Abstract

ObjectiveTo analyze the epidemiological characteristics of varicella in Minhang District， Shanghai from 2013 to 2022， and to evaluate the impact of adjusting the varicella vaccination program to a two-dose regimen and its inclusion in the Shanghai immunization program on the incidence of varicella.MethodsData on reported varicella cases from 2013 to 2022 in Minhang District were collected. Interrupted time series analysis and segmented regression models were used to analyze the changes in varicella incidence before and after the adjustment of varicella immunization strategies.ResultsFrom 2013 to 2022， the average annual incidence of varicella was 76.58/100 000， with the highest incidence in 2017 （119.21/100 000） and the lowest in 2022 （27.02/100 000）. The varicella incidence exhibited seasonal patterns with peaks occurring from March to June and October to January of the following year. Prior to the adjustment of varicella immunization strategies （2013‒2017）， the varicella incidence showed an upward trend （z=2.20， P=0.03）， while after the adjustment （2018‒2022）， a adownward trend was observed （2018‒2022） （z=-2.25， P=0.02）. Abstract

Due to its self-regularizing nature and its ability to quantify uncertainty, the Bayesian approach has achieved excellent recovery performance across a wide range of sparse signal recovery applications. However, most existing methods are based on the real-value signal model, with the complex-value signal model rarely considered. Motivated by the adaptive least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and the sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) framework, a hierarchical model with adaptive Laplace priors is proposed in this paper for recovery of complex sparse signals. Moreover, the space alternating approach is integrated into the algorithm to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed method. In experiments, the proposed algorithm is studied for complex Gaussian random dictionaries and different types of complex signals. These experiments show that the proposed algorithm offers better recovery performance for different types of complex signals than state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel supervised single-channel speech enhancement method combing the the Kullback-Leibler divergence-based non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and hidden Markov model (NMF-HMM). With the application of HMM, the temporal dynamics information of speech signals can be taken into account. In the training stage, the sum of Poisson, leading to the KL divergence measure, is used as the observation model for each state of HMM. This ensures that a computationally efficient multiplicative update can be used for the parameter update of the proposed model. In the online enhancement stage, we propose a novel minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimator for the proposed NMF-HMM. This estimator can be implemented using parallel computing, saving the time complexity. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by objective measures. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy achieves better speech enhancement performance than state-of-the-art speech enhancement methods. More specifically, compared with the traditional NMF-based speech enhancement methods, our proposed algorithm achieves a 5\% improvement for short-time objective intelligibility (STOI) and 0.18 improvement for perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ).

Abstract

The performance of voice-based Parkinson's disease (PD) detection systems degrades when there is an acoustic mismatch between training and operating conditions caused mainly by degradation in test signals. In this paper, we address this mismatch by considering three types of degradation commonly encountered in remote voice analysis, namely background noise, reverberation and nonlinear distortion, and investigate how these degradations influence the performance of a PD detection system. Given that the specific degradation is known, we explore the effectiveness of a variety of enhancement algorithms in compensating this mismatch and improving the PD detection accuracy. Then, we propose two approaches to automatically control the quality of recordings by identifying the presence and type of short-term and long-term degradations and protocol violations in voice signals. Finally, we experiment with using the proposed quality control methods to inform the choice of enhancement algorithm. Experimental results using the voice recordings of the mPower mobile PD data set under different degradation conditions show the effectiveness of the quality control approaches in selecting an appropriate enhancement method and, consequently, in improving the PD detection accuracy. Abstract

Fundamental frequency is one of the most important characteristics of speech and audio signals. Harmonic model-based fundamental frequency estimators offer a higher estimation accuracy and robustness against noise than the widely used autocorrelation-based methods. However, the traditional harmonic model-based estimators do not take the temporal smoothness of the fundamental frequency, the model order, and the voicing into account as they process each data segment independently. In this paper, a fully Bayesian fundamental frequency tracking algorithm based on the harmonic model and a first-order Markov process model is proposed. Smoothness priors are imposed on the fundamental frequencies, model orders, and voicing using first-order Markov process models. Using these Markov models, fundamental frequency estimation and voicing detection errors can be reduced. Using the harmonic model, the proposed fundamental frequency tracker has an improved robustness to noise. An analytical form of the likelihood function, which can be computed efficiently, is derived. Compared to the state-of-the-art neural network and non-parametric approaches, the proposed fundamental frequency tracking algorithm reduces the mean absolute errors and gross errors by 15\% and 20\% on the Keele pitch database and 36\% and 26\% on sustained /a/ sounds from a database of Parkinson's disease voices under 0 dB white Gaussian noise. Abstract

PurposeTo predict the neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (CRT) response in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) using radiomics and deep learning based on pre-treatment MRI and a mid-radiation follow-up MRI taken 3-4 weeks after the start of CRT.MethodsA total of 51 patients were included, 45 with pre-treatment, 41 with mid-radiation therapy (RT), and 35 with both MRI sets. The multi-parametric MRI protocol included T2, diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) with b-values of 0 and 800 s/mm2, and dynamic-contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI. After completing CRT and surgery, the specimen was examined to determine the pathological response based on the tumor regression grade. The tumor ROI was manually drawn on the post-contrast image and mapped to other sequences. The total tumor volume and mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were measured. Radiomics using GLCM texture and histogram parameters, and deep learning using a convolutional neural network (CNN), were performed to differentiate pathologic complete response (pCR) vs. non-pCR, and good response (GR) vs. non-GR.ResultsTumor volume decreased and ADC increased significantly in the mid-RT MRI compared to the pre-treatment MRI. For predicting pCR vs. non-pCR, combining ROI and radiomics features achieved an AUC of 0.80 for pre-treatment, 0.82 for mid-RT, and 0.86 for both MRI together. For predicting GR vs. non-GR, the AUC was 0.91 for pre-treatment, 0.92 for mid-RT, and 0.93 for both MRI together. In deep learning using CNN, combining pre-treatment and mid-RT MRI achieved a higher accuracy compared to using either dataset alone, with AUC of 0.83 for predicting pCR vs. non-pCR.ConclusionRadiomics based on pre-treatment and early follow-up multi-parametric MRI in LARC patients receiving CRT could extract comprehensive quantitative information to predict final pathologic response.

Abstract

The modeling of speech can be used for speech synthesis and speech recognition. We present a speech analysis method based on pole-zero modeling of speech with mixed block sparse and Gaussian excitation. By using a pole-zero model, instead of the all-pole model, a better spectral fitting can be expected. Moreover, motivated by the block sparse glottal flow excitation during voiced speech and the white noise excitation for unvoiced speech, we model the excitation sequence as a combination of block sparse signals and white noise. A variational EM (VEM) method is proposed for estimating the posterior PDFs of the block sparse residuals and point estimates of mod- elling parameters within a sparse Bayesian learning framework. Abstract

This study integrated rule-based control (RBC) and permeable pavements to assess the combined effectiveness in reducing the combined sewer overflow (CSO) and energy consumption of the urban drainage system (UDS). Non-dominated sorting was employed to identify the optimal RBC preset parameters under varying rainfall intensities and permeable pavement installation proportion. Cost-effectiveness was calculated for different RBC parameters and permeable pavement installation scenarios. The contribution of installing permeable pavements in each sub-catchment to the cost-effectiveness was quantified using frequency statistics. The combined effectiveness of the RBC and LID achieved maximum reduction rates of 51.12% to 72.46% in the CSO volume and 14.75% to 33.89% in energy consumption across return periods from 2-year to 20-year. The key findings were as follows: (1) Optimization of the RBC preset parameters can reduce the CSO volume and energy consumption, but the effectiveness is limited by the capacity of the UDS. (2) In the UDS, the permeable pavement installation area and return periods of design rainfall significantly impact the optimization of RBC. (3) The impact of the RBC parameters on the cost-effectiveness of installing permeable pavements in each sub-catchment is minimal.
