19. Effect of Tungsten Doping on Performance of MAO Coatings on Ti6Al4V Drill Pipe

Abstract

A tungsten doped micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating on TC4 Titanium Alloy Drill Pipe was prepared by adding sodium tungstate in electrolytes. The effects of different adding concentrations on the electrical conductivity of the electrolyte, performance and structure of MAO coatings on titanium alloy drill pipe were studied. The electrical conductivity of the solution was tested using Ohm's law. The surface morphologies of the coatings were observed by SEM. The element contents of the MAO coatings were analyzed by EDS. The hardness of the coatings was measured by microhardness tester. The phase composition was analyzed by XRD and the corrosion resistance was evaluated by polarization curves. The results show that WO42−begins to form WO3when the temperature of micro-arc discharge area is above 1314 K. With increasing sodium tungstate doping concentration, the conductivity of the solution increases first and then decreases, and the hardness and corrosion resistance of the coatings also show the identical trend. Tungsten doping slightly affects the phase composition of the MAO coating and it is helpful to improve the hardness and corrosion resistance of the coatings. The optimum doping concentration is 3 g L−1in this work.

Abstract

The experiments were operated for the cylindrical sample (cement/steel) in high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) CO2 environment to simulate surrounding CO2 attack in oil and gas well. The interfacial evolutions between well cement and casing steel were measured, including mechanical property, structure alteration, chemical change and electrochemical character. The interfacial behaviors are attributed to the competition of hydration and degradation of Portland cement. The damage at the interface was faster than the cement bulk deterioration by carbonation. Thus, the interface provided a potential flow leakage pathway for the HTHP gas and fluid in the well, so improving interfacial stability between well cement and casing steel is the key issue to long-term zonal isolation.

Abstract

Flowage in rock salt may induce extrusion deformation on casing pipes; this hinders performance in the production process in injection wells and also challenges security in oilfields. The typical treatment for this problem is to grind or expand the deformed sections of the casing, which itself may cause additional damage (cold hardening) in the casing. Cold hardening may degrade the performance of casing materials, especially when the materials are exposed to a high-sulfur environment. Since it is common for casing pipes materials exposure in the H2S/CO2 environment like Puguang gas field, the cracking sensitivity of C110 after cold hardening is very important. To investigate the environmentally assisted cracking performance of C110, a series of tests were conducted, including the basic mechanical property test, the electrochemical corrosion test, the Double Cantilever Beam test (DCB), and the four-point bending test. The results indicate that cold hardening increases the yield strength, reduces the impact toughness, and degrades sulfur-resistance which greatly increases the potential risk to the integrity of the wellbore.

Abstract

This paper analyzed the microstructure of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy after different heat treatments. The tensile experiment and instrumented impact test were performed. The relationship among the microstructure, impact fracture characteristic and mechanical properties was analyzed by metallurgical microscope and environment scanning electron microscope (ESEM). Results show that the microstructure, mechanical properties and impact toughness of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy are affected by the solution and aging treatment. The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength are improved remarkably. The ductility increases firstly, and then decrease. The good comprehensive properties can be obtained when the Ti6Al4V titanium alloy is treated under the condition of 960 °C/1 h + WQ and 500 °C/4 h + AC. σ0.2 is 1050 MPa, σb is 1120 MPa and Ak is 46.22 J·cm−2. The microstructure of the titanium alloy after solution and aging treatment consists of the β matrix and the precipitation of the α-phase. The lamellar β-phase and the α-phase structure of the small needle plexiform can enhance comprehensive properties.
