Background Postoperative delirium (POD) describes a multifactorial disease process occurring after surgery. However, few studies have focused on patients undergoing brain tumor resection, and its influencing factors are unclear. Methods We performed a 1-year, single-center, cross-sectional, retrospective survey at Huashan Hospital. Patients were screened using the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU), Confusion Assessment Method, and Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale by trained bedside nurses. Perioperative data were collected using demographic and disease-related questionnaires. The primary outcome measures were the incidence of POD and subtype of POD. Independent predictors of POD were estimated from multivariate logistic regression models, and receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to compare the predictive performance of the models. Results Of the 916 patients included in the study, 893 were analyzed. The overall incidence was 14.78%, 67 had hyperactive delirium (50.76%), 55 had hypoactive delirium (41.67%), and 10 had mixed delirium (7.57%). Age, sex, working status, tobacco use history, comorbidities, physical restraint, axillary temperature (>38.5°C), electrolyte disturbances, duration of anesthesia, pathologic diagnosis, tumor site, length of disease, and duration of operation were risk factors for POD. Conversely, saddle area mass was a protective factor. Age, tobacco use history, electrolyte disturbances, physical restraint, and duration of operation were included in the model. Conclusions POD is harmful to patients undergoing brain tumor resection, increasing length of stay in the intensive care unit and hospitalization costs. Intraoperative factors and postoperative factors, in addition to older age and tobacco use history, are associated with POD.

The preparation and the photoelectric characteristics of molybdenum selenide (MoSe2) films doped with the rare earth element Er3+ are presented herein. The surface mororphology, light absorption and emission of the undoped and Er3+ doped MoSe2 thin films were analyzed, we found that the Er3+ doped MoSe2 films exhibited more crystalline, and their mobility and conductivity were enhanced by about one order higher relative to that of the pure sample. Also, the optical absorptivity and luminous intensity of Er3+ doped MoSe2 were also enhanced by two times than that of the pure MoSe2. In addition, the photovoltaic effect of the Er3+-doped MoSe2 films increased significantly. The short-circuit current increased almost ten-fold, and the open-circuit voltage was enhanced four-fold. These results show that the Er3+ ions not only enhanced the conductivity, but also improved the optical properties of the films. The Er3+ doped MoSe2 may be applied to make sensitive light emitting devices and detectors.

We present the influences of rare earth element Eu 3 + doping on the photoelectric characteristics of molybdenum disulfide ( MoS 2 ) films deposited on p-Si substrates using vapor deposition method. The surface topography, crystalline structure, light absorption, and luminescence properties of Eu 3 + doped and undoped MoS 2 thin films were investigated in detail. We found that the Eu 3 + doped MoS 2 films have better crystallinity, and their electron mobility and conductivity are approximately one order of magnitude higher than those of the undoped films. In addition, we observed that the light absorption and photoluminescence intensities of the doped films in the visible light range, they were enhanced by approximately two orders of magnitude than those of the undoped MoS 2 films at room temperature. Moreover, we found that the photoelectric response characteristics of the doped MoS 2 ∕ Si heterojunction improved significantly. The results show that the Eu 3 + doped MoS 2 films can be used to fabricate high efficiency luminescent and optoelectronic devices.

Copy number variation (CNV) has emerged as another important genetic marker in addition to SNP for understanding etiology of complex disease. Kv channel interacting protein 1 (KCNIP1) is a Ca2+-dependent transcriptional modulator that contributes to the regulation of insulin secretion. Previous genome-wide CNV assay identified the KCNIP1 gene encompassing a CNV region, however, its further effect and risk rate on type 2 diabetes (T2D) have rarely been addressed, especially in Chinese population. The current study aims to detect and excavate genetic distribution profile of KCNIP1 CNV in Chinese T2D and control populations, and further to investigate the associations with clinical characteristics. Divergent patterns of the KCNIP1 CNV were identified (p < 0.01), in which the copy number gain was predominant in T2D, while the copy number normal accounted for the most in control group. Consistently, the individuals with copy number gain showed significant risk on T2D (OR = 4.550, p < 0.01). The KCNIP1 copy numbers presented significantly positive correlations with fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin in T2D. For OGTT test, the T2D patients with copy number gain had remarkably elevated glucose contents (60, 120, 180-min, p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) and diminished insulin levels (60, 120-min, p < 0.05) than those with copy number loss and normal, which suggested that the KCNIP1 CNV was correlated with the glucose and insulin action. This is the first CNV association study of the KCNIP1 gene in Chinese population, and these data indicated that KCNIP1 might function as a T2D-susceptibility gene whose dysregulation alters insulin production.

Epigenetic modifications are important mechanisms responsible for cancer progression. Accumulating data suggest that (&minus, )-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant catechin of green tea, may hamper carcinogenesis by targeting epigenetic alterations. We found that signal peptide-CUB (complement protein C1r/C1s, Uegf, and Bmp1)-EGF (epidermal growth factor) domain-containing protein 2 (SCUBE2), a tumor suppressor gene, was hypermethylated in breast tumors. However, it is unknown whether EGCG regulates SCUBE2 methylation, and the mechanisms remain undefined. This study was designed to investigate the effect of EGCG on SCUBE2 methylation in breast cancer cells. We reveal that EGCG possesses a significantly inhibitory effect on cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner and presents more effects than other catechins. EGCG treatment resulted in enhancement of the SCUBE2 gene, along with elevated E-cadherin and decreased vimentin expression, leading to significant suppression of cell migration and invasion. The inhibitory effect of EGCG on SCUBE2 knock-down cells was remarkably alleviated. Further study demonstrated that EGCG significantly decreased the SCUBE2 methylation status by reducing DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) expression and activity. In summary, this study reported for the first time that SCUBE2 methylation can be reversed by EGCG treatment, finally resulting in the inhibition of breast cancer progression. These results suggest the epigenetic role of EGCG and its potential implication in breast cancer therapy.

The cAMP responsive element binding protein 1 (CREB1) is a ubiquitous transcription factor that contributes to the regulation of gluconeogenesis. The mechanisms of the CREB1 function remain largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to explore genetic variations in CREB1 promoter region and determine whether these loci affect transcriptional activity and risk on type 2 diabetes (T2D).
