Abstract

The article discusses the development of a new technique called LaserSAFE, which uses fluorescence confocal microscopy (FCM) to analyze positive surgical margins (PSMs) in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) specimens. The technique involves scanning the entire posterolateral surface of the prostate using a portable laser confocal microscope. Preliminary results show that LaserSAFE has a sensitivity of 87.5% and specificity of 98.1% for diagnosing PSMs, with almost perfect agreement with final pathology analysis. The authors believe that LaserSAFE could be a valuable alternative to the time-consuming and resource-intensive NeuroSAFE technique for margin assessment during RARP. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

In this thesis the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen using gold-palladium supported catalysts is described. The direct route presents a greener and sustainable alternative to the current industrial manufacture process. This work aims to meet industrial requirements set by Solvay® which would make the direct process industrially viable. The drawback preventing the requirements being met is the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen over a catalyst can yield water as well as hydrogen peroxide. Once H2O2 is formed, it can be consumed by either reduction or decomposition. Thus, the rates of the subsequent reactions must be minimized to increase the selectivity and therefore H2O2 concentration to a desirable level. Aspects of the catalyst design and reaction variables have been studied over three results chapters. Firstly, the thermal treatment conditions have been altered, ultimately producing a catalyst with no activity to the H2O2 consumption under standard conditions. Switching off H2O2 hydrogenation was concluded to be due to an increase in Pd2+, isolating active Pd0 species. Secondly, active catalysts to both the synthesis and hydrogenation of H2O2 have been produced with no halide; the addition of halide has been shown to decrease hydrogenation activity while maintaining synthesis activity. Finally, a biphasic solvent system and a constant flow of gases through the reaction medium have been examined in order to produce higher H2O2 concentrations. In the former case H2O2 is extracted in-situ from an immiscible organic phase. The production of a 3 wt% H2O2 solution highlights the potential of such a system. In the latter case a semi-continuous flow reactor is utilised increasing the H2O2 concentration up to ca. 1 wt% (from ca. 0.2 wt%). The reactor allowed H2 selectivity and H2O concentration to be measured as a function of time, thus providing greater insight into catalyst activity.

Abstract

Community-based action research (CBAR) encourages students to view internships and other civic-engagement opportunities as the first steps in collaborative projects that build long-term relationships with community partners and model how democracy works. We marshal longitudinal data, qualitative and quantitative, on both attitudes and behaviors to demonstrate meaningful impacts of community-based work by university students. Our approach to this difficult question involves the use of a treatment group contrasted with two distinct control groups: one situated somewhat closely to the experiences of the treatment group and one more distantly. Despite the difficulty of developing metrics of attitude and behavior change over relatively short periods of time, we achieve leverage on the question of how project pedagogies and experiential learning shape civic attitude formation and associated changed behaviors.

Abstract

ObjectivesTo propose and evaluate a technique for automatic quantification of fissural completeness from chest computed tomography (CT) in a database of subjects with severe emphysema.MethodsNinety-six CT studies of patients with severe emphysema were included. The lungs, fissures and lobes were automatically segmented. The completeness of the fissures was calculated as the percentage of the lobar border defined by a fissure. The completeness score of the automatic method was compared with a visual consensus read by three radiologists using boxplots, rank sum tests and ROC analysis.ResultsThe consensus read found 49% (47/96), 15% (14/96) and 67% (64/96) of the right major, right minor and left major fissures to be complete. For all fissures visually assessed as being complete the automatic method resulted in significantly higher completeness scores (mean 92.78%) than for those assessed as being partial or absent (mean 77.16%; all p values
