Abstract It has been reported that Akkermansia muciniphila improves host metabolism and reduces inflammation; however, its potential effects on bile acid metabolism and metabolic patterns in metabolic‐associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) are unknown. In this study, we have analysed C57BL/6 mice under three feeding conditions: (i) a low‐fat diet group (LP), (ii) a high‐fat diet group (HP) and (iii) a high‐fat diet group supplemented with A. muciniphila (HA). The results found that A. muciniphila administration relieved weight gain, hepatic steatosis and liver injury induced by the high‐fat diet. A. muciniphila altered the gut microbiota with a decrease in Alistipes, Lactobacilli, Tyzzerella, Butyricimonas and Blautia, and an enrichment of Ruminiclostridium, Osclibacter, Allobaculum, Anaeroplasma and Rikenella. The gut microbiota changes correlated significantly with bile acids. Meanwhile, A. muciniphila also improved glucose tolerance, gut barriers and adipokines dysbiosis. Akkermansia muciniphila regulated the intestinal FXR‐FGF15 axis and reshaped the construction of bile acids, with reduced secondary bile acids in the caecum and liver, including DCA and LCA. These findings provide new insights into the relationships between probiotics, microflora and metabolic disorders, highlighting the potential role of A. muciniphila in the management of MAFLD.

The high and low temperature dual reaction zone RTS (removing trace sulfur) technology is a novel hydrotreating process but lack of in-depth understanding of its kinetics. Three-lump and five-lump kinetic models were developed based on the diesel hydrogenation experimental data which were carried out in the RTS process under various operating conditions to predict the concentrations of ultra-level sulfur and aromatics in hydrotreated oil samples, respectively. Moreover, the inhibiting effect of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on the hydrodesulfurization rates of S-compounds has been studied by performing calculations with the actual adsorption concentration of H2S in the catalytic active center. The proposed models were able to reproduce the RTS process with good adjustment and accuracy, and relative deviations below 10.7 % at sulfur content below 10 ppm and polycyclic aromatics hydrocarbons content below 3 wt%. Therefore, these models can serve as an effective guide for diesel hydrotreatment, and the calculated results indicate that the optimal operating conditions in the 1st and 2nd reactors are 350 °C and 340 °C, respectively, at a constant pressure of 6.4 MPa and H2/oil volume ratio of 300 v/v.

Previous reports have demonstrated that alcohol consumption significantly reduces the abundance of Lactobacillus in the gut. In this study, we selected five species of the genus Lactobacillus, commonly found in fermented foods, and acknowledged them as safe, edible, and effective in preventing or treating certain diseases, to evaluate their effects on alcoholic liver disease (ALD). By comparing the liver damage indices in each group, we found that the type strain of Lactobacillus helveticus (LH, ATCC 15009) had the most marked alleviating effect on ALD‐induced liver injury. Furthermore, experiments combining microbiomics and metabolomics were conducted to explore the mechanisms underlying the hepatoprotective effects of LH. Finally, we discovered that LH mitigated ethanol‐induced liver steatosis and inflammation in ALD mice by altering the structure and function of the gut microbiome, increasing intestinal levels of short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and enhancing gut barrier integrity. Objective: To perform a meta-analysis on the efficacy and dose-response relationship of blood flow restriction training on muscle strength reported worldwide.Methods: Thirty-four eligible articles with a total sample size of 549 participants were included in the meta-analysis. This study was performed using the method recommended by the Cochrane Handbook (https://training.cochrane.org/handbook), and the effect size was estimated using the standardized mean difference (SMD) and using RevMan 5.3 software (The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, 2014).Results: The meta-analysis showed that blood flow restriction training increased the lower limb extensor muscle strength [SMD = 0.72, 95%; confidence interval (CI): 0.43 to 1.00, p < 0.01], knee extensor isokinetic torque SMD = 0.48 [95% CI: 0.24 to 0.73, p < 0.01], knee flexor isokinetic torque SMD = 0.39 [95% CI: 0.11 to 0.67, p < 0.01], and squat one-repetition maximum [SMD = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.55, p < 0.01]. There was no publication bias. Evaluation of dose-response relationship showed that the training load, mode, frequency, duration, and maximum cuff pressure affected the muscle function.Conclusion: blood flow restriction training. 16 significantly improved lower limb muscle strength, and the optimal training conditions consisted of a weight load smaller or equal to 30% of one-repetition maximum, training duration longer than 4 weeks, frequency of more than 3 times/week, and maximum cuff pressure lower than 200 mmHg.Systematic Review Registration: website, identifier registration number.

ABO3-type perovskite oxides and A3B′B′′2O9-type composite perovskite oxides exhibit proton conduction from 200 ℃ to 1000 ℃. These high-temperature proton conductors have received considerable attention due to their promise as electrolytes in fuel cells, electrolytic hydrogen production, hydrogen separation, electrochemical reactors, sensors, etc. The Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ composite perovskite-type solid electrolyte has stable chemical properties and corrosion resistance to CO2 and H2O, so it can be used in long-term electrochemical devices. Protons are incorporated into Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ in a humid or hydrogen-containing atmosphere because of the reaction of H2O and oxygen vacancies in proton conductors. However, proton conductors also exhibit oxygen vacancy conduction in the high-temperature range. In addition, electron holes can be generated by an oxygen vacancy reaction with atmospheric oxygen, causing proton conductors to exhibit electron-hole conduction. Hence, more oxygen vacancies can be produced with more Ca2+ dopant in Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ due to a lack of positive charge. Meanwhile, the proton and electron-hole concentrations increase with oxygen vacancies, and the conductivity of Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ can be improved. However, the crystal structure of Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ can be changed with Ca2+ doping, and changes in proton, oxygen vacancy, and electron-hole transport numbers, the ratio of protons, oxygen vacancies, and electron-hole conductivity to total conductivity respectively, are unknown with Ca2+ doping, with different effects of crystal structure for protons, oxygen vacancies, and electron-hole conduction. Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ has high conductivity in a humid atmosphere, and the proton transport number with doping amount needs to be further studied. In this work, Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ (x=0, 0.10, 0.18, and 0.30) with a composite perovskite phase was prepared using a solid-state reaction method. With the increase in Ca2+ doping amount, the conductivity of Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ samples first increased and then decreased, and the conductivity of the sample with x=0.18 was the highest. The electron-hole transport number of Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ under the atmosphere containing hydrogen was relatively low. Protons were mainly conductive carriers in Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ below 750 ℃, while Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ exhibited mainly oxygen vacancy conduction at 800 ℃. With the increase in dopant amount, the oxygen vacancy transport number of Ba3Ca1+xNb2−xO9−δ increased gradually, while the proton transport number decreased gradually.

Objective To examine existing literature and pool the data to determine the relative odds ratio of “adding-on” (AO) based on various reported criteria for lower instrumented vertebra (LIV) selection in Lenke type 1A and 2A curves. Methods Using electronic databases, studies reporting on AO and LIV selection in Lenke type 1A and 2A curves were identified. Studies were excluded if they failed to meet the following criteria: ≥ 30 patients, Lenke type 1A or 2A curves, thoracic-only fusions, and inclusion of outcome differences in AO and non-AO groups. Review articles, letters, and case reports were excluded. Results Six studies were identified reporting on 732 patients with either Lenke type 1A or 2A curves treated with thoracic-only fusions. Five different landmarks were used for LIV selection in these studies including the stable vertebra (SV) -1, end vertebra (EV) +1, neutral vertebra (NV), touched vertebra (TV), and substantially touched vertebra (STV) versus nonsubstantially touched vertebra (nSTV) +1. The pooled odds ratios of AO for choosing LIV at levels above the afore landmarks (i.e., ending the construct “short”) versus at the landmarks were 2.59 (SV-1), 2.43 (EV+1), 3.05 (NV), 3.40 (TV), and 4.52 (STV/nSTV+1), all at 95% confidence interval. Conclusion Five landmarks shared a similar characteristic in that the incidence of AO was significantly higher if the LIV was proximal to the chosen landmark. In addition, choosing STV/(nSTV+1) as the LIV have the lowest absolute risk of AO and the greatest risk reduction. If additional levels were fused (i.e., LIV distal to the landmark), there was no statistically significant benefit in further reducing the risk of AO. Selection of the optimal LIV is a complex issue and spine surgeons must balance the risk of AO with the need for motion preservation in young patients.

Abstract Background As of 2 March, 2020, at least 80 151 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases were reported in China. Most of the patients had a history of visiting Hubei Province or contacting with people who had ever stayed in or passed by Hubei Province or were exposed to symptoms. Some patients got infected through only asymptomatic contact. This study aimed to report the epidemic features and lab identification of a patient confirmed with COVID-19 infection through only asymptomatic contact. Case presentation A 44-year-old man, who lived in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China until 6 March 2020, suffered from cough on 27 January 2020. Fever symptoms appeared on 28 January, with a maximum temperature of 38.8 °C, accompanied by cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue, muscle ache, joint ache, and other symptoms. The symptoms continued until he was hospitalized on 30 January. Coronavirus conventional polymerase chain reaction assay was positive for the throat swab sample. The patient, along with his wife and son, drove from Nanchang to back to Honghu City, Hubei Province, on 23 January 2020. After staying with his parents and brother’s family for 3 days, the patient drove back to Nanchang and arrived on 25 January. On the way back home, they stopped by Tongshan service area, Hubei Province, without any close contact with other people. After arriving home in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, none of them left their residence. In addition, his parents stayed at home for 20 days with his younger brother’s family before they got back. His younger brother and one of his brother’s children visited Wuhan on 5 January and came home on 6 January 2020. Conclusions This report suggested that, in the early phase of COVID-19 pneumonia, routine screening could miss patients who were virus carriers. Highlighting travel history is of paramount importance for the early detection and isolation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 cases.

An active wrist can deliver both bending and twisting motions that are essential for soft grippers to perform dexterous manipulations capable of producing a wide range movements. Currently, the versions of gripper wrists are relatively heavy due to the bending and twisting motions performed by the motors. Pneumatic soft actuators can generate multiple motions with lightweight drives. This research evaluates a pneumatic soft wrist based on four parallel soft helical actuators. The kinematics models for predicting bending and twisting motions of this soft wrist are developed. Finite element method simulations are conducted to verify the functions of bending and twisting of this wrist. In addition, the active motions of the soft pneumatic wrist are experimentally demonstrated. Based on sensitivity studies of geometric parameters, a set of parameter values are identified for obtaining maximum bending and twisting angles for a bionic human wrist. Through simulation and experimental tests of the soft wrist for a soft gripper, the desired bending and twisting motions as those of a real human hand wrist are established.

Cardiac hypertrophy is a common pathological process of various cardiovascular diseases, which is often accompanied with structural and electrical remodeling, and can even lead to sudden cardiac death. However, its molecular mechanism still remains largely unknown. Here, we induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy by angiotensin II (Ang II), and found that miR-27a-3p and hypertrophy-related genes were up-regulated. Further studies showed that miR-27a-3p-inhibitor can alleviate myocardial hypertrophy and electrical remodeling. Moreover, luciferase assay confirmed that miR-27a-3p could regulate the expression of downstream Hoxa10 at the transcriptional level by targeting at its 3′UTR. At the same time, the protein expression of Hoxa10 was significantly reduced in Ang II-treated cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, overexpression of Hoxa10 can reverse myocardial hypertrophy and electrical remodeling induced by Ang II in cardiomyocytes. Finally, we found that Hoxa10 positively regulated the expression of potassium channel protein Kv4.3 which was down-regulated in hypertrophic cardiomyocytes. Taken together, our results revealed miR-27a-3p/Hoxa10/Kv4.3 axis as a new mechanism of Ang II-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, which provided a new target for clinical prevention and treatment of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure.

To investigate the clinical value of changes in the subtypes of peripheral blood lymphocytes and levels of inflammatory cytokines in patients with COVID-19, the total numbers of lymphocytes and CD4+ lymphocytes and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes were calculated and observed in different groups of patients with COVID-19. The results show that the lymphocytopenia in patients with COVID-19 was mainly manifested by decreases in the CD4+ T lymphocyte number and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio. The decreased number of CD4+ T lymphocytes and the elevated levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were correlated with the severity of COVID-19 disease.
