Polyolefins have a multitude of uses across packaging, automotive and construction sectors. Their resistance to degradation during reprocessing enables recyclability, but variability in recycled polymer feedstocks renders it difficult to assure their manufacturing suitability. The lack of quality control methods has disabled circular economy pathways; product failure is costly, wasteful and time-intensive. Using rheology-simulated and extrusion-based recycling experiments, we explore the degradation pathways of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Chain scission dominates during the initial degradation of HDPE, and increasing exposure to O 2 shifts the dominant mechanism to long-chain branching. Importantly, extending this method to post-consumer recyclate (PCR), the results show potential as a methodology to assess recyclate quality to enable a circular plastics economy. A diversity of chemicals are intentionally added to plastics to enhance their properties and aid in manufacture. Yet, the accumulated chemical composition of these materials is essentially unknown even to those within the supply chain, let alone to consumers or recyclers. Recent legislated and voluntary commitments to increase recycled content in plastic products highlight the practical challenges wrought by these chemical mixtures, amid growing public concern about the impacts of plastic-associated chemicals on environmental and human health. In this Perspective, we offer guidance for plastics manufacturers to collaborate across sectors and critically assess their use of added chemicals. Metal-free catalysts have garnered considerable interest as an environmental and economical alternative to precious metal catalysts. Bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride (PPNCl) has emerged as a prominent choice due to its air and thermal stability and broad reactivity, especially in applications where a bulky cation is needed. The high phosphorus content and synthetic effort required for catalyst synthesis increase environmental impact; the recyclability of PPNCl in catalytic processes remains largely unexplored. The potential development of a polymer-supported PPNCl catalysts therefore desirable to enable this recyclability. In this work, we synthesise polymeric PPNCl (poly(PPNCl)) for the first time. Poly(PPNCl) demonstrates a comparative catalytic reactivity to its small molecule variant when employed as a catalyst in halogen-exchange reactions and CO 2 /epoxide coupling. For the latter the effect of catalyst loading, CO 2 pressure, reaction time and addition of co-catalyst on conversion and selectivity was investigated. Fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs) are valuable construction materials owing to their strength, durability, and design flexibility; however, conventional FRPs utilize petroleum-based polymer matrices with limited recyclability. Furthermore, fiber reinforcements are made from nonrenewable feedstocks, through expensive and energy intensive processes, making recovery and reuse advantageous. Thus, FRPs that use biobased and degradable or reprocessable matrices would enable a more sustainable product, as both components can be recovered and reused. We previously developed a family of degradable and reprocessable cross-linked polyesters from bioderived cyclic esters (l-lactide, δ-valerolactone, and ε-caprolactone) copolymerized with a bis(1,3-dioxolan-4-one) cross-linker. We now incorporate these networks into FRPs and demonstrate degradability of the matrix into tartaric acid and oligomers, enabling recovery and reuse of the fiber reinforcement. Furthermore, the effect of varying comonomer structure, catalyst, reinforcement type, and lay-up method on mechanical properties of the resultant FRPs is explored. The societal importance of plastics contrasts with the carelessness with which they are disposed. Their superlative properties lead to economic and environmental efficiency, but the linearity of plastics puts the climate, human health, and global ecosystems at risk. Recycling is fundamental to transitioning this linear model into a more sustainable, circular economy. Among recycling technologies, chemical depolymerization offers a route to virgin quality recycled plastics, especially when valorizing complex waste streams poorly served by mechanical methods. However, chemical depolymerization exists in a complex and interlinked system of end-of-life fates, with the complementarity of each approach key to environmental, economic, and societal sustainability. This review explores the recent progress made into the depolymerization of five commercial polymers: poly(ethylene terephthalate), polycarbonates, polyamides, aliphatic polyesters, and polyurethanes. Attention is paid not only to the catalytic technologies used to enhance depolymerization efficiencies but also to the interrelationship with other recycling technologies and to the systemic constraints imposed by a global economy. Novel polymers, designed for chemical depolymerization, are also concisely reviewed in terms of their underlying chemistry and potential for integration with current plastic systems.

Fluorophores displaying concentration-dependent luminescence are becoming increasingly valuable in stress-sensing, tagging, and dyeing applications, including the quantification of recycled content in plastic packaging. In this work, we investigate the effects of the polymer matrix, dye structure, and crystallinity on aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE). We demonstrate that the aggregation threshold required for successful quantification can be adjusted through modulation of guest-host (dye-polymer) interactions and monitored using an array of fluorescence characterization. Modification of guest-host interactions is realized through choice of host, change of guest, and tuning of the crystallinity of the host system. Increasing the number of guest-host interactions and solubility between guest and host, loosely predicted through the calculation of the solubility parameter, increases the aggregation threshold relative to other low-polarity and low-interacting systems. We demonstrate that issues, such as loading level and cost, associated with high aggregation thresholds, can be circumvented by increasing system crystallinity, improving spectral intensities, and subsequent quantification. Most of plastic packaging waste does not degrade over time, which can lead to harmful effects on aquatic life and humans, highlighting the need for packaging materials that are easily degradable. Poly(mandelic acid) (PMA) is a biodegradable polymer that has been proposed as an alternative to polystyrene for use in packaging. However, its potential to replace the existing packaging materials also depends, among other factors, on the environmental sustainability of its production. This study aims to estimate and compare the life cycle environmental impacts of the production of PMA via polymerisation of 5-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-one (Ph-DOX) and o-carboxyanhydride (OCA) monomers. For each route, the impacts are evaluated for 18 ReCiPe categories for reported laboratory scales and potential scaled-up commercial production. The results suggest that most of the impacts of PMA production via the Ph-DOX route are significantly lower (≥20%) than that of the OCA route for both the laboratory and large scales. However, compared to polystyrene, the impacts of large-scale PMA production via the (better of the two) Ph-DOX route are more than five times higher. This is largely due to the use of benzaldehyde, enzymes, hydrocyanic acid and sodium phosphate in the production of mandelic acid and the solvents utilised in monomer synthesis. A sensitivity analysis shows that the bio-transformation of bio-glycerol to produce mandelic acid would reduce 16 out of 18 life cycle impacts of PMA by 6-77%. The impacts are also sensitive to the assumptions used in the scaling-up of laboratory data for solvents. However, the results indicate clearly that, despite all the uncertainties in the scaling-up method, the proposed production routes for PMA would still have several times higher environmental impacts than polystyrene. Polymeric frustrated Lewis pairs, or poly(FLP)s, have served to bridge the gap between functional polymer science and main group catalysis, pairing the uniqueness of sterically frustrated Lewis acids and bases with a polymer scaffold to create self-healing gels and recyclable catalysts. However, their utilization in radical chemistry is unprecedented. In this paper, we disclose the synthesis of polymeric frustrated radical pairs, or poly(FRP)s, by in situ photoinduction of FLP moieties, where their Lewis acidic and basic centers are tuned to promote single electron transfer (SET). Through systematic manipulation of the chemical structure, we demonstrate that inclusion of ortho-methyl groups on phosphine monomers is crucial to enable SET. The generation of radicals is evidenced by monitoring the stable polymeric phosphine radical cations via UV/vis and EPR spectroscopy. These new poly(FRP)s enable both catalytic hydrogenation and radical-mediated photocatalytic perfluoroalkylations. These polymeric radical systems open new avenues to design novel functional polymers for catalysis and photoelectrical chemistry.

As society moves towards a net-zero future, the need to adopt more sustainable polymers is well understood, and as well as plastics, less visible formulation polymers should also be included within this shift. As researchers, industries and consumers move towards more sustainable products there is a clear need to define what sustainability means in fast moving consumer goods and how it can be considered at the design stage. The recycling of multimaterials such as payment or access cards poses significant challenges. Building on previous experimental work demonstrating the feasibility of chemically recyclable payment cards made from glycol-modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET-G), we use life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis to investigate two chemical recycling scenarios and evaluate their potential environmental and economic benefits. Recovering all components from the depolymerized products (Scenario 1) achieves substantial environmental benefits across most categories, reducing global warming by up to 67% compared to only recovering major components (Scenario 2). However, the environmental benefits in Scenario 1 incur 69% higher total annualized costs, causing its profitability to be dependent on a minimum selling price of £13.4/kg for cyclohexanedimethanol and less than a 10% discount rate. Chemically cross-linked polymers offer excellent temperature and solvent resistance, but their high dimensional stability precludes reprocessing. The renewed demand for sustainable and circular polymers from public, industry, and government stakeholders has increased research into recycling thermoplastics, but thermosets have often been overlooked. To address this need for more sustainable thermosets, we have developed a novel bis(1,3-dioxolan-4-one) monomer, derived from the naturally occurring l-(+)-tartaric acid. This compound can be used as a cross-linker and copolymerized in situ with common cyclic esters such as l-lactide, ε-caprolactone, and δ-valerolactone to produce cross-linked, degradable polymers. The structure-property relationships and the final network properties were tuned by both co-monomer choice and composition, with properties ranging from resilient solids with tensile strengths of 46.7 MPa to elastomers with elongations up to 147%. In addition to exhibiting properties rivalling those of commercial thermosets, the synthesized resins could be recovered at end-of-life through triggered degradation or reprocessing. Accelerated hydrolysis experiments showed the materials fully degraded to tartaric acid and the corresponding oligomers from 1 to 14 days under mild basic conditions and in a matter of minutes in the presence of a transesterification catalyst. The vitrimeric reprocessing of networks was demonstrated at elevated temperatures, and rates could be tuned by modifying the concentration of the residual catalyst. The linearity of the plastics economy is wasteful and polluting. To encourage recycling and decrease diversion to landfill, new legislation within the EU and UK will tax single-use plastic products made with less than 30% recycled plastic. At present, quantitative determination of recycled content is elusive and existing methods are inconsistent. We present a fluorescence-based analytical technique to determine recycled content in plastic and (single use) packaging. Bathochromic shifts resulting from aggregation of the fluorescent brightener 4,4'-bis(2-benzoxazolyl) stilbene (BBS) in three commodity plastics [high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate)] at loadings ≤0.5 wt % were used to systematically quantify simulated recycled contents as low as 10 wt %. Linear correlations were found between recycled content and three fluorescence-based properties: emission, lifetime, and resulting color. Poor waste management and unchecked consumption underpin our current paradigm of plastics use, which is demonstrably unsustainable in the long term. Nonetheless, the utility and versatility of plastics suggest that the notion of a plastic-free society is also unsustainable. Responses to this conundrum are increasing, and among these are research efforts focused on the development of more sustainable plastics. This Account, written by trained chemists, reflects an academic research journey culminating in an appreciation of the importance of improving and enabling the overarching systems that plastics exist within. Our primary initial focus was on catalyst development because catalysts are key drivers of sustainability by improving the efficiency and ease of polymerization. Metal catalysts ranging in ligand structure and the incorporated metal(s) were developed for the preparation of traditional polyesters such as poly(lactic acid) and polycaprolactone. The central themes in these works were stereocontrol (tacticity), efficiency (polymerization rate), and versatility (monomer scope). Alongside insights gained by systematically varying catalyst structure came impressive results gained through collaboration, including the remarkably high activity of novel heterometallic zinc catalysts toward various cyclic esters.This catalysis work was complemented by and slowly transitioned to a focus on polymer functionality and monomer design. Several fundamental studies focus on polymer topology, specifically star-shaped polyesters, tuned arm number, length, and tacticity. These reports feature emphases on the end of life (solvolysis) and physical properties of polymers, which were increasingly important themes as work shifted toward new methods of incorporating functionality in polymers produced by ring-opening polymerization. Three key highlights demonstrate this shift: the first two rely upon the exploitation of olefin metathesis (cross- and ring-closing) to functionalize polyesters or polyethers, and the third involves the manipulation of ring-opening polymerization equilibrium to enable selective monomer recovery from a polyester. Our foundational work on 1,3-dioxolan-4-one (DOX) monomers is then discussed because this emerging class of molecules offers a distinct synthetic pathway toward functional polyesters, both conventional and novel. With this DOX framework, polyesters that are usually challenging to synthesize (e.g., poly(mandelic acid)) are accessible because polymerization is driven by the concomitant, controlled extrusion of small molecules (acetone or formaldehyde).After these polyester-focused highlights, the foundation of our ongoing work is presented, namely, that polymer sustainability must be viewed from a systems-level perspective, including economic and social components alongside the environmental considerations. Material design must be driven by practice, and we have to involve key players in academia, industry, and government in a concerted effort to enable positive and robust change. The key goal is to develop sustainable systems that retain plastics in their highest value state for as long as possible by designing materials and products for a particular (and assured) end-of-life fate, whether that be reuse, recycling, (bio)degradation, or energy recovery.

Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) are now ubiquitous as metal-free catalysts in an array of different chemical transformations. In this paper we show that this reactivity can be transferred to a polymeric system, offering advantageous opportunities at the interface between catalysis and stimuli-responsive materials. Formation of cyclic carbonates from cyclic ethers using CO 2 as a C 1 feedstock continues to be dominated by metal-based systems. When paired with a suitable nucleophile, discrete aryl or alkyl boranes have shown significant promise as metal-free Lewis acidic alternatives, although catalyst reuse remains illusive. Herein, we leverage the reactivity of FLPs in a polymeric system to promote CO 2 /cyclic ether coupling catalysis that can be tuned for the desired epoxide or oxetane substrate. Insulating materials are ubiquitous in a built environment and play a critical role in reducing the energy consumed to maintain habitable indoor environments. Mineral wool insulation (MWI) products, including glass, stone, and slag variants, are the most widely used class of insulating materials in Europe and account for more than 50% of the total market by volume. MWI typically consists of two key components: a mesh of inorganic fibers that are several micrometers in diameter, and an organic thermosetting adhesive commonly referred to as the "binder." Traditional phenol-formaldehyde-urea (PFU) binders used in the manufacture of MWI are increasingly being scrutinized for the formaldehyde released during their manufacture and service lifetime. The recent classification of formaldehyde as a carcinogen by various safety organizations has accelerated a paradigm shift within the industry toward alternative binder technologies that minimize or indeed eliminate formaldehyde emissions. This review examines more recent strategies for achieving low- or zero-added formaldehyde binders for MWI, with a particular focus on the patent literature. Sterically hindered Lewis acid and base centers are unable to form Lewis adducts, instead forming frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), where latent reactivity can be utilized for the activation of small molecules. Applying FLP chemistry into polymeric frameworks transforms this chemistry into responsive and functional materials. Here, we report a versatile synthesis strategy for the preparation of macromolecular FLPs and explore its potential with the ring-opening reactions of cyclic ethers. Addition of the cyclic substrates triggered polymer network formation, where the extent of cross-linking, strength of network, and reactivity are tuned by the steric and electronic properties of the ethers. The resultant networks behave like covalently cross-linked polymers, demonstrating the versatility of FLPs to simultaneously tune both small-molecule capture and mechanical properties of materials.

The current global plastics economy is highly linear, with the exceptional performance and low carbon footprint of polymeric materials at odds with dramatic increases in plastic waste. Transitioning to a circular economy that retains plastic in its highest value condition is essential to reduce environmental impacts, promoting reduction, reuse, and recycling. Mechanical recycling is an essential tool in an environmentally and economically sustainable economy of plastics, but current mechanical recycling processes are limited by cost, degradation of mechanical properties, and inconsistent quality products. This review covers the current methods and challenges for the mechanical recycling of the five main packaging plastics: poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and poly(vinyl chloride) through the lens of a circular economy. Their reprocessing induced degradation mechanisms are introduced and strategies to improve their recycling are discussed. Heterometallic cooperativity is an emerging strategy to elevate polymerisation catalyst performance. Here, we report the first heterotrimetallic Na/Zn 2 and K/Zn 2 complexes supported by a ProPhenol ligand, which deliver "best of both" in cyclic ester ring-opening polymerisation, combining the outstanding activity (Na/K) and good control (Zn 2 ) of homometallic analogues. Detailed NMR studies and density-functional theory calculations suggest that the Na/Zn 2 and K/Zn 2 complexes retain their heterometallic structures in the solution-state. To the best of our knowledge, the K/Zn 2 analogue is the most active heterometallic catalyst reported for rac -lactide polymerisation ( k obs = 1.7 × 10 -2 s -1 ), giving activities five times faster than the Na/Zn 2 complex. These versatile catalysts also display outstanding performance in ε-caprolatone and δ-valerolactone ring-opening polymerisation. Coccolithophores are marine phytoplankton that are among the most prolific calcifiers widespread in Earth's oceans, playing a crucial role in the carbon cycle and in the transport of organic matter to the deep sea. These organisms produce highly complex mineralized scales that are composed of hierarchical assemblies of nano-crystals of calcium carbonate in the form of calcite. Coccolith formation in vivo occurs within compartmentalized mineralisation vesicles derived from the Golgi body, which contain coccolith-associated polysaccharides ('CAPs') providing polymorph selection and mediating crystal growth kinetics, and oval organic mineralisation templates, also known as base plates, which promote heterogenous nucleation and further mechanical interlocking of calcite single crystals. Although the function of coccolith base plates in controlling crystal nucleation have been widely studied, their 3D spatial organization and the chemical functional groups present on the crystal nucleation sites, which are two crucial features impacting biomineralization, remain unsolved. Utilising cryo-electron tomography we show that base plates derived from an exemplary coccolithophore Pleurochrysis carterae (Pcar) in their native hydrated state have a complex 3-layered structure. We further demonstrate, for the first time, the edge and rim of the base plate - where the crystals nucleate - are rich in primary amine functionalities that provide binding targets for negatively charged complexes composed of synthetic macromolecules and Ca 2+ ions. Our results indicate that electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged biogenic CAPs and the positively charged rim of the base plate are sufficient to mediate the transport of Ca 2+ cations to the mineralization sites., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) are attractive candidates for the controlled and targeted delivery of therapeutics in vitro and in vivo. However, detailed understanding of the uptake, location, and ultimate cellular fate of the NPs is necessary to satisfy safety concerns, which is difficult because of the nanoscale size of these carriers. In this work, we show how small chemical labels can be appended to poly(lactic acid- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA) to synthesize NPs that can then be imaged by stimulated Raman scattering microscopy, a vibrational imaging technique that can elucidate bond-specific information in biological environments, such as the identification of alkyne signatures in modified PLGA terpolymers. We show that both deuterium and alkyne labeled NPs can be imaged within primary rat microglia, and the alkyne NPs can also be imaged in ex vivo cortical mouse brain tissue. Immunohistochemical analysis confirms that the NPs localize in microglia in the mouse brain tissue, demonstrating that these NPs have the potential to deliver therapeutics selectively to microglia.

Morpholino Oligonucleotides (MOs), an uncharged DNA analogue, are functionalized with an acrylamide moiety and incorporated into polymer hydrogels as responsive cross-links for microRNA sequence detection. The MO cross-links can be selectively cleaved by a short target analyte single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) sequence based on microRNA, inducing a distinct swelling response measured optically. The MO cross-links offer significant improvement over DNA based systems through improved thermal stability, no salt requirement and 1000-fold improved sensitivity over a comparative biosensor, facilitating a wider range of sensing conditions. Analysis was also achieved using a mobile phone camera, demonstrating portability.

A series of monometallic pentacoordinate Fe III chloride complexes have been prepared and characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the bis-chelated Fe III complexes bear distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries. The air- and moisture-stable Fe III complexes were screened as mediators in the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and methyl methacrylate. Moderate to excellent control was achieved with dispersities as low as 1.1 for both poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene. Kinetic studies showed living characteristics, and end group analysis revealed the presence of olefin-terminated polymer chains, suggesting catalytic chain transfer as a competing polymerization mechanism. Although the catalysts are not the fastest Fe ATRP mediators, they are robust and flexible. Using propylene oxide as an initiator, the complexes were active catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of rac -lactide with moderate control. While the addition of propylene oxide has been reported as an efficient method of converting a metal-halide bond to a metal-alkoxide bond in situ, we show herein that this initiation mechanism can limit polymerization reproducibility and introduce an induction period., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Two monomers, M:OO and M:ON, and their corresponding polymers, P:OO and P:ON, were prepared from styrene derivatives N,N-diphenyl-4-vinyl-aniline with different substituents (-OCH3 and -N(CH3)2) in the N-phenyl para positions. The polymers were synthesised and fully characterised to study their function as hole transport materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The thermal, optical and electrochemical properties and performance of these monomers and polymers as HTMs in PSCs were compared in terms of their structure. The polymers form more stable amorphous glassy states and showed higher thermal stability than the monomers. The different substituent in the para position influenced the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level, altering the oxidation potential. Both monomers and polymers were employed as HTMs in perovskite solar cells with a device configuration FTO/bl-TiO2/mp-TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3/HTM/Au resulting in power conversion efficiencies of 7.48% for M:OO, 5.14% for P:OO, 5.28% for P:ON and 3.52% for M:ON. Although showing comparatively low efficiencies, the polymers showed much superior reproducibility in comparison with Spiro-OMeTAD or the monomers, suggesting further optimisation of polymeric HTMs with redox side groups is warranted.

Three phenoxyimine Fe(iii)Cl complexes bearing electronically diverse -Cl, -H or - t Bu substituents in the ortho position were synthesised. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the complexes reveals mononuclear structures with pentacoordinate iron centres and trigonal bipyramidal geometries. All three complexes demonstrated excellent catalytic activities towards CO 2 /epoxide coupling to selectively form cyclic carbonates, with catalyst activity correlating with the electron withdrawing nature of the ortho-substituent (Cl > H > t Bu) and thus the Lewis acidity of the metal centre. The chloro-substituted complex displayed remarkable activity in the synthesis of propylene carbonate from propylene oxide and CO 2 , reaching turnover frequencies (TOF) up to 760 h -1 in the presence of TBABr co-catalyst at 120 °C and 20 bars of CO 2 pressure. Importantly, the catalyst is also very robust, functioning with high substrate loading, under air or in the presence of water. The substrate scope was successfully extended to other terminal epoxides including epichlorohydrin (TOF = 900 h -1 ) and to the more challenging internal epoxide, cyclohexene oxide (TOF = 80 h -1 ). These are amongst the highest TOF values reported for an iron CO 2 /epoxide coupling catalyst to date.

Whereas complex stereoregular cyclic architectures are commonplace in biomacromolecules, they remain rare in synthetic polymer chemistry, thus limiting the potential to develop synthetic mimics or advanced materials for biomedical applications. Herein we disclose the formation of a stereocontrolled 1,4-linked six-membered cyclopolyether prepared by ring-closing metathesis (RCM). Ru-mediated RCM, with careful control of the catalyst, concentration, and temperature, selectively affords the six-membered-ring cyclopolymer. Under optimized reaction conditions, no metathetical degradation, macrocycle formation, or cross-linking was observed. Post-polymerization modification by dihydroxylation afforded a novel polymer family encompassing a poly(ethylene glycol) backbone and sugar-like functionalities ("PEGose"). We studied the morphology of poly(styrene- co-butadiene) random copolymers on a graphite surface. Polymer solutions were spin coated onto graphite, at various concentrations and molecular weights. The polymer films and nanostructures were imaged using atomic force microscopy. Above the overlap concentration, thin films formed. However, total wetting did not occur, despite the polymers being well above their T g . Instead, dewetting was observed, suggesting the films were in a state of metastable equilibrium. At lower concentrations, the polymers formed networks, nanoislands, and nanoribbons. Ordered nanopatterns were observed on the surface; the polymers orientated themselves due to π-π stacking interactions reflecting the crystalline structure of the graphite. At the lowest concentration, this ordering was very pronounced. At higher concentrations, it was less defined but still statistically significant. Higher degrees of ordering were observed with poly(styrene- co-butadiene) than polystyrene and polybutadiene homopolymers as the copolymer's aromatic rings are distributed along a flexible chain, which maximizes π-π stacking. At the two lowest concentrations, the size of the nanoislands and nanoribbons remained similar with varying molecular weight. However, at higher concentrations, the polymer network features were largest at the lowest molecular weight, indicating that in this case, a large proportion of shorter chains stay on top of the adsorbed ones. The contact angles of the polymer nanostructures remained mostly constant with size, which is due to the strong polymer/graphite adhesion dominating over line tension and entropic effects.

Steric bulk prevents the formation of strong bonds between Lewis acids and bases in frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), where latent reactivity makes these reagents transformative in small molecule activations and metal-free catalysis. However, their use as a platform for developing materials chemistry is unexplored. Here we report a fully macromolecular FLP, built from linear copolymers that containing either a sterically encumbered Lewis base or Lewis acid as a pendant functional group. The target functional copolymers were prepared by a controlled radical copolymerization of styrene with designer boron or phosphorus containing monomers. Mixtures of the B- and P-functionalized polystyrenes do not react, with the steric bulk of the functional monomers preventing the favorable Lewis acid base interaction. Addition of a small molecule (diethyl azodicarboxylate) promotes rapid network formation, cross-linking the reactive polymer chains. The resulting gel is dynamic, can self-heal, is heat responsive, and can be reshaped by postgelation processing.

The self-assembly of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) random copolymers on mica surfaces was studied by varying solution concentrations and polymer molecular weights. Toluene solutions of the poly(styrene-co-butadiene) samples were spin coated onto a mica surface and the resulting polymer morphology was investigated by atomic force microscopy. At higher concentrations, thin films formed with varying thicknesses; some dewetting was observed which depended on the molecular weight. Total dewetting did not occur despite the polymer's low glass transition temperature. Instead, partial dewetting was observed suggesting that the polymer was in a metastable equilibrium state. At lower concentrations, spherical cap shaped nanodroplets formed with varying sizes from single polymer chains to aggregates containing millions of chains. As the molecular weight was increased, fewer aggregates were observed on the surface, albeit with larger sizes resulting from increased solution viscosities and more chain entanglements at higher molecular weights. The contact angles of the nanodroplets were shown to be size dependent. A minimum contact angle occurs for droplets with radii of 100-250 nm at each molecular weight. Droplets smaller than 100 nm showed a sharp increase in contact angle; attributed to an increase in the elastic modulus of the droplets, in addition, to a positive line tension value. Droplets larger than 250 nm also showed an increased contact angle due to surface heterogeneities which cannot be avoided for larger droplets. This increase in contact angle plateaus as the droplet size reaches the macroscopic scale.

The C 3 -symmetric uranium(iv) and cerium(iv) complexes Me 3 SiOM(OAr P ) 3 , M = U (1), Ce (2), OAr P = OC 6 H 2 -6- t Bu-4-Me-2-PPh 2 , have been prepared and the difference between these 4f and 5f congeners as initiators for the ring opening polymerisation (ROP) of l-lactide is compared. The poorly controlled reactivity of the homoleptic analogue U(OAr P ) 4 (3) demonstrates the importance of the M-OSiMe 3 initiating group. The incorporation of a nickel atom in 1 to form the U-Ni heterobimetallic complex Me 3 SiOU(OAr P ) 3 Ni (4) may be the first example of the use of the inverse trans influence to switch the reactivity of a complex. This would imply the formation of the U-Ni bond strengthens the U-OSiMe 3 bond to such an extent that the ROP catalysis is switched off. Changing the conditions to immortal polymerisation dramatically increases polymerisation rates, and switches the order, with the Ce complex now faster than the U analogue, suggesting ligand protonolysis to afford a more open coordination sphere. For the ROP of rac-lactide, uranium complex 1 promotes heterotacticity at the highest levels of stereocontrol yet reported for an actinide complex.

A series of tridentate, ONO- and ONN-chelating β-ketiminate ligands were synthesised via condensation reactions, and complexed with iron(ii) using [Fe(N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) 2 THF]. The complexation reactions proceeded in high yields to generate novel, monomeric, tetracoordinate iron(ii) complexes, each bearing a bis(trimethylsilyl)amide ligand, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. These complexes were amenable to further reaction (protonolysis) with alcohols and phenols, generating alkoxide/phenolate-containing complexes that were dimeric in the solid state. All complexes synthesised were screened as potential mediators of the controlled radical polymerisation (CRP) of styrene and methyl methacrylate under both atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) and organometallic mediated radical polymerisation (OMRP) conditions. Whilst all of the complexes were relatively poor ATRP mediators under the conditions used here, regardless of monomer choice, dispersities (Đ) as low as 1.58 for styrene and 1.23 for methyl methacylate polymerisation under OMRP conditions could be achieved. The better performance in methacrylate polymerisation suggests the formation of a stronger metal-carbon bond in these systems. In particular, the use of a β-ketiminate ligand functionalised with an N,N-dimethylethylene pendant arm and a 2,6-diphenylphenolate ligand affords a potential Fe-based mediator of methyl methacrylate OMRP.

The reduction and reductive addition (formal hydroamination) of functionalised nitroarenes is reported using a simple and bench-stable iron(iii) catalyst and silane. The reduction is chemoselective for nitro groups over an array of reactive functionalities (ketone, ester, amide, nitrile, sulfonyl and aryl halide). The high activity of this earth-abundant metal catalyst also facilitates a follow-on reaction in the reductive addition of nitroarenes to alkenes, giving efficient formal hydroamination of olefins under mild conditions. Both reactions offer significant improvements in catalytic activity and chemoselectivity and the utility of these catalysts in facilitating two challenging reactions supports an important mechanistic overlap.

A practical synthesis of highly functionalized amines by the formal hydroamination reaction of alkenes with nitroarenes catalyzed by an air stable amine-bis(phenolate) iron(III) complex is reported. The reaction uses an easily handled silane, low catalyst loadings, and mild reaction conditions. We assess the performance of six density functionals, each paired with one of five basis sets (a total of 30 model chemistries) for the prediction of geometrical parameters in the coordination sphere of nine vanadium complexes (for a total of 270 structural analyses). We find that results are generally consistent over the range of functionals tested and that none fail drastically. For bond lengths, the model chemistry PBE0/QZVP performed the best overall (having a MAD of only 0.02 Å from experiment) yet PBE0/6-31G* provides nearly identical results. For bond angles, PBE0 also performed best overall and, when combined with the 6-31G* basis, produces one of the smallest error distributions of any model chemistry tested. We subsequently applied the PBE0/6-31G* model chemistry to understanding the mechanism of action of a [BIMPY]VCl3 catalyst in the polymerization of styrene (Sty) and vinyl acetate (VAc). Our results indicate that the [BIMPY]VCl3 catalyst operates through a unique, two-step reaction pathway: dehalogenation to form a reactive V(II) intermediate (a highly favorable process) followed by a potentially reversible OMRP to control the polymerization of vinyl acetate. Control over vinyl acetate is facilitated by both the higher reactivity of the radical species and the participation of the ester group in the trapping step. In both the Sty and VAc cases we predict relatively poor control of the polymerization with the vanadium catalyst, which is in good agreement with our experimental results.

This paper presents a review of micro- and nano-structure based oligonucleotide detection and quantification techniques. The characteristics of such devices make them very attractive for Point-of-Care or On-Site-Testing biosensing applications. Their small scale means that they can be robust and portable, their compatibility with modern CMOS electronics means that they can easily be incorporated into hand-held devices and their suitability for mass production means that, out of the different approaches to oligonucleotide detection, they are the most suitable for commercialisation. This review discusses the advantages of micro- and nano-structure based sensors and covers the various oligonucleotide detection techniques that have been developed to date. These include: Bulk Acoustic Wave and Surface Acoustic Wave devices, micro- and nano-cantilever sensors, gene Field Effect Transistors, and nanowire and nanopore based sensors. A DFT study of various model systems has addressed the interference of catalytic chain transfer (CCT) as a function of the R(2) substituent in the atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene catalyzed by [FeCl2 (R(1) N=C(R(2))C(R(2))=NR(1))] complexes. All model systems used R(1) =CH3 in place of the experimental Cy and tBu substituents and 1-phenylethyl in place of the polystyrene (PS) chain. A mechanistic investigation of 1) ATRP activation, 2) radical trapping in organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP), and 3) pathways to the hydride CCT intermediate was conducted with a simplified system with R(2)=H. This study suggests that CCT could occur by direct hydrogen-atom transfer without any activation barrier. Further analysis of more realistic models with R(2)=p-C6 H4 F or p-C6 H4 NMe2 suggests that the electronic effect of the aryl para substituents significantly alters the ATRP activation barrier. Conversely, the hydrogen-atom-transfer barrier is essentially unaffected. Thus, the greater ATRP catalytic activity of the p-NMe2 system makes the background CCT process less significant. The DFT study also compares the [FeCl2 (R(1) N=C(R(2))=C(R(2))=NR(1))] systems with a diaminobis(phenolato) derivative for which the CCT process shows even greater accessibility but has less incidence because of faster ATRP chain growth and interplay with a more efficient OMRP trapping. This study has addressed the radical polymerization of styrene mediated by the diaminobis(phenolate) complexes [Fe(O-2,4-Y2C6H2-5-CH2)2NCH2CH2NMe2], abbreviated as [Fe(II)]. The system is known to be well controlled when Y = Cl but not when Y = alkyl. The control was proposed to occur by a dual ATRP+OMRP mechanism. We have used DFT calculations to address the Y = Cl and Y = CH3 systems. The growing radical chain, ATRP dormant chain, and OMRP dormant chain were simplified to PhCH(CH3)(•), PhCH(CH3)-Cl, and [PhCH(CH3)-Fe(III)]. The idealized ATRP activation/deactivation equilibrium involves [Fe(III)-Cl] (I(Y)) and PhCH(CH3)(•) on the active side and [Fe(II)] (II(Y)) and PhCH(CH3)-Cl on the dormant side, whereas the OMRP activation/deactivation relates [Fe(II)] and PhCH(CH3)(•) with [PhCH(CH3)-Fe(III)] (III(Y)). A benchmarking of various functionals against the known spin properties of alkylporphyriniron(III) shows B3PW91* to be a suitable functional. For the purpose of bond dissociation energy calculations, a dispersion correction was made (B3PW91*-D3). For both Y systems, the ground state is a spin sextet for I, a spin quintet for II, and a spin quartet for III. The calculations show a greater energy cost for the ATRP activation process involving Cl atom addition to II(Cl) to yield I(Cl) (7.2 kcal/mol) relative to the process transforming II(Me) to I(Me) (2.1 kcal/mol). On the other hand, the alkyl addition transforming II to III provides slightly greater stabilization for II(Cl) (27.1 kcal/mol) than for II(Me) (26.1 kcal/mol). As a result, both ATRP and OMRP trapping processes provide greater stabilization for the Y = Cl system, in agreement with the observed better control. The charge analysis attributes these minor but determining energy differences to the inductive electron withdrawing effect of the phenolato Cl substituents. The ATRP and OMRP activation/deactivation pathways have been analyzed in relation to the spin state change; they show in each case the absence of an activation barrier, and both processes corresponding to spin allowed single-state pathways occurring on the quartet (OMRP) and quintet (ATRP) potential energy surfaces. Molecular volume calculations suggest that the balance between ATRP and OMRP may shift in favor of the latter at higher pressures.

A series of cobalt salen complexes, where salen represents an N2O2 bis-Schiff-base bis-phenolate framework, are prepared, characterised and investigated for reversible-termination organometallic mediated radical polymerisation (RT-OMRP). The salen ligands contain a cyclohexane diimine bridge and systematically altered para-substituted phenoxide moieties as a method to examine the electronic impact of the ligand on complex structure and reactivity. The complexes are characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and computational methods. Structural studies all support a tailorable metal centre reactivity altered by the electron-donating ability of the salen ligand. RT-OMRP of styrene, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate is reported and suggests that cobalt-carbon bond strength varies with the ligand substitution. Competing β-hydrogen abstraction affords long-chain olefin-terminated polymer chains and well controlled vinyl acetate polymerisations, contrasting with the lower temperature associative exchange mechanism of degenerative transfer OMRP.

The synthesis and characterization of one novel proligand and six novel vanadium(III) trichloride complexes is described. The controlled radical polymerization activity towards vinyl acetate of these, and eight other bis(imino)pyridine vanadium trichloride complexes previously reported, is investigated. Those complexes possessing variation at the N-aryl para-position with no steric protection offered by ortho-substituents (4 examples) result in poor control over poly(vinyl acetate) polymerization. Control is improved with increasing steric bulk at the ortho-position of the N-aryl substituent (4 examples) although attempts to increase steric bulk past isopropyl were unsuccessful. Synthesizing bis(imino)pyridine vanadium trichloride complexes with substituted imine backbones restores polymerization control when aliphatic substituents are used (4 examples) but ceases to make any drastic improvements on catalyst lifetime. Modification of the polymerization conditions is also investigated, in an attempt to improve the catalyst lifetime. Expansion of the monomer scope to include other vinyl esters, particularly those derived from renewable resources, shows promising results.

Poly(lactic acid)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) copolymers (PLA-b-PEG) featuring varying tacticities (atactic, heterotactic, isotactic) in the PLA block were synthesized and investigated for their micellar stability, degradation, and thermal properties. Utilizing tin(II) bis(2-ethylhexanoate), aluminum salan, and aluminum salen catalysts, the copolymers were synthesized through the ring-opening polymerization of d-, l-, rac-, or a blend of l- and rac-lactide using monomethoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator. The critical micelle concentration, which reflects the micellar stability, was probed using a fluorescence spectroscopic method with pyrene as the probe. The copolymers were degraded in a methanolic solution of 1,5,7-triaza-bicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene and the degradation was measured by (1)H NMR spectroscopic and gel permeation chromatographic analyses. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis provided information on the thermal properties of the copolymers. Atactic and heterotactic microstructures in the PLA block resulted in lower micellar stability, as well as faster degradation and shorter erosion time compared to polymers with high isotactic enchainment (Pm). By modification of the Pm, micellar stability, degradation, and erosion rates of the copolymers can be tuned to specific biomedical applications. Interestingly, while tin(II) bis(2-ethylhexanoate) and aluminum salan-catalyzed PLA-b-PEG copolymers exhibited similar micellization behavior, the aluminum salen-catalyzed PLA-b-PEG exhibited unique behavior at high micelle concentration in the presence of the pyrene probe. This unique behavior can be attributed to the disintegration of the micelles through the interactions of long isotactic stereoblock segments.

Tetradentate amine-bis(phenolate) iron(III) halide complexes containing chloro substituents on the aromatic ring are extremely efficient catalysts for controlled radical polymerization. Molecular weights are in good agreement with theoretical values and polydispersity indexes (PDIs) are as low as 1.11 for styrene and methyl methacrylate polymerizations. Complexes containing alkyl substituents on the aromatic ring are less efficient. Kinetic data reveal activity for styrene polymerization among the fastest reported to date and initial studies implicate a multimechanism system. A critical review: the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters provides access to an array of biodegradable, bioassimilable and renewable polymeric materials. Building these aliphatic polyester polymers into larger macromolecular frameworks provides further control over polymer characteristics and opens up unique applications. Polymer stars, where multiple arms radiate from a single core molecule, have found particular utility in the areas of drug delivery and nanotechnology. A challenge in this field is in understanding the impact of altering synthetic variables on polymer properties. We review the synthesis and characterization of aliphatic polyester polymer stars, focusing on polymers originating from lactide, ε-caprolactone, glycolide, β-butyrolactone and trimethylene carbonate monomers and their copolymers including coverage of polyester miktoarm star copolymers. These macromolecular materials are further categorized by core molecules, catalysts employed, self-assembly and degradation properties and the resulting fields of application (262 references).

The synthesis of a family of polymer stars with arms of varied tacticities is discussed. The effect of polymer tacticity on the physical properties of these polymer stars is presented. Dipentaerythritol cores support six poly(lactic acid) (PLA) arms. Lewis acidic tin and aluminum catalysts control the polymerization to afford polymer stars of variable tacticity. The analysis of these polymers by NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry reveals the effects of tacticity control on the physical properties of the polymer stars. Preliminary decomposition studies suggest that the biodegradation profile of a polymer star may also be tuned by stereochemical control. This is the first systematic altering of tacticity in PLA polymer stars, showing that polymer tacticity can have a great impact on star properties.

Initiation of the polymerization of vinyl acetate with azobis(isobutyronitrile) in the presence of a vanadium bis(iminopyridine) complex generates vanadium-capped dormant polymer chains with excellent correlation between molecular weight and conversion and good molecular weight distributions.

The alpha-diimine iron complexes, (R',R'')[N,N]FeCl(2) ((R',R'')[N,N] = R'-N=CR' '-CR' '=N-R', where R' = tert-butyl (tBu), cyclohexyl (Cy) and R' ' = phenyl (Ph), para-fluorophenyl (F-Ph), para-bromophenyl (Br-Ph), para-methylphenyl (Me-Ph), or para-methoxyphenyl (MeO-Ph)), are found to polymerize styrene through a catalytic chain transfer (CCT) mechanism. Magnetic moment measurements indicate that Fe(III) complexes containing these ligands possess intermediate (S = 3/2) spin-state iron centers. In contrast, Fe(III) complexes bearing proton (R' ' = H) and para-dimethylaminophenyl (R' ' = NMe(2)-Ph) substituents are high-spin and are efficient atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) catalysts. Hammett plots show a linear correlation of the substituent constant, sigma, with polymerization rate and polymer molecular weight, respectively.

The complexes (RPh[NPN]Ta)2(mu-H)4 (RPh[NPN] = RP(CH2SiMe2NPh)2) activate molecular nitrogen to give (RPh[NPN]Ta)2(mu-eta1-eta2-N2)(mu-H)2; however, addition of hydrazine to (CyPh[NPN]Ta)2(mu-H)4 promotes cleavage of the N-N bond and N-H activation to give the bridging bisimide complex (CyPh[NPN]Ta)2(mu-H)2(mu-NH)2. Substitution of the phosphine substituent from cyclohexyl to phenyl allows for characterization of (PhPh[NPN]Ta)2(mu-H)2(mu-NH)2 crystallographically. Addition of the substituted hydrazine Me2NNH2 results in formation of a mono(nitride) complex, (RPh[NPN]Ta)2(mu-H)3(mu-N). The N-N bond has again been cleaved, but the second nitrogen atom has been functionalized and ejected as Me2NH.
