Abstract

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of metallic nanoparticles has become an attractive strategy for increasing the efficiency of solar water splitting. However, the metal/semiconductor junction may introduce unwanted interfaces or surface species that reduce the SPR effect as well as compromising efficient charge transport. The processes of separation, transport, and transfer of charges in metal-based plasmonic photoelectrodes are highly sensitive to the nature of the coupling between metal/semiconductor/electrolyte and a comprehensive understanding of these interfaces is still lacking. In this work, we proposed the construction of hematite photoanodes modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and aluminum oxide with different arrangements, whose optimized coupling between the interfaces led to enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Using a combination of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, well-established materials synthesis and x-ray spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and PEC characterization techniques, selected architecture design strategies are evaluated. The experimental results reveal that the direct contact between semiconductors and metals coated by the dielectric leads to an improvement in localized electric field at the interface upon the formation of hot electrons, boosting the generation and separation efficiencies of electron–hole pairs. The main role of the dielectric coating, which led to an ineffective surface state passivation, is to prevent the photooxidation of AuNPs. FDTD calculations are employed to investigate the spatial distribution of the electric-field intensity around the AuNPs deposited onto the hematite surfaces and to corroborate the local field enhancement effect. The outcome of this combined experimental-theoretical study reveals that engineering plasmonic interfaces is a powerful tool to design efficient photoanodes for plasmon-driven PEC water splitting. Abstract

A theoretical and experimental perspective on the role of titanium impurities in hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanostructured photoelectrodes for solar fuel synthesis devices is provided. Titanium incorporation is a known correlate to efficiency enhancement in alpha-Fe2O3 cc photoanodes for solar water oxidation; here the relevant literature and the latest advances are presented and various proposed mechanisms for enhancement are contrasted. Available experimental evidence suggests that Ti incorporation increases net electron carrier concentrations in electrodes, most likely to the extent that (synthesis-dependent) charge compensating cation vacancies are not present. However, electron conductivity increases alone cannot quantitatively account for the large associated photoelectrochemical performance enhancements. The magnitudes of the effects of Ti incorporation on electronic and magnetic properties appear to be highly synthesis-dependent, which has made difficult the development of consistent and general mechanisms explaining experimental and theoretical observations. In this context, we consider how the electronic structure correlates with Ti impurity incorporation in alpha-Fe2O3 a from the perspective of synchrotron-based soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Measurements are performed on sets of electrodes fabricated by five relevant and unrelated chemical and physical techniques. The effects of titanium impurities are reflected in the electronic structure through several universally observed spectral characteristics, irrespective of the synthesis techniques. Absorption spectra at the oxygen K-edge show that Ti incorporation is associated with new oxygen 2p-hybridized states, overlapping with and distorting the known unoccupied Fe 3d-O 2xp band of alpha-Fe2O3. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between serum high-sensitivity C -reaction protein (hs-CRP) and heart fatty acid binding protein (h-FABP) on cardiac accidents in patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP). METHOD: Serum levels of hs-CRP, h-FABP, cardiac troponin-I (cTn-I) and creatine kinase MB isoenzyme (CK-MB) were measured and cardiac accidents within 2 weeks after the test were observed in 74 patients (male 45) with stable AP (SAP) and 56 patients (male 29) with UAP. RESULTS: The incidence of cardiac accidents was significantly higher in UAP group (26.8%) than that in SAP group (10.53%, P < 0.001). Serum hs-CRP [(7.64 +/- 2.18) mg/L vs. (1.78 +/- 0.62) mg/L, P < 0.001], h-FABP [(16.46 +/- 5.28) microg/L vs. (3.15 +/- 2.61) microg/L, P < 0.001] and cTn-I [(1.28 +/- 0.43) microg/L vs. (0.67 +/- 0.09) microg/L, P < 0.001] levels were also significantly higher in UAP group than those in SAP group. The serum hs-CRP and h-FABP levels for patients with cardiac accidents in the SAP group were (6.32 +/- 2.06) microg/L and (8.76 +/- 3.83) microg/L respectively, which were higher than those for the patients having no cardiac accidents in the control (P < 0.01). The serum hs-CRP, h-FABP, cTn-I and CK-MB levels in patients with cardiac accidents were significantly higher than those in patients without cardiac accidents in both SAP and UAP groups. Abstract

This paper presents a documentation of the seasonal and intraseasonal rainfall climatology of summer monsoon rainfall over East Asia, using monthly and 10-d precipitation data from East Asian stations. These data are then related to satellite measurements of longwave radiation and large-scale circulation field. Major rainfall regimes and multiple monsoon onsets are identified, indicating that, in general, monsoon rainfall over East Asia evolves with wavelike progression from north to south from April to September. Abrupt changes in the major rainbands are related to the phase-locking between intraseasonal oscillations found in this study, such as the 40-d and 20-d rainfall fluctuations, and the seasonal monsoon cycle.
