The measurement of various body dimensions of horses plays a significant role in quality improvement, genetic breeding, health, and soundness. There has been significant advancement in the technology for acquiring stereoscopic images with a three-dimensional (3D) scanner. This study aimed to validate the accuracy of body measurements obtained from stereoscopic images taken with a 3D scanner. We manually took the following body measurements for 8 riding horses: height at the withers, height at the back, height at the croup, chest depth, width of the chest, width of the croup, width of the waist, girth circumference, cannon circumference, and body length. Using a versatile tablet-type 3D scanning device, we captured a 3D image of each horse. Relative errors varied from −1.37% to 6.25%. Two pairs of space-resolved extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrometers working at 5–138 Å with different vertical observation ranges of −7 ≤ Z ≤ 19 and −18 ≤ Z ≤ 8 cm have been newly developed to observe the radial profile of impurity line emissions and to study the transport of high-Z impurity ions intrinsically existing in EAST tokamak plasmas. Both spectrometers are equipped with a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) detector (Andor Marana-X 4.2B-6, Oxford Instruments) with sensitive area of 13.3 × 13.3 mm2 and number of pixels equal to 2048 × 2048 (6.5 × 6.5 µm2/pixels). Compared to the currently operating space-resolved EUV spectrometers with a charge-coupled detector (CCD: 1024 × 255 pixels, 26 × 26 µm2) working at 30–520 Å, this spectrometer’s performance was substantially improved by using the CMOS detector. First, the spectral resolution measured at full width at half maximum was improved in the whole wavelength range, e.g., Δλ1/2_CMOS = 0.092 Å and Δλ1/2_CCD = 0.124 Å at C VI 33.73 Å and Δλ1/2_CMOS = 0.104 Å and Δλ1/2_CCD = 0.228 Å at Mo XXXI 115.999 Å, thus enabling a more accurate analysis of spectra with complicated structure such as tungsten unresolved transition array in the range 45–65 Å. Second, the temporal resolution was largely improved due to the high-speed data acquisition system of the CMOS detector, e.g., Δt_CMOS = 15 ms/frame and Δt_CCD = 200 ms/frame at routine operation in the radial profile measurement. Third, signal saturation issues that occurred when using the old CCD sensor during impurity accumulation now disappeared entirely using the CMOS detector due to lower exposure time at high readout rates, which largely improved the observation performance in similar impurity burst events. The above-mentioned performance improvements of the space-resolved EUV spectrometer led to a rapid change in the W XXXIII (52.22 Å) radial profile during a single cycle of low-frequency sawtooth oscillation with fst = 5–6 Hz at a sufficient detector count rate.

Magnetic-dipole (M1) lines of W29+~W39+ were successfully observed in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength range of 500–900 A in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Tungsten ions are distributed in the NBI-heated LHD plasma by injecting a pellet consisting of a small piece of tungsten metal wire enclosed by a carbon tube. It is found that W37+ line at 646.7 A and W38+ lines at 532.9 A and 559.1 A are emitted when the central electron temperature ranges from 2 to 3 keV with relatively high intensity and isolated from other intrinsic impurity lines. The result is the first observation of the M1 forbidden lines of tungsten ions in the VUV wavelength range in fusion plasma experiments. Observation of the W37+ and W38+ lines could improve the tungsten diagnostics in ITER edge plasmas because they are expected to be distributed in the edge plasmas around the last closed flux surface including the scrape-off layer in ITER.

In order to study the radial transport of tungsten ions in long-pulse H-mode discharges, a space-resolved spectrometer working at 30–520 A has been newly developed to measure a radial profile of the tungsten line emission. The spectrometer is installed behind a long extension vacuum tube connected to a horizontal midplane diagnostic port of EAST tokamak. The long distance between the plasma and spectrometer, 8835.5 mm, enables observation of the radial profile of impurity line emissions in a wide vertical range of − 8 . 5 ≤ Z ≤ 40 cm ( − 0 . 1 ≤ ρ ≤ 0 . 6 ) . A good spectral resolution of Δ λ 0 = 4 − 5 pixels at the foot position of spectral line profiles and a high spatial resolution of Δ Z = 2 . 5 cm are obtained in addition to a sufficient temporal resolution, e.g. 50 ms/frame. As a result, accurate radial profiles have been successfully obtained in EAST Ohmic and H-mode discharges for several impurity species such as carbon, oxygen, argon, iron and tungsten. The radial profiles of tungsten line emissions from W 42 + – W 45 + ions with 4p–4s transitions measured at two wavelength ranges of 45–70 A and 120–140 A are analyzed for the ion density evaluation based on the photon emissivity coefficient from ADAS database. The result shows that the density of W 43 + – W 45 + ions ranges at 2–6 × 108 cm−3 in steady H-mode discharges with T e ( 0 ) = 3 keV and n e ( 0 ) = 4 × 1013 cm−3.

In the Large Helical Device, the divertor detachment has been attempted by application of resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field and Ne gas puffing in electron cyclotron resonance- heated discharges for compatibility of high central electron temperature and low divertor heat load. Two kinds of divertor detachment phases were observed. The first one appeared transiently just after the Ne gas puffing (1st detachment), and the second one appeared steadily in the latter half of the discharge (2nd detachment). Space-resolved extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy revealed that NeVI-NeVIII emissions increased slightly outside the last closed flux surface (LCFS), while NeIX and NeX emissions increased inside the LCFS in the 1st detachment phase. Although in the 1st detachment the divertor heat load was significantly reduced, the central electron temperature also decreased because the Ne ions were penetrated inside the LCFS as a radiation source. In the 2nd detachment phase, NeVI-NeVIII emissions increased outside the LCFS while NeIX and NeX emissions kept low intensity inside the LCFS. In this phase, low divertor heat load and high central electron temperature were obtained simultaneously because the Ne ions were localized outside the LCFS as a radiation source. The profile measurements of Ne emission show that the edge island structure created by the RMP application impacts on the impurity emission distribution, where the peak of the emission shifts radially stepwise as the detachment proceeds.

The present study examined the effects of substituting kraft pulp (KP) with corn silage (CS) on dry matter intake (DMI), ruminal mat and rumen fermentation characteristics, and rumination. Four non-lactating, rumen-cannulated Holstein cows were fed a CS diet comprising 36% grass silage (GS) and 64% CS or a KP diet comprising 36% GS, 57% KP, and 7% soybean meal. DMI was significantly lower in cows fed the KP diet than in those fed the CS diet (p < 0.05), whereas rumination time did not significantly differ between the treatments. Dry matter content in the rumen immediately before and 3 h after feeding was significantly higher in cows fed the KP diet than in those fed the CS diet (p < 0.05). The consistency and thickness of the ruminal mat did not significantly differ between the treatments. The ruminal mean retention time of feed particles tended to be longer in cows fed the KP diet than in those fed the CS diet (p < 0.10). The ruminal digestion rate of KP was comparable to that of GS and CS. Because ruminal mat was formed and rumination was stimulated, KP was considered to have the equivalent physical effectiveness as CS.

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra emitted from iron and copper ions in a range of 8–500 Å and molybdenum ions in a range of 8–400 Å were measured in Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) discharges accompanied with spontaneous sputtering events, by which metallic impurity influxes are suddenly increased in the discharge. Several spectral lines from L-, M-, and N-shell partially ionized ions have been successfully observed with two EUV spectrometers named EUV_Short and EUV_Long working in wavelength ranges of 8–130 Å and 20–500 Å, respectively. The wavelength position is accurately calibrated in-situ based on several well-known spectra of low-Z impurity ions. The line identification is carefully performed based on the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST) database and previously published experimental data. As a result, it is found that B-, Be-, and Li-like iron and copper spectra Al-, Mg-, and Na-like molybdenum spectra appear in discharges with high central electron temperature (>1.8 keV). The highest ionization stages identified here are Li-like iron and copper and Na-like molybdenum, e.g. Fe XXIV at 192.028 Å (1s22p 2P3/2 → 1s22s 2S1/2), Cu XXVII at 153.513 Å (1s22p 2P3/2 → 1s22s 2S1/2) and Mo XXXII at 127.868 Å (2p63p 2P3/2 → 2p63s 2S1/2). Two unresolved transition arrays of molybdenum ions (Mo-UTAs) appear at wavelength ranges of 15–30 Å and 65–95 Å, and are preliminarily identified as Mo XX-Mo XXXII and Mo XVII-Mo XXXII, respectively. In addition, six spectral lines are newly found by comparing a time evolution of the line intensity from impurity ions in different ionization stages, i.e. Fe XVIII at 17.60 ± 0.02 Å, Cu XXI at 13.15 ± 0.02 Å, Cu XVIII at 260.32 ± 0.07 Å, Cu XVIII at 261.00 ± 0.06 Å, Mo XXVIII at 85.30 ± 0.03 Å and Mo XXIX at 89.59 ± 0.03 Å. The wavelengths of EUV spectra identified in this work are summarized in tables with transitions for each impurity species.

We compared the hair cortisol levels of lactating dairy cows in a cold- and a warm-temperate region out of four climatic zones in Japan. We simultaneously investigated the effects of calving number, lactation period and month of hair sampling. Hair of nine Holstein lactating cows chosen from each region (i.e. 18 cows per sampling) was sampled in March, June, September and December. Number of calvings (1, 2, ≥3) and lactation duration (early:100, middle: 101-200, and late:201 days) were balanced between regions. Cortisol was extracted from hair by methanol, and its level was determined with a cortisol immunoassay kit. A multi-way analysis of variance revealed that the effects of month of hair sampling (P 0.001) and its combination with region (P 0.05) were significant. In a multiple comparison test, significant differences (P 0.01) in hair cortisol level (pg/mg of hair) were found between June (13.0 ± 1.0) and the other 3 months, and between September (1.6 ± 0.2) and December (4.5 ± 0.3). The rise in cortisol level from March to June was more intense in the cold-temperate region. These results demonstrate the necessity of considering seasonal variations in each climatic region when we use hair cortisol level as an indicator of stress.

2D distribution of hydrogen/impurity radiation and impurity flow have been measured in the edge stochastic layer of LHD during detachment transition by using a newly developed visible spectrometer system with 130 channel optic fiber array. The spectrometer system views the edge region to resolve magnetic field structures, such as the divertor legs, the X-point, the stochastic layer, the last closed flux surface (LCFS), and the divertor plates. A clear upstream shift of CII and CIII emission from the divertor region to the X-point is observed at the detachment transition. The formation of volume recombination region is indicated by the increase in the ratio Hγ/Hβ, which is particularly enhanced around the LCFS. The flow speed distribution of C2+ is estimated from the Doppler shift of CIII spectra. The velocity of the order of 104m/s is obtained. A clear change of flow direction is observed with respect to the X-point and the density increase, and at the detachment transition. EAST tokamak has been equipped with upper tungsten divertor since 2014. The tungsten accumulation has been often observed in NBI-heated H-mode discharges suggesting deleterious tungsten confinement in the plasma core. It causes not only H-L back transition but also plasma disruption in several discharges. Suppression of the tungsten accumulation is therefore the most important issue in EAST to achieve a long pulse H-mode discharge. In order to study the tungsten behavior in the long pulse discharge, tungsten spectra have been measured at 20–140Å. The tungsten density, nw, is evaluated from the intensity of tungsten unresolved transition array (W-UTA) in a wavelength range of 45–70Å which is composed of several ionization stages of tungsten, e.g. W27+-W45+ at Te0∼2.5keV). It is found that the tungsten accumulation can be suppressed when the 4.6GHz LHW with PLHW∼0.8MW is superimposed on the NBI phase (PNBI= 1.9MW). During the superimposed phase the ELM frequency, fELM, increases from ∼30Hz to ∼60Hz and the tungsten density is halved compared to the NBI-heated discharge. The H-mode discharge can be thus steadily sustained for longer period. It is found that the nw is a large function of the ratio of LHW power to the total injection power, PLHW/(PLHW+PNBI), and the nw can be reduced, at least, in an order of magnitude smaller than that in NBI-heated discharges at PLHW/(PLHW+PNBI)≥0.8. Visible magnetic-dipole (M1) lines can serve as a novel diagnostic mean of tungsten in ITER and future DEMO reactors. Here a local tungsten density in core plasmas of the large helical device (LHD) is successfully assessed with the measurement of visible M1 lines emitted by W26+ and W27+. By such a measurement, (i) the radial profile of total tungsten density in the LHD core plasmas with a line-averaged electron density of ∼4 × 1019 m−3 and central electron temperature of ∼1 keV is found to be a hollow, and (ii) the total tungsten density is found to be decreased in the whole region with an increase in the electron temperature due to the onset of reheat mode. The scheme with visible M1 lines used in the present work can be also applied for the tungsten density measurement at the ITER edge plasma.

A newly developed flat-field extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrometer working at 10–130 A wavelength range with high spectral resolution and fast-time response has been developed to observe line emissions from highly ionized tungsten ions in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). This flat-field EUV spectrometer is equipped with a laminar-type varied-line-spacing (VLS) concave holographic grating (2400 grooves/mm at grating center) fixed at an angle of incidence of 88.6°, and a back-illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) with pixel numbers of 1024 × 255 (26 × 26 μ m2/pixel). The CCD is routinely operated at 5 ms per frame with full vertical binning (FVB) mode. An excellently high spectral resolution of Δ λ 0 = 4–6 pixels (full width at foot position of spectral line profile), which corresponds to full width of half maximum (FWHM) of 0.1 A at 20 A, has been obtained by carefully adjusting angles and positions of the grating and CCD. Thus, the line identification of complicated tungsten spectra became possible, when a precise wavelength calibration was done. Typical tungsten spectra are recorded at low ( T e = 1 . 0 keV) and high ( T e = 2 . 6 keV) electron temperatures . Tungsten unresolved transition arrays (W-UTA) existing at wavelength ranges of 15–35 and 45–65 A were preliminarily identified as line emissions from W 24 + –W 33 + and W 27 + –W 45 + ions, respectively, by referring to previous experimental results and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database. Developing a set of analytical computer programs, line spectra observed with the EUV spectrometer have been automatically identified after data acquisition basically for all discharges during daily EAST experiment.

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra emitted from low-Z impurity ions in the wavelength range of 10–500 Å were observed in Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) discharges. Several spectral lines from K- and L-shell partially ionized ions were successfully observed with sufficient spectral intensities and resolutions for helium, lithium, boron, carbon, oxygen, neon, silicon and argon using two fast-time-response EUV spectrometers of which the spectral intensities are absolutely calibrated based on the intensity comparison method between visible and EUV bremsstrahlung continua. The wavelength is carefully calibrated using well-known spectra. The lithium, boron and silicon are individually introduced for the wall coating of the EAST vacuum vessel to suppress mainly the hydrogen and oxygen influxes from the vacuum wall, while the carbon and oxygen intrinsically exist in the plasma. The helium is frequently used as the working gas as well as the deuterium. The neon and argon are also often used for the radiation cooling of edge plasma to reduce the heat flux onto the divertor plate. The measured spectra were analyzed mainly based on the database of National Institute of Standards and Technology. As a result, spectral lines of He II, Li II–III, B IV–V, C III–VI, O III–VIII, Ne II–X, Si V–XII, and Ar X–XVI are identified in EAST plasmas of which the central electron temperature and chord-averaged electron density range in T e0 = 0.6–2.8 keV and n e = (0.5–6.0) × 1019 m−3, respectively. The wavelengths and transitions of EUV lines identified here are summarized and listed in a table for each impurity species as the database for EUV spectroscopy using fusion plasmas.

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength spectra including line emissions released from neon (Ne) ions ranging from low to high charge states observed simultaneously in a single discharge are summarized for contribution to compile a fundamental spectral dataset for the Ne-seeded divertor heat load reduction experiments in Large Helical Device (LHD). NeIX and NeX lines were observed in the EUV wavelength range of 10∼50 Å and NeIII-NeVIII lines were observed in the VUV wavelength range of 400∼1000 Å. The temporal evolutions of the line intensities exhibited different behaviors between the edge emissions of NeIII-NeVIII with the ionization potential, Ei, of 63∼239 eV and the core emission of NeX with Ei of 1362 eV. NeIX with Ei of 1196 eV exhibited a marginal behavior between the edge emission and the core emission.

Polarization in the Lyman- α line caused by anisotropic electron collisions has been investigated in the Large Helical Device (LHD). High-sensitivity polarization-resolved measurements of the Lyman- α line from edge LHD plasma have been carried out. To obtain spectra of linearly polarized light at all angles a high-reflectivity mirror, a polarization analyzer, and a half-waveplate have been additionally installed into an existing VUV spectrometer system. These optical components have been designed and developed by the CLASP (Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro-Polarimeter) [R Kano et al. ApJL, 839(1):L10, 2017] team. The present measurement has been made during an electron cyclotron heated discharge. Intensity of the Lyman- α line integrated over line profile has been obtained and plotted as a function of time to generate temporal profile of line. The profile shows that intensity of light varies in synchronization with the angle of the observed linearly polarized light, which clearly indicates that the line is polarized. By performing least-squares fitting on the temporal profile, the magnitude of polarization degree has been evaluated to be 0.033 ± 0.004. In addition, phase analysis of the measured intensity variation has been carried out. From this analysis it has been found that the observed polarization in Lyman- α can be attributed to the anisotropic electron velocity distribution function (EVDF) at the inboard side of LHD plasma. The preliminary results of a simulation model code suggest that the value of polarization degree is negative and electron temperature in the perpendicular direction to the magnetic field is higher compared to electron temperature in the parallel direction. Therefore, the final value of polarization degree in Lyman- α is − 0.033 ± 0.004 .

We assessed the contributions of seven factors (calving number, lactation period, milk yield, body weight, body condition score, month of hair sampling, and hair color) to the hair cortisol level of lactating dairy cows. Hair of 19, 19, 19, and 21 lactating Holstein cows was sampled in January, March, June, and September, respectively. Most cows were repeatedly sampled over the four months. Cortisol was extracted from washed hair using methanol, and its level was determined using a cortisol immunoassay kit. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the month of hair sampling was significant predictor of the hair cortisol level of lactating cows (β = -0.496, t = -4.209, P < .001, partial correlation = -0.501), and milk yield was the second most associated variable (β = 0.263, t = 1.989, P = .052, partial correlation = 0.264). In a multiple comparison test, hair cortisol (pg/mg of hair) showed the highest value in June (median: 11.2, range: 7.7–17.2), followed by January (4.4, 3.1–7.2), March (2.2, 1.3–6.4), and September (1.4, 0.9–2.6). The results indicate the necessity to consider seasonal variation when we use hair cortisol level as an indicator of a lactating cow’s endocrine response to stress in a field investigation.

Two-dimensional (2-D) distribution of impurity line emissions has been measured with 2-D extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy in Large Helical Device (LHD) for studying the edge impurity transport in stochastic magnetic field layer with three-dimensional (3-D) structure. The impurity behavior in the vicinity of two X -points at inboard and outboard sides of the toroidal plasma can be separately examined with the 2-D measurement. As a result, it is found that the carbon location changes from inboard to outboard X -points when the plasma axis is shifted from R ax = 3.6 m to 3.75 m. A 3-D simulation with EMC3-EIRENE code agrees with the result at R ax = 3.75 m but disagreed with the result at R ax = 3.60 m. The discrepancy between the measurement and simulation at R ax = 3.60 m is considerably reduced when an effect of neutral hydrogen localized in the inboard side is taken into account, which can modify the density gradient and friction force along the magnetic field.

To evaluate the effect of dietary protein of diverse rumen degradability on the efficiency of metabolizable energy (ME) utilization by calves at the growth and maintenance levels of feeding. A total of 54 energy balance trials were conducted using 18 Holstein castrated male calves given four diets containing soybean meal (SBM), cottonseed meal (CSM), heated soybean meal (HSBM) and corn gluten meal (CGM) as a main source of protein. The trials were carried out at the ages of 13 weeks for the growth (G) level of feeding and 15 weeks for maintenance (M) followed by the 24-h measurement of fasting (F) heat production after 3-day fasting. The dg values were 0.657, 0.543, 0.463 and 0.413 for SBM, CSM, HSBM and CGM, respectively. The regression analyses of energy retention (ER, kJ/W0.75) on the intake of ME (IME, kJ/W0.75) above the maintenance level revealed no significant differences among diets and gave a following pooled equation: ER = 0.56(±0.04)IME – 311, r = 0.897 (P

For the first time supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) and cluster jet injection (CJI) were applied to mitigate edge-localized modes (ELMs) in HL-2A successfully. The ELM frequency increased by a factor of 2–3 and the heat flux on the divertor target plates decreased by 50% on average after SMBI or CJI. Energetic particle induced modes were observed in different frequency ranges with high-power electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). The high frequency (200–350 kHz) of the modes with a relatively small amplitude was close to the gap frequency of the toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmode. The coexistent multi-mode magnetic structures in the high-temperature and low-collision plasma could affect the plasma transport dramatically. Long-lived saturated ideal magnetohydrodynamic instabilities during strong neutral beam injection heating could be suppressed by high-power ECRH. The absolute rate of nonlinear energy transfer between turbulence and zonal flows was measured and the secondary mode competition between low-frequency (LF) zonal flows (ZFs) and geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) was identified, which demonstrated that ZFs played an important role in the L–H transition. The spontaneously generated E × B shear flow was identified to be responsible for the generation of a large-scale coherent structure (LSCS), which provided unambiguous experimental evidence for the LSCS generation mechanism. New meso-scale electric potential fluctuations (MSEFs) at frequency f ∼ 10.5 kHz with two components of n = 0 and m/n = 6/2 were also identified in the edge plasmas for the first time. The MSEFs coexisted and interacted with magnetic islands of m/n = 6/2, turbulence and LF ZFs.

Tungsten W46+ lines were successfully observed in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelength range of 7 ∼ 8 Å in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Tungsten ions are distributed in the neutral beam injection (NBI) heated LHD plasma by injecting a pellet consisting of a small piece of tungsten metal wire enclosed by a carbon tube. While the electron temperature has a sudden drop due to the pellet injection, it can be recovered by applying electron cyclotron heating (ECH) together with continuous NBI heating. It is found that a W46+ line at 7.93 Å is emitted when the central electron temperature ranges around 3.4 keV with relatively high intensity and is isolated from other intrinsic impurity lines. The 7.93 Å line consists of two lines of forbidden transitions which are blended with each other; an electric quadrupole (E2) transition at 7.928 Å and a magnetic octupole (M3) transition at 7.938 Å. Observation of W46+ lines in the stellarator experiments is reported for the first time in the present study while the lines have been already observed in several tokamak experiments. The electron temperature dependence of the emission intensity of the 7.93 Å line agreed well with that of the fractional abundance of W46+ ions calculated using the ionization and recombination rate coefficients available in the ADAS database under the assumption of the collisional ionization equilibrium. The 7.93 Å line observed in this study will be used as tools for further spectroscopic researches, such as the measurements of spatial profile of W46+ ions using a space-resolved EUV spectrometer developed in LHD.

The radial profiles of the FeXVII 3s-2p and 3d-2p transitions emitted in the wavelength range of 15 − 17 A have been observed in the Large Helical Device (LHD). The chord-integrated radial profiles are converted into radial emissivity profiles by means of Abel inversion. The emissivity ratios among FeXVII n = 3−2 transitions calculated from the radial emissivity profiles are compared with calculations based on a collisional-radiative (CR) model developed for Fe ions. The result reasonably confirms the effect of electron temperature and density on the emissivity ratio. However, the emissivity of the 3C (2p 53d 1 P 1 → 2p 6) transition is obviously lower than the prediction from the CR model. This discrepancy is consistent with measurements in the solar corona and other laboratory plasmas.

Since the 2016 Fusion Energy Conference, the HL-2A team has focused on the investigations on the following areas: (i) pedestal dynamics and L-H transition, (ii) techniques of ELM control, (iii) turbulence and transport, (iv) energetic particle physics. The HL-2A results demonstrated that the increase of mean shear flow plays a key role in triggering L-I and I-H transitions, while the change of flow is mainly induced by the ion pressure gradient. Both mitigation and suppression of ELMs were realized by laser blow-off seeded impurity (Al, Fe, W). The 30% Ne mixture supersonic molecular beam injection seeding also robustly induced ELM mitigation. The ELMs were mitigated by low-hybrid current drive. The stabilization of m/n = 1/1 ion fishbone activities by electron cyclotron resonance heating was found on the HL-2A. A new m/n = 2/1 ion fishbone activity was observed recently, and the modelling indicated that passing fast ions dominantly contribute to the driving of 2/1 fishbone. The non-linear coupling between the toroidal Alfven eigenmode and tearing mode (TM) led to the generation of a high frequency mode with the toroidal mode number n = 0. The turbulence was modulated by TM when the island width exceeds a threshold and the modulation is localized merely in the inner area of the islands. Meanwhile, turbulence radial spread took place across the island region.

We have investigated the polarization of the Lyman-α line due to anisotropic electron collisions in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Optical components provided by the CLASP (Chromospheric Lyman-αlpha Spectro-Polarimeter) project [Kano R 2017 ApJL 839 L10] team have been incorporated into a VUV spectrometer so that linearly polarized light spectra at different angles can be obtained sequentially. The steady-state phase of an ECH (electron cyclotron heating) discharge has been analyzed, and it is confirmed that the Lyman-α line is polarized. From a temporal variation analysis of the intensity, integrated over the line profile, the polarization degree is evaluated to be 3.4%. A simple theoretical model calculation shows that this polarization degree can be explained by approximately 10% anisotropy in the electron temperature between the parallel and perpendicular directions with respect to the magnetic field.

A space-resolved VUV spectroscopy using a 3 m normal incidence spectrometer is utilized to measure the impurity emission profile in the edge and divertor plasmas of the Large Helical Device in the wavelength range of 300 - 3200 Å. The ion temperatures derived from the Doppler profile fitting for the spectra of carbon CII 1335.71 × 2 Å, CIII 977.02 × 2 Å, and CIV 1548.20 × 2 Å are comparable to ionization potential for each charge state. The vertical profile of the ion temperature measured from CIV line has higher values in the edge observation chords compared to those in the central chords.

Tungsten ion densities are determined by measuring radial profiles of line emissions in LHD. Zn-(W44+) and Cu-like (W45+) ion densities are determined from line emission at 60.9 Å and 127.0 Å, respectively. Ion densities of W24+, W25+ and W26+ are also determined from tungsten pseudo-continuum (a so-called unresolved transition array (UTA)) at 29-33 Å. Observations of magnetic dipole (M1) forbidden lines at 3377Å enable evaluation of the ion density of W27+. In EAST tokamak the tungsten concentration is estimated by a combination of the UTA and total radiation loss. In HL-2A the tungsten influx is evaluated from line emission of W6+ ions at 216.2 Å and 261.4 Å, which are measured during the tungsten reappearance phase after tungsten laser blow-off. All these results demonstrate a good approach towards quantitative tungsten analysis.

We have investigated the polarization of Lyman-α line in the Large Helical Device (LHD). A theoretical model has been developed for a quantitative understanding of the anisotropy in the electron velocity distribution function (EVDF). The present model treats an anisotropic EVDF having different electron temperatures in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. The steady-state time period of an electron cyclotron heated discharge has been analyzed and the comparison between the theoretical and measured polarization degrees suggests that in the edge plasma the difference between these two temperatures is approximately 10%. In addition, the dependence of the observed Lyman-α intensity on the angle of the linearly polarized light has been studied. The obtained results show that in the experimentally observed intensity the inboard side emission dominates over the emission from the outboard side and in the edge LHD plasma the electron temperature in the perpendicular direction to the magnetic field is higher than that in the parallel direction.

UV-visible spectra of the radiation from hydrogen pellet ablation clouds have been measured in the Large Helical Device. The temporal development of the Balmer-α line intensity shows a peaked profile with FWHM (full width at half maximum) of approximately 150 μs. The electron temperature Te, electron density ne, and plasma volume V are evaluated by fitting of the measured spectra with a complete LTE (local thermodynamic equilibrium) model. The results shows that Te is almost unchanged, while ne and V increases and decreases monotonically, respectively, in the dominant time period around the intensity peak. The same analyses made for several different magnetic configurations have revealed that ne has a tendency to become higher when the magnetic field strength is higher, while no clear dependence on the magnetic axis position has been observed. On the other hand, Te shows little dependence either on the magnetic field strength or the magnetic axis position.

Space-resolved vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopy using a 3-m normal incidence spectrometer is utilized to measure the impurity emission profile in the edge and divertor plasmas of the Large Helical Device (LHD). It measures the vertical profile of VUV lines emitted in the wavelength range of 300–3200 °A. CII, CIII, CIV, and CV lines emitted from carbon ions are successfully measured, and their ion temperatures are derived from the Doppler broadening. Vertical profiles of the emission intensity and the ion temperature are measured simultaneously for the CIV line. The emission intensity profile, which has several peak structures, is reasonably explained by considering the relation between the C3+ ion distribution and the geometry used for the observations.

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy has been developed for impurity diagnostics in HL-2A tokamak. The EUV spectrometer consists of an entrance slit, a holographic varied-line-space (VLS) grating, a back-illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) and a laser light source for optical alignment. Spectral lines in wavelength region of 20-500 A observed from HL-2A plasmas were analyzed to study the impurity behavior. Spectral and temporal resolutions used for the analysis were 0.19 A at CV (2×33.73 A) and 6 ms, respectively. It was found that carbon, oxygen and iron impurities were usually dominant in the HL-2A plasma. They almost disappeared when the siliconization was carried out. Although the EUV spectra were entirely replaced by the silicon emissions just after the siliconization, the emissions were considerably decreased with accumulation of discharges. Aluminum and neon were externally introduced into the HL-2A plasma based on laser blow-off (LBO) and supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) techniques for a trial of the impurity transport study, respectively. The preliminary result is presented for time behavior of EUV spectral lines.
