Abstract

Gynaecological conditions (e.g., endometriosis, PCOS) result in bodily changes that negatively impact body image. Psychological interventions (e.g., CBT, psychoeducation) have shown promise in reviews with the general population for alleviating body image concerns. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide asynthesis of the impact of psychological interventions for reducing body image concerns for individuals with gynaecological conditions. Electronic databases were searched for relevant psychological intervention studies with body image outcomes. Twenty-one eligible studies were included in the systematic review (ten were included in a random-effects meta-analysis). Studies included participants (N = 1483, M = 71.85, SD = 52.79) with a range of gynaecological conditions, ages (Mage = 35.08, SD = 12.17) and cultural backgrounds. Most included studies reported at least one positive effect with the meta-analysis indicating psychological interventions were moderately superior to control conditions for reducing body image concerns (SMD -.41, 95% CI [−0.20 −0.62]). However, there was a high risk of bias and moderate heterogeneity. Results suggest psychological interventions may hold promise for reducing body image concerns among individuals gynaecological conditions in the short term. Further, preliminary support was found for the use of theory-guided psychological interventions delivered in group settings in particular, with further research needed on optimal intervention length and particular psychotherapeutic approach. 44. Do High Stakes Tests Drive Up Student Dropout Rates? Myths versus Reality. Knowledge Brief.

Abstract

This report proposes that not enough good data or research has been done to settle the debate over whether testing affects high school dropout rates. Advocates argue that the threat of missing out on a diploma or of being retained motivates students to work harder, resulting in higher academic achievement. Critics argue that failing a high school exam, being retained, or anticipating such failure can push students over the academic edge, causing them to quit school. Problems with understanding the dropout issue include inconsistencies with how dropouts are defined and reported. Testing produces information that is limited in both scope and analytical methodology. While some studies suggest broad reasons for dropping out, such as not liking school or not getting along with teachers, no causal connection has been revealed between any single factor and the decision to quit school. The report recommends that negative unintended consequences of high-stakes test programs be disclosed, that keeping accurate dropout data is important, and that states allow a fair phase-in program to allow for alignment of curriculum, teaching practice, and assessment. Research recommendations include doing more credible and extensive data collection, and implementing more longitudinal studies and causal research. (Contains 38 references.) (RT)

This directory provides brief descriptions and contact information for indigenous education resources in four Western states: Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. The first section lists national associations, organizations, clearinghouses, and centers concerned with American Indian education and based in one of the four states. Sections on each of the four states list federally recognized tribes, American Indian centers, state government agencies and organizations, postsecondary institutions and related organizations, elementary and secondary schools and related organizations, American Indian media, museums and parks, Head Start programs, child care programs, Title IX Indian education programs, and Johnson O'Malley contractors. The California section also lists non-federally recognized tribes, California Department of Education Indian education centers by county, and early childhood education programs. (SV)

49. Community-Led Initiatives in Curriculum Development.

Abstract

Educational curricula have often been shaped more by worldwide standards and modern values than by national or regional influences and may, in some cases, be irrelevant to student and local community needs. This paper explores ways in which curricula can be adapted to a region's specific, social, political, and regional conditions. It begins with a review of the literature on the philosophical context and process of adapting curricula, and then examines several case studies illustrating local community input into curriculum development. These include the introduction of western education into societies in Africa; the Balochistan Instructional Materials Development and Training Cells (BIMDTC) project to produce primary-level curriculum materials in Pakistan; and the Gonoshahajjo Sangstha, a non-governmental organization in Bangladesh, established to facilitate the social mobilization of the poor through literacy and education. The paper concludes with a discussion of strategic approaches to school reform, including local input regarding education reform and school clusters. (Contains 31 references.) (ND)
