Soil's hydraulic properties are an essential characteristic that influences the hydrologic cycle by influencing infiltration and runoff and the transport of soil water and salt in the process of vegetation rehabilitation in coastal saline soils. To date, few studies have specifically addressed the soil's hydraulic properties and root–soil interactions of coastal saline soil under revegetation. This study aimed to identify the unique hydraulic characteristics of soil, the pore size distribution parameter, Gardner α, and the different contributions of soil's physical properties and vegetation's root morphological characteristics with regard to soil infiltration. For this purpose, disc infiltration experiments at different pressure heads were performed on three vegetation types, Salix matsudana (SM), Hibiscus syriacus (HC), and Sabina vulgaris (SV), after two years of vegetation rehabilitation. The results demonstrated that the initial and steady infiltration rate, Gardner α, and soil porosity fraction exhibit significant differences among the three plant species. A correlation analysis indicated that the soil water content, surface area, density, and dry weight of roots had inverse relationships with soil infiltration at heads of pressure of 0 cm and 9 cm. The regulation of soil infiltration was influenced by the root dry weight and root average diameter, which played crucial roles in determining the roots' morphological properties and the formation of pathways and soil pores. Elevated CO2 (eCO2) is one of the climate changes that may benefit plant growth under emerging soil contaminants such as heavy metals. In this regard, the morpho‐physiological mechanisms underlying the mitigating impact of eCO2 on beryllium (Be) phytotoxicity are poorly known. Hence, we investigated eCO2 and Be interactive effects on the growth and metabolism of two species from different groups: cereal (oat) and legume (alfalfa). Be stress significantly reduced the growth and photosynthetic attributes in both species, but alfalfa was more susceptible to Be toxicity. Be stress induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation by increasing photorespiration, subsequently resulting in increased lipid and protein oxidation. However, the growth inhibition and oxidative stress induced by Be stress were mitigated by eCO2. This could be explained, at least partially, by the increase in organic acids (e.g., citric acid) released into the soil, which subsequently reduced Be uptake. Additionally, eCO2 reduced cellular oxidative damage by reducing photorespiration, which was more significant in alfalfa plants. Furthermore, eCO2 improved the redox status and detoxification processes, including phytochelatins, total glutathione and metallothioneins levels, and glutathione‐S‐transferase activity in both species, but to a greater extend in alfalfa. In this context, eCO2 also stimulated anthocyanin biosynthesis by accumulating its precursors (phenylalanine, coumaric acid, cinnamic acid, and naringenin) and key biosynthetic enzymes (phenylalanine ammonia‐lyase, cinnamate hydroxylase, and coumarate:CoA ligase) mainly in alfalfa plants. Overall, this study explored the mechanistic approach by which eCO2 alleviates the harmful effects of Be. Nickel (Ni) stress adversely affects plant growth and biomass accumulation, posturing severe menace to crop production and food security. The current study aimed to determine the putative role of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) in mitigating Ni‐induced phytotoxicity and identify the underlying defense mechanisms in maize, which are poorly understood. Our findings showed that SNP significantly augmented plant growth, biomass, and photosynthesis‐related attributes (Fv/Fm, Fm, qP ETR, and ΦPSII) through diminishing Ni uptake and translocation in root and shoot tissues of maize under Ni stress conditions. In parallel, exogenous SNP substantially relieved maize seedlings from Ni‐induced stress by enhancing enzymatic (SOD, CAT, and GPX) and non‐enzymatic (phenol and flavonoids) antioxidant defenses and reducing oxidative stress indicators (MDA and H2O2). The results revealed that SNP treatment increased the content of organic osmolyte glycine betaine and the activity of GST, concomitantly with ATP and ionic exchange capacity (including Ca2+‐ATPase and Mg2+‐ATPase), advocating its sufficiency to promote plant growth and avert Ni‐induced stress in maize plants. The only exception was the production of organic acids (citric, oxalic, malic, and formic acids), which was reduced as SNP treatment relieved maize seedlings from Ni‐induced oxidative damage. The application of SNP also displayed higher expression of defense‐ and detoxifying‐related genes than in control treatments. Together, our data highlighted the mechanism involved in the amelioration of Ni toxicity by SNP; thus, suggesting a potential role of SNP in mitigating the adverse effects of Ni‐contaminated soils to boost growth and yield of crop plants, that is, maize. Overgrazing leads to the degradation of grazing lands, which seriously threatens the stability of grassland ecosystems. Root-invading fungi, as one of the main influencing factors, can cause plant diseases in grasslands, reduce the proportion of dominant plant species, increase the proportion of invasive poisonous weeds, and further aggravate degradation. In order to predict and improve the effects of root-invading fungi on grassland degradation, we conducted an in situ soil indoor control experiment using soils collected from non-degraded, moderately degraded, and severely degraded areas of Nanshan pasture in Hunan Province, China. We used monoculture or mixed grasslands of dominant plant species, including Lolium perenne, Trifolium repens, and the invasive weed Persicaria hydropiper, and inoculated them with local strains of pathogenic Fusarium species (Fusarium boothii and Fusarium circinatum) and beneficial fungi Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and Trichoderma hamatum to explore how different strains of fungi affect plant growth and community dynamics. The results showed that Fusarium species (Fusarium boothii and Fusarium circinatum), as a major pathogenic fungus, inhibited the growth of the dominant grass Lolium perenne in moderately and severely degraded soils, which provided growth space and resources for invasive weeds Persicaria hydropiper and further aggravated the degree of grassland degradation. However, the collaborative effect of beneficial fungi (AMF and Trichoderma) and their inhibitory effect on Fusarium species (Fusarium boothii and Fusarium circinatum) could promote the growth of dominant plants and weeds in soils with varying degrees of degradation, which is beneficial to maintaining the stability and diversity of grassland plant communities. The collaborative effect of beneficial fungi could also increase the availability of nutrients in severely degraded soils. Therefore, using beneficial fungi (AMF and Trichoderma) for soil improvement and reducing the harm of pathogenic Fusarium species (Fusarium boothii and Fusarium circinatum) to plant growth is of great significance for promoting the protection and management of grassland ecosystems, as well as for the restoration and recovery of grasslands.
