Active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a revolutionary technique for the future 6G networks. The conventional far-field single-IRS-aided directional modulation(DM) networks have only one (no direct path) or two (existing direct path) degrees of freedom (DoFs). This means that there are only one or two streams transmitted simultaneously from base station to user and will seriously limit its rate gain achieved by IRS. How to create multiple DoFs more than two for DM? In this paper, single large-scale IRS is divided to multiple small IRSs and a novel multi-IRS-aided multi-stream DM network is proposed to achieve a point-to-point multi-stream transmission by creating $K$ ($\geq3$) DoFs, where multiple small IRSs are placed distributively via multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The null-space projection, zero-forcing (ZF) and phase alignment are adopted to design the transmit beamforming vector, receive beamforming vector and phase shift matrix (PSM), respectively, called NSP-ZF-PA. Here, $K$ PSMs and their corresponding beamforming vectors are independently optimized. The weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) algorithm is involved in alternating iteration for the optimization variables by introducing the power constraint on IRS, named WMMSE-PC, where the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm is used to solve the total PSM. To achieve a lower computational complexity, a maximum trace method, called Max-TR-SVD, is proposed by optimize the PSM of all IRSs. Numerical simulation results has shown that the proposed NSP-ZF-PA performs much better than Max-TR-SVD in terms of rate. In particular, the rate of NSP-ZF-PA with sixteen small IRSs is about five times that of NSP-ZF-PA with combining all small IRSs as a single large IRS. Thus, a dramatic rate enhancement may be achieved by multiple distributed IRSs.

In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-and-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network in maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is proposed, where ship1 ($\text{S}_1$) and ship2 ($\text{S}_2$) can be viewed as data collecting centers. To enhance the message exchange rate between $\text{S}_1$ and $\text{S}_2$, a problem of maximizing minimum rate is cast, where the variables, namely AF relay beamforming matrix and IRS phase shifts of two time slots, need to be optimized. To achieve a maximum rate, a low-complexity alternately iterative (AI) scheme based on zero forcing and successive convex approximation (LC-ZF-SCA) algorithm is presented. To obtain a significant rate enhancement, a high-performance AI method based on one step, semidefinite programming and penalty SCA (ONS-SDP-PSCA) is proposed. Simulation results show that by the proposed LC-ZF-SCA and ONS-SDP-PSCA methods, the rate of the IRS-and-UAV-assisted AF relay network surpass those of with random phase and only AF relay networks. Moreover, ONS-SDP-PSCA perform better than LC-ZF-SCA in aspect of rate.

Different with conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), simultaneous transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) can reflect and transmit the signals to the receiver. In this paper, to serve more ground users and increase the deployment flexibility, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a STAR-RIS (STAR-RIS-UAV) aided wireless communications for multi-user networks. Energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) protocols are considered to control the reflection and transmission coefficients of STAR-RIS elements. To maximize the sum rate of the STAR-RIS-UAV aided coordinated multipoint cellular system for multi-user networks, the corresponding beamforming vectors as well as transmitted and reflected coefficients matrices are optimized. Specifically, instead of adopting the alternating optimization, we design an iteration method to optimize all variables for both ES and MS protocols at the same time. Simulation results reveal that STAR-RIS-UAV aided wireless communication system has a much higher sum rate than the system with conventional RIS or without RIS. Since reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered to be a passive reflector for rate performance enhancement, a RIS-aided amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network is presented. By jointly optimizing the beamforming matrix at AF relay and the phase shifts matrices at RIS, two schemes are put forward to address a maximizing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) problem. Firstly, aiming at achieving a high rate, a high-performance alternating optimization (AO) method based on Charnes-Cooper transformation and semidefinite programming (CCT-SDP) is proposed, where the optimization problem is decomposed to three subproblems solved by CCT-SDP and rank-one solutions can be recovered by Gaussian randomization. While the optimization variables in CCT-SDP method are matrices, which leads to extremely high complexity. In order to reduce the complexity, a low-complexity AO scheme based on Dinkelbachs transformation and successive convex approximation (DT-SCA) is put forward, where matrices variables are transformed to vector variables and three decoupled subproblems are solved by DT-SCA. Simulation results verify that compared to two benchmarks (i.e. a RIS-assisted AF relay network with random phase and a AF relay network without RIS), the proposed CCT-SDP and DT-SCA schemes can harvest better rate performance. Furthermore, it is revealed that the rate of the low-complexity DT-SCA method is close to that of CCT-SDP method.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology for wireless communication composed of a large number of low-cost passive devices with reconfigurable parameters, which can reflect signals with a certain phase shift and is capable of building programmable communication environment. In this paper, to avoid the high hardware cost and energy consumption in spatial modulation (SM), an IRS-aided hybrid secure SM (SSM) system with a hybrid precoder is proposed. To improve the security performance, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the beamforming at IRS and hybrid precoding at the transmitter. Considering that the SR has no closed form expression, an approximate SR (ASR) expression is derived as the objective function. To improve the SR performance, three IRS beamforming methods, called IRS alternating direction method of multipliers (IRS-ADMM), IRS block coordinate ascend (IRS-BCA) and IRS semi-definite relaxation (IRS-SDR), are proposed. As for the hybrid precoding design, approximated secrecy rate-successive convex approximation (ASR-SCA) method and cut-off rate-gradient ascend (COR-GA) method are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IRS-SDR and IRS-ADMM beamformers harvest substantial SR performance gains over IRS-BCA. Particularly, the proposed IRS-ADMM and IRS-BCA are of low-complexity at the expense of a little performance loss compared with IRS-SDR. Compared to passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), active IRS is viewed as a more efficient promising technique to combat the double-fading impact in IRS-aided wireless network. In this paper, in order to boost the achievable rate of user in such a wireless network, three enhanced-rate iterative beamforming methods are proposed by designing the amplifying factors and the corresponding phases at active IRS. The first method, maximizing the simplified signal-to-noise ratio (Max-SSNR) is designed by omitting the cross-term in the definition of rate. Using the Rayleigh-Ritz (RR) theorem, Max-SSNR-RR is proposed to iteratively optimize the norm of beamforming vector and its associated normalized vector. In addition, generalized maximum ratio reflection (GMRR) is presented with a closed-form expression, which is motivated by the maximum ratio combining. To further improve rate, maximizing SNR (Max-SNR) is designed by fractional programming (FP), which is called Max-SNR-FP. Simulation results show that the proposed three methods make an obvious rate enhancement over Max-reflecting signal-to-noise ratio (Max-RSNR), maximum ratio reflection (MRR), selective ratio reflecting (SRR), equal gain reflection (EGR) and passive IRS, and are in increasing order of rate performance as follows: Max-SSNR-RR, GMRR, and Max-SNR-FP.

In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay wireless network is considered, where two users exchange information via IRS and DF relay. To enhance the sum rate performance, three power allocation (PA) strategies are proposed. Firstly, a method of maximizing sum rate (Max-SR) is proposed to jointly optimize the PA factors of user U1, user U2 and relay station (RS). To further improve the sum rate performance, two high-performance schemes, namely maximizing minimum sum rate (Max-Min-SR) and maximizing sum rate with rate constraint (Max-SR-RC), are presented. Simulation results show that the proposed three methods outperform the equal power allocation (EPA) method in terms of sum rate performance. In particular, the highest performance gain achieved by Max-SR-RC method is up to 45.2% over EPA. Furthermore, it is verified that the total power and random shadow variable X{\sigma} have a substantial impact on the sum rate performance.

In this paper, we investigate the anti-jamming problem of a directional modulation (DM) system with the aid of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). As an efficient tool to combat malicious jamming, receive beamforming (RBF) is usually designed to be on null-space of jamming channel or covariance matrix from Mallory to Bob. Thus, it is very necessary to estimate the receive jamming covariance matrix (JCM) at Bob. To achieve a precise JCM estimate, three JCM estimation methods, including eigenvalue decomposition (EVD), parametric estimation method by gradient descend (PEM-GD) and parametric estimation method by alternating optimization (PEM-AO), are proposed. Here, the proposed EVD is under rank-2 constraint of JCM. The PEM-GD method fully explores the structure features of JCM and the PEM-AO is to decrease the computational complexity of the former via dimensionality reduction. The simulation results show that in low and medium jamming-noise ratio (JNR) regions, the proposed three methods perform better than the existing sample covariance matrix method. As a low-cost and low-power-consumption passive reflector, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can make a significant rate improvement by building a programmable wireless environment. To improve the rate performance and coverage range of wireless networks, an IRS-aided decode-and-forward (DF) relay network is proposed with multiple antennas at relay station (RS). To achieve a high rate, an alternately iterative structure (AIS) of maximizing receive power (Max-RP) at RS is proposed to jointly optimize the beamforming vectors at RS and phase shifts at IRS. Considering its high-complexity, two low-complexity Max-RP schemes of null-space projection (NSP) plus maximum ratio combining (MRC) and IRS element selection (IRSES) plus MRC are presented to reduce this complexity, respectively. For the former, NSP is used to separate the reflected signal from IRS and the direct transmitted signal from source and MRC is adopted to combine the two signals at RS. For the latter, the basic concept of IRSES is as follows: IRS is partitioned into M subsets of elements and adjusting the phases of all elements per subset make all reflected signals and the direct signal from source phase alignment (PA) at the corresponding antenna of relay. Simulation results show that the proposed three methods perform much better than the existing network with single-antenna relay in terms of rate performance. In particular, a 85% rate gain over existing scheme is achieved in the high signal-to-noise ratio region. Moreover, it is verified that the positions of RS and IRS have a substantial impact on rate performance, and there exists an optimal positions of RS and IRS.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising solution to build a programmable wireless environment for future communication systems, in which the reflector elements steer the incident signal in fully customizable ways by passive beamforming. In this paper, an IRS-aided secure spatial modulation (SM) is proposed, where the IRS perform passive beamforming and information transfer simultaneously by adjusting the on-off states of the reflecting elements. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the average secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the passive beamforming at IRS and the transmit power at transmitter under the consideration that the direct pathes channels from transmitter to receivers are obstructed by obstacles. As the expression of SR is complex, we derive a newly fitting expression (NASR) for the expression of traditional approximate SR (TASR), which has simpler closed-form and more convenient for subsequent optimization. Based on the above two fitting expressions, three beamforming methods, called maximizing NASR via successive convex approximation (Max-NASR-SCA), maximizing NASR via dual ascent (Max-NASR-DA) and maximizing TASR via semi-definite relaxation (Max-TASR-SDR) are proposed to improve the SR performance. Additionally, two transmit power design (TPD) methods are proposed based on the above two approximate SR expressions, called Max-NASR-TPD and Max-TASR-TPD. Simulation results show that the proposed Max-NASR-DA and Max-NASR-SCA IRS beamformers harvest substantial SR performance gains over Max-TASR-SDR. For TPD, the proposed Max-NASR-TPD performs better than Max-TASR-TPD. Particularly, the Max-NASR-TPD has a closed-form solution.

In power system dynamic simulation, up to 90% of the computational time is devoted to solve the network equations, i.e., a set of linear equations. Traditional approaches are based on sparse LU factorization, which is inherently sequential. In this paper, an inverse-based network solution is proposed by a hierarchical method for computing and store the approximate inverse of the conductance matrix in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. The proposed method can also efficiently update the inverse by modifying only local sub-matrices to reflect changes in the network, e.g., loss of a line. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to be a disruptive wireless communication technique that is capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we study a free-space RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system in far-field operation. To maximize the received power from the physical and electromagnetic nature point of view, a comprehensive optimization, including beamforming of the transmitter, phase shifts of the RIS, orientation and position of the RIS is formulated and addressed. After exploiting the property of line-of-sight (LoS) links, we derive closed-form solutions of beamforming and phase shifts. For the non-trivial RIS position optimization problem in arbitrary three-dimensional space, a dimensional-reducing theory is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed closed-form beamforming and phase shifts approach the upper bound of the received power. The robustness of our proposed solutions in terms of the perturbation is also verified. Moreover, the RIS significantly enhances the performance of the mmWave/THz communication system.

Recently, passive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) localization has become popular due to mobility and convenience. In this paper, we consider a scenario of using distributed drone cluster to estimate the position of a passive emitter via received signal strength (RSS). First, a distributed majorizeminimization (DMM) RSS-based localization method is proposed. To accelerate its convergence, a tight upper bound of the objective function from the primary one is derived. Furthermore, to reduce communication overhead, a distributed estimation scheme using the Fisher information matrix (DEF) is presented, with only requiring one-round communication between edge UAVs and center UAV. Additionally, a local search solution is used as the initial value of DEF. Simulation results show that the proposed DMM performs better than the existing distributed Gauss-Newton method (DGN) in terms of root of mean square error (RMSE) under a limited low communication overhead constraint. Moreover, the proposed DEF performs much better than MM in terms of RMSE, but has a higher computational complexity than the latter.

This paper considers a secure multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system aided by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Specifically, we aim to minimize the transmit power at the Alice via jointly optimizing the transmit beamformer, AN vector and phase shifts at the IRS subject to the secrecy rate constraints as well as the unit modulus constraints of IRS phase shifts. However, the optimization problem is non-convex and directly solving it is intractable. To tackle the optimization problem, we first transform it into a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) problem, and then alternately update the transmit beamformer and AN matrix as well as the phase shifts at the IRS. In order to reduce the high computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity algorithm based on second-order cone programming (SOCP). We decouple the optimization problem into two sub-problems and optimize the transmit beamformer, AN vector and the phase shifts alternately by solving two corresponding SOCP sub-problem. Simulation results show that the proposed SDR and SOCP schemes require half or less transmit power than the scheme without IRS, which demonstrates the advantages of introducing IRS and the effectiveness of the proposed methods., Comment: 10 pages,8 figures

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is of low-cost and energy-efficiency and will be a promising technology for the future wireless communications like sixth generation. To address the problem of conventional directional modulation (DM) that Alice only transmits single confidential bit stream (CBS) to Bob with multiple antennas in a line-of-sight channel, IRS is proposed to create friendly multipaths for DM such that two CBSs can be transmitted from Alice to Bob. This will significantly enhance the secrecy rate (SR) of DM. To maximize the SR (Max-SR), a general non-convex optimization problem is formulated with the unit-modulus constraint of IRS phase-shift matrix (PSM), and the general alternating iterative (GAI) algorithm is proposed to jointly obtain the transmit beamforming vectors (TBVs) and PSM by alternately optimizing one and fixing another. To reduce its high complexity, a low-complexity iterative algorithm for Max-SR is proposed by placing the constraint of null-space (NS) on the TBVs, called NS projection (NSP). Here, each CBS is transmitted separately in the NSs of other CBS and AN channels. Simulation results show that the SRs of the proposed GAI and NSP can approximately double that of IRS-based DM with single CBS for massive IRS in the high signal-to-noise ratio region.

In this paper, secure wireless information and power transfer with intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is proposed for a multiple-input single-output (MISO) system. Under the secrecy rate (SR) and the reflecting phase shifts of IRS constraints, the secure transmit beamforming at access point (AP) and phase shifts at IRS are jointly optimized to maximize the harvested power of energy harvesting receiver (EHR). Due to the non-convexity of optimization problem and coupled optimization variables, firstly, we convert the optimization problem into a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) problem and a sub-optimal solution is achieved. To reduce the high-complexity of the proposed SDR method, a low-complexity successive convex approximation (SCA) technique is proposed. Simulation results show the power harvested by the proposed SDR and SCA methods approximately double that of the existing method without IRS given the same SR. In particular, the proposed SCA achieves almost the same performance as the proposed SDR but with a much lower complexity.

$\textbf{Motivation:}$ Small $p$-values are often required to be accurately estimated in large-scale genomic studies for the adjustment of multiple hypothesis tests and the ranking of genomic features based on their statistical significance. For those complicated test statistics whose cumulative distribution functions are analytically intractable, existing methods usually do not work well with small $p$-values due to lack of accuracy or computational restrictions. We propose a general approach for accurately and efficiently estimating small $p$-values for a broad range of complicated test statistics based on the principle of the cross-entropy method and Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling techniques. $\textbf{Results:}$ We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm through simulations and demonstrate its application to three real-world examples in genomic studies. The results show that our approach can accurately evaluate small to extremely small $p$-values (e.g. $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-100}$). Buffer insertion is a popular technique to reduce the interconnect delay. The classic buffer insertion algorithm of van Ginneken has time complexity O(n^2), where n is the number of buffer positions. Lillis, Cheng and Lin extended van Ginneken's algorithm to allow b buffer types in time O (b^2 n^2). For modern design libraries that contain hundreds of buffers, it is a serious challenge to balance the speed and performance of the buffer insertion algorithm. In this paper, we present a new algorithm that computes the optimal buffer insertion in O (bn^2) time. The reduction is achieved by the observation that the (Q, C) pairs of the candidates that generate the new candidates must form a convex hull.
