Abstract

Recently, uncertainty-aware methods have attracted increasing attention in semi-supervised medical image segmentation. However, current methods usually suffer from the drawback that it is difficult to balance the computational cost, estimation accuracy, and theoretical support in a unified framework. To alleviate this problem, we introduce the Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence (DST) into semi-supervised medical image segmentation, dubbed Evidential Inference Learning (EVIL). EVIL provides a theoretically guaranteed solution to infer accurate uncertainty quantification in a single forward pass. Trustworthy pseudo labels on unlabeled data are generated after uncertainty estimation. The recently proposed consistency regularization-based training paradigm is adopted in our framework, which enforces the consistency on the perturbed predictions to enhance the generalization with few labeled data. Experimental results show that EVIL achieves competitive performance in comparison with several state-of-the-art methods on the public dataset.

Abstract

Positron emission tomography (PET) reconstruction has become an ill-posed inverse problem due to low-count projection data, and a robust algorithm is urgently required to improve imaging quality. Recently, the deep image prior (DIP) has drawn much attention and has been successfully applied in several image restoration tasks, such as denoising and inpainting, since it does not need any labels (reference image). However, overfitting is a vital defect of this framework. Hence, many methods have been proposed to mitigate this problem, and DeepRED is a typical representation that combines DIP and regularization by denoising (RED). In this article, we leverage DeepRED from a Bayesian perspective to reconstruct PET images from a single corrupted sinogram without any supervised or auxiliary information. In contrast to the conventional denoisers customarily used in RED, a DnCNN-like denoiser, which can add an adaptive constraint to DIP and facilitate the computation of derivation, is employed. Moreover, to further enhance the regularization, Gaussian noise is injected into the gradient updates, deriving a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler. Experimental studies on brain and whole-body datasets demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve better performance in terms of qualitative and quantitative results compared to several classic and state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract

Constructing a globally consistent high-precision map is essential for the application of mobile robots. Existing optimization-based mapping methods typically constrain robot states in pose space during the graph optimization process, without directly optimizing the structure of the scene, thereby causing the map to be inconsistent. To address the above issues, this paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) LiDAR mapping framework (i.e., BA-CLM) based on LiDAR bundle adjustment (LBA) cost factors. We propose a multivariate LBA cost factor, which is built from a multi-resolution voxel map, to uniformly constrain the robot poses within a submap. The framework proposed in this paper applies the LBA cost factors for both local and global map optimization. Experimental results on several public 3D LiDAR datasets and a self-collected 32-line LiDAR dataset demonstrate that the proposed method achieves accurate trajectory estimation and consistent mapping. 10. Mo-Doped LaFeO 3 Gas Sensors with Enhanced Sensing Performance for Triethylamine Gas.

Abstract

Triethylamine is a common volatile organic compound (VOC) that plays an important role in areas such as organic solvents, chemical industries, dyestuffs, and leather treatments. However, exposure to triethylamine atmosphere can pose a serious threat to human health. In this study, gas-sensing semiconductor materials of LaFeO3 nano materials with different Mo-doping ratios were synthesized by the sol–gel method. The crystal structures, micro morphologies, and surface states of the prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, and XPS, respectively. The gas-sensing tests showed that the Mo doping enhanced the gas-sensing performance of LaFeO3. Especially, the 4% Mo-doped LaFeO3 exhibited the highest response towards triethylamine (TEA) gas, a value approximately 11 times greater than that of pure LaFeO3. Meantime, the 4% Mo-doped LaFeO3 sensor showed a remarkably robust linear correlation between the response and the concentration (R2 = 0.99736). In addition, the selectivity, stability, response/recovery time, and moisture-proof properties were evaluated. Finally, the gas-sensing mechanism is discussed. This study provides an idea for exploring a new type of efficient and low-cost metal-doped LaFeO3 sensor to monitor the concentration of triethylamine gas for the purpose of safeguarding human health and safety. 14. Efficacy and safety of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization-lenvatinib sequential therapy for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma: a single-arm clinical study

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Repeated transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) could cause ischemia of the tumor tissue and increases production of angiogenic factors in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Lenvatinib can inhibit the expression of angiogenic factors induced by ischemia after TACE and reduce angiogenesis and tumor recurrence. TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy may improve clinical outcomes. There have been few investigations of TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy for the treatment of unresectable HCC. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy for unresectable HCC. METHODS: From May 2018 to May 2021, 53 consecutive patients who underwent TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy were retrospectively reviewed. Of these, 30 patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected. Lenvatinib treatment started within 1 or 2 weeks after TACE at a dose of 8 or 12 mg once daily. Treatment response was assessed using dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) according to the modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumor (mRECIST). Blood tests were also performed at every response evaluation. Patients with complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) and stable disease (SD) received continuous lenvatinib therapy, and patients with progressive disease (PD) received repeated TACE. The progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and adverse events (AEs) were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: The median age was 58.5±9.1 years, and 16.7% (5/30) of patients were female. A total of 12 patients were categorized as Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) Stage B and 18 were BCLC Stage C. The mean follow-up time was 15.7 months. The ORR was 76.7% (23/30), and the DCR was 96.7% (29/30). The median PFS was 6.1 months, and the median OS was 20.7 months. The most common lenvatinib-related AE was rash, and the most common TACE-related AE was elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST). No treatment-related mortality was observed. CONCLUSIONS: From our findings, TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy may prolong OS and PFS in patients with unresectable HCC, and the side effects are acceptable. The efficacy and safety of the sequential therapy should be confirmed in multiple center randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a large sample and sufficient follow-up period.

Abstract

Community ecology is built on theories that represent the strength of interactions between species as pairwise links. Higher‐order interactions (HOIs) occur when a species changes the pairwise interaction between a focal pair. Recent theoretical work has highlighted the stabilizing role of HOIs for large, simulated communities, yet it remains unclear how important higher‐order effects are in real communities. Here, we used experimental communities of aquatic protists to examine the relationship between HOIs and stability (as measured by the persistence of a species in a community). We cultured a focal pair of consumers in the presence of additional competitors and a predator and collected time series data of their abundances. We then fitted competition models with and without HOIs to measure interaction strength between the focal pair across different community compositions. We used survival analysis to measure the persistence of individual species. We found evidence that additional species positively affected persistence of the focal species and that HOIs were present in most of our communities. However, persistence was only linked to HOIs for one of the focal species. Our results vindicate community ecology theory positing that species interactions may deviate from assumptions of pairwise interactions, opening avenues to consider possible consequences for coexistence and stability.

18. A Compact Single-Phase Cascaded Three-Level AC/DC Converter With Variable DC Bus Voltage and Low CM Noise

Abstract

This article proposes a new topology technology of a two-stage ac/dc converter with variable dc bus voltage control. The technology is a cascaded combination of a new type of single-inductor-based cascaded three-level totem-pole power-factor-correction (PFC) circuit and a three-level LLC half-bridge converter. Although the existing variable dc bus voltage control strategy based on a two-level ac/dc converter exhibits better overall efficiency than fixed dc bus control, it faces problems such as high withstand voltage stress of the power semiconductor device and large inductance volt-second product and filter volume. In order to address these issues, a novel cascaded three-level ac/dc converter with 600 V withstand voltage devices and phase-shift modulation technology is proposed. The new single-inductor-based mirror-symmetric cascaded three-level totem-pole PFC can achieve low common-mode electromagnetic interference without relying on impedance balance. As verification of the proof-of-concept, a hardware prototype of a scale-down 1 kW ac/dc converter is developed. The experimental results show that the converter can operate in an ultrawide battery terminal voltage range of 220–420 V, with a peak efficiency of 96.35%, and a power density of 28% higher than the traditional two-level converter.

Abstract

Routine press conferences nowadays have already become a very common and popular platform for government-media communication in China. This study examines journalists' questions, which constitute an indispensable part in government-media communication, before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis at Chinese press conferences. The focus of the analysis is the variation of "adversarialness" contained in journalists' questions before and after the outbreak of the pandemic crisis. The coding of this study considered the characteristics of Chinese data and was based on a modified version of Clayman and Heritage's widely used coding systems (Clayman & Heritage, 2002; Clayman, Elliott, Heritage & McDonald, 2006) for measuring adversarial questioning in U.S. press conferences. The results show that, there are variations on several indicators of adversarialness and the intensity of the indicators turns out to be different before and after the outbreak of the pandemic. 37. Sulfur atom modulated Fe-Nxspecies embedded in hollow porous carbon spheres for efficient oxygen reduction and high-performance zinc-air batteries

Abstract

A nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doped FeS/FeN-NC-X4(X represents the molar ratio of Fe and S added) catalyst with an abundant S-doped Fe-Nxspecies is designed rationally for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). And these valuable activation sites are embedded into a hollow porous carbon shell for increasing the limiting current density and increasing the onset potential. The precise regulation of the Fe/S ratio also highlights the influence of appropriate S doping on the catalytic performance of atomically dispersed Fe–N–C-based catalysts for high-performance Zinc-air batteries. All of these factors contribute to the remarkable catalytic performance of FeS/FeN-NC-X4for the ORR with a half-wave potential of 0.863 V, which is superior to most non-precious metal catalysts previously reported. Simultaneously, the synthesized material is used as a cathode catalyst to assemble zinc-air batteries to illustrate its practical application. The results show that it has a high open-circuit voltage (1.44 V), extremely high maximum power density (156 mW cm−2) and excellent stability (stable operation for 400 h at a current density of 5 mA cm−2). The assembled portable and flexible batteries also have a high open circuit voltage of 1.40 V and a maximum power density of 68.1 mW cm−2. This work therefore presents a new method for the synthesis of atomically dispersed iron catalysts with high efficiency and metal content that are appropriate for practical energy storage applications.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Radical oligomerization of N-phenylmaleimide (NPMI) was performed in benzylic hydrocarbons as the solvent. The thermally induced oligomerization occurred only above 130 °C, with the initiation attributed to autoxidation of benzylic hydrocarbons as well as formation and dissociation of charge-transfer complexes between benzylic hydrocarbons and maleimides. The end-group analysis on oligo(N-ethylmaleimide) prepared under similar conditions confirmed that the chain transfer to benzylic hydrocarbons was the primary fashion in forming oligomeric chains, and radical telomerization underlaid the oligomerization with benzylic hydrocarbons as both the solvent, the initiator and the telogen. CoII/N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) pairs could catalyze the telomerization at 110 °C. In such a catalytic process, CoII-based oxidative complexes oxidized benzylic hydrocarbons and NHPI into benzylic radicals and phthalimide N-oxyl (PINO), and benzylic hydrocarbons underwent hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to PINO. 40. Evaluation of the antibacterial mechanism and biofilm removal effect of eugenol on Vibrio vulnificusand its application in fresh oysters

Abstract

Eugenol is a natural active substance with high antibacterial activity, but its antibacterial activity against Vibrio vulnificushas not been extensively studied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial and biofilm-clearing abilities and potential mechanisms of eugenol against V. vulnificus, and to provide knowledge for the use of eugenol to prevent oyster contamination. It was found that eugenol had an encouraging antibacterial effect on V. vulnificuswith a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.2 mg/mL. The accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content suggest that oxidative stress is involved in the bactericidal mechanism. Moreover, cell membrane hyperpolarization, changes in cell membrane integrity and morphology suggest that eugenol can reduce the permeability and integrity of cell membranes in V. vulnificus. In addition, eugenol produced a significant biofilm clearance effect on V. vulnificus, as evidenced by the reduced amount of biofilm and the reduction of polysaccharides and viable cells in the biofilm. Finally, eugenol was able to effectively inhibit the activity of V. vulnificusin artificially contaminated oyster at 4 °C and 25 °C. But sensory analysis showed that 0.10% eugenol was most acceptable to trained panelists. All of these highlight the great promise of eugenol as a natural bacteriostatic agent for the food industry.
