2. Fast magnetoacoustic wave trains: from tadpoles to boomerangs

Abstract: Rapidly propagating fast magnetoacoustic wave trains guided by field-aligned plasma non-uniformities are confidently observed in the Sun's corona. Observations at large heights suggest that fast wave trains can travel long distances from the excitation locations. We study characteristic time signatures of fully developed, dispersive fast magnetoacoustic wave trains in field-aligned zero-$\beta$ plasma slabs in the linear regime. Fast wave trains are excited by a spatially localised impulsive driver and propagate along the waveguide as prescribed by the waveguide-caused dispersion. In slabs with steeper transverse density profiles, developed wave trains are shown to consist of three distinct phases: a long-period quasi-periodic phase with the oscillation period shortening with time, a multi-periodic (peloton) phase in which distinctly different periods co-exist, and a short-lived periodic Airy phase. The appearance of these phases is attributed to a non-monotonic dependence of the fast wave group speed on the parallel wavenumber due to the waveguide dispersion, and is shown to be different for axisymmetric (sausage) and non-axisymmetric (kink) modes. In wavelet analysis, this corresponds to the transition from the previously known tadpole shape to a new boomerang shape of the wave train spectrum, with two well-pronounced arms at shorter and longer periods. We describe a specific previously published radio observation of a coronal fast wave train, highly suggestive of a change of the wavelet spectrum from a tadpole to a boomerang, broadly consistent with our modelling. The applicability of these boomerang-shaped fast wave trains for probing the transverse structuring of the waveguiding coronal plasma is discussed., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

3. Projected two- and three-point statistics: Forecasts and mitigation of non-linear RSDs

Abstract: The combination of two- and three-point clustering statistics of galaxies and the underlying matter distribution has the potential to break degeneracies between cosmological parameters and nuisance parameters and can lead to significantly tighter constraints on parameters describing the composition of the Universe and the dynamics of inflation. Here we investigate the relation between biases in the estimated parameters and inaccurate modelling of non-linear redshift-space distortions for the power spectrum and bispectrum of projected galaxy density fields and lensing convergence. Non-linear redshift-space distortions are one of the leading systematic uncertainties in galaxy clustering. Projections along the line of sight suppress radial modes and are thus allowing a trade-off between biases due to non-linear redshift-space distortions and statistical uncertainties. We investigate this bias-error trade-off for a CMASS-like survey with a varying number of redshift bins. Improved modelling of the non-linear redshift-space distortions allows the recovery of more radial information when controlling for biases. Not modelling non-linear redshift space distortions inflates error bars for almost all parameters by 20%. The information loss for the amplitude of local non-Gaussianities is smaller, since it is best constrained from large scales. In addition, we show empirically that one can recover more than 99% of the 3D power spectrum information if the depth of the tomographic bins is reduced to 10 $h^{-1}$Mpc., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. Abstract: PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in May 2013 as a large-class mission for investigating within the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision program a set of important scientific questions that require high resolution, high sensitivity, full-sky observations of the sky emission at wavelengths ranging from millimeter-wave to the far-infrared. PRISM's main objective is to explore the distant universe, probing cosmic history from very early times until now as well as the structures, distribution of matter, and velocity flows throughout our Hubble volume. PRISM will survey the full sky in a large number of frequency bands in both intensity and polarization and will measure the absolute spectrum of sky emission more than three orders of magnitude better than COBE FIRAS. Abstract: PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in response to the Call for White Papers for the definition of the L2 and L3 Missions in the ESA Science Programme. PRISM would have two instruments: (1) an imager with a 3.5m mirror (cooled to 4K for high performance in the far-infrared---that is, in the Wien part of the CMB blackbody spectrum), and (2) an Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) somewhat like the COBE FIRAS instrument but over three orders of magnitude more sensitive. Highlights of the new science (beyond the obvious target of B-modes from gravity waves generated during inflation) made possible by these two instruments working in tandem include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey gathering 10e6 clusters extending to large redshift and measuring their peculiar velocities and temperatures (through the kSZ effect and relativistic corrections to the classic y-distortion spectrum, respectively) (2) a detailed investigation into the nature of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) consisting of at present unresolved dusty high-z galaxies, where most of the star formation in the universe took place, (3) searching for distortions from the perfect CMB blackbody spectrum, which will probe a large number of otherwise inaccessible effects (e.g., energy release through decaying dark matter, the primordial power spectrum on very small scales where measurements today are impossible due to erasure from Silk damping and contamination from non-linear cascading of power from larger length scales). Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form (‘SO-Nominal’) consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating (“Stage 3”) experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. SO will rapidly advance CMB science while informing the design of future observatories such as CMB-S4. Construction of SO-Nominal is fully funded, and operations and data analysis are funded for part of the planned five-year observations. We will seek federal funding to complete the observations and analysis of SO-Nominal, at the $25M level. The SO has a low risk and cost efficient upgrade path – the 6 m LAT can accommodate almost twice the baseline number of detectors and the SATs can be duplicated at low cost. We will seek funding at the $75M level for an expansion of the SO (‘SO-Enhanced’) that fills the remaining focal plane in the LAT, adds three SATs, and extends operations by five years, substantially improving our science return. By this time SO may be operating as part of the larger CMB-S4 project. This white paper summarizes and extends material presented in, which describes the science goals of SO-Nominal, and which describe the instrument design.

PRISM's main objective is to explore the distant universe, probing cosmic history from very early times until now as well as the structures, distribution of matter, and velocity flows throughout our Hubble volume. PRISM will survey the full sky in a large number of frequency bands in both intensity and polarization and will measure the absolute spectrum of sky emission more than three orders of magnitude better than COBE FIRAS. The data obtained will allow usto precisely measure the absolute sky brightness and polarization of all the components of thesky emission in the observed frequency range,separating the primordial and extragalactic components cleanly from the galactic and zodiacal light emissions.The aim of this Extended White Paper is to provide a more detailed overview of the highlightsof the new science that will be made possible by PRISM, which include: (1) the ultimategalaxy cluster survey using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect, detecting approximately 106clusters extending to large redshift, including a characterization of the gas temperature ofthe brightest ones (through the relativistic corrections to the classic SZ template) as wellas a peculiar velocity survey using the kinetic SZ effect that comprises our entire Hubblevolume; (2) a detailed characterization of the properties and evolution of dusty galaxies, wherethe most of the star formation in the universe took place, the faintest population of whichconstitute the diffuse CIB (Cosmic Infrared Background); (3) a characterization of the B modes fromprimordial gravity waves generated during inflation and from gravitational lensing, as wellas the ultimate search for primordial non-Gaussianity using CMB polarization, which is lesscontaminated by foregrounds on small scales than the temperature anisotropies; (4) a searchfor distortions from a perfect blackbody spectrum, which include some nearly certain signalsand others that are more speculative but more informative; and (5) a study of the role of themagnetic field in star formation and its interaction with other components of theinterstellar medium of our Galaxy. These are but a few of the highlights presented herealong with a description of the proposed instrument. Abstract: 20 pages Latex; PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in response to the Call for White Papers for the definition of the L2 and L3 Missions in the ESA Science Programme. PRISM would have two instruments: (1) an imager with a 3.5m mirror (cooled to 4K for high performance in the far-infrared---that is, in the Wien part of the CMB blackbody spectrum), and (2) an Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) somewhat like the COBE FIRAS instrument but over three orders of magnitude more sensitive. Highlights of the new science (beyond the obvious target of B-modes from gravity waves generated during inflation) made possible by these two instruments working in tandem include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey gathering 10e6 clusters extending to large redshift and measuring their peculiar velocities and temperatures (through the kSZ effect and relativistic corrections to the classic y-distortion spectrum, respectively) (2) a detailed investigation into the nature of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) consisting of at present unresolved dusty high-z galaxies, where most of the star formation in the universe took place, (3) searching for distortions from the perfect CMB blackbody spectrum, which will probe a large number of otherwise inaccessible effects (e.g., energy release through decaying dark matter, the primordial power spectrum on very small scales where measurements today are impossible due to erasure from Silk damping and contamination from non-linear cascading of power from larger length scales). These are but a few of the highlights of the new science that will be made possible with PRISM.

Abstract: PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in May 2013 as a large-class mission for investigating within the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision program a set of important scientific questions that require high resolution, high sensitivity, full-sky observations of the sky emission at wavelengths ranging from millimeter-wave to the far-infrared. PRISM's main objective is to explore the distant universe, probing cosmic history from very early times until now as well as the structures, distribution of matter, and velocity flows throughout our Hubble volume. PRISM will survey the full sky in a large number of frequency bands in both intensity and polarization and will measure the absolute spectrum of sky emission more than three orders of magnitude better than COBE FIRAS. The data obtained will allow us to precisely measure the absolute sky brightness and polarization of all the components of the sky emission in the observed frequency range, separating the primordial and extragalactic components cleanly from the galactic and zodiacal light emissions. The aim of this Extended White Paper is to provide a more detailed overview of the highlights of the new science that will be made possible by PRISM, which include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect, detecting approximately 10 6 clusters extending to large redshift, including a characterization of the gas temperature of the brightest ones (through the relativistic corrections to the classic SZ template) as well as a peculiar velocity survey using the kinetic SZ effect that comprises our entire Hubble volume; (2) a detailed characterization of the properties and evolution of dusty galaxies, where the most of the star formation in the universe took place, the faintest population of which constitute the diffuse CIB (Cosmic Infrared Background); (3) a characterization of the B modes from primordial gravity waves generated during inflation and fro

Abstract: PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in response to the Call for White Papers for the definition of the L2 and L3 Missions in the ESA Science Programme. PRISM would have two instruments: (1) an imager with a 3.5m mirror (cooled to 4K for high performance in the far-infrared---that is, in the Wien part of the CMB blackbody spectrum), and (2) an Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) somewhat like the COBE FIRAS instrument but over three orders of magnitude more sensitive. Highlights of the new science (beyond the obvious target of B-modes from gravity waves generated during inflation) made possible by these two instruments working in tandem include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey gathering 10e6 clusters extending to large redshift and measuring their peculiar velocities and temperatures (through the kSZ effect and relativistic corrections to the classic y-distortion spectrum, respectively) (2) a detailed investigation into the nature of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) consisting of at present unresolved dusty high-z galaxies, where most of the star formation in the universe took place, (3) searching for distortions from the perfect CMB blackbody spectrum, which will probe a large number of otherwise inaccessible effects (e.g., energy release through decaying dark matter, the primordial power spectrum on very small scales where measurements today are impossible due to erasure from Silk damping and contamination from non-linear cascading of power from larger length scales). Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. 20. Connecting inflation to observations through the bispectrum

Abstract: Numerically calculating the full primordial bispectrum predicted by a model of inflation and comparing it to what we see in the CMB sky is very computationally intensive, necessitating layers of approximations and limiting the models which can be constrained. The inherent separability of the tree level in-in formalism provides a means by which to obviate some of these difficulties. To exploit this property, one can expand in separable basis functions. The practicality of this method is then determined by the descriptive power of the basis chosen, i.e. by the range of scenarios for which that basis provides a convergent representation of the bispectrum. The central difficulty encountered in obtaining fast convergence is the effect of dominant non-physical k-configurations. A secondary difficulty encountered is accurately including the early-time contributions to the higher-order coefficients (which are necessary to capture feature effects, such as resonance non-Gaussianity). In this thesis we develop this separable, template-free approach into a practical and efficient numerical methodology which can be applied to a much wider and more complicated range of bispectrum phenomenology than previous analyses. This is an important step forward towards observational pipelines which can fully exploit the information contained in the primordial bispectrum to directly confront specific models of inflation. We use our implementation of this pipeline to obtain a constraint on DBI inflation, and validate our implementation by comparing this constraint to an equivalent one obtained by the Planck collaboration.

21. Robust estimation techniques for the cosmological analysis of large scale structure

Abstract: The ΛCDM model of cosmology together with Inflation has had tremendous success over the past 30 years in explaining the increasingly rich data sets of the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. The next generation of large-scale structure surveys is expected to answer many open questions about the microscopic description of the Universe. In order to fully leverage those data sets, one needs exquisite theoretical predictions. Here, the main difficulty is the non-linear nature of the large-scale structure observables which, together with the exquisitely small statistical errors, cause real concern of false discoveries. In this thesis, we study two estimators that allow us to extract non-linear information from the large-scale structure while being robust against one of the leading sources of systematic uncertainties: Redshift-space distortions. By means of a bias relation, we extend the matter counts-in-cells statistic for the first time to neutral hydrogen. Neutral hydrogen is particularly interesting for counts-in-cells statistics because of the vast regions that can be covered by intensity mapping. We find percent-level accuracy when comparing the prediction for the density in spheres probability density function to the IllustrisTNG simulation. The measured density dependent clustering signal, which could be used to break the bias-amplitude degeneracies, matches theoretical expectations. Our bias model is able to capture the effect of redshift-space distortions making the estimator robust. Based on a separation idea, we present an efficient code to compute projected bispectra. The separation approach is orders of magnitude more efficient than the direct integration. This allows us to investigate the relation between biases in the estimated parameters and inaccurate modelling of non-linear redshift-space distortions for the power spectrum and bispectrum of projected galaxy density fields and lensing convergence. For a toy galaxy survey that resembles the CMASS sample of the baryon oscillation spectroscopic survey, we find that modelling non-linear redshift-space distortion only becomes necessary for galaxy bins thinner than 150 Mpc/h. In case a better radial resolution is available, errors on cosmological parameters can be improved by 20% when including an accurate non-linear RSD model that allows us to use bins of depth ∼60 Mpc/h. The separation of projection integrals proves also useful for theoretical uncertainties. We use the separability of Gaussian correlation functions to develop a consistent model for theoretical uncertainties of the projected power spectrum.
