2. Random lasers with tunable angular spectra for high contrast imaging

Abstract

Random lasers with low spatial coherence have important potential applications in high quality imaging and displaying. Here, a random laser with tunable angular spectra is proposed and fabricated through directly coupling an asymmetric microcavity with a commercial optical fiber. The designed random laser demonstrates pumping direction-independence property in working threshold, and good storage stability.More importantly, the angular spectrum can be adjusted by pumping different microcavities on the fiber, the output random lasing with ring-shape in momentum space are used as illumination source for biological imaging. An excellent image with speckle-free and higher contrast is achieved due to the low spatial frequency-free of the illumination source even relative to that of the common white lighting. The results indicate that the designed random laser has great application values in the fields of high-resolution biological imaging, integration optics and smart sensing., Comment: 23 pages , 5 figures

9. NAMPT/NAD+/PARP1 Pathway Regulates CFA‐Induced Inflammatory Pain via NF‐κB Signaling in Rodents.

Abstract

Emerging evidence has implicated nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) metabolism in various inflammatory diseases. In the study, the role of NAD+ metabolism in Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA)‐evoked inflammatory pain and the underlying mechanisms are investigated. The study demonstrated that CFA induced upregulation of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) without significant changes in the spinal cord. Inhibition of NAMPT expression by intrathecal injection of NAMPT siRNA alleviated CFA‐induced pain‐like behavior, decreased NAD+ contents in DRG, and lowered poly‐(ADP‐ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) activity levels. These effects are all reversed by the supplement of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). Inhibition of PARP1 expression by intrathecal injection of PARP1 siRNA alleviated CFA‐induced pain‐like behavior, while elevated NAD+ levels of DRG. The analgesic effect of inhibiting NAMPT/NAD+/PARP1 axis can be attributed to the downregulation of the NF‐κB/IL‐1β inflammatory pathway. Double immunofluorescence staining showed that the expression of NAMPT/NAD+/PARP1 axis is restricted to DRG neurons. In conclusion, PARP1 activation in response to CFA stimulation, fueled by NAMPT‐derived NAD+, mediates CFA‐induced inflammatory pain through NF‐κB/IL‐1β inflammatory pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Pregnancy, a complex biological phenomenon, relies on intricate maternal–fetal interactions for success. Decidual natural killer (dNK) cells and trophoblasts are pivotal in establishing immune tolerance at the maternal–fetal interface. The chemokine receptor CXCR4 plays a crucial role in NK cell development and immune tolerance during early placental development. Methods: Primary decidual immune cells from 42 women with normal pregnancies and 20 patients experiencing recurrent spontaneous abortions (RSAs) were studied. Gene transcription in NK cells was assessed using real-time polymerase chain reaction. In a co-culture system, we examined the influence of trophoblasts on CXCR4 expression in dNK cells, with subsequent analysis conducted via flow cytometry. The proportion of CXCR4+ NK cells was assessed using flow cytometry after co-culture with trophoblasts pre-treated with 3-MA or a p53 activator. Results: Our study confirmed a diminished presence of decidual CXCR4+ NK cells in RSA patients during early pregnancy. Co-culturing with a trophoblast-derived supernatant increased CXCR4 expression in dNK cells. In addition, trophoblast autophagy plays an educative role in regulating the dNK landscape via the IGF2-TP53-CXCR4 axis. Conclusion: Autophagy inhibition in trophoblasts induces an aberrant shift in the CXCR4+ dNK phenotype, potentially contributing to pregnancy loss. This sheds light on the nuanced behavior of dNK cells during pregnancy, offering promising therapeutic avenues to mitigate pregnancy complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. An integrated scheme for the management of drifting fish aggregating devices in tuna purse seine fisheries.

Abstract

Drifting fish aggregating devices (dFADs) are extensively used in modern tuna purse seine fisheries. The use of dFADs has greatly improved fishing efficiency and generated substantial economic returns in purse seine fisheries, but adverse impacts on tuna juveniles, associated species and marine ecosystems are still of concern. Based on an analysis of current challenges in dFAD management measures in tuna regional fishery management organisations (t‐RFMOs), we explored opportunities to strengthen dFAD management in tuna fisheries. An integrated dFAD management scheme with multiple tools that account for different usage stages of a dFAD needs to be organised to regulate, track, monitor and recover in tuna purse seine fisheries. We recommend that (1) dFAD‐associated definitions should be standardised to provide operational guidance for dFAD activities; (2) all deployed dFADs should be counted towards dFAD limits on active dFADs, except those reported as lost and abandoned; (3) a regional dFAD tracking and monitoring program should track dFAD paths based on daily position reported to RFMOs directly, in addition to mandatory dFAD marking requirements; and (4) a framework of compensation mechanisms should provide financial support for joint dFAD recovery and eco‐compensation. Abstract

The Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour (WGFTFB) is jointly supported by ICES and FAO, which have fostered a fruitful working relationship in an international forum. The ICES-FAO WGFTFB discusses and reviews research and practices of fishing technology and fish behaviour in relation to commercial and survey gears, and provides guidance for management including, inter alia, the impacts of fishing on the environment. This year’s WGFTFB meeting was sponsored by FAO and organized in collaboration with Shanghai Ocean University (China) and was held from 8 to 12 April 2019. More than 120 fishing technology experts from 23 countries attended the meeting, making this meeting one of the larg-est that WGFTFB has ever held. This annual meeting included a special ICES-FAO WGFTFB symposium and Topic Group meetings. The Symposium on Responsible Fishing Technology for Healthy Ecosystems and Clean Environment included sixty oral and poster presentations on the interaction of fishing gears with the environment and new technological developments in fisheries. A special session was dedicated to Chinese fisheries, its status, challenges and opportunities. Many issues presented were connected to the management of bycatch and ways to reduce discard through improvement of the selectivity of fishing gear; this continues to be the main research activity of the group. Of particular interest were presentations on measures to reduce abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), which has become a major issue worldwide in recent years. For many at the meeting, an insight into the Chinese fisheries was noteworthy, considering how large the Chinese fisheries are on a global scale. The three Topic Groups examined issues relating to passive gear, especially as it pertains to bycatch of protected species, the use of artificial lights for bycatch mitigation, and groundgear for bottom trawls, with a particular focus on seabed impact and fuel use. It is clear from those topics that bycatch and impact of fishing gear on the environment has a high level of interest. There are still many issues facing fishing technologists in areas of fishing impact on the environment and on biodiversity. Modifying fishing gear and/or operational methods that have the least impact on non-target species, especially protected species and their essential habitat requires innovative thinking and research methods in fishing technology. The group members are developing new instruments and analytical methods to enhance our ability to acquire and analyze data to provide better guidance to the industry and management. The key message of the meeting was an urgent need for solutions to mitigate the impact on the environment and reduce the interaction of the fishery with protected species with better fishing technologies using an increasing understanding of the physics of fishing gears and other potential solutions. Challenges also remain on how the management and fishing industry can take advantage of the findings from this group.

49. Hierarchical structured LiMn0.5Fe0.5PO4 spheres synthesized by template-engaged reaction as cathodes for high power Li-ion batteries

Abstract

Porous hierarchical LiMn0.5Fe0.5PO4 spheres were synthesized via a novel template-engaged method using pre-synthesized hollow spherical Li3PO4 as template and FeCl2·4H2O/MnCl2·4H2O as Fe2+/Mn2+ source. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the porous hierarchical spheres exhibit hollow structure and have a size distribution of 0.4-1 um consisting of aggregated approx. 50 nm nanoparticles. A mechanism of the reaction from Li3PO4 to LiMn0.5Fe0.5PO4 was proposed on the basis of the phase and morphology transformation of the intermediates. With the short Li+ diffusion path and porous structure, the carbon coated LiMn0.5Fe0.5PO4 spheres show high specific capacity and superior rate capability with the discharge capacities of 159.3 mA h g-1 at 0.1C and 80.6 mA h g-1 at 20C. The porous hierarchical spheres also exhibit an excellent cycling stability with about 90.7% of the initial value at 1C after 100 cycles.

50. Hydrothermal synthesis, evolution, and electrochemical performance of LiMn0.5Fe0.5PO4 nanostructures

Abstract

LiMn0.5Fe0.5PO4 (LMFP) materials are synthesized by the hydrothermal approach in an organic-free and surfactant-free aqueous solution. The phase and morphological evolution of the material intermediates at different reaction temperatures and times are characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM, respectively. The results show that during temperature increase, the solubility product (Ksp) of the precursors (Li3PO4, Fe3(PO4)2 and (Mn,Fe)3(PO4)2) is the decisive parameter for the precipitation processes. Once the temperature locates at the range of 100-110 °C, the unstable precursors dissolve quickly and then LMFP nuclei are formed, followed by a dissolution-reprecipitation process. As the reaction progresses, the primary particles self-aggregate to form rod or plate particles to reduce the overall surface energy through oriented attachment (OA) and the Ostwald ripening (OR) mechanism. Moreover, the resultant concentration of the precursor significantly affects the crystal size of LMFP by altering the supersaturation degree of solution at the nucleation stage. The carbon coated LMFP nanostructure synthesized at 0.6 mol L-1 (resultant concentration of PO43-) delivers discharge capacities of 155, 100 and 81 mA h g-1 at 0.1, 5 and 20 C rate, respectively. The understanding of nanostructural evolution and its influence on the electrochemical performance will pave a way for a high-performance LMFP cathode.
