Single-spin asymmetries for semi-inclusive pion production in deep-inelastic scattering have been measured for the first time. A significant target-spin asymmetry of the distribution in the azimuthal angle straight phi of the pion relative to the lepton scattering plane was formed for pi(+) electroproduction on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target. The corresponding analyzing power in the sinstraight phi moment of the cross section is 0.022+/-0.005+/-0.003. This result can be interpreted as the effect of terms in the cross section involving chiral-odd spin distribution functions in combination with a chiral-odd fragmentation function that is sensitive to the transverse polarization of the fragmenting quark.

Spin transfer in deep-inelastic Lambda electroproduction has been studied with the HERMES detector using the 27.6 GeV polarized positron beam in the DESY HERA storage ring. For an average fractional energy transfer [z]=0.45, the longitudinal spin transfer from the virtual photon to the Lambda has been extracted. The spin transfer along the Lambda momentum direction is found to be 0.11+or-0.17(stat)+or-0.03(syst); similar values are found for other possible choices for the longitudinal spin direction of the Lambda . This result is the most precise value obtained to date from deep-inelastic scattering with charged lepton beams, and is sensitive to polarized up quark fragmentation to hyperon states. The experimental result is found to be in general agreement with various models of the Lambda spin content, and is consistent with the assumption of helicity conservation in the fragmentation process

We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A|| in photoproduction of pairs of hadrons with high transverse momentum pT. Data were accumulated by the HERMES experiment using a 27.5 GeV polarized positron beam and a polarized hydrogen target internal to the HERA storage ring. For h^+h^- pairs with _(pT)^(h1)>1.5GeV/c and _(pT)^(h2)>1.0GeV/c, the measured asymmetry is A_(||) = -0.28±0.12(stat)±0.02(syst). This negative value is in contrast to the positive asymmetries typically measured in deep inelastic scattering from protons, and is interpreted to arise from a positive gluon polarization.

14. Nuclear effects on R=σL/σT in deep-inelastic scattering

- Abstract
A system for the online, simultaneous and intermittent analysis of blood pH, pCO pO using two-way cyclic pumping of lactate Ringer as a baseline solution is described. The multi-gas sensor is composed of a pH-ISFET with a temperature sensor, a pH-ISFET-based pCO sensor and a Clark-type pO sensor, bundled in an epoxy rod, and held in place in a flow cell which is directly connectable to an indwelling cannula. The system is controlled by a microcomputer, which supervises pump operation, temperature-compensation of sensor outputs, one-point calibration using sampled blood analysis, and provides graphical display of monitored results. Results of arterial blood-gas monitoring for mongrel dogs are presented which demonstrate the reliability of the present system over extended periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A catheter-tip pH sensor was developed for possible clinical and biomedical application, using an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (i.s.f.e.t.). Its signal drift in buffer solutions during continuous measurement was less than 3 mV in 24 h (equivalent to about 0·05 pH in 24 h). The electric insulation was perfect when soaked in buffer solutions for more than 3 months. A continuous in vivo pH measurement was successfully achieved in nonheparinised arterial blood of a japanese monkey. There was no significant sign of clot formation for 8 hours. It revealed quick responses to respiratory acidosis and alkalosis, and the observed pH values were in accordance with those confirmed by a blood pH analyser. Also, a catheter-tip pCO sensor was prepared, using the catheter-tip pH i.s.f.e.t. The response time was 2 min for a 90% change in CO tension. The muscle pCO monitoring tested with it indicated a similar result to those with medical mass spectrometer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Two new ergostane-type sterols; (22 E )-5 α ,6α-epoxyergosta-8,14,22-triene-3β,7β-diol ( 1 ) and 5α,6α-epoxyergost-8(14)-ene-3β,7α-diol ( 2 ) were isolated from the fruiting bodies of king trumpet mushroom ( Pleurotus eryngii ), along with eight known compounds ( 3 - 10 ). All isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on aromatase. Among them, 4 and 6 exhibited comparable aromatase inhibitory activities to aminoglutethimide., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

- Abstract
A methanol extract of the flowers of Mammea siamensis (Calophyllaceae) was found to inhibit enzymatic activity against aromatase (IC50=16.5 µg/mL). From the extract, two new geranylated coumarins, mammeasins C (1) and D (2), were isolated together with seven coumarins: 8-hydroxy-5-methyl-7-(3,7-dimethyl-octa-2,6-dienyl)-9-(2-methyl-1-oxobutyl)-4,5-dihydropyrano[4,3,2-de]chromen-2-one (9), 8-hydroxy-5-methyl-7-(3,7-dimethyl-octa-2,6-dienyl)-9-(3-methyl-1-oxobutyl)-4,5-dihydropyrano[4,3,2-de]chromen-2-one (10), mammeas A/AA (14), A/AB (15), A/AA cyclo D (18), E/BA (23), and E/BC cyclo D (25). The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. Among the isolates including 17 previously reported coumarins, 1 (IC50=2.7 µM), 2 (3.6 µM), and mammea B/AB cyclo D (21, 3.1 µM) showed relatively strong inhibitory activities comparable to the activity of the synthetic nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor aminoglutethimide (2.0 µM).

- Abstract
Catheter-tip sensors used to measure arterial and tissue PCO2 produced a baseline drift less than 2 torr during 1 to 5 h of monitoring. Clot formation during PaCO2 monitoring was avoided by continuous infusion of a small amount of heparin solution around the sensor. PaCO2 sometimes fluctuated periodically during spontaneous breathing but not during mechanical ventilation. Subcutaneous tissue PCO2, monitored by placing the sensor under the skin on the chest, showed an almost parallel movement to PaCO2 with a time delay of a few minutes. This PCO2 sensor was durable and accurate for up to 5 h continuous clinical monitoring.
