Spiritual assessment and faith integration are essential components of faith-based graduate nursing education. However, there are limited resources on faith integration in the graduate nursing curriculum. The author provides a framework and examples of application of four major concepts that can assist Christian nurse educators to engage students in transformational integration of faith and learning.

Background Modifiable risk factors (MRF) for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) include sedentary behavior, sleep apnea, and loneliness; however, how these MRFs influence one another is unclear. We examined correlations among loneliness, physical activity and sleep apnea among older women at higher risk for AD. Methods Data were collected as part of the Women: Inflammation and Tau Study, which recruits women age 65–85 with higher AD genetic risk and mild impairment on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Participants completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale and home sleep tests to derive the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), a measure of sleep apnea severity. Women wore ActiGraph accelerometers for one week to measure average Moderate-Vigorous Activity per day (MVPA). We used Spearman correlation to examine the relationships among AHI, MVPA and Loneliness Scale score. Results Preliminary data were available for 12 women (mean age=72.4 [SD=2.8], 100% non-Hispanic White). MVPA ranged from 0.3–52.8 minutes (mean=9.38 [SD=14.1]; AHI ranged from 1.5–28.3 (mean=14.0 [SD=9.0] and Loneliness Scale score ranged from 0–34 (mean=9.8 [SD=x]). Significant, positive associations were observed between AHI and Loneliness (rho=.80, p=.006) and a moderate relationship at trend level was notable between higher MVPA and less Loneliness (rho=-9.53, p=.07). AHI did not relate to MVPA. Conclusion Results suggest that loneliness independently relate to both sleep apnea severity and sedentary behavior in older women. Combined interventions that target loneliness in addition to physical activity and sleep may be important in women at-risk for AD.

Background: Cytotoxic therapy increases the risk of clonal hematopoiesis (CH) defined by somatic mutations of cancer-associated genes in blood stem cells. CH is associated with secondary blood cancers and other adverse health events, although the minimum clone size at which these risks become evident and factors that could mitigate them are unknown. To explore these questions, we examined associations of CH patterns with demographic and treatment-related factors using highly sensitive, duplex UMI-based error-corrected sequencing (ECS) of whole blood DNA samples from breast cancer survivors enrolled in the Reach for Health (RFH) study, a 2x2 factorial randomized controlled trial of metformin and weight loss. Methods: Whole blood DNA was isolated from banked samples collected at 2 time points (baseline and 6 months) from 332 RFH participants. Targeted ECS of 70 myeloid malignancy-associated genes was conducted to identify somatic mutations with variant allele frequency (VAF) >0.2%. Likely germline polymorphisms and variants with Results: 1035 mutations in 37 genes were identified across 305 RFH participants (91.9%) of which 78 (23.5%) had a maximum VAF ≥2% and 28 (8%) with maximum VAF ≥10%. 826 mutations were detected at both time points with 102 and 107 found only at baseline or 6-months, respectively. Mutation VAF was highly correlated across time points (R2=0.99). The most frequently mutated gene was DNMT3A in 68% of RFH participants followed by TET2, PPM1D, TP53, and ASXL1. Mean number of mutations per individual was 3.1 (range 0-19), which increased with age. The mean number of mutations was significantly lower in RFH participants who prior to study enrollment received no cytotoxic therapy (1.4) compared to chemotherapy alone (2.6), radiation alone (2.6), or both (3.0) with p-values of 0.0467, 0.0093, and 0.0002, respectively. RFH participants who had received both chemotherapy and radiation were more likely to have mutations in PPM1D and TP53 compared to participants who had received neither treatment (Χ2 p-values Conclusions: Our findings show that CH is extremely common among breast cancer survivors at VAF > 0.2%, and that prevalence of CH and mean number of mutations increases with age. Higher-risk mutations in PPM1D and TP53 were enriched in RFH participants who had received both chemotherapy and radiation, as were mutations with greater VAF. Citation Format: Soo J. Objective: Veterans evaluated at the WRIISC present with multiple and chronic health conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pain, and fatigue. These patients often experience poor symptom relief. A pilot project was designed to determine whether such veterans would practice yoga as an adjunct to conventional medical care. We also used a range of standard screening measures to examine the health profile of individuals. Methods: Veterans were referred by VA clinicians to a WRIISC yoga clinic established in 2009. Two classes were offered per week. Veterans were assessed at baseline and after 12 classes with the PTSD Ch ecklist (PCL), Short F orm McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-12), and the Flinders Fatigue Scale (FFS). Results: There have been 293 patient referrals so far and more than 1,824 yoga contact hours. Detailed data were collected on 10 veterans age 53–85 yrs (6 males). The screening instruments revealed nonsignificant benefits of yoga across the classes (p > .05). Furthermore, the PCL scores showed that four patients (40%) screened positive for PTSD (mean severity score = 40.9, range = 18–70). In addition, the PCL showed positive correlations with measures of pain (FS-12; Spearman’s rho = .76, p < .01), and chronic fatigue (FFS; Spearman’s rho = .94, p < .001). Similar results were found for equivalent correlations after 12 yoga classes. Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrates that veterans accept yoga as a complementary treatment to their regular medical care. Of possible significance is the observation that 40% of the patients screened positive for PTSD. The reasons for this are not clear but may be because such patients were referred at a higher rate. It is also possible that PTSD patients seek out yoga classes as an effective means of treating their symptoms. The strong correlations between measures of PTSD, pain, and fatigue suggest far-reaching implications for the integration of yoga in the treatment of veterans with a broad array of disorders exacerbated by stress. 2. Yoga-based Psychotherapy Group With Urban Youth Exposed to Trauma

Strategies for constructing and maintaining cross-disciplinary teams are in their infancy. We outline strategies to support one form, transdisciplinary research, in a major initiative of the National Cancer Institute, the Transdisciplinary Research in Energetics and Cancer 2 (TREC2) initiative. Discussion of the TREC2 sites’ experiences with transdisciplinarity is structured around a conceptual model that identifies four iterative phases of transdisciplinary research. An active coordination center, regular face-to-face meetings, and input from external advisors were instrumental in moving TREC2 to the translation phase. The possibilities for advancements in the science of energetics and cancer increased as investigator ties became denser. TREC2 can be seen as a flagship effort in transdisciplinary science that provides lessons on moving ideas from development to translation.
