The vigorous development of the Internet has made it into an indispensable part of consumers’ lives. Many companies and individuals are exploiting online video marketing by establishing brand channels or personal channels in order to voice their own brands, integrate marketing content, expand the scope of publicity, attract more customers, improve the market presence and increase market share to open up greater business opportunities. Placement marketing refers to the natural integration of products into content in an attempt to persuade consumers in a less aggressive way than traditional marketing, lead consumers to unconsciously accept product information, affect consumer decisions and achieve the effect of advertising. If able to more efficiently embed placement marketing content into the large amounts of micro movies can significantly reduce the cost of manpower and money. It will get better viewing or advertising effects. Therefore, this study proposes a real-time interactive micro movie placement marketing system based on discrete-event simulation. The proposed system can use the content in the storyboard, such as the character dialogue, narration, caption, background music, shot changes and scene descriptions, to accurately retrieve micro movie content for event-driven placement marketing of commercial micro movies.

Advances in computer technology have led to growing demand for large high-resolution screens in environments such as large plazas, window displays and smart homes. However, large screens are limited, are difficult to move and are very expensive. Therefore, this study proposes a large dynamic tiled display system that uses all kinds of small- or mid-sized screens with mini PCs or smart devices to dynamically tile an oversized display. Each screen communicates with Ethernet or wireless network. The contribution of this study is to propose a large dynamic tiled display system. The research results show three advantages of the proposed system: (1) It has low cost, as it can use multiple small- or medium-sized screens forming a large dynamic tiled display. (2) It is practical, using portable devices with Wi-Fi, multimedia features and user-friendly interfaces. These features increase the system’s popularity and improve its application. (3) The modular and flexible system architecture can be extended to embedded systems and next-generation display monitors.

Social media enables government to discover events in real time, and forecast public opinion. This study presents a system prototype for measuring public opinion from News channels, Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) and social networking sites, including Facebook. The proposed system aims to improve communication between government officials and ordinary citizens about service delivery. The proposed system applies event-driven simulation to accelerate the processing speed, and thus provides a better solution for measuring public opinion.

This study employed an eye tracking technology to explore university students’ visual attention and learning performance while learning Japanese using an interactive manga-based e-book. The developed e-book consisted of 8 pages accompanied by 13 annotations with both text and graphical formats. The subjects consisted of 60 students whose eye movements were tracked and recorded by the eye tracking system. These students came from the applied foreign language department in a northern university in Taiwan, of which 30 were assigned to high prior knowledge (PK) group and the other 30 were assigned to low PK group. Eye tracking measurements, including total contact time, number of fixations, latency of first fixation, and number of clicks on the defined regions of interest of the two groups were compared to indicate their visual attention. The results revealed that overall students spent more time on reading text and annotation than graphic information. The high PK students showed longer fixation durations on the texts, while the low PK students showed longer fixation durations on the graphics and annotations. Meanwhile, the low PK students used more clicks to look up underlined annotations whenever they didn’t know words or phrases on the e-book. In addition, with respect to the latency of the first fixation, the graphic captured the attention faster than the text because of the size and its appeal to the students. Further analysis of saccade paths indicated that the low PK students showed more inter-scanning transitions not only between the text dialog and the annotation zone but also within annotation zone. Finally, the results of reading comprehension pretest and posttest found that there was a significant difference in learning outcomes between each PK group.

Finding new more efficient methods for automatic classification and retrieval of a large number of multimedia files will significantly reduce manpower costs. However, most current video content analysis methods adopt low-level features to analyze video frame by frame, and need to improve high-level semantic analysis on a number of issues. Hence, this study presents a storyboard-based accurate automatic summary video editing system that uses storyboard information, such as character dialogue, narration, caption, background music and shot changes, to enable accurate video content retrieval and automatic render summary videos. The proposed system can be applied to the course video trailer and the commercial video trailer for quick preview video content or suitable viewing configuration for smart mobile devices. Consequently, the audience can quickly understand the whole video story and the video editors can substantially reduce the time taken to publish videos.

With the rapid development of information technology and social networking, collaborative efforts are usually required to build the consensus for some transdisciplinary projects. Therefore, the collaborative ability becomes an indispensable ability to maintain competitiveness for individuals. This study proposes a CBR-based approach to enhance the students’ collaborative design abilities by utilizing domain knowledge and previous user experience. The experiment has been done in new media capstone project to evaluate the performance of this approach.

The modern digital photography equipment for shooting an image only records the attribute information and shooting data of the digital image, and does not include information such as weather conditions at the time for retrieval. Even photos taken by new-generation smart devices and more than high-end digital cameras only record GPS (Global Positioning System) information for review and application on the map. Therefore, this study presents a memory-friendly life film editing system to record a user’s video, time, location (GPS coordinates), and event (synchronizing electronic calendar or daily fascinating notes in a day). The information is automatically imported into the video diary modified by the storyboard. The user is free to enter interesting events in the memo, and use this information to perform accurate recall video retrieval. The automatic life film editing system can freely select the time, location, or events to retrieve all eligible recall videos, then select the desired recall videos and time slice to export a life film for viewing.

A good doctor must do a deep understanding of the needs of patients. Doctors must listen into the patient illnesses overview, as well as to understand the cause of the patient based on the patient's background. In recent years, the major of Medicine have to import "standardized patients (SP)" courses. Out of the program, practical experience, and quickly determine the SP is urgently needed resources to treatment. In this research, the main use of the Kinect device to detect the SP in performing the action is consistent performances. Use of SP script This device records all joint action performances circumstances, further analysis of previous SP to participate in the screenplay. Each practice will be recorded this way to achieve the goal of each performance consistently. When the formal performance, not because of lack of practice, no guidance caused in performances on SP error or script misunderstanding. This system allows SP when performing a full practice, to avoid the error cause unable to in line with the theme of the performances.

The electro-elastic stress investigation on the interaction between a screw dislocation and a half-plane trimaterial composite composed of three bonded dissimilar transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials is analyzed in the framework of linear piezoelectricity. Each layer is assumed to have the same material orientation with x3 in the poling direction. The dislocations are characterized by a discontinuous displacement and electric potential across the slip plane and are subjected to a line force and a line charge at the core. Based on the complex variable and the method of alternating technique, the solution of electric field and displacement field is expressed in terms of explicit series form. The solutions derived here can be applied to a variety of problems, for example, a half-plane bimaterial, a quarter-plane bimaterial, a quarter-plane material and a rectangular strip etc. Numerical results are provided to show the influences of the material combinations and geometric configurations on the electro-elastic fields and image force calculated through the generalized Peach-Koehler formula. The solutions proposed here can be served as Green’s functions for the analyses corresponding piezoelectric cracking problems.

The interaction problem between a screw dislocation and a piezoelectric fiber composite with a semi-infinite wedge crack is investigated in this paper. The piezoelectric media are assumed to be transversely isotropic with the poling direction along the x 3 direction. The screw dislocation considered here involves a Burgers vector parallel to the poling direction with a line force and a line charge being applied at the core of the dislocation. Both cases of the screw dislocation located at the matrix and inclusion are observed. The analytical derivation is based on the complex variable and the conformal mapping methods. The exact solutions are obtained to calculate the forces on the dislocation and the crack-tip stress and electric displacement intensity factors. Based on these results, the anti-shielding and shielding effects for different loadings, material combinations, and geometric configurations are discussed in detail.

In this article, a novel piezoelectric cantilever bimorph micro transducer electro-mechanical energy conversion model is proposed. Based on the curvature basis approach, the relationship between the deduced voltage and the mechanical strain induced piezoelectric polarization is formulated. In addition to the working equation for piezoelectric sensors, the damping effect is included to enable the resonance frequency, the maximum induced voltage at the resonance, the conversion energy density and the dimensions of the piezoelectric micro power generator to be analytically estimated. The analytical model shows that the vibration-induced voltage is proportional to the excitation frequency and the width of the device but is inversely proportional to the length of the cantilever beam and the damping factor. To verify the theoretical analysis, two micro transducer clusters are fabricated. The experimental results demonstrate that the maximum output voltage coincides with the energy conversion analytical model.

A systematic approach to achieving high quality gapless microlens array fabrication using the incomplete developing and thermal reflow process was developed in this study. The experimental results proved that a hexagonal microlens array with a maximum 100% fill-factor could be successfully produced. The major objective in using this robust design is to reduce the variations in microlens array focal length, allowing improved focus and enhanced illumination brightness. In this experiment, the Taguchi method was used first to perform an efficient experimental design and analyze the robustness of the microlens array fabrication process. Several parameters affect microlens array uniformity; the hexagonal column diagonal, spin coating revolution speed, exposure time, developing time, and reflow temperature. It is very important to control these parameters to decrease the sensitivity to noise. Therefore an artificial neural network (ANN) was used to minimize the variation and make the microlens array less sensitive to process variation. The L18 orthogonal array was used as the learning data for the ANN to construct an ANN model that could predict the parameters at nondiscrete levels. The results showed the microlens array quality was significantly improved compared with the original design. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This demonstration aims to construct an interactive multimedia learning platform for ecology education, which allows young children to learn interactively through the virtual reality of digital media. This enhanced learning experience integrates augmented reality (AR) and Arduino features, and utilizes digital animation design software and 3D technologies to design a sequence of AR markers based on the growth of plants. Learners can use a webcam to capture AR marker information and generate three-dimensional objects and media on-screen. With changes or angle tilt of the AR marker, users can interact directly with the 3D objects and learn about plant growth through this virtual reality platform.

This research–based design project harnesses the intrinsic capacity of interactive multimedia design and digital technology to construct an awareness of cultural environments, using both visual and aural forms as a way to understand, act out, look upon, search for, and interrogate representations of contemporary culture. We established an implemental system in this study, using Wikipedia's Wiki platform, Radio Aporee, and Panoramio, with which users can participate in life archiving and getting knowledge through a data–sharing–and–collecting platform. Users contribute and interact with the data, enabling conceptualisation of the production of knowledge as a relative process involving interdependent correlations of human knowledge. The scope is opened up for live archiving, integration with wide data sources, and the breaking down of the barriers of knowledge, and a new sense of materiality, meaning, audienceship, and authorship is provoked. We demonstrate our system with a case study presentation of Tai–Pin Old Street in Taiwan.

Since the problems in bioinformatics are related to massive computing and massive data. In recent years, due to distributed computing is gaining recognition. The task originally requiring high computing power does not only rely on supercomputer. Distributed computing used off-the-shelf PC with high speed network can offer low cost and high performance computing power to handle the task. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to implement a complete distributed computing platform based on peer-to-peer file sharing technology. The platform integrated scheduling, load balancing, file sharing, maintenance of data integrity, and user-friendly interface etc. functions. Through the platform can assist bioinformaticists in massive computing and massive data problems. Besides, the platform is easier use, more reliable, and more helpful than others for researchers to conduct bioinformatics research.

Cancer has now become the major disease threatening people's health. That is why research on the factor causing cancer has become significant. Although biomedical researchers can obtain a lot of related biomedical literature through a search engine, they also have to face the problem of information overload as well. We propose an intelligent agent system regarding the data mining of biomedical literature, hoping to provide assistance. According to the type of cancer user enter, the system will automatically combine it with LOH (loss of heterozygosity) or CGH (comparative genomic hybridization), and then search for related biomedical literatures from the PubMed. And then the retrieved literatures will be categorized using the decision tree, with which the cancer-related genes can be mined at the same time. The method can help mine important information from biomedical literatures and thus helps users to gain quick and easy access to important information. Also, this method can be applied to other diseases.
