of seedlings is a decisive factor of afforestation assessment. Generally, ground checking is more accurate than any other methods. However, the survival rate of seedlings can be higher in the growing season, and this can be estimated in a larger area at a relatively lower cost by extracting the tree crown from the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images, which provides an opportunity for monitoring afforestation in an extensive area. At present, studies on extracting individual tree crowns under the complex ground vegetation conditions are limited. Based on the afforestation images obtained by airborne consumer-grade cameras in central China, this study proposes a method of extracting and fusing multiple radii morphological features to obtain the potential crown. A random forest (RF) was used to identify the regions extracted from the images, and then the recognized crown regions were fused selectively according to the distance. A low-cost individual crown recognition framework was constructed for rapid checking of planted trees. The method was tested in two afforestation areas of 5950 m2 and 5840 m2, with a population of 2418 trees (Koelreuteria) in total. Due to the complex terrain of the sample plot, high weed coverage, the crown width of trees, and spacing of saplings vary greatly, which increases both the difficulty and complexity of crown extraction. Nevertheless, recall and F-score of the proposed method reached 93.29%, 91.22%, and 92.24% precisions, respectively, and 2212 trees were correctly recognized and located. The results show that the proposed method is robust to the change of brightness and to splitting up of a multi-directional tree crown, and is an automatic solution for afforestation verification. Desert vegetation is an important part of arid and semi-arid areas, which plays an important role in preventing wind and fixing sand, conserving water and soil, maintaining the balanced ecosystem. Therefore, mapping the vegetation accurately is necessary to conserve rare desert plants in the fragile ecosystems that are easily damaged and slow to recover. In mapping desert vegetation, there are some weaknesses by using traditional digital classification algorithms from high resolution data. The traditional approach is to use spectral features alone, without spatial information. With the rapid development of drones, cost-effective visible light data is easily available, and the data would be non-spectral but with spatial information. In this study, a method of mapping the desert rare vegetation was developed based on the pixel classifiers and use of Random Forest (RF) algorithm with the feature of VDVI and texture. The results indicated the accuracy of mapping the desert rare vegetation were different with different methods and the accuracy of the method proposed was higher than the traditional method. The most commonly used decision rule in the traditional method, named Maximum Likelihood classifier, produced overall accuracy (76.69%). The inclusion of texture and VDVI features with RGB (Red Green Blue) data could increase the separability, thus improved the precision. The overall accuracy could be up to 84.19%, and the Kappa index with 79.96%. From the perspective of features, VDVI is less important than texture features. The texture features appeared more important than spectral features in desert vegetation mapping. The RF method with the RGB+VDVI+TEXTURE would be better method for desert vegetation mapping compared with the common method. This study is the first attempt of classifying the desert vegetation based on the RGB data, which will help to inform management and conservation of Ulan Buh desert vegetation. The Himalayas have been experiencing a higher rate of temperature increase than the global average. How such climate warming and changes in the precipitation regime may affect the growth responses of individual tree species is little known but is required so that adequate projections of future distributions and management plans can be formulated. This study was carried out to investigate the influence of intra- and interannual climate variability on the radial growth of Pinus wallichiana, a conifer species that typically colonises glacier forelands and screes. Tree core samples collected for chronology development that spanned over a 119-year-long (1899–2017) period and the relationship of ring width with climatic data was analysed using correlation analysis. Radial growth in P. wallichiana was negatively correlated with mean temperature in March and over the pre-monsoon (March – May) seasonal average and it was positively correlated with monthly precipitation in March and September. Monthly standardised precipitation index (SPI) values indicated that overall the growth of P. wallichiana was mainly controlled by precipitation availability during the pre-monsoon season, particularly in March. Moisture availability especially in spring is crucial for the radial growth of P. wallichiana. However, how this response varies throughout the elevational range of the species deserves further study to be able to make projections on the likely range expansion or contraction of the species in response to ongoing climate change. The 17 amino acid peptide nociceptin has been implicated in pain modulation in the central nervous system. The effects of bath applied nociceptin, and some analogues of nociceptin, upon spontaneous lumbar dorsal root activity have been investigated in an isolated preparation of rat spinal cord. Nociceptin was found to reversibly depress spontaneous dorsal root activity at concentrations of 1.0 μM and 10.0 μM (IC50 2.0 μM), whereas acetyl-nociceptin at concentrations up to 10 μM had no detectable effect. Omission of the last four amino acids (nociceptin 1–13), increased the potency of the effect upon dorsal root activity by approximately 100-fold (IC50 30 nM), but activity was lost when only the first seven amino acids of the nociceptin molecule (nociceptin 1–7) were tested. Accurate estimate of tree biomass is essential for forest management. In recent years, several climate-sensitive allometric biomass models with diameter at breast height (D) as a predictor have been proposed for various tree species and climate zones to estimate tree aboveground biomass (AGB). But the allometric models only account for the potential effects of climate on tree biomass and do not simultaneously explain the influence of climate on D growth. In this study, based on the AGB data from 256 destructively sampled trees of three larch species randomly distributed across the five secondary climate zones in northeastern and northern China, we first developed a climate-sensitive AGB base model and a climate-sensitive D growth base model using a nonlinear least square regression separately. A compatible simultaneous model system was then developed with the climate-sensitive AGB and D growth models using a nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression. The potential effects of several temperature and precipitation variables on AGB and D growth were evaluated. The fitting results of climatic sensitive base models were compared against those of their compatible simultaneous model system. It was found that a decreased isothermality ([mean of monthly (maximum temperature-minimum temperature)]/(Maximum temperature of the warmest month-Minimum temperature of the coldest month)) and total growing season precipitation, and increased annual precipitation significantly increased the values of AGB; an increase of temperature seasonality (a standard deviation of the mean monthly temperature) and precipitation seasonality (a standard deviation of the mean monthly precipitation) could lead to the increase of D. The differences of the model fitting results between the compatible simultaneous system with the consideration of climate effects on both AGB and D growth and its corresponding climate-sensitive AGB and D growth base models were very small and insignificant (p > 0. 0 5). Compared to the base models, the inherent correlation of AGB with D was taken into account effectively by the proposed compatible model system developed with the climate-sensitive AGB and D growth models. In the agricultural landscape, thousands of animals are killed yearly as a result of agricultural machinery innovation, mostly because of a higher harvesting speed and wider cutting bars. Harvesting machines besides predation by red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) on roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) in the intensively managed cultural landscape are the most crucial factor in fawn mortality. This article offers an evaluation of the mostly used preventive methods, which aim to drive roe deer does along with their fawns out of fodder meadows prepared for harvest in the Czech Republic. Evaluation of efficiency and effectiveness of the different methods was made based on the questionnaire survey published in a professional hunting journal. The assessment of responses from a survey was followed by a field-based investigation conducted before fodder harvesting. The devices studied for efficiency were acoustic, optical and scent deterrents in comparison to the traditional search method combined with volunteers and hunting dogs. The results show differences in the number of fawns saved per hectare. A significant difference was found only between the optical deterrent method (0.4 fawns saved per hectare) and traditional search method (0.09 fawns saved per hectare). This study found no substantial difference among various deterring devices in terms of their effectiveness in reducing the mortality of roe deer fawns. Thus, it is important to explore the innovative methods in the future that can work most effectively for saving not only deer fawns, but also other game animals in the cultural landscape. Wildlife attacks on people in and around protected areas have become one of the main challenges for wildlife management authorities. We assessed all correlates of wildlife attacks during 2003–2013 in the vicinity of Chitwan National Park, Nepal. We used data from various sources (discussion with stakeholders, field observations, questionnaire surveys). Wildlife attacks were significantly correlated to factors such as site, season and time, activity, gender and awareness. Moreover, 89% of recorded attacks occurred outside the Park. The number of attacks fluctuated widely and patterns of attacks were significantly uneven across seasons and months. Of the 87% of attacks that occurred during the day, 63% occurred in the morning. Most victims were male and c. 45% of attacks occurred when people were collecting forest resources or working on croplands. Attacks were carried out predominantly by rhinoceros Rhinoceros unicornis (38%), tigers Panthera tigris (21%), sloth bears Melursus ursinus (18%), elephants Elephas maximus (9%) and wild boar Sus scrofa (8%). The people attacked lived close to the Park, depended on farming for their livelihoods, and had little knowledge of animal behaviour. Attacks can be mitigated through proper management of habitats inside the Park and raising awareness of wildlife behaviour among local people. Therefore, accurate predictions of the population size of A. agrarius and an efficient control strategy are urgently needed. We developed a population dynamics model by applying a Leslie matrix method, and a capture model based on optimal harvesting theory for A. agrarius. Our models were parametrized using demographic estimates from a capture-mark-recapture (CMR) study conducted on the Qinshui Forest Farm in Northwestern China. The population dynamics model incorporated 12 equally balanced age groups and included immigration and emigration parameters. The model was evaluated by assessing the predictions for four years based on the known starting population in 2004 from the 2004-2007 CMR data. The capture model incorporated two functional age categories (juvenile and adult) and used density-dependent and density-independent factors. The models were used to assess the effect of rodent control measures between 2004 and 2023 on population dynamics and the resulting numbers of rats. Three control measures affecting survival rates were considered. We found that the predicted population dynamics of A. agrarius between 2004 and 2007 compared favorably with the observed population dynamics. The models predicted that the population sizes of A. agrarius in the period between 2004 and 2023 under the control measure applied in August 2004 were very similar to the optimal population sizes, and no significant difference was found between the two population sizes. We recommend using the population dynamics and capture models based on CMR-estimated demographic schedules for rodent, provided these data are available. Forest canopy height is one of the most important spatial characteristics for forest resource inventories and forest ecosystem modeling. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) can be used to accurately detect canopy surface and terrain information from the backscattering signals of laser pulses, while photogrammetry tends to accurately depict the canopy surface envelope. The spatial differences between the canopy surfaces estimated by LiDAR and photogrammetry have not been investigated in depth. Thus, this study aims to assess LiDAR and photogrammetry point clouds and analyze the spatial differences in canopy heights. The study site is located in the Jigongshan National Nature Reserve of Henan Province, Central China. Six data sets, including one LiDAR data set and five photogrammetry data sets captured from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), were used to estimate the forest canopy heights. Three spatial distribution descriptors, namely, the effective cell ratio (ECR), point cloud homogeneity (PCH) and point cloud redundancy (PCR), were developed to assess the LiDAR and photogrammetry point clouds in the grid. The ordinary neighbor (ON) and constrained neighbor (CN) interpolation algorithms were used to fill void cells in digital surface models (DSMs) and canopy height models (CHMs). The CN algorithm could be used to distinguish small and large holes in the CHMs. The optimal spatial resolution was analyzed according to the ECR changes of DSMs or CHMs resulting from the CN algorithms. Large negative and positive variations were observed between the LiDAR and photogrammetry canopy heights. The stratified mean difference in canopy heights increased gradually from negative to positive when the canopy heights were greater than 3 m, which means that photogrammetry tends to overestimate low canopy heights and underestimate high canopy heights. The CN interpolation algorithm achieved smaller relative root mean square errors than the ON interpolation algorithm. This article provides an operational method for the spatial assessment of point clouds and suggests that the variations between LiDAR and photogrammetry CHMs should be considered when modeling forest parameters. The forest growth and yield models, which are used as important decision-support tools in forest management, are commonly based on the individual tree characteristics, such as diameter at breast height (DBH), crown ratio, and height to crown base (HCB). Taking direct measurements for DBH and HCB through the ground-based methods is cumbersome and costly. The indirect method of getting such information is possible from remote sensing databases, which can be used to build DBH and HCB prediction models. The DBH and HCB of the same trees are significantly correlated, and so their inherent correlations need to be appropriately accounted for in the DBH and HCB models. However, all the existing DBH and HCB models, including models based on light detection and ranging (LiDAR) have ignored such correlations and thus failed to account for the compatibility of DBH and HCB estimates, in addition to disregarding measurement errors. To address these problems, we developed a compatible simultaneous equation system of DBH and HCB error-in-variable (EIV) models using LiDAR-derived data and ground-measurements for 510 Picea crassifolia Kom trees in northwest China. Four versatile algorithms, such as nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (NSUR), two-stage least square (2SLS) regression, three-stage least square (3SLS) regression, and full information maximum likelihood (FIML) were evaluated for their estimating efficiencies and precisions for a simultaneous equation system of DBH and HCB EIV models. In addition, two other model structures, namely, nonlinear least squares with HCB estimation not based on the DBH (NLS and NBD) and nonlinear least squares with HCB estimation based on the DBH (NLS and BD) were also developed, and their fitting precisions with a simultaneous equation system compared. The leave-one-out cross-validation method was applied to evaluate all estimating algorithms and their resulting models. We found that only the simultaneous equation system could illustrate the effect of errors associated with the regressors on the response variables (DBH and HCB) and guaranteed the compatibility between the DBH and HCB models at an individual level. In addition, such an established system also effectively accounted for the inherent correlations between DBH with HCB. However, both the NLS and BD model and the NLS and NBD model did not show these properties. The precision of a simultaneous equation system developed using NSUR appeared the best among all the evaluated algorithms. Our equation system does not require the stand-level information as input, but it does require the information of tree height, crown width, and crown projection area, all of which can be readily derived from LiDAR imagery using the delineation algorithms and ground-based DBH measurements. Our results indicate that NSUR is a more reliable and quicker algorithm for developing DBH and HCB models using large scale LiDAR-based datasets. The novelty of this study is that the compatibility problem of the DBH model and the HCB EIV model was properly addressed, and the potential algorithms were compared to choose the most suitable one (NSUR). Rapidly advancing airborne laser scanning technology has become greatly useful to estimate tree- and stand-level variables at a large scale using high spatial resolution data. Compared with that of ground measurements, the accuracy of the inferred information of diameter at breast height (DBH) from a remotely sensed database and the models developed with traditional regression approaches (e.g., ordinary least square regression) may not be sufficient. Thus, this regression approach is no longer appropriate to develop accurate models and predict DBH from remotely sensed-related variables because DBH is subject to the random effects of forest stands. This study developed a generalized nonlinear mixed-effects DBH estimation model from remotely sensed imagery data. The light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-derived stand canopy density, crown projection area, and tree height were used as predictors in the DBH estimation model. These variables can be more readily measured over an extensive forest area with higher accuracy compared to the conventional field-based methods. The airborne LiDAR data for a total of 402 Picea crassifolia Kom trees on a sample plot that were divided into 16 sub-sample plots and located in the most important distribution region of western China were used. The leave-one sub-sample plot-out cross-validation method was applied to evaluate the model's prediction accuracy. The results indicated that the random effects of the sub-sample plot on the prediction of DBH were large and their inclusion into the DBH model significantly improved the prediction accuracy. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model at the mean (M) response was also substantially improved relative to the accuracy obtained from the base model. Among several tree selection alternatives evaluated, a sample size of the two largest trees per sub-sample plot used in estimating the random effects showed a significantly higher accuracy compared to other sampling alternatives. This sample size would balance both the measurement cost and potential prediction errors. The nonlinear mixed-effects DBH estimation model at the M response can also be applied if obtaining the estimates of individual tree DBH with a relatively lower cost, and a lower prediction accuracy was the purpose of the study.
