With the deployment of satellite constellations, Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices in remote areas have gained access to low-cost network connectivity. In this paper, we investigate the performance of IoT devices connecting in up-link through low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO) links. We model the dynamic LEO satellite constellation using the stochastic geometry method and provide an analysis of end-to-end availability with low-complexity and coverage performance estimates for the mentioned link. Based on the analytical expressions derived in this research, we make a sound investigation on the impact of constellation configuration, transmission power, and the relative positions of IoT devices and GEO satellites on end-to-end performance.

6G networks are envisioned to deliver a large diversity of applications and meet stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements. Hence, integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (TN-NTNs) are anticipated to be key enabling technologies. However, the TN-NTNs integration faces a number of challenges that could be addressed through network virtualization technologies such as Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and network slicing. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review on the adaptation of these networking paradigms in 6G networks. We begin with a brief overview on NTNs and virtualization techniques. Then, we highlight the integral role of Artificial Intelligence in improving network virtualization by summarizing major research areas where AI models are applied. Building on this foundation, the survey identifies the main issues arising from the adaptation of SDN, NFV, and network slicing in integrated TN-NTNs, and proposes a taxonomy of integrated TN-NTNs virtualization offering a thorough review of relevant contributions. The taxonomy is built on a four-level classification indicating for each study the level of TN-NTNs integration, the used virtualization technology, the addressed problem, the type of the study and the proposed solution, which can be based on conventional or AI-enabled methods. Moreover, we present a summary on the simulation tools commonly used in the testing and validation of such networks. Finally, we discuss open issues and give insights on future research directions for the advancement of integrated TN-NTNs virtualization in the 6G era.

Information technology organizations and companies are seeking greener alternatives to traditional terrestrial data centers to mitigate global warming and reduce carbon emissions. Currently, terrestrial data centers consume a significant amount of energy, estimated at about 1.5% of worldwide electricity use. Furthermore, the increasing demand for data-intensive applications is expected to raise energy consumption, making it crucial to consider sustainable computing paradigms. In this study, we propose a data center-enabled High Altitude Platform (HAP) system, where a flying data center supports the operation of terrestrial data centers. We conduct a detailed analytical study to assess the energy benefits and communication requirements of this approach. Our findings demonstrate that a data center-enabled HAP is more energy-efficient than a traditional terrestrial data center, owing to the naturally low temperature in the stratosphere and the ability to harvest solar energy. Adopting a data center-HAP can save up to 14% of energy requirements while overcoming the offloading outage problem and the associated delay resulting from server distribution. Our study highlights the potential of a data center-enabled HAP system as a sustainable computing solution to meet the growing energy demands and reduce carbon footprint.

Terrestrial data centers suffer from a growing carbon footprint that could contribute with $14\%$ to global CO2 emissions by 2040. High Altitude Platform (HAP) is a promising airborne technology that can unleash the computing frontier in the stratospheric range by hosting a flying data center. HAP systems can endorse the sustainable green operation of data centers thanks to the naturally low atmospheric temperature that saves cooling energy and its large surface that can host solar panels covering energy requirements. Throughout this article, we define the operation limitations of this innovative solution and study the energy-efficiency-related trade-offs. Then, we shed light on the significance of the scalability of the data center-enabled HAP architecture by investigating potential bottlenecks and proposing different deployment scenarios to avoid network congestion. We also highlight the importance of the management agility of the data center-enabled HAP system by defining effective management techniques that yield high-performing data centers. Our results demonstrate that deploying a single data center-enabled HAP can save $12\%$ of the electricity costs.

Facing a vast amount of connections, huge performance demands, and the need for reliable connectivity, the sixth generation of communication networks (6G) is envisioned to implement disruptive technologies that jointly spur connectivity, performance, and reliability. In this context, this paper proposes, and evaluates the benefit of, a hybrid central cloud (CC) computing and mobile edge computing (MEC) platform, especially introduced to balance the network resources required for joint computation and communication. Consider a hybrid cloud and MEC system, where several power-hungry multi-antenna unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are deployed at the cell-edge to boost the CC connectivity and relieve part of its computation burden. While the multi-antenna base stations are connected to the cloud via capacity-limited fronthaul links, the UAVs serve the cell-edge users with limited power and computational capabilities. The paper then considers the problem of maximizing the weighted network sum-rate subject to per-user delay, computational capacity, and power constraints, so as to determine the beamforming vectors and computation allocations. Such intricate non-convex optimization problem is tackled using an iterative algorithm that relies on $\ell_0$-norm relaxation, successive convex approximation, and fractional programming, and has the compelling ability to be implemented in a distributed fashion across the multiple UAVs and the CC. The cold-start problem has been commonly recognized in recommendation systems and studied by following a general idea to leverage the abundant interaction records of warm users to infer the preference of cold users. However, the performance of these solutions is limited by the amount of records available from warm users to use. Thus, building a recommendation system based on few interaction records from a few users still remains a challenging problem for unpopular or early-stage recommendation platforms. This paper focuses on solving the few-shot recommendation problem for news recommendation based on two observations. First, news at different platforms (even in different languages) may share similar topics. Second, the user preference over these topics is transferable across different platforms. Therefore, we propose to solve the few-shot news recommendation problem by transferring the user-news preference from a many-shot source domain to a few-shot target domain. To bridge two domains that are even in different languages and without any overlapping users and news, we propose a novel unsupervised cross-lingual transfer model as the news encoder that aligns semantically similar news in two domains. A user encoder is constructed on top of the aligned news encoding and transfers the user preference from the source to target domain. The integration between the satellite network and the terrestrial network will play a key role in the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) of mobile cellular networks thanks to the wide coverage and bandwidth offered by satellite networks. To leverage this integration, we propose a proactive traffic offloading scheme in an integrated multi-satellite terrestrial network (IMSTN) that considers the future networks' heterogeneity and predicts their variability. Our proposed offloading scheme hinges on traffic prediction to answer the stringent requirements of data-rate, latency and reliability imposed by heterogeneous and coexisting services and traffic namely enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine-type communications (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). However, the fulfilment of these requirements during offloading in dynamic IMSTN comes at the expense of significant energy consumption and introduces inherently supplementary latency. Therefore, our offloading scheme aims to balance the fundamental trade-offs first between energy consumption and the achievable data-rate and second between energy consumption and latency while meeting the respective needs of the present traffic. Our findings prove the importance of the cooperation between the multi-satellite network and the terrestrial network conditioned by traffic prediction to enhance the performance of IMTSN in terms of latency and energy consumption.

Wireless traffic prediction is essential for cellular networks to realize intelligent network operations, such as load-aware resource management and predictive control. Existing prediction approaches usually adopt centralized training architectures and require the transferring of huge amounts of traffic data, which may raise delay and privacy concerns for certain scenarios. In this work, we propose a novel wireless traffic prediction framework named \textit{Dual Attention-Based Federated Learning} (FedDA), by which a high-quality prediction model is trained collaboratively by multiple edge clients. To simultaneously capture the various wireless traffic patterns and keep raw data locally, FedDA first groups the clients into different clusters by using a small augmentation dataset. Then, a quasi-global model is trained and shared among clients as prior knowledge, aiming to solve the statistical heterogeneity challenge confronted with federated learning. To construct the global model, a dual attention scheme is further proposed by aggregating the intra- and inter-cluster models, instead of simply averaging the weights of local models. We conduct extensive experiments on two real-world wireless traffic datasets and results show that FedDA outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) is regarded as one of the most promising techniques to provide intelligent services under strict privacy protection regulations for multiple clients. By applying DAI, training on raw data is carried out locally, while the trained outputs, e.g., model parameters, from multiple local clients, are sent back to a central server for aggregation. Recently, for achieving better practicality, DAI is studied in conjunction with wireless communication networks, incorporating various random effects brought by wireless channels. However, because of the complex and case-dependent nature of wireless channels, a generic simulator for applying DAI in wireless communication networks is still lacking. To accelerate the development of DAI applied in wireless communication networks, we propose a generic system design in this paper as well as an associated simulator that can be set according to wireless channels and system-level configurations. Details of the system design and analysis of the impacts of wireless environments are provided to facilitate further implementations and updates. We employ a series of experiments to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed system design and reveal its superior scalability.

Augmenting ground-level communications with flying networks, such as the high-altitude platform system (HAPS), is among the major innovative initiatives of the next generation of wireless systems (6G). Given HAPS quasi-static positioning at the stratosphere, HAPS-to-ground and HAPS-to-air connectivity frameworks are expected to be prolific in terms of data acquisition and computing, especially given the mild weather and quasi-constant wind speed characteristics of the stratospheric layer. This paper explores the opportunities stemming from the realization of cloud-enabled HAPS in the context of telecommunications applications and services. The paper first advocates for the potential physical advantages of deploying HAPS as flying data-centers, also known as super-macro base stations. The paper then describes various cloud services that can be offered from the HAPS and the merits that can be achieved by this integration, such as enhancing the quality, speed, and range of the offered services. The proposed services span a wide range of fields, including satellites, Internet of Things (IoT), ad hoc networks (such as sensor; vehicular; and aerial networks), gaming, and social networks. For each service, the paper illustrates the methods that would be used by cloud providers to offload the service data to the HAPS and enable the cloud customers to consume the service. The paper further sheds light on the challenges that need to be addressed for realizing practical cloud-enabled HAPS, mainly, those related to high energy, processing power, quality of service (QoS), and security considerations. In this article, we present the analysis of the digital divide to illustrate the unfair access to the benefits brought by information and communications technology (ICT) over the globe and provide our solution termed big communications (BigCom) to close the digital divide and democratize the benefits of ICT. To facilitate the implementation of BigCom, we give a complete framework of BigCom considering both technological and non-technological factors as well as a set of suggestions for content providers, mobile network operators, and governments. By implementing BigCom, we aim to connect the last four billion unconnected people living in far-flung and underdeveloped areas and achieve the goal of global and ubiquitous connectivity for everyone in the 6G era.

The digital divide restricting the access of people living in developing areas to the benefits of modern information and communications technologies has become a major challenge and research focus. To well understand and finally bridge the digital divide, we first need to discover a proper measure to characterize and quantify the telecommunication service imbalance. In this regard, we propose a fine-grained and easy-to-compute imbalance index, aiming to quantitatively link the relation among telecommunication service imbalance, telecommunication infrastructure, and demographic distribution. The mathematically elegant and generic form of the imbalance index allows consistent analyses for heterogeneous scenarios and can be easily tailored to incorporate different telecommunication policies and application scenarios. Based on this index, we also propose an infrastructure resource deployment strategy by minimizing the average imbalance index of any geographical segment. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed imbalance index by showing a high degree of correlation to existing congeneric but coarse-grained measures and the superiority of the infrastructure resource deployment strategy.

In this letter, we propose a power allocation scheme for relayed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) systems. The proposed power allocation scheme replies on artificial neural network (ANN) and deep learning to allocate transmit power among various subcarriers at the source and relay nodes. The objective of the power allocation scheme is to minimize the overall transmit power under a set of constraints. Without loss of generality, we assume all subcarriers at source and relay nodes are independently distributed with different statistical distribution parameters. The relay node adopts the fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (FG AF) relaying protocol. We employ the adaptive moment estimation method (Adam) to implement back-propagation learning and simulate the proposed power allocation scheme. The analytical and simulation results show that the proposed power allocation scheme is able to provide comparable performance as the optimal solution but with lower complexity.

Hardware distortions (HWD) render drastic effects on the performance of communication systems. They are recently proven to bear asymmetric signatures; and hence can be efficiently mitigated using improper Gaussian signaling (IGS), thanks to its additional design degrees of freedom. Discrete asymmetric signaling (AS) can practically realize the IGS by shaping the signals' geometry or probability. In this paper, we adopt the probabilistic shaping (PS) instead of uniform symbols to mitigate the impact of HWD and derive the optimal maximum a posterior detector. Then, we design the symbols' probabilities to minimize the error rate performance while accommodating the improper nature of HWD. Although the design problem is a non-convex optimization problem, we simplified it using successive convex programming and propose an iterative algorithm. We further present a hybrid shaping (HS) design to gain the combined benefits of both PS and geometric shaping (GS). Finally, extensive numerical results and Monte-Carlo simulations highlight the superiority of the proposed PS over conventional uniform constellation and GS. Viral spread has been intermittently threatening human life over time. Characterizing the viral concentration and modelling the viral transmission are, therefore, considered major milestones for enhancing viral detection capabilities. This paper addresses the problem of viral aerosol detection based on the exhaled breath in a bounded environment, e.g., a bounded room. The paper models the exhaled breath as a cloud which is emitted through the room continuously, and analyzes the temporal-spatial virus concentration by accounting for partial absorption and reflection at each side of the room. The paper first derives a closed form expression of the temporal-spatial virus concentration. It then considers the deployment of a receiver composed of an air sampler and a bio-sensor to detect the viral existence of a specific virus. We, therefore, assess the detection capabilities of the proposed system via evaluating the viral miss-detection probability as a function of the sampling volume and the detection time-instance at the receiver side. Our numerical simulations verify the validity of the analytical results, and illustrate the ability of the proposed system to detect viruses in indoor environments. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) manifests its superior nature of high spectral efficiency (SE) and low complexity for signal estimation. To exploit the spatial gain of OFDM-SNM, we propose a relay assisted OFDM-SNM scheme for multi-hop cooperative systems in this letter. It is stipulated that a relay operated by decode-and-forward (DF) and half-duplex (HD) protocols exists in each hop. We analyze the outage performance of the relay assisted OFDM-SNM system. The average outage probability is approximated in closed form. Moreover, to reveal the diversity and coding gains of relay assisted OFDM-SNM, we explore the asymptotic outage performance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by power series expansion. To verify the improvement on outage performance and energy efficiency, we carry out the comparison among different multi-hops systems with traditional OFDM-SNM fixing a certain distance from source to destination. Simulation results corroborate the derived outage probabilities and provide insight into the proposed system in this letter.

To broaden the application scenario and reduce energy consumption, we propose an energy-efficient fixed-gain (FG) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay assisted orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) scheme in this letter. The proposed system needs neither instantaneous channel state information (CSI) nor complicated processing at the relay node. It operates based on the power allocation scheme that minimizes the sum of transmit power at both source and relay node, given an outage probability constraint. Through a series of problem transformation and simplification, we convert the original power allocation problem to its relaxed version and solve it using convex programming techniques. To reveal the computing efficiency of the proposed power allocation scheme, we analyze its computational complexity. Numerical simulations substantiate that the proposed optimization scheme has a neglectable loss compared with the brute force search, but the computational complexity can be considerably reduced.

In this paper, we propose studying the disease spread mechanism in the atmosphere as an engineering problem. Aerosol transmission is the most significant mode among the viral transmission mechanisms that do not include physical contact, where airflows carry virus-laden droplets over long distances. Throughout this work, we study the transport of these droplets as a molecular communication problem, where one has no control over the transmission source, but a robust receiver can be designed using bio-sensors. To this end, we present a complete system model and derive an end-to-end mathematical model for the transmission channel under certain constraints and boundary conditions. We derive the system response for both continuous sources such as breathing and jet or impulsive sources such as coughing and sneezing. In addition to transmitter and channel, we assumed a receiver architecture composed of air sampler and Silicon Nanowire field-effect transistor. Then, we formulate a detection problem to maximize the likelihood decision rule and minimize the corresponding missed detection probability. Finally, we present several numerical results to observe the impact of parameters that affect the performance and justify the feasibility of the proposed setup in related applications.

The deviation of continuous and discrete complex random variables from the traditional proper and symmetric assumption to a generalized improper and asymmetric characterization (accounting correlation between a random entity and its complex conjugate), respectively, introduces new design freedom and various potential merits. As such, the theory of impropriety has vast applications in medicine, geology, acoustics, optics, image and pattern recognition, computer vision, and other numerous research fields with our main focus on the communication systems. The journey begins from the design of improper Gaussian signaling in the interference-limited communications and leads to a more elaborate and practically feasible asymmetric discrete modulation design. Such asymmetric shaping bridges the gap between theoretically and practically achievable limits with sophisticated transceiver and detection schemes in both coded/uncoded wireless/optical communication systems. Interestingly, introducing asymmetry and adjusting the transmission parameters according to some design criterion render optimal performance without affecting the bandwidth or power requirements of the systems. Next-generation communication networks are expected to integrate newly-used technologies in a smart way to ensure continuous connectivity in rural areas and to alleviate the traffic load in dense regions. The prospective access network in 6G should hinge on satellite systems to take advantage of their wide coverage and high capacity. However, adopting satellites in 6G could be hindered because of the additional latency introduced, which is not tolerable by all traffic types. Therefore, we propose a traffic offloading scheme that integrates both the satellite and terrestrial networks to smartly allocate the traffic between them while satisfying different traffic requirements. Specifically, the proposed scheme offloads the Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) traffic to the terrestrial backhaul to satisfy its stringent latency requirement. However, it offloads the enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) traffic to the satellite since eMBB needs high data rates but is not always sensitive to delay. Our scheme is shown to reduce the transmission delay of URLLC packets, decrease the number of dropped eMBB packets, and hence improve the network's availability. Our findings highlight that the inter-working between satellite and terrestrial networks is crucial to mitigate the expected high load on the limited terrestrial capacity.

This work considers the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over a predefined area to serve a number of ground users. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the network,the UAVs may cause severe interference to the transmissions of each other. Hence, a judicious design of the user-UAV association and UAV locations is desired. A potential game is defined where the players are the UAVs. The potential function is the total sum-rate of the users. The agents utility in the potential games is their marginal contribution to the global welfare or their so-called wonderful life utility. A game-theoretic learning algorithm, binary log-linear learning (BLLL), is then applied to the problem. Given the potential game structure, a consequence of our utility design, the stochastically stable states using BLLL are guaranteed to be the potential maximizers. Hence, we optimally solve the user-UAV association and 3D-location problem. Next, we exploit the sub-modular features of the sum rate function for a given configuration of UAVs to design an efficient greedy algorithm. Despite the simplicity of the greedy algorithm, it comes with a guaranteed performance of $1-1/e$ of the optimal solution. To further reduce the number of iterations, we propose another heuristic greedy algorithm that provides very good results. Internet of underwater things (IoUT) is a technological revolution that could mark a new era for scientific, industrial, and military underwater applications. To mitigate the hostile underwater channel characteristics, this paper hybridizes underwater acoustic and optical wireless communications to achieve a ubiquitous control and high-speed low-latency networking performance, respectively. Since underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC) suffers from limited range, it requires effective multi-hop routing solutions. In this regard, we propose a Sector-based Opportunistic Routing (SectOR) protocol. Unlike the traditional routing (TR) techniques which unicast packets to a unique relay, opportunistic routing (OR) targets a set of candidate relays by leveraging the broadcast nature of the UOWC channel. OR improves the packet delivery ratio as the likelihood of having at least one successful packet reception is much higher than that in conventional unicast routing. Contingent upon the performance characterization of a single-hop link, we obtain a variety of local and global metrics to evaluate the fitness of a candidate set (CS) and prioritize the members of a CS. Since rate-error and range-beamwidth tradeoffs yield different candidate set diversities, we develop a candidate filtering and searching algorithm to find the optimal sector-shaped coverage region by scanning the feasible search space. Moreover, a hybrid acoustic/optic coordination mechanism is considered to avoid duplicate transmission of the relays. Numerical results show that SectOR protocol can perform even better than an optimal unicast routing protocol in well-connected UOWNs.

In this paper, we propose an enhanced Huffman coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (EHC-OFDM-IM) scheme. The proposed scheme is capable of utilizing all legitimate subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) and adapting the bijective mapping relation between SAPs and leaves on a given Huffman tree according to channel state information (CSI). As a result, a dynamic codebook update mechanism is obtained, which can provide more reliable transmissions. We take the average block error rate (BLER) as the performance evaluation metric and approximate it in closed form when the transmit power allocated to each subcarrier is independent of channel states. Also, we propose two CSI-based power allocation schemes with different requirements for computational complexity to further improve the error performance. Subsequently, we carry out numerical simulations to corroborate the error performance analysis and the proposed dynamic power allocation schemes. By studying the numerical results, we find that the depth of the Huffman tree has a significant impact on the error performance when the SAP-to-leaf mapping relation is optimized based on CSI. Meanwhile, through numerical results, we also discuss the trade-off between error performance and data transmission rate and investigate the impacts of imperfect CSI on the error performance of EHC-OFDM-IM.

The classical approach of avoiding or ignoring interference in wireless networks cannot accommodate the ambitious quality-of-service demands of ultra-dense cellular networks (CNs). However, recent ground-breaking information-theoretic advances changed our perception of interference from a foe to a friend. This paper aims to shed light on harnessing the benefits of integrating modern interference management (IM) schemes into future CNs. To this end, we envision a hybrid multiple access (HMA) scheme that decomposes the network into sub-topologies of potential IM schemes for more efficient utilization of network resources. Preliminary results show that HMA can multiply non-orthogonal multiple access performance, especially under dense user deployment.

Entering the 5G/6G era, the core concept of human-centric communications has intensified the search effort into analytical frameworks for integrating technological and non-technological domains. Among non-technological domains, human behavioral, psychological, and socio-economic contexts are widely considered as indispensable elements for characterizing user experience (UE). In this study, we introduce the prospect theory as a promising methodology for modeling UE and perceptual measurements for human-centric communications. As the founding pillar of behavioral economics, the prospect theory proposes the non-linear quantity and probability perception of human psychology, which extends to five fundamental behavioral attributes that have profound implications for diverse disciplines. By expatiating on the prospect theoretic framework, we aim to provide a guideline for developing human-centric communications and articulate a novel interdisciplinary research area for further investigation.

LightFDG is an integrated approach to flow detection (FD) and flow grooming (FG) in optical wireless data center networks (DCNs), which is interconnected via wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) based free-space optical (FSO) links. Since forwarding bandwidth-hungry elephant flows (EFs) and delay-sensitive mice flows (MFs) on the same path can cause severe performance degradation, the LightFDG optically grooms flows of each class into rack-to-rack (R2R) flows. Then, R2R-MF and R2R-EF flows are separately forwarded over lightpaths of separate MF and EF virtual topologies, respectively. Lightpaths are provisioned by jointly determining the capacity and route based on flows' arrival rate, size, and completion time request. To prevent EFs from congesting the MF lightpaths, high speed and accurate flow-detection mechanisms are also necessary for classifying EFs as soon as possible. Therefore, a fast-lightweight-and-accurate flow detection framework is developed by leveraging the transmission control protocol (TCP) behaviors. The proposed FD scheme has the flexibility of being implemented as in-network or centralized to classify flows of modifiable and unmodifiable hosts, respectively. Since the centralized scheme incurs considerable overhead, the processing and communication overhead is also mitigated by proposed techniques. Numerical results show that LightFDG outperforms traditional load balancers by about 3x for EFs and 10x for MFs. In this paper, we envision a hybrid opto-acoustic network design for the internet of underwater things (IoUT). Software-defined underwater networking (SDUN) is presented as an enabler of hybridizing benefits of optic and acoustic systems and adapting IoUT nodes to the challenging and dynamically changing underwater environment. We explain inextricably interwoven relations among functionalities of different layers and analyze their impacts on key network attributes. Network function virtualization (NFV) concept is then introduced to realize application specific cross-layer protocol suites through an NFV management and orchestration system. We finally discuss how SDUN and NFV can slice available network resources as per the diverging service demands of different underwater applications. The controversy and argument on the usefulness of the physical layer (PHY) academic research for wireless communications are long-standing since the cellular communication paradigm gets to its maturity. In particular, researchers suspect that the performance improvement in cellular communications is primarily attributable to the increases in telecommunication infrastructure and radio spectrum instead of the PHY academic research, whereas concrete evidence is lacking. To respond to this controversy from an objective perspective, we employ econometric approaches to quantify the contributions of the PHY academic research and other performance determinants. Through empirical analysis and the quantitative evidence obtained, albeit preliminary, we shed light on the following issues: 1) what determines the cross-national differences in cellular network performance; 2) to what extent the PHY academic research and other factors affect cellular network performance; 3) what suggestions we can obtain from the data analysis for the stakeholders of the PHY research. To the best of our knowledge, this article is the first `empirical telecommunication research,' and the first effort to involve econometric methodologies to evaluate the usefulness of the PHY academic research.

Ultra-high bandwidth, negligible latency and seamless communication for devices and applications are envisioned as major milestones that will revolutionize the way by which societies create, distribute and consume information. The remarkable expansion of wireless data traffic that we are witnessing recently has advocated the investigation of suitable regimes in the radio spectrum to satisfy users' escalating requirements and allow the development and exploitation of both massive capacity and massive connectivity of heterogeneous infrastructures. To this end, the Terahertz (THz) frequency band (0.1-10 THz) has received noticeable attention in the research community as an ideal choice for scenarios involving high-speed transmission. Particularly, with the evolution of technologies and devices, advancements in THz communication is bridging the gap between the millimeter wave (mmW) and optical frequency ranges. Moreover, the IEEE 802.15 suite of standards has been issued to shape regulatory frameworks that will enable innovation and provide a complete solution that crosses between wired and wireless boundaries at 100 Gbps. Nonetheless, despite the expediting progress witnessed in THz wireless research, the THz band is still considered one of the least probed frequency bands. As such, in this work, we present an up-to-date review paper to analyze the fundamental elements and mechanisms associated with the THz system architecture.

The standardization of fifth generation (5G) communications has been completed, and the 5G network should be commercially launched in 2020. As a result, the visioning and planning of sixth generation (6G) communications has begun, with an aim to provide communication services for the future demands of the 2030s. Here we provide a vision for 6G that could serve a research guide in the post-5G era. We suggest that human-centric mobile communications will still be the most important application of 6G and the 6G network should be human centric. Thus, high security, secrecy, and privacy should be key features of 6G and should be given particular attention by the wireless research community. To support this vision, we provide a systematic framework in which potential application scenarios of 6G are anticipated and subdivided. We subsequently define key potential features of 6G and discuss the required communication technologies. We also explore the issues beyond communication technologies that could hamper research and deployment of 6G.

A novel modulation scheme termed orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) has been proposed and regarded as one of the promising candidate modulation schemes for next generation networks. Although OFDM-SNM is capable of having a higher spectral efficiency (SE) than OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM) and plain OFDM under certain conditions, its reliability is relatively inferior to these existing schemes, because the number of active subcarriers varies. In this regard, we propose an enhanced OFDM-SNM scheme in this paper, which utilizes the flexibility of placing subcarriers to harvest a coding gain in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. In particular, we stipulate a methodology that optimizes the subcarrier activation pattern (SAP) by subcarrier assignment using instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and therefore the subcarriers with higher channel power gains will be granted the priority to be activated, given the number of subcarriers is fixed. We also analyze the proposed enhanced OFDM-SNM system in terms of outage and error performance. The average outage probability and block error rate (BLER) are derived and approximated in closed-form expressions, which are further verified by numerical results generated by Monte Carlo simulations. The high-reliability nature of the enhanced OFDM-SNM makes it a promising candidate for implementing in the Internet of Things (IoT) with stationary machine-type devices (MTDs), which are subject to slow fading and supported by proper power supply.

Smart building (SB), a promising solution to fast-paced and continuous urbanization around the world, includes the integration of a wide range of systems and services and involves the construction of multiple layers. SB is capable of sensing, acquiring, and processing a very large amount of data as well as performing appropriate actions and adaptation. Rapid increases in the number of connected nodes and thereby the data transmission demand of SB have led to conventional transmission and processing techniques becoming insufficient to provide satisfactory services. In order to enhance the intelligence of SBs and achieve efficient monitoring and control, sixth generation (6G) communication technologies, particularly indoor visible light communications (VLC) and machine learning (ML), are required to be incorporated in SBs. Herein, we envision a novel SB framework featuring a reliable data transmission network, powerful data processing, and reasoning abilities, all of which are enabled by 6G communications. Primary simulation results support the promising visions of the proposed SB framework.

Next generation wireless networks are expected to provide much higher data throughput and reliable connections for a far larger number of wireless service subscribers and machine-type nodes, which result in increasingly stringent requirements of spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) stands out as a promising solution to satisfy the SE requirement with a reasonable increase in system complexity. However, the EE of OFDM-IM is still required to be enhanced. Moreover, diversity gain is hardly harvested in OFDM-IM systems, which hinders further reliability enhancement. In this regard, relay assisted OFDM-IM, as a promising joint paradigm to achieve both high SE and EE, was proposed and has been studied since last year. The objectives of this article are to summarize the recent achievements of this joint paradigm, articulate its pros and cons, and reveal the corresponding challenges and future work.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) has become a high-profile candidate for the modulation scheme in next generation networks, and many works have been published to analyze it in recent years. Error performance is one of the most important and interesting aspects of OFDM-IM, which has been analyzed in most works. However, most of them employ two key approximations to derive the closed-form expressions of block error rate (BLER) and/or average bit error rate (BER). The first one is to utilize the union bound assisted by the pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis, and the second one is to employ an exponential approximation of Q-function. In this letter, we apply Craig's formula to analyze the error performance for OFDM-IM in place of the exponential approximation. Because Craig's formula is the exact expression of Q-function, the accuracy of analytical results regarding error performance for OFDM-IM can be improved. On the contrary of low speed and high delay acoustic systems, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) can deliver a high speed and low latency service at the expense of short communication ranges. Therefore, multihop communication is of utmost importance to improve degree of connectivity and overall performance of underwater optical wireless networks (UOWNs). In this regard, this paper investigates relaying and routing techniques and provides their end-to-end (E2E) performance analysis under the location uncertainty. To achieve robust and reliable links, we first consider adaptive beamwidths and derive the divergence angles under the absence and presence of a pointing-acquisitioning-and-tracking (PAT) mechanism. Thereafter, important E2E performance metrics (e.g., data rate, bit error rate, transmission power, amplifier gain, etc.) are obtained for two potential relaying techniques; decode & forward (DF) and optical amplify & forward (AF). We develop centralized routing schemes for both relaying techniques to optimize E2E rate, bit error rate, and power consumption. Alternatively, a distributed routing protocol, namely Light Path Routing (LiPaR), is proposed by leveraging the range-beamwidth tradeoff of UOWCs. LiPaR is especially shown to be favorable when there is no PAT mechanism and available network information. In order to show the benefits of multihop communications, extensive simulations are conducted to compare different routing and relaying schemes under different network parameters and underwater environments.

Traditional wired data center networks (DCNs) suffer from cabling complexity, lack flexibility, and are limited by the speed of digital switches. In this paper, we alternatively develop a top-down traffic grooming (TG) approach to the design and provisioning of mission-critical optical wireless DCNs. While switches are modeled as hybrid optoelectronic cross-connects, links are modeled as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) capable free-space optic (FSO) channels. Using the standard TG terminology, we formulate the optimal mixed-integer TG problem considering the virtual topology, flow conversation, connection topology, non-bifurcation, and capacity constraints. Thereafter, we develop a fast yet efficient sub-optimal solution which grooms mice flows (MFs) and mission-critical flows (CFs) and forward on predetermined rack-to-rack (R2R) lightpaths. On the other hand, elephant flows (EFs) are forwarded over dedicated server-to-server (S2S) express lightpaths whose routes and capacity are dynamically determined based on the availability of wavelength and capacity. To prioritize the CFs, we consider low and high priority queues and analyze the delay characteristics such as waiting times, maximum hop counts, and blocking probability. As a result of grooming the sub-wavelength traffic and adjusting the wavelength capacities, numerical results show that the proposed solutions can achieve significant performance enhancement by utilizing the bandwidth more efficiently, completing the flows faster than delay sensitivity requirements, and avoiding the traffic congestion by treating EFs and MFs separately.

Data center networks (DCNs) are essential infrastructures to embrace the era of highly diversified massive amount of data generated by emerging technological applications. In order to store and process such a data deluge, today's DCNs have to deploy enormous length of wires to interconnect a plethora of servers and switches. Unfortunately, wired DCNs with uniform and inflexible link capacities expose several drawbacks such as high cabling cost and complexity, low space utilization, and lack of bandwidth efficiency. Wireless DCNs (WDCNs) have emerged as a promising solution to reduce the time, effort, and cost spent on deploying and maintaining the wires. Thanks to its reconfigurability and flexibility, WDCNs can deliver higher throughputs by efficiently utilizing the bandwidth and mitigate the chronic DCN problems of oversubscription and hotspots. Moreover, wireless links enhance the fault-tolerance and energy efficiency by eliminating the need for error-prone power-hungry switches. Accordingly, this paper first compares virtues and drawbacks of millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical wireless communications as potential candidates. Thereafter, an in-depth discussion on advances and challenges in WDCNs is provided including physical and virtual topology design, quality of service (QoS) provisioning, flow classification, data grooming, and load balancing. Exhaled breath can be used in retrieving information and creating innovative communication systems. It contains several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and biological entities that can act as health biomarkers. For instance, the breath of infected human contains a nonnegligible amount of pathogenic aerosol that can spread or remain suspended in the atmosphere. Therefore, the exhaled breath can be exploited as a source's message in a communication setup to remotely scan the bio-information via an aerosol transmission channel. An overview of the basic configuration is presented along with a description of system components with a particular emphasis on channel modeling. Furthermore, the challenges that arise in theoretical analysis and system development are highlighted. Finally, several open issues are discussed to concretize the proposed communication concept.

In this paper, we study the joint 3D placement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and UAVs-users association under bandwidth limitation and quality of service constraint. In particular, in order to allow to UAVs to dynamically improve their 3D locations in a distributed fashion while maximizing the network's sum-rate, we break the underlying optimization into 3 subproblems where we separately solve the 2D UAVs positioning, the altitude optimization, and the UAVs-users association. First, given fixed 3D positions of UAVs, we propose a fully distributed matching based association that alleviates the bottlenecks of bandwidth allocation and guarantees the required quality of service. Next, to address the 2D positions of UAVs, we adopt a modified version of K-means algorithm, with a distributed implementation, where UAVs dynamically change their 2D positions in order to reach the barycenter of the cluster that is composed of the served ground users. In order to optimize the UAVs altitudes, we study a naturally defined game-theoretic version of the problem and show that under fixed UAVs 2D coordinates, a predefined association scheme, and limited-interference, the UAVs altitudes game is a non-cooperative potential game where the players (UAVs) can maximize the limited-interference sum-rate by only optimizing a local utility function. Therefore, we adopt the best response dynamics to reach a Nash equilibrium of the game which is also a local optimum of the social welfare function. Our simulation results show that, using the proposed approach, the network's sum rate of the studied scenario is improved as compared with the trivial case where the classical version of K-means is adopted and users are assigned, at each iteration, to the closest UAV.
