Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an epidemic among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people. However, intimate partner homicide (IPH) among TGD people is under researched. Thus, thematic content analysis was used to describe and examine antecedents of severe assault and IPH among TGD adults who have experienced IPV (N = 13), via community listening sessions. While some themes resembled known severe assault and IPH risks among cisgender women, several themes were unique to TGD people and should be considered when safety planning with TGD individuals or adapting IPV screening tools for this population. Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common sequela to military sexual trauma (MST) among women veterans. Yoga has shown promise in research examining its benefit for symptoms and sequela of PTSD. Aims: The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) for women veterans with PTSD related to MST. Method: In this feasibility study, the final sample included women veterans (n = 41) with PTSD related to MST accessing health care in a Veterans Affairs Health Care System in the southeast United States; the majority were African American (n = 33; 80.5%). Interventions used established protocols of 10 weekly sessions of group TCTSY versus 12 weekly sessions of group Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). PTSD was assessed via clinical interview and participant report. Additional data collection included multiple participant-reported outcomes commonly associated with PTSD and psychophysiological measures. We also collected data regarding participant satisfaction and feasibility-related feedback from participants and providers. Results: Feasibility and acceptability were evaluated via demand, practicality, fidelity, and acceptability. This was measured by expressed interest, attendance, program completion, barriers to care and satisfaction with treatment, and satisfaction with interventions and data collection. Conclusions: Results indicate the RCT design and TCTSY implementation were feasible; a full-scale RCT was subsequently conducted to determine efficacy of the experimental intervention. Introduction: Existing literature suggests that transgender women (TW) may be at high risk for adverse mental health due to stress attributed to combined experiences of stigma and complex social and structural vulnerabilities. Little research has examined how these co‐occurring experiences relate to mental health. We aimed to test a theoretically driven conceptual model of relationships between stigma, social and structural vulnerabilities, and mental health to inform future intervention tailoring. Design/Methods: Partial least square path modeling followed by response‐based unit segmentation was used to identify homogenous clusters in a diverse community sample of United States (US)‐based TW (N = 1418; 46.2% White non‐Hispanic). This approach examined associations between latent constructs of stigma (polyvictimization and discrimination), social and structural vulnerabilities (housing and food insecurity, unemployment, sex work, social support, and substance use), and mental health (post‐traumatic stress and psychological distress). Results: The final conceptual model defined the structural relationship between the variables of interest within stigma, vulnerability, and mental health. Six clusters were identified within this structural framework which suggests that racism, ethnicism, and geography may be related to mental health inequities among TW. Conclusion: Our findings around the impact of racism, ethnicism, and geography reflect the existing literature, which unfortunately shows us that little change has occurred in the last decade for TW of color in the Southern US; however, the strength of our evidence (related to sampling structure and sample size) and type of analyses (accounting for co‐occurring predictors of health, i.e., stigma and complex vulnerabilities, reflecting that of real‐world patients) is a novel and necessary addition to the literature. Findings suggest that health interventions designed to offset the negative effects of stigma must include anti‐racist approaches with components to reduce or eliminate barriers to resources that contribute to social and structural vulnerabilities among TW. Herein we provide detailed recommendations to guide primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention efforts. Clinical Relevance: This study demonstrated the importance of considering stigma and complex social and structural vulnerabilities during clinical care and design of mental health interventions for transgender women who are experiencing post‐traumatic stress disorder and psychological distress. Black transgender women are disproportionately affected by violence and poor care-delivery, contributing to poor mental health. Little is known regarding the effect of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) community connection (TCC) on health. This analysis (a) explores relationships between TCC, polyvictimization, and mental health and (b) analyzes how TCC influenced help-seeking following violent experiences among Black transgender women. Mixed-methods data from 19 Black transgender women were analyzed using correlational and thematic content analyses. Findings suggest that TCC is associated with improved help-seeking and mental health among Black transgender women, highlighting a need for longitudinal research to identify approaches for leveraging TCC. Violent victimization and substance use are higher among sexual minority cisgender women (SMCW) than heterosexual cisgender women. Unknown, however, is how polyvictimization—experiencing multiple types of violent victimization—affects substance use among SMCW. Purpose/Objectives: This study explores the relationship between polyvictimization and substance use among a small sample of SMCW. Methods: An exploratory secondary data analysis was conducted on data from a convenience sample of 115 SMCW currently in relationships (70.4% lesbian, 73.9% non-Hispanic white) via a cross-sectional survey. Lifetime physical, sexual, and crime-related violent victimization were measured via the Trauma History Questionnaire. Past-year substance use was measured via the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-10). Mann-Whitney U testing and linear regression modeling were used to examine differences in substance use by victimization status (victimized/non-victimized) and the association between polyvictimization and substance use. Results: Lifetime prevalence of violent victimization was high with 60.9% of the sample reporting at least one type of victimization: 10.4% experienced physical, 22.6% experienced sexual, and 22.6% experienced crime-related violent victimization. Substance use was significantly greater for victimized participants than non-victimized participants. Modeling showed that as violent victimization increased by one unit, substance use scores increased by.30 units. Conclusion/Importance: Preliminary evidence suggests that increase in violent victimization was associated with increased substance use among SMCW. Findings indicate a need for additional confirmatory research with more representative samples and longitudinal data. Behavioral health practitioners are urged to consider the implications of these findings and assess for past cumulative violence and current risk of substance use disorder, to appropriately facilitate treatment planning. ABSTRACT Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and other diverse sexual orientations and gender identity groups (LGBTQ+) face high rates of poor mental health. In the most severe and emergent of instances, inpatient psychiatric care may be required. LGBTQ+ people report experiences of mistreatment in healthcare settings broadly, such as denial of healthcare services and harassment from healthcare providers and other patients. However, little is known about the experiences of LGBTQ+ people in inpatient psychiatric care settings, specifically. The purpose of this review was to assess the existing literature for descriptions of LGBTQ+ people's experiences within inpatient psychiatric care. We searched multiple databases (i.e., PubMed, PsychINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science and Google Scholar) for peer‐reviewed articles that described the experiences of LGBTQ+ people within inpatient psychiatric care that were published in English. The included articles (N = 14) were analysed using a conceptual model of stigma and organised within those strata (structural, interpersonal and individual stigma) across the inpatient experience, (admission, inpatient unit, and discharge). Themes identified included: noninclusive intake tools and pervasive misgendering during the admission process; lack of healthcare infrastructure, inadequate training and lack of cultural humility, pervasive discrimination and victimization, silencing of LGBTQ+ patients, and feelings of fear and shame while on inpatient units, and lack of community resources during the discharge process. Clinicians should consider the perspectives and experiences of LGBTQ+ people to enact identity‐affirming care practices that may increase mental healthcare engagement and improve long‐term mental health outcomes. The nursing workforce must provide evidence‐based affirming, inclusive and culturally responsive care for SGD people to meet individual and community health needs and eliminate disparities.The purpose of this scoping review was to synthesise what is known about (1) nurses' knowledge, skills and attitudes related to caring for SGD people in the US and (2) the existence, development and evaluation of SGD‐related educational offerings available to practicing nurses in the US to develop the knowledge and skills needed to promote the health and wellbeing of SGD individuals, families and communities.This review followed the scoping review methodology and PRISMA for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR).In conjunction with a health librarian, an electronic literature search was conducted using PubMed, LGBT Health, CINAHL, ERIC and Health Source‐Nursing.Thirty‐two studies were included in this review, including quantitative and qualitative studies that sought to understand the knowledge, attitudes and clinical experiences of nurses related to the care of SGD people; studies that tested educational interventions and studies that identified educational barriers and facilitators. Major gaps in education, practice and research, as well as methodological limitations of existing studies, were noted.Nurses would benefit from expanded access to effective standardised foundational SGD‐related health continuing education to help prepare them to care for diverse patient populations. Equity, inclusivity and dignity are key values of the nursing profession. It is imperative that nurses have the knowledge and skills to apply these values consistently in day‐to‐day professional practice across populations and settings.There is an urgent need to develop standardised, easily accessible evidence‐based educational content to address nurses' knowledge of and attitudes towards caring for SGD people.This study adhered to the PRISMA‐ScR reporting guidelines.There was no patient or public contribution to this study. Purposeful peer facilitation is a key ingredient for successful Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL). The peer facilitation model has successfully been applied in several different contexts, and can have a profound effect on individual, community, and societal change. Effective Peer Leaders must learn to create space, understand and address social determinants of learning, and nourish the potential of peers. Herein, we describe key attributes of effective Peer Leaders, discuss the application of peer facilitation in various settings across individual, community, and societal domains, and provide recommendations for the real-world application of the peer facilitation model.

Background: To improve health equity, nursing curricula should include content specific to the needs of marginalized and underserved communities, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex groups (LGBTQI+). Harmful and absent academic discussions of LGBTQI+ patients lead to provider discomfort and inadequacy in treating this patient population. Nursing schools are well-positioned to increase comfort with LGBTQI+ content as part of pre-licensure curricula. This article presents a systematic evaluation of LGBTQI+ content in nursing pre-licensure textbooks and the nature and quality of the representations., Methods: A qualitative descriptive analysis of LGBTQI+ content from 14 nursing-specific textbooks required by a pre-licensure degree program at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing was conducted by a student-led team with faculty oversight. A priori and iterative search terms were used to identify and extract text segments that referenced LGBTQI+ content in each textbook. An iterative codebook was developed, codes were applied, and analysis of the information and context in which the terms were presented was performed., Results: The research team observed gaps and notable patterns in distribution of LGBTQI+ terms and health content areas across the textbooks reviewed. The majority of LGBTQI+ search terms were identified in the following health content areas: social determinants of health, sexual/reproductive health, pediatric sexual & gender diversity, intersectionality, and infectious disease. Based on qualitative descriptive analyses, the data were organized into the following categories: a) Language; b) Medicalization; c) Vague, Incomplete, or Lacking Specificity; and d) Comprehensive Approach., Conclusion: Findings highlight the need for increased academic exposure for pre-licensure nursing students regarding the care of LGBTQI+ patients. Thoughtful inclusion of LGBTQI+ content may better foster the delivery of evidence-based care for this patient population. Background: In the US, sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals continue to experience health inequities, and nursing curricula content and nursing faculty with SGM health expertise in the US remain limited. Addressing health disparities begins with the preparation of future nurses-US nursing faculty must be supported to meet these growing needs., Purpose: To describe, appraise, and synthesize research from 2000-2020 on US nursing faculty knowledge, awareness, inclusion, and perceived importance of SGM health content., Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we registered a systematic review and appraisal protocol in PROSPERO, and then executed the protocol and synthesized the literature., Discussion: We found an empirical evidence base surrounding US nursing faculty and SGM health much more limited than expected. Only four cross-sectional, descriptive empirical articles fit the a priori inclusion criteria. The studies were of moderate quality at best and often relied on unvalidated or older measures. In general, the studies focused on examining characteristics of nursing programs, faculty comfort with content, faculty perceptions of content importance, and hours dedicated to content., Conclusion: Since the close of the review, new commentaries and editorials expanding the call for change in the US were published-the time for commentary has passed. It remains unclear whether US nursing faculty are adequately prepared to educate future nurses about SGM health issues-and an unprepared healthcare workforce is yet another barrier to SGM health equity. Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer plus (LGBTQ) people experience discrimination and health disparities compared to heterosexual cisgender people. Clinicians report discomfort and insufficient preparation for providing care to LGBTQ people and nursing has been slow to integrate LGBTQ health into curricula., Purpose: Conduct a systematic review to examine and critically appraise peer-reviewed literature on nursing student knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) regarding LGBTQ health and the development/evaluation of LGBTQ health content in nursing curricula., Methods: A systematic review was conducted (N = 1275 articles from PubMed, LGBT Health, CINAHL, ERIC, and Health Source-Nursing/Academic Edition)., Findings: Twenty articles met inclusion criteria. Twelve studies described curricular interventions; however, there were few validated tools to evaluate content coverage or KSAs. Four themes emerged specific to LGBTQ health content inclusion., Discussion: While an emerging science of LGBTQ nursing education has been identified, more work is needed to build and evaluate a comprehensive curricular approach for full programmatic integration of LGBTQ health., Conclusion: As nursing programs build LGBTQ content into nursing curricula, care must be taken to integrate this content fully with the depth of curricular content in population health, social determinants of health, social justice, intersectionality, cultural competence, and political advocacy., Tweetable Abstract: Greater integration of LGBTQ health content into nursing education should be a priority for nursing education., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Objectives and Design: Information about providing professional and appropriate perinatal care to transgender men in the perinatal setting is scarce, and healthcare providers often have insufficient knowledge or skills to provide this care. In response, a quality improvement educational program for nursing staff was developed and implemented, with the goal of evaluating the impact of this intervention on nurses' knowledge, skills, and attitudes when caring for pregnant transgender men., Setting and Participants: The training was offered to nursing staff of a 24-bed inpatient perinatal unit at a large, private academic medical center in a major East Coast city during the unit's quarterly staff meeting in March 2020., Intervention: The training covered the provision of affirming and inclusive perinatal care for transgender men. The content of the training was based on recommendations in the literature and reviewed by content experts., Measurements: Pre-test (N = 55) and post-test (N = 23) online self-administered surveys assessed nursing staff's knowledge of, comfort, and interest in providing gender affirming care for transgender men. Mann-Whitney U and Fischer's exact tests were used to determine significant changes in knowledge and attitudes over time., Findings: Findings suggest the training improved nursing staff's self-reported knowledge and skills in providing gender affirming care to pregnant transgender men over time, with participants demonstrating improved knowledge about communication around pronouns, gender identity, reproductive systems, and obstetric history. Awareness of resources for both professional development and to refer transgender patients also improved. However, persistent deficits in other knowledge, skills, and attitudes remained, suggesting that nurses would likely benefit from further support and training in transgender-specific health issues., Key Conclusions and Implications for Practice: Findings support the utility of unit-based training in improving affirming and inclusive care in the perinatal setting. Objective: The study objective was to explore the preliminary efficacy of trauma-sensitive yoga compared to cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for women Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to military sexual trauma (MST) in a pilot randomized control trial (RCT). We then compared these results to published interim results for the subsequent full-scale RCT., Method: The analytic sample included women Veterans (N = 41) with PTSD related to MST accessing healthcare in a southeastern Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The majority were African American, non-Hispanic (80.5 %). The protocol-driven group interventions, Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY; n = 17) and the evidence-based control condition, CPT (n = 24), were delivered weekly for 10 and 12 sessions, respectively. Multilevel linear models (MLM) were used to compare changes over time between the two groups., Results: The primary outcomes presented here are PTSD symptom severity and diagnosis, assessed using the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) and the PTSD Symptom Checklist (PCL) total scores. PTSD symptom severity on both clinician-administered (CAPS) and self-reported (PCL) measures, improved significantly (p < .005) over time, with large within group effect sizes (0.90-0.99) consistent with the subsequent RCT. Participants in the TCTSY group showed clinically meaningful improvements earlier than the CPT group participants from baseline on the CAPS and PCL Total scores., Conclusions: Results support published findings of the effectiveness of TCTSY in the treatment for PTSD related to MST among women Veterans, particularly African American women. TCTSY warrants consideration as an adjunctive, precursor, or concurrent treatment to evidence-based psychotherapies. Purpose: Gender minority (GM) (people whose gender does not align with the sex assigned at birth) people have historically been insured at lower rates than the general population. The purpose of this review is to (1) assess the prevalence of health insurance among GM adults in the United States, (2) examine prevalence by gender, and (3) examine trends in prevalence before and after implementation of the Affordable Care Act., Methods: Published articles from PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases before April 26th, 2019, were included. This review is registered on PROSPERO (CRD42019133627). Analysis was guided by a random-effects model to obtain a meta-prevalence estimate for all GM people and stratified by gender subgroup. Heterogeneity was assessed using a Q -test and I 2 measure., Results: Of 55 included articles, a random pooled estimate showed that 75% GM people were insured (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.71-0.79; p <0.001). Subgroup analysis by gender determined 70% of transgender women (95% CI: 0.64-0.76; p <0.001; I 2 =97.16%) and 80% of transgender men (95% CI: 0.77-0.83; p =0.01; I 2 =54.51%) were insured. Too few studies provided health insurance prevalence data for gender-expansive participants (GM people who do not identify as solely man or woman) to conduct analysis., Conclusion: The pooled prevalence of health insurance among GM people found in this review is considerably lower than the general population. Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM; people whose sexual orientation is not heterosexual or whose gender identity varies from what is traditionally associated with the sex assigned to them at birth) people experience high rates of trauma and substantial disparities in anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Exposure to traumatic stressors such as news related to COVID-19 may be associated with symptoms of anxiety and PTSD., Objective: This study aims to evaluate the relationship of COVID-19 news exposure with anxiety and PTSD symptoms in a sample of SGM adults in the United States., Methods: Data were collected between March 23 and August 2, 2020, from The PRIDE Study, a national longitudinal cohort study of SGM people. Regression analyses were used to analyze the relationship between self-reported news exposure and symptoms of anxiety using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and symptoms of COVID-19-related PTSD using the Impact of Events Scale-Revised., Results: Our sample included a total of 3079 SGM participants. Each unit increase in COVID-19-related news exposure was associated with greater anxiety symptoms (odds ratio 1.77, 95% CI 1.63-1.93; P<.001) and 1.93 greater odds of PTSD (95% CI 1.74-2.14; P<.001)., Conclusions: Our study found that COVID-19 news exposure was positively associated with greater symptoms of anxiety and PTSD among SGM people. This supports previous literature in other populations where greater news exposure was associated with poorer mental health. Background: There is a lack of comprehensive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) content in pre-licensure nursing curricula. LGBTQI+ people commonly experience mistreatment from nurses and healthcare providers due to a lack of knowledge or personal biases. To date, few instruments exist to guide LGBTQI+-specific curricular improvement., Objectives/design/setting/participant/methods: Johns Hopkins School of Nursing LGBTQI+ Health Initiative and Emory University School of Nursing developed the Tool for Assessing LGBTQI+ Health Training (TALHT) to assist in evaluating gaps and redundancies in LGBTQI+ health content within pre-licensure nursing curricula. Face and content validity were evaluated among experts in LGBTQI+ health, curricular development, nursing education, and measure development (N = 22). The TALHT was modified based on expert feedback and a pilot with pre-licensure faculty (N = 13) to evaluate utility and acceptability of the refined measure., Results: Face and content validity evaluation of the 60-item iteration of the TALHT showed that the majority of items were consistently relevant among external expert reviewers. However, the clarity and readability of items were lacking. We triangulated the quantitative and qualitative data from experts to adapt and reduce the number of items in the TALHT to 20 items. Pilot testing of the revised 20-item measure found that utility and acceptability of the tool were rated highly among pre-licensure faculty., Conclusion: The validation of the TALHT comes at a time when this type of instrument is clearly needed. The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report calls for nursing education to incorporate competencies in caring for diverse populations to promote health equity. The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education calls for a transition to operationalization of competency-based nursing education. Background: Compared to cisgender peers, transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people experience significant health disparities associated with discrimination and limited access to appropriate care in healthcare settings. Nurses represent the largest segment of the United States (US) healthcare workforce; however, US nursing programs only dedicate approximately 2.12 h to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and TGD (LGBT)-related content., Objectives/design/setting/participants: To fill the gap in TGD-related nursing education, the Transgender Curriculum Integration Project (TCIP) developed and integrated an evidence-based curriculum specific to TGD health into the pre-licensure accelerated Bachelor's in Nursing Science (BSN) program at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. The purpose of this study was to assess the preliminary efficacy and feasibility (i.e., attrition, engagement, acceptability) of the TCIP in improving the TGD-related health knowledge and attitudes among a sample of pre-licensure nursing students., Methods: TCIP utilized a self-administered online survey to assess students' knowledge and attitudes about TGD health prior to (time point 1) and following (time points 2 and 3) the integration of TGD-specific content into five nursing pre-licensure courses. Rank-based nonparametric testing using Kruskal-Wallis H and Mann-Whitney U were conducted to determine if there were statistically significant differences in responses between the three time points. Thematic content analysis was used to determine themes present among short answers., Results: Findings indicate TGD-specific content improved student's gender sensitivity overtime, with improvements in self-reported skills in providing care for TGD people and knowledge of additional TGD-specific resources. However, gender sensitivity remains low among student's and students requested more TGD content suggesting room for further improvement., Conclusions: Findings support the efficacy of TCIP and highlight complexities of curricular change that can guide future curricular integration and evaluation in nursing programs nation-wide., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors.
