Abstract The Tibetan Plateau is home to numerous glaciers that are important for freshwater supply and climate regulation. These glaciers, which are highly sensitive to climatic variations, serve as vital indicators of climate change. Understanding glacier-fed hydrological systems is essential for predicting water availability and formulating climate adaptation strategies. This study investigated the dynamic fluctuations in the water level of the Blue Moon Lake Valley (BMLV), supplied by meltwater from Baishui River Glacier No. 1 on Yulong Snow Mountain. We focused on the lake pulse phenomenon—subtle yet significant water level fluctuations that have often been overlooked in prior research. By employing fast Fourier transform (FFT), multivariate regression (MVR), and random forest (RF) models, we examined the interactions among glacier melt dynamics, climatic variables, and hydrological responses. Our analysis indicates that the rate of change (ROC) in the water level fluctuates between − 0.006 and 0.01 m/min, with a median ROC of − 7.24E−06 m/min, highlighting the significant variability influenced by glacier melt and precipitation. The maximum cumulative sum (CS) value of 0.09 m suggests a net increase in the water level, predominantly due to increased precipitation, decreased evaporation, and increased glacier melting. We demonstrate that temperature critically influences glacier melt rates and water level variations, alongside solar radiation, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed. The ROC of Baishui River Glacier No. 1 melt ranges from − 0.0016 to 0.0015 m/min, reflecting substantial variation with significant downstream implications for water availability during dry seasons. The mean interval between consecutive glacier melt peaks is approximately 2.87 h, with a strong positive linear trend R2 = 0.99, indicating frequent melt events. Conversely, water level peaks occur approximately every 6.5 h, with a strong positive trend R2 = 0.99, indicating a slower recurrence rate. The transit time for meltwater from Baishui River Glacier No. 1 to BMLV is estimated at approximately 4.16 h. Additionally, we quantify the water flux from BMLV across various timescales, highlighting the substantial contribution of glacial meltwater. This novel study systematically examines the hydrological dynamics of BMLV. This study has the potential to reveal broader implications for water resource management, ecosystem dynamics, and climate change adaptation in regions dependent on glacier-fed lakes.

Urological malignancies are a major global health issue because of their complexity and the wide range of ways they affect patients. There's a growing need for in-depth research into these cancers, especially at the molecular level. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) – these don't code for proteins but are crucial in controlling genes – and the tumor microenvironment (TME), which is no longer seen as just a background factor but as an active player in cancer progression. Understanding how ncRNAs and the TME interact is key for finding new ways to diagnose and predict outcomes in urological cancers, and for developing new treatments. This article reviews the basic features of ncRNAs and goes into detail about their various roles in the TME, focusing specifically on how different ncRNAs function and act in urological malignancies.

The economic potential induced by environmental changes in the Arctic region garnered substantial interest, which positions Arctic trade as a crucial indicator in forecasting the impacts of climate change on the global economy. Nevertheless, attention devoted to the evolving dynamics of trade in the Arctic region remains scarce. In this study, we constructed export trade network in the Arctic region (including Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, the Canadian Arctic, the Russian Arctic, Alaska State of the USA, and Greenland) from 1990 to 2019 and analyzed its topology and evolutionary characteristics through complex network theory. We used a structural entropy index based on the distribution of the number of trading partners and the degree of trade concentration to assess export diversity, while we also utilized a revealed comparative advantage index to evaluate product export competitiveness using the share of trade volume of each type of product. The results indicate that the total export trade in the Arctic region increased by 53.4% during 1990–2019, with the most significant growth observed in the exports of chemical products and mineral fuels. The increasing complexity of trade network in the Arctic region resulted in the region’s export destinations no longer being concentrated on a few major countries and regions. The proportion of exports from the Arctic region to Europe decreased by 13.5%, while the proportion of exports from the Arctic region to Asia and North America increased by 6.8% and 3.1%, respectively. The Arctic region exhibited clear distinctions in the range of flows of different products, and its export trade was becoming increasingly diversified. Although differences in comparative advantages between products within individual countries or regions have narrowed, substantial gaps persist. The findings of this study can enhance the comprehensive understanding of the significance and function of Arctic trade activities within the global economy, providing a scientific basis for addressing the associated challenges and opportunities in the context of climate change.

Taking the Yangtze River Source Basin (YRSB) and Shule River Basin (SRB) as two typical cases, the sustainability of the water resources in these two basins was evaluated using the level of water stress (LWS) from sustainable development goal 6.4.2, and the regulating effect of the glacier runoff on the LWS was quantified. From 2000 to 2030, the level of socioeconomic development in the YRSB is low, and the total water consumption is only about 0.18 × 108 m3, whereas the SRB has a relatively high level of socioeconomic development and total water consumption is about 10 × 108 m3, i.e., 50 times higher than that in the YRSB. For the aforementioned reasons, the SRB's LWS is much higher than the YRSB's, resulting in a very low sustainability of water resources. As natural assets, glaciers flow downstream in the runoff mode, so compensation at the watershed scale should be considered. In the basin, the optimal allocation of water resources is needed. At the inter-basin scale, the compensation mechanism of glacier water resources needs to be improved. HIGHLIGHTS The proportion of glacial runoff in water resources and water demand in the Shule River Basin is far higher than in the Yangtze River Source Basin.; Glacial runoff significantly reduced water stress in the Shule River.; We provide a new framework for the spatial flow of glacier water services and suggest the glacier water compensation mechanism as an important pathway to sustainable water use.;

ABSTRACT HIV-1 replication is tightly regulated in host cells, and various restriction factors have important roles in inhibiting viral replication. SAMHD1, a well-known restriction factor, suppresses HIV-1 replication by hydrolyzing intracellular dNTPs, thereby limiting the synthesis of viral cDNA in quiescent cells. In this study, we revealed an additional and distinct mechanism of SAMHD1 inhibition during the postviral cDNA synthesis stage. Using immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry analysis, we demonstrated the interaction between SAMHD1 and MX2/MxB, an interferon-induced antiviral factor that inhibits HIV-1 cDNA nuclear import. The disruption of endogenous MX2 expression significantly weakened the ability of SAMHD1 to inhibit HIV-1. The crucial region within SAMHD1 that binds to MX2 has been identified. Notably, we found that SAMHD1 can act as a sensor that recognizes and binds to the incoming HIV-1 core, subsequently delivering it to the molecular trap formed by MX2, thereby blocking the nuclear entry of the HIV-1 core structure. SAMHD1 mutants unable to recognize the HIV-1 core showed a substantial decrease in antiviral activity. Certain mutations in HIV-1 capsids confer resistance to MX2 inhibition while maintaining susceptibility to suppression by the SAMHD1-MX2 axis. Overall, our study identifies an intriguing antiviral pattern wherein two distinct restriction factors, SAMHD1 and MX2, collaborate to establish an alternative mechanism deviating from their actions. These findings provide valuable insight into the complex immune defense networks against exogenous viral infections and have implications for the development of targeted anti-HIV therapeutics.IMPORTANCEIn contrast to most restriction factors that directly bind to viral components to exert their antiviral effects, SAMHD1, the only known deoxynucleotide triphosphate (dNTP) hydrolase in eukaryotes, indirectly inhibits viral replication in quiescent cells by reducing the pool of dNTP substrates available for viral cDNA synthesis. Our study provides a novel perspective on the antiviral functions of SAMHD1. In addition to its role in dNTP hydrolysis, SAMHD1 cooperates with MX2 to inhibit HIV-1 nuclear import. In this process, SAMHD1 acts as a sensor for incoming HIV-1 cores, detecting and binding to them, before subsequently delivering the complex to the molecular trap formed by MX2, thereby immobilizing the virus. This study not only reveals a new antiviral pathway for SAMHD1 but also identifies a unique collaboration and interaction between two distinct restriction factors, establishing a novel line of defense against HIV-1 infection, which challenges the traditional view of restriction factors acting independently. Overall, our findings further indicate the intricate complexity of the host immune defense network and provide potential targets for promoting host antiviral immune defense.

Abstract The cryosphere plays a critical role in maintaining the stability of the social-ecological system, but rapid cryosphere changes have been and are wide-ranging and have a profound affect, even threatening the achievement of the UN’s 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs). In the study, we review the opportunities and threats caused by cryosphere changes in achieving the SDGs. The results reveal that cryosphere changes are significantly related to the supply of sustainable fresh water (SDG 6), alpine hydropower (SDG 7), and climate action (SDG 13). In addition, they favorably support life on land and below water (SDG 14-15), and effectively affect the livelihoods (SDG 1-5), agricultural development (SDG 2), snow/ice tourism (SDG 8), infrastructure (SDG 9), regional inequality (SDG 10), and cities and communities (SDG 11), as well as affecting Arctic shipping routes (SDG 16). Long-term cryosphere threats far outweigh their contributions to the SDGs. The cryosphere contributes little to human emissions, but it is significantly affected by climate change. Areas affected by cryosphere changes need to strengthen resilience and enhance the ability to adapt to the influences of cryosphere changes (SDG 1-17) via financial transfer, multilateral international cooperation, and other practical policies.

With the rapid development of the civil aviation industry, flight delays caused by convective weather are becoming increasingly severe. In terminal airspace with complex traffic environments, these delays can propagate to subsequent arrivals and departures, thereby affecting the operational efficiency of the terminal airspace and potentially disrupting the entire air traffic system. Accurate short-term forecasting of convective weather can help reduce flight delays, improve airspace utilization, and decrease the workload of air traffic controllers. This study, grounded in supervised deep learning, addresses civil aviation operational requirements by developing a short-term forecasting model for convective weather based on a Convolutional Neural Network-Transformer (CNN-Transformer). The model leverages eight types of weather products from civil aviation weather radar and ERA5, including basic reflectance, echo top, vertically integrated liquid, relative humidity, temperature, U-component of wind, V-component of wind, and vertical velocity. The training was conducted using 241 datasets, totaling 23,881 samples. To evaluate the model’s validity, ablation studies were performed on each parameter, and its performance was compared with the Centroid Method, Optical Flow, CNN-CNN, and CNN-Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-LSTM). According to six evaluation indicators, traditional radar echo extrapolation showed better forecast accuracy within 1 hour, while the CNN-Transformer-based short-term forecasting model for convective weather demonstrated superior performance for 2-6 hour forecasts.

Abstract Background 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) can be used to study neurological disorders because it can be utilized to examine the concentrations of related metabolites. However, the diagnostic utility of different field strengths for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to make quantitative comparisons of metabolites of TLE at 1.5T and 3.0T and evaluate their efficacy. Methods Our retrospective collections included the single-voxel 1H-MRS of 23 TLE patients and 17 healthy control volunteers (HCs) with a 1.5T scanner, as well as 29 TLE patients and 17 HCs with a 3.0T scanner. Particularly, HCs were involved both the scans with 1.5T and 3.0T scanners, respectively. The metabolites, including the N-acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine (Cr), and choline (Cho), were measured in the left or right temporal pole of brain. To analyze the ratio of brain metabolites, including NAA/Cr, NAA/Cho, NAA/(Cho + Cr) and Cho/Cr, four controlled experiments were designed to evaluate the diagnostic utility of TLE on 1.5T and 3.0T MRS, included: (1) 1.5T TLE group vs. 1.5T HCs by the Mann-Whitney U Test, (2) 3.0T TLE group vs. 3.0T HCs by the Mann-Whitney U Test, (3) the power analysis for the 1.5T and 3.0T scanner, and (4) 3.0T HCs vs. 1.5T HCs by Paired T-Test. The mass balance of glaciers requires more detailed and continuous observations to understand their seasonal change in relation to climate. Here, we designed and installed an automated real-time monitoring platform at 4645 m a.s.l. on the Baishui River Glacier No.1 to collect continuous high-resolution observational data, and analyzed the seasonal dynamic from glacier movement and surface mass balance from glacier melting and snow accumulation. The results showed that the platform moved northeastward ~12.9 m at a rate of 0.06 ± 0.02 m d−1 between September 2021 and April 2022. The surface mass balance showed a varied temporal period. July and August were the main ablation periods, while ablation decreased and ceased in September. The glacier neither melted nor accumulated much between October and December, but began to have rapid snow accumulation in January. The glacier surface temperature varied with the air temperature and showed significant inter-seasonal differences among monsoon, post-monsoon and winter seasons. The surface mass balance also exhibited a strong response to the air temperature changes, with an average decrease of 1°C the point mass balance increased by 0.11 m w.e. from monsoon to post-monsoon and 0.22 m w.e. from post-monsoon to winter. Moreover, we found snowfall caused a decrease in the glacier surface temperature by increasing the surface albedo.

With the continuous advancements in tumor immunotherapy, researchers are actively exploring new treatment methods. Peptide therapeutic cancer vaccines have garnered significant attention for their potential in improving patient outcomes. Despite its potential, only a single peptide-based cancer vaccine has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms and current development status is crucial for advancing these vaccines. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the production principles and therapeutic mechanisms of peptide-based cancer vaccines, highlights the commonly used peptide-based cancer vaccines, and examines the synergistic effects of combining these vaccines with immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. While some studies have yielded suboptimal results, the potential of combination therapies remains substantial. Additionally, we addressed the management and adverse events associated with peptide-based cancer vaccines, noting their relatively higher safety profile compared to traditional radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Lastly, we also discussed the roles of adjuvants and targeted delivery systems in enhancing vaccine efficacy. In conclusion, this review comprehensively outlines the current landscape of peptide-based cancer vaccination and underscores its potential as a pivotal immunotherapy approach.

In the current study, cryoconite samples were collected from six glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau to analyze n-alkanes and n-alkenes. The findings revealed that the concentrations of n-alkanes and n-alkenes varied from 40.1 to 496.1 μg g−1 and from 4.6 to 13.8 μg g−1, respectively. The carbon preference index of the long-chain n-alkanes ranged from 3.3 to 8.4, and the average chain length ranged from 28.7 to 29.3. Moreover, the δ13C of the n-alkanes in cryoconites were within the range of C3 plants, demonstrating that the n-alkanes in cryoconites were only derived from vascular plants. However, the δDmean were more negative than that of C3 plants, which could be caused by dry and humid conditions of glaciers. Unlike n-alkanes, n-alkenes ranged from C17:1 to C30:1 and showed a weak even-over-odd carbon number preference in the Dongkemadi, Yuzhufeng, Laohugou and Tianshan glacier, but a weak odd carbon preference in the Qiyi glacier. The n-alkenes in the YL Snow Mountains showed an obvious odd-over-even carbon number predominance from C17:1 to C22:1 with Cmax at C19:1, and the even-over-odd carbon number preference from C23:1 to C30:1 with Cmax at C28:1. This demonstrated that the n-alkenes of cryoconites may be mainly derived from in situ production in glaciers.

In order to study the fatigue performance and fatigue failure mode of the composite box girder with steel bottom plate and corrugated webs (SBCSWs), the model beam was made and the constant and variable amplitude fatigue experiment were performed. Combined with ABAQUS finite element software, the strain, deflection, and fatigue failure mode of the composite box girder with SBCSWs were analyzed. The results showed that the slope of the load–deflection curve, the slope of the load–strain curve, and the neutral axis height of the model beam did not change during the constant amplitude fatigue test. In the variable amplitude fatigue test, as the fatigue loading time and fatigue load amplitude increased, the slope of the load–deflection curve and the slope of the load–strain curve of the model beam decreased significantly, while the neutral axis height increased significantly. The section strain of the composite box girder with SBCSWs was consistent with the quasi-plane section assumption. The fatigue failure of the composite box girder with SBCSWs began at the stress concentration at the junction of the steel bottom plate and the corrugated webs. The fatigue fracture section has typical fatigue fracture characteristics.

With the rapid growth of flight volume, the impact of convective weather on flight operations in the terminal area has become more and more serious. In this paper, the typical flight paths (TFPs) are used to replace flight procedures as the routine flight paths in the terminal area, and the TFP of each flight is predicted by Random Forest (RF), Boosting Tree (BT) and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) algorithms based on the weather and flight plan characteristics. A multi-flight rerouting optimisation model by bi-level programming is established, which contains a flight flow optimisation model in the upper layer and a single flight path optimisation model in the lower layer. The simulated annealing algorithm and the bidirectional A* algorithm are used to solve the upper and lower models. This paper uses the terminal area of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (ZGGG) and Wuhan Tianhe Airport (ZHHH) for case analysis. The RF algorithm has better performance in predicting TFPs compared with the BT and KNN algorithms. Compared to the historical radar trajectory, the flight path optimisation results show that for the Guangzhou terminal area, while meeting the Terminal Airspace Availability (TAA) as constraint, the flight flow increases and the flight distance reduces, effectively improving the operational efficiency within the terminal.

Background: Neddylation, a post-translational modification process, plays a crucial role in various human neoplasms. However, its connection with kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) remains under-researched. Methods: We validated the Gene Set Cancer Analysis Lite (GSCALite) platform against The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, analyzing 33 cancer types and their link with 17 neddylation-related genes. This included examining copy number variations (CNVs), single nucleotide variations (SNVs), mRNA expression, cellular pathway involvement, and methylation. Using Gene Set Variation Analysis (GSVA), we categorized these genes into three clusters and examined their impact on KIRC patient prognosis, drug responses, immune infiltration, and oncogenic pathways. Afterward, our objective is to identify genes that exhibit overexpression in KIRC and are associated with an adverse prognosis. After pinpointing the specific target gene, we used the specific inhibitor MLN4924 to inhibit the neddylation pathway to conduct RNA sequencing and related in vitro experiments to verify and study the specificity and potential mechanisms related to the target. This approach is geared towards enhancing our understanding of the prognostic importance of neddylation modification in KIRC. Results: We identified significant CNV, SNV, and methylation events in neddylation-related genes across various cancers, with notably higher expression levels observed in KIRC. Cluster analysis revealed a potential trade-off in the interactions among neddylation-related genes, where both high and low levels of gene expression are linked to adverse prognoses. This association is particularly pronounced concerning lymph node involvement, T stage classification, and Fustat score. Simultaneously, our research discovered that PSMB10 exhibits overexpression in KIRC when compared to normal tissues, negatively impacting patient prognosis. Through RNA sequencing and in vitro assays, we confirmed that the inhibition of neddylation modification could play a role in the regulation of various signaling pathways, thereby influencing the prognosis of KIRC. Moreover, our results underscore PSMB10 as a viable target for therapeutic intervention in KIRC, opening up novel pathways for the development of targeted treatment strategies. Conclusion: This study underscores the regulatory function and potential mechanism of neddylation modification on the phenotype of KIRC, identifying PSMB10 as a key regulatory target with a significant role in influencing the prognosis of KIRC.

Industrial structure upgrading plays an important role in improving economic development efficiency. Taking Jiangsu as the study subject, the paper selects panel data from 2005 to 2018 and performs dynamic panel models and threshold models to analyze the influence mechanism of foreign direct investment (FDI) and green technology innovation on industrial structure upgrading (including rationalization and advancement). The results show that FDI acts negatively on industrial structure upgrading, exhibiting U-shaped relationship with advancement, in contrast, green technology innovation shows a positive contribution to upgrading. In addition, rationalization is limited by fixed assets growing but increases with rising education levels. An increase in fixed assets and education both have a positive effect on advancement. Further, FDI plays a facilitating role in advancement considering the positive moderating effect of green technology innovation. Therefore, the study provides a theoretical reference for the development path of foreign investment and industrial structure upgrade breakthrough in Jiangsu.

Glaciers play an important role in understanding the climate, water resources, and surrounding natural change. Baishui River Glacier No. 1, a temperate glacier in the monsoon-influenced Southeastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, has experienced significant ablation due to regional warming during the past few decades. However, little is known about the yearly changes in Baishui River Glacier No. 1. To investigate how Baishui River Glacier No. 1 has changed in recent years, digital orthophoto maps and digital elevation models were obtained from an unmanned aerial vehicle on 20 October 2018 and 22 July 2021, covering 84% and 47% of the total area, respectively. The results of the Baishui River Glacier No. 1 changes were obtained by differencing the digital elevation models, manual tracking, and terminus-retreat calculation methods. Our results showed that the surveyed area had a mean elevation change of −4.26 m during 2018 and 2021, and the lower area lost more ice than other areas. The terminus of Baishui River Glacier No. 1 has retreated by 16.35 m/a on average, exhibiting spatial variation with latitude. Moreover, we initially found that there was a high correlation between surface velocity and elevation gradient in this high-speed glacier. The surface velocity of Baishui River Glacier No. 1 was derived with the manual feature tracking method and ranged from 10.48 to 32.00 m/a, which is slightly smaller than the seasonal average. However, the snow coverage and ice melting of the two epochs led to the underestimation of our elevation change and velocity results, which need further investigation.

Urologic cancers such as kidney, bladder, prostate, and uroepithelial cancers have recently become a considerable global health burden, and the response to immunotherapy is limited due to immune escape and immune resistance. Therefore, it is crucial to find appropriate and effective combination therapies to improve the sensitivity of patients to immunotherapy. DNA damage repair inhibitors can enhance the immunogenicity of tumor cells by increasing tumor mutational burden and neoantigen expression, activating immune-related signaling pathways, regulating PD-L1 expression, and reversing the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment to activate the immune system and enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy. Based on promising experimental results from preclinical studies, many clinical trials combining DNA damage repair inhibitors (e.g., PARP inhibitors and ATR inhibitors) with immune checkpoint inhibitors (e.g., PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors) are underway in patients with urologic cancers. Results from several clinical trials have shown that the combination of DNA damage repair inhibitors with immune checkpoint inhibitors can improve objective rates, progression-free survival, and overall survival (OS) in patients with urologic tumors, especially in patients with defective DNA damage repair genes or a high mutational load. In this review, we present the results of preclinical and clinical trials of different DNA damage repair inhibitors in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors in urologic cancers and summarize the potential mechanism of action of the combination therapy. Finally, we also discuss the challenges of dose toxicity, biomarker selection, drug tolerance, drug interactions in the treatment of urologic tumors with this combination therapy and look into the future direction of this combination therapy.

Ferroptosis is a new type of cell death characterized by damage to the intracellular microenvironment, which causes the accumulation of lipid hydroperoxide and reactive oxygen species to cause cytotoxicity and regulated cell death. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play an important role in gene expression at the epigenetic, transcriptional, and post-transcriptional levels through interactions with different DNAs, RNAs, or proteins. Increasing evidence has shown that ferroptosis-related ncRNAs are closely related to the occurrence and progression of several diseases, including urological malignancies. Recently, the role of ferroptosis-associated ncRNAs (long non-coding RNAs, micro RNAs, and circular RNAs) in the occurrence, drug resistance, and prognosis of urological malignancies has attracted widespread attention. However, this has not yet been addressed systematically. In this review, we discuss this issue as much as possible to expand the knowledge and understanding of urological malignancies to provide new ideas for exploring the diagnosis and treatment of urological malignancies in the future. Furthermore, we propose some challenges in the clinical application of ferroptosis-associated ncRNAs.

The spatial structure of urban agglomerations affects the economic development and environmental conditions of urban agglomerations. Severe air pollution makes green development an empty talk, and how the spatial structure of urban agglomerations affects air pollution is an urgent problem to be solved in pursuit of high-quality economic development. The panel data of 20 urban agglomerations in China from 2002 to 2017 are used to test how the spatial structure of urban agglomerations affects regional PM2.5 concentration in resource misallocation mediation effect. The empirical results show that (1) most urban agglomerations are polycentric, and only Guanzhong, Poyang Lake Ring, Wuhan and Nanqin Beifang urban agglomerations are monocentric. (2) The spatial structure and PM2.5 concentration have U-shaped characteristics, with the inflection point of centrality equal to 1. To reduce PM2.5 concentration in polycentric urban agglomerations can be achieved by increasing the centrality, while the opposite is true for monocentric urban agglomerations. (3) Improving the resource allocation of urban agglomerations can reduce PM2.5 concentration. The spatial structure of urban agglomerations with a limited degree of centrality can improve the resource allocation of urban agglomerations and further reduce PM2.5 pollution. This also indicates to a certain extent that a reasonable spatial structure of urban agglomerations is conducive to optimizing resource allocation and improving air pollution.

The existing judicial reading comprehension datasets are relatively simple, and the answers to the questions can be obtained through single-step reasoning. However, the content of legal documents in actual scenarios is complex, making it problematic to infer correct results merely by single-step reasoning. To solve this type of issue, we promote the difficulties of questions included in Chinese Judicial Reading Comprehension (CJRC) dataset and propose two augmented versions, CJRC2.0 and CJRC3.0. These datasets are derived from Chinese judicial judgment documents in different fields and annotated by judicial professionals. Compared to CJRC, there are more types of judgment documents in the two datasets, and the questions become are more challenging to answer. For CJRC2.0, we only preserve complex questions that require to be solved by multi-step reasoning. Besides, we provide additional supporting facts to the answers. For CJRC3.0, we introduce a new question type, the multi-span question, which should be answered by extracting and combining multiple spans in the documents. We implement two powerful baselines to evaluate the difficulty of our proposed datasets. Our proposed datasets fill gaps in the field of explainable legal machine reading comprehension.

During the last decade, non-invasive methods such as liquid biopsy have slowly replaced traditional imaging and invasive pathological methods used to diagnose and monitor cancer. Improvements in the available detection methods have enabled the early screening and diagnosis of solid tumors. In addition, advances in early detection methods have made the continuous monitoring of tumor progression using repeat sampling possible. Previously, the focus of liquid biopsy techniques included the following: 1) the isolation of circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, and extracellular tumor vesicles from solid tumor cells in the patient’s blood; in addition to 2) analyzing genomic and proteomic data contained within the isolates. Recently, there has been a rapid devolvement in the techniques used to isolate and analyze molecular markers. This rapid evolvement in detection techniques improves their accuracy, especially when few samples are available. In addition, there is a tremendous expansion in the acquisition of samples and targets for testing; solid tumors can be detected from blood and other body fluids. Test objects have also expanded from samples taken directly from cancer to include indirect objects affected in cancer development. Liquid biopsy technology has limitations. Even so, this detection technique is the key to a new phase of oncogenetics. This review aims to provide an overview of the current advances in liquid biopsy marker selection, isolation, and detection methods for solid tumors. The advantages and disadvantages of liquid biopsy technology will also be explored.

The adoption of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contribute to addressing the multiple and complex challenges faced by humankind. In particular, the increasing impact of climate change and globalization represent a great challenge for the sustainable development of Arctic countries and efforts are needed to measure, assess, and compare the progress toward SDGs and the trends in this region. This study used 69 indicators closely related to Arctic countries and a composite indicator approach to assess their sustainability performance. SDG interlinkages were also assessed through Spearman's rank order correlation. The results showed that the sustainable development of Arctic countries gradually improved from 2000 to 2020, with increasing scores recorded for 82% of the goals and 73% of the indicators. Overall, significant progress was observed in the SDG 10 (reduction of inequality), SDG 3 (health improvement), and SDG 4 (quality of education). The highest-ranking scores were obtained for poverty reduction (SDG 1), SDG 3, and climate actions (SDG 13) in 2020. Over the 21-year period, Sweden reached the highest overall score for sustainable development, and Russia showed the greatest improvement. Synergies dominated over trade-offs among and within SDGs. SDGs 1, 3, 9, 10, and 11 presented a relatively higher proportion of synergies, while higher proportions of trade-offs were observed for the 8–9, 8–11, 3–12, and 10–12 SDG pairs. The associations of industry development with clean energy use and environmental conservation were strengthened during the study period. However, the performance varied greatly for different indicators, goals, and their correlations among Arctic countries. The results indicate that the main challenges for these countries in relation to SDGs consist in promoting an inclusive economic model as well as sustainable consumption and production patterns.

China's economic development has entered a new historical stage, and it is crucial to coordinate the linkage between economic development, resource allocation and environmental protection in this new stage. In view of this, this paper selects the panel data of 30 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) in China from 2011 to 2020, and firstly measures the Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) by using Slack Based Measure -Malmquist Luenberger method (SBM-ML); Then, the relationship between the development of digital economy and regional GTFP is analyzed by using the two-way fixed effect model and threshold effect; Finally, relevant policy suggestions are put forward. This paper found that: firstly, the development of digital economy significantly improves China's GTFP, and the conclusion still valid after considering a series of robustness tests; Secondly, there are obvious disparities in the development level of digital economy among provinces, and the development level of coastal areas is generally higher than that of inland areas, and according to the sub-regional regression results, the positive effect of digital economy on GTFP has regional heterogeneity, and the development of digital economy in coastal areas has a more significant effect on the enhancement of GTFP, while this effect in inland areas does not pass the significance test; Thirdly, according to the threshold effect test results, there is also a single threshold effect with institutional environment and technological innovation as the threshold variables for the impact of digital economy on GTFP in China.

Energy shortage in various parts of the world has an adverse impact on people's quality of life and the overall development of these areas. Pakistan is among the world's energy-deficient countries, with a 7000 MW (Mega-Watt) energy deficit due to higher energy demand and lower energy production. Because of its hot climate, Pakistan has great potential to meet its energy needs using renewable energy (RE) sources, particularly solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies, to boost clean energy production. Considering this, the current study investigates the factors influencing households' purchase intentions of solar PV technology in Pakistan. This research has developed a comprehensive research model by integrating the Technology Readiness Index (TRI) and Theory of Planned Behaviour (PTB). Data from households were collected using a questionnaire survey method. This was a cross-sectional study that used a non-probability sampling technique. In four provincial capitals (Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, and Peshawar) and the federal capital (Islamabad), 420 questionnaires were distributed to household heads. Smart PLS 3.0 was used to test the hypotheses proposed by decomposing personal traits (product knowledge, environmental concern, ecological lifestyle, and perceived benefits) and technological factors (technology innovativeness and technology optimism) and examining their impact on consumers' attitudes toward solar photovoltaic products. This study also examined the role of perceived consumer effectiveness as a moderator between consumers' attitudes toward solar photovoltaic products and purchase intentions. The empirical findings showed that product knowledge, ecological lifestyle, perceived benefits, innovativeness, and optimism positively and significantly impact consumers' attitudes toward solar photovoltaic products. Likewise, consumer attitude has a positive and significant impact on purchase intention of solar PV products. Subsequently, the moderating role of perceived consumer effectiveness in the relationship between consumer attitudes and purchase intentions of solar PV products was also significantly correlated. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of the study, as well as its limitations and future directions, are discussed.

This study focuses on the utilization of surface modification technology to create glass disks with varying surface wettability. A measurement test bench for point contact lubrication film is employed to investigate the impact of changes in the angle between the velocities of the glass disk and steel ball on the state of the lubricating oil film at the interface. The results show that altering the surface wettability reduces the adhesive strength between the interface and the adjacent lubricant, leading to a decrease in the ultimate shear stress, and inducing interface slippage. When the rotational velocity of the disk matches the translational velocity of the ball and their trajectories are inclined at specific angles, the sliding velocity increases proportionally to the inclination angle, which contributes significantly to the thermal effect. Furthermore, when the velocity varies across the interface with differences in wettability, the contact zone forms a wedge-shaped gap and causes modifications in the oil film’s shape, including the formation of an inlet dimple and an inclined straight stripe. The dominant factor influencing the interface is the slip when the angle is acute, whereas the thermal effect plays a significant role when the angle is obtuse. This work is expected to provide a new strategy for elastohydrodynamic lubrication under surface wettability interfaces.

Accelerated sea level rise is placing coastal communities in a vulnerable position; however, the processes underlying sea level acceleration in China remain uncertain. In this study, we examine the sea level acceleration and its contributors over the China Seas. We calculate acceleration along the Chinese coast using satellite altimetry and tide gauge records. During the satellite altimetry era, sea level acceleration from tide gauge records varies across all stations, reaching up to 0.30 ± 0.20 mm/yr2, while satellite altimetry could underestimate/overestimate the sea level acceleration in most locations. Acceleration near the coast, except in the Bohai Sea, is mainly driven by changes in the mass component. In contrast, for the open ocean, changes in steric sea level are the main contributor to sea level acceleration. The evolution of spatial acceleration patterns over the China Seas reveals that the ENSO and PDO variabilities dominate the changing patterns of sea level acceleration in the open ocean, including the Philippine Sea through steric sea level, and changes in most coastal locations are due to the non-steric component.

Environmental protection and governance have become a topic of global concern. Sustainable development and green development are the unshakable ideas of China’s social and economic development. Under this premise, the energy industry, as a pillar industry in China, has the disadvantages of high energy consumption and heavy pollution. Therefore, the quality of environmental information disclosure in energy industry needs to be improved urgently. This paper selects 66 samples from 22 energy companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets from 2018 to 2020 as the research object, establishes two potential variables and 13 observed variables of environmental awareness and environmental information disclosure respectively, and constructs structural equation model to study the impact of corporate environmental awareness on environmental information disclosure. The research shows that the environmental awareness of enterprises is positively related to the level of environmental information disclosure. The conclusion is helpful to improve the enthusiasm and consciousness of energy companies to disclose environmental information. A better role in supervising the quality of environmental information disclosure by the government, enterprises and the public can be played.

Abstract Background Although distal radius fractures (DRFs) are clinically common, intra-articular DRFs accompanied by dorsally displaced free fragments are much less so. At present, it is very difficult to fix and stabilize the intra-articular distal radius fractures accompanying dorsally displaced free fragments with a plate. Our aim was to investigate the clinical effect of DRFs with distally displaced dorsal free mass treated with distal volaris radius (DVR) combined with turning of the radius via the distal palmar approach. Methods From 2015 to 2019, 25 patients with intra-articular distal radius fractures associated with dorsally displaced free fragments were selected and treated with distal volaris radius (DVR) combined with turning of the radius via the distal palmar approach. This study involved 14 males and 11 females, with an average age of 34.5 years (ranging from 21 to 50 years). The mean follow-up period was 16.5 months (ranging from 12 to 22 months). The dorsal displacement of the free fragments was analyzed by X-ray and three-dimensional computed tomography, allowing characterization of postoperative recovery effects by radial height, volar tilt and radial inclination. For the follow-up, we evaluated effects of the surgery by analyzing range of motion (ROM); Modified Mayo Wrist Score (MMWS); and Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. Postoperative wound recovery and complications were also monitored to evaluate the clinical therapeutic effects of the surgical procedures. Results X-ray showed that all patients showed reduced fractures, well-healed wounds and recovered function with no obvious complications. Based on the follow-up, patients had a mean radial height of 10.5 mm (ranging from 8.1 to 12.6 mm), mean MMWS of 78.8° (ranging from 61° to 90°), mean DASH score of 16.25 (ranging from 11 to 21), mean ROM for volar flexion of 76.5° (ranging from 62° to 81°), mean ROM for dorsiflexion of 77.1° (ranging from 59 to 83) and mean VAS score of 1.4 (ranging from 1 to 3). Conclusion Treatment of the intra-articular distal radius fractures accompanying dorsally displaced free fragments with turning of the radius and the DVR plate system via the distal palmar approach is effective and has no obvious complications.

Abstract Background Closed reduction and locked intramedullary nailing has become a common surgical method in the treatment of femoral shaft fractures. Overlap and rotation displacements can usually be corrected through the use of an orthopedic traction table. However, lateral displacement and angulation persist. Methods In this paper, we describe a joystick that can be used in the closed reduction of a fracture. It can correct lateral displacement and angulation, and has the advantage of multi-direction reduction. The device described in this paper includes two parallel horizontal joysticks, one vertical main joystick and four assistant rods. Moreover, there are many specific spacing holes in the two parallel horizontal joysticks and a groove structure in the vertical main joystick. When the main “H” joystick is pressed, it can adjust lateral displacements and angulation because of the lever principle. The distance between parallel horizontal joysticks and assistant rods can be adjusted to the fracture position and body mass index of different patients. Results The study participants consisted of 11 males and 5 females with a mean age of 31.0 years. All participants had good closed reduction and achieved bony union without any complications such as infection, nerve injury, non-union, malunion, and limb length discrepancy. By using an “H” joystick, closed femoral shaft fracture reduction and locked intramedullary nailing becomes simpler and faster. Conclusion Based on the use of this instrument, we can easily and conveniently obtain the correct reduction situation, which leads to better surgical results. This device can be applied in the reduction of clinical femoral fractures and gradually extended to the reduction of other fractures.

Summary: Achieving human-level performance on some of the machine reading comprehension (MRC) datasets is no longer challenging with the help of powerful pre-trained language models (PLMs). However, the internal mechanism of these artifacts remains unclear, placing an obstacle to further understand these models. This paper focuses on conducting a series of analytical experiments to examine the relations between the multi-head self-attention and the final MRC system performance, revealing the potential explainability in PLM-based MRC models. To ensure the robustness of the analyses, we perform our experiments in a multilingual way on top of various PLMs. We discover that passage-to-question and passage understanding attentions are the most important ones in the question answering process, showing strong correlations to the final performance than other parts. Through comprehensive visualizations and case studies, we also observe several general findings on the attention maps, which can be helpful to understand how these models solve the questions.

Glacier mass balance is a key idea in understanding the relationship between glaciers and climate. In this study, Landsat images, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, and Advance Land Operation Satellite digital elevation models, and ground observation records for 2000–2010 and 2019–2020 were used to analyze a mass balance of the Baishui River Glacier No. 1 (BRG1) in Yulong Snow Mountain, southeastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Both glaciological and geodetic methods were used to understand the spatial pattern of the mass balance. A mass balance contour line map of the glacier was created for the first time. From 2000 to 2010, the mean annual mass balance of the BRG1 was calculated to be -0.99 m w.e., -1.01 m w.e., and −1.18 m w.e. using the contour line, profile curve, and geodetic methods, respectively. In addition, the analysis revealed that strong melting of the glacier occurred from July 27 to 15 September 2019, with an averaged glacier mass balance of -1.75 m w.e. and a mean daily melting rate of 35 mm w.e. The annual mass balance was assessed to be −1.31 m w.e. during 2019/20 using the contour line method. In addition, the spatial patterns on the mass balance contour maps for 2000–2010 and the summer of 2019, and the climate change in this region were analyzed. The results indicate that the increased air temperature was the main cause of the accelerated glacial melting.

Achieving human-level performance on some Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) datasets is no longer challenging with the help of powerful Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs). However, it is necessary to provide both answer prediction and its explanation to further improve the MRC system's reliability, especially for real-life applications. In this paper, we propose a new benchmark called ExpMRC for evaluating the textual explainability of the MRC systems. ExpMRC contains four subsets, including SQuAD, CMRC 2018, RACE+, and C3, with additional annotations of the answer's evidence. The MRC systems are required to give not only the correct answer but also its explanation. We use state-of-the-art PLMs to build baseline systems and adopt various unsupervised approaches to extract both answer and evidence spans without human-annotated evidence spans. The experimental results show that these models are still far from human performance, suggesting that the ExpMRC is challenging. Terminal airspace is the convergence area of air traffic flow, which is the bottleneck of air traffic management. With the rapid growth of air traffic volume, the impact of convective weather on flight operations is becoming more and more serious. To change the conditions and improve the utilization of terminal area airspace, a convective weather terminal area capacity (CWTAC) model is developed to quantify the effect of convective weather on the capacity of the terminal area in this paper. The airspace of the terminal area is divided into major airspace, minor airspace and no-impact airspace according to the distribution of the air traffic flow. Under convective weather, their permeabilities are calculated and used as input features, and the actual availability rate is set to label. Three machine learning algorithms, support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), and artificial neural network (ANN), are used to predict the availability rate. Then, the terminal airspace capacity under convective weather can be calculated. The historical operation data of the Guangzhou terminal area and the Wuhan terminal area are taken to test machine learning algorithms and verify the CWTAC model. It shows that all three machine learning algorithms are practical, and ANN is the best one based on mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The predicted capacity of the CWTAC model accords well with the actual flight number in the terminal airspace under convective weather. The reasons why they are not entirely consistent are also analyzed.

Multilingual neural machine translation (MNMT) models are theoretically attractive for low- and zero-resource language pairs with the impact of cross-lingual knowledge transfer. Existing approaches mainly focus on English-centric directions and always underperform compared to their pivot-based counterparts for non-English directions. In this work, we aim to build a many-to-many MNMT system with an emphasis on the quality of non-English directions by exploring selective and aligned online data augmentation algorithms. Based on our findings showing that the augmented synthetic samples are not “the more, the better” we propose selective online back-translation (SOBT) and thoroughly study different selection criteria to pick suitable samples for training. Furthermore, we boost SOBT with cross-lingual online substitution (CLOS) to align token representations and encourage transfer learning. Our intuition is based on the hypothesis that a universal cross-lingual representation leads to a better multilingual translation performance, especially for non-English directions. Comparing to previous state-of-the-art many-to-many MNMT models and conventional pivot-based methods, experiments on IWSLT2014 and OPUS-100 translation benchmarks show that our approach achieves a competitive or even better performance on English-centric directions and achieves up to ∼12 BLEU for non-English directions. All of our models and codes are publicly available.

This review covers some important new aspects of the alcohol-induced communications between liver parenchymal and non-parenchymal cells leading to liver injury development. The information exchange between various cell types may promote end-stage liver disease progression and involves multiple mechanisms, such as direct cell-to-cell interactions, extracellular vesicles (EVs) or chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors contained in extracellular fluids/cell culture supernatants. Here, we highlighted the role of EVs derived from alcohol-exposed hepatocytes (HCs) in activation of non-parenchymal cells, liver macrophages (LM), and hepatic stellate cells (HSC). The review also concentrates on EV-mediated crosstalk between liver parenchymal and non-parenchymal cells in the settings of HIV- and alcohol co-exposure. In addition, we overviewed the literature on the crosstalk between cell death pathways and inflammasome activation in alcohol-activated HCs and macrophages. Furthermore, we covered highly clinically relevant studies on the role of non-inflammatory factors, sinusoidal pressure (SP), and hepatic arterialization in alcohol-induced hepatic fibrogenesis. We strongly believe that the review will disclose major mechanisms of cell-to-cell communications pertained to alcohol-induced liver injury progression and will identify therapeutically important targets, which can be used for alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) prevention.

In order to accurately calculate the cross-sectional stresses and deflections of the improved composite box girder with corrugated steel webs, the control differential equations and boundary conditions are established based on the energy variational principle, taking into account the effects of corrugated steel web properties, shear lag, and shear deformation. A cantilever composite box girder is used as a numerical example. The influence of width span ratio and corrugated steel web bending angle on the shear lag and fold effect is analyzed. The results show that the analytical solution is in good agreement with the finite element solution. A shear lag effect and a negative shear lag effect exist in the cantilever composite box girder under uniform load. The fold effect under concentrated load has a greater influence on the mechanical properties of the wing plate than under uniform load. With the increase of the width span ratio, the effects of both shear lag and fold effect increases. With the increase of the corrugated steel web bending angle, the fold effect is obviously enhanced, but the change of the bending angle has little effect on the shear lag effect.

Background and aims: Hepatitis B virus-associated acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) is a complicated syndrome with extremely high short-term mortality. Whether plasma exchange (PE) improves HBV-ACLF outcomes remains controversial. Here, PE-based non-bioartificial liver support system (NB-ALSS) effects on short-term HBV-ACLF patient outcomes were investigated.Materials and methods: HBV-ACLF patients from Chinese Acute-on-chronic Liver Failure (CATCH-LIFE) cohort receiving standard medical therapy (SMT) alone or PE-based NB-ALSS in addition to SMT were allocated to SMT and SMT+PE groups, respectively; propensity score matching (PSM) was used to eliminate confounding bias. Short-term (28/90-day and 1-year) survival rates were calculated (Kaplan-Meier).Results: In total, 524 patients with HBV-ACLF were enrolled in this study; 358 received SMT alone (SMT group), and the remaining 166 received PE-based NB-ALSS in addition to SMT (SMT+PE group). PSM generated 166 pairs of cases. In the SMT+PE group, 28-day, 90-day, and 1-year survival rates were 11.90, 8.00, and 10.90%, respectively, higher than those in the SMT group. Subgroup analysis revealed that PE-based NB-ALSS had the best efficacy in patients with ACLF grade 2 or MELD scores of 30–40 (MELD grade 3). In MELD grade 3 patients who received SMT+PE, 28-day, 90-day, and 1-year survival rates were improved by 18.60, 14.20, and 20.10%, respectively. According to multivariate Cox regression analysis, PE-based NB-ALSS was the only independent protective factor for HBV-ACLF patient prognosis at 28 days, 90 days, and 1 year (28 days, HR = 0.516, p = 0.001; 90 days, HR = 0.663, p = 0.010; 1 year, HR = 0.610, p = 0.051). For those who received SMT+PE therapy, PE-based NB-ALSS therapy frequency was the only independent protective factor for short-term prognosis (28-day, HR = 0.597, p = 0.001; 90-day, HR = 0.772, p = 0.018).Conclusions: This multicenter prospective study showed that the addition of PE-based NB-ALSS to SMT improves short-term (28/90 days and 1-year) outcomes in patients with HBV-ACLF, especially in MELD grade 3 patients. Optimization of PE-based NB-ALSS may improve prognosis or even save lives among HBV-ACLF patients.

Background: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the most common liver disease worldwide and its underlying molecular mechanisms are still poorly understood. Moreover, conflicting data have been reported on potentially protective autophagy, the exact role of ethanol-metabolizing enzymes and ROS. Methods: Expression of LC3B, CYP2E1, and NOX4 was studied in a mouse model of acute ethanol exposure by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. Autophagy was further studied in primary mouse hepatocytes and huh7 cells in response to ethanol and its major intermediator acetaldehyde. Experiments were carried out in cells overexpressing CYP2E1 and knock down of NOX4 using siRNA. The response to external H2O2 was studied by using the GOX/CAT system. Autophagic flux was monitored using the mRFP-GFP-LC3 plasmid, while rapamycin and chloroquine served as positive and negative controls. Results: Acute ethanol exposure of mice over 24 h significantly induced autophagy as measured by LC3B expression but also induced the ROS-generating CYP2E1 and NOX4 enzymes. Notably, ethanol but not its downstream metabolite acetaldehyde induced autophagy in primary mouse hepatocytes. In contrast, autophagy could only be induced in huh7 cells in the presence of overexpressed CYP2E1. In addition, overexpression of NOX4 also significantly increased autophagy, which could be blocked by siRNA mediated knock down. The antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) also efficiently blocked CYP2E1-and NOX4-mediated induction of autophagy. Finally, specific and non-toxic production of H2O2 by the GOX/CAT system as evidenced by elevated peroxiredoxin (Prx-2) also induced LC3B which was efficiently blocked by NAC. H2O2 strongly increased the autophagic flux as measured by mRFP-GFP-LC3 plasmid. Conclusion: We here provide evidence that short-term ethanol exposure induces autophagy in hepatocytes both in vivo and in vitro through the generation of ROS. These data suggest that suppression of autophagy by ethanol is most likely due to longer alcohol exposure during chronic alcohol consumption with the accumulation of e.g. misfolded proteins.

Study region: The Shule River Basin (SRB) in northwestern China is a representative area of global glacier-covered arid areas. Study focus: Water resources have greatly influenced sustainable development in global arid regions where glacier runoff is an important component of water resource supply. This study focused on the assessment of the water resources–carrying capacity in the SRB based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicator 6.4.2, level of water stress (LWS). New hydrological insights for the region: During the period between 2000 and 2030, the runoff of the SRB was predicted to follow an overall increasing trend. From 2000 to 2020, the annual average runoff in the upper reaches of the SRB was 10.9 × 108 m3, and then from 2021 to 2030, it increased by 22.8 %. According this trend, the average contribution of glacier meltwater to the total basin runoff is expected to decrease from the current 23 % to 15 % by 2030 (Representative Concentration Pathway 2.6, RCP 2.6). The supply of fresh-water resources has been close to the level of demand since 2015 and the LWS may increase between 2021 and 2030. The existence of glacial meltwater is expected to result in the continued reduction of basin water stress in the SRB by an average of 0.71 during the period between 2000 and 2030. Therefore, it is necessary to control water consumption of the socioeconomic system and adjust the industrial structure to face or adapt to the crisis of water shortage in global glacier-covered arid areas.

Summary: An oxidative DNA-cleaving DNAzyme (PL) employs a double-cofactor model “X/Cu2+” for catalysis. Herein, we verified that reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), flavin mononucleotide, cysteine, dithiothreitol, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, phloroglucinol, o-phenylenediamine, 3,3′,5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine, and hydroxylamine acted as cofactor X. According to their structural similarities or fluorescence property, we further confirmed that reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), 2-mercaptoethanol, dopamine, chlorogenic acid, resveratrol, and 5-carboxyfluorescein also functioned as cofactor X. Superoxide anions might be the commonality behind these cofactors. We subsequently determined the conservative change of individual nucleotides in the catalytic core under four different cofactor X. The nucleotides A4 and C5 are highly conserved, whereas the conservative levels of other nucleotides are dependent on the types of cofactor X. Moreover, we observed that the minor change in the PL's secondary structure affects electrophoretic mobility. Finally, we characterized a highly efficient variant T3G and converted its double-cofactor NADH/Cu2+ to sole-cofactor NADH.

This research presents a precise evaluation of the recession of monsoonal maritime glaciers at Mt. Dagu, based on multi-source remote-sensing data of an aerial topographic map from 1966 and Landsat MSS, TM, ETM+, and OLI data from 1975 to 2017 for six sub-regions of the glacier covering 1.747±0.068 km2 at present. The results show that: first, the area of glacier exhibits an exponentially decreasing trend and retreated as much as 5.094 ± 0.301 km2 during 1975-2017, with a shrinkage rate of 0.120 ± 0.004 km2a-1. Second, the highest area shrinkage rates of glaciers are in the north, northwest, southwest, and south aspects. The largest retreat altitude of the glacier terminus is in the southwest aspect of region 2. An airport’s terminal area is the bottleneck of the air transport system. Convective weather can seriously affect the normal flight status of arrival and departure flights. At present, pilots take different flight operation strategies to avoid convective weather based on onboard radar, visual information, adverse weather experience, etc. This paper studies trajectory clustering based on the OPTICS algorithm to obtain the arrival of typical flight routes in the terminal area. Based on weather information of the planned typical flight route and flight plan information, Random Forest (RF), K-nearest Neighbor KNN (KNN), and Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithms were used for training and establishing the Arrival Flight Operation Strategy Prediction Model (AFOSPM). In this paper, case studies of historical arrival flights in the Guangzhou (ZGGG) and Wuhan (ZHHH) terminal area were carried out. The results show that trajectory clustering results based on the OPTICS algorithm can more accurately reflect the regular flight routes of arrival flights in a terminal area. Compared to KNN and SVM, the prediction accuracy of AFOSPM based on RF is better, reaching more than 88%. On this basis, six features—including 90% VIL, weather coverage, weather duration, planned route, max VIL, and planned Arrival Gate (AF)—were used as the input features for AFOSPM, which can effectively predict various arrival flight operation strategies. For the most frequently used arrival flight operation strategies under convective weather conditions—radar guidance, AF changing, and diversion strategy—the prediction accuracy of the ZGGG and ZHHH terminal areas can exceed 95%, 85%, and 80%, respectively.

Abstract High-risk areas for glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) disasters in China are mainly concentrated in the middle-eastern Himalayas and Nyainqêntanglha (Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains), Tibetan Plateau. In the past 20 years, glaciers in these regions have retreated and thinned rapidly as a response to regional climate warming, leading to the formation of new glacial lakes and the expansion of existing glacial lakes. These areas are located in the border belt between the Indian and the Eurasian plates, where tectonic seismic activity is also frequent and intense. Earthquakes have often compromised the stability of mountain slopes, glaciers, and moraine dams, resulting in an imbalance in the state of glacial lakes and an increase of loose materials in valleys. It is foreseeable that the possibility of GLOFs and disaster occurrence will be great in the context of frequent earthquakes and continued climate warming. This article presents the temporal and spatial characteristics of GLOF disasters, as well as the conditions and mechanisms of GLOF disaster formation, and proposes an integrated risk management strategy to cope with GLOF disasters. It aims to facilitate the mitigation of the impacts of GLOF disasters on mountain economic and social systems, and improve disaster risk analysis, as well as the capability of risk management and disaster prevention and reduction.

Abstract Herein, we investigated the effects of new cofactors and inhibitors on an oxidative cleavage of DNA catalysis, known as a pistol-like DNAzyme (PLDz), to discuss its catalytic mechanism. PLDz performed its catalytic activity in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), in which Cu2+ promoted, whereas Fe2+ significantly inhibited the catalytic function. Since Fe2+/AA-generated hydroxyl radicals are efficient on DNA damage, implying that oxidative cleavage of PLDz had no relation with hydroxyl radical. Subsequently, we used Fe2+/H2O2 and Cu2+/H2O2 to identify the role of hydroxyl radicals in PLDz catalysis. Data showed that PLDz lost its activity with Fe2+/H2O2, but exhibited significant cleavage with Cu2+/H2O2. Because Fe2+/H2O2 and Cu2+/H2O2 are popular reagents to generate hydroxyl radicals and the latter also produces superoxide anions, we excluded the possibility that hydroxyl radical participated in oxidative cleavage and confirmed that superoxide anion was involved in PLDz catalysis. Moreover, pyrogallol, riboflavin and hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase with superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide generation also induced self-cleavage of PLDz, where catalase inhibited but superoxide dismutase promoted the catalysis, suggesting that hydrogen peroxide played an essential role in PLDz catalysis. Therefore, we proposed a catalytic mechanism of PLDz in which superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide mediated an oxidative cleavage process.

In view of rapid development of high-speed rail, the relationship between high-speed rail and air pollution needs to be tested and determined. Most research studies focused on the impact of high-speed rail on environmental pollution and just viewed high-speed rail as a control variable, which lacked a direct study on this relationship. Also, these rarely involved regional research, which is short of pertinence and insufficient understanding of regional issues. Therefore, based on the difference-in-differences (DID) model which is a natural experiment evaluation method, this study examined the impact of high-speed rail opening on air pollution by using the panel data of Jiangsu province, China, from the year of 2000 to 2017. The empirical results showed that the opening of Jiangsu high-speed rail, which increases cities’ good day significantly by 21.5%, has inhibitory effect on air pollution. Among control variables, there is no inverted “U” relationship between the economic development level and air pollution. Personal income and urbanization significantly improve air pollution, whereas foreign direct investment exacerbates it. And the results are still valid after robustness tests, including trend test and counterfactual test. Moreover, this study explores the relationship between the degree of reducing pollution caused by high-speed rail and the location of cities, which found that the opening of high-speed rail can greatly improve air pollution of areas in central city circle. Finally, it is found that when high-speed rail and other possible pollution items coexist, the improved effect of high-speed rail on air pollution is still obvious. Therefore, in order to exert the mitigating effect of high-speed rail on air pollution, it is necessary to rationally plan high-speed railway lines and develop the high-speed railways in cities closer to Shanghai.

Glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is one of the major natural disasters in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). On 25 June 2020, the outburst of the Jiwenco Glacial Lake (JGL) in the upper reaches of Nidu river in Jiari County of the QTP reached the downstream Niwu Township on 26 June, causing damage to many bridges, roads, houses, and other infrastructure, and disrupting telecommunications for several days. Based on radar and optical image data, the evolution of the JGL before and after the outburst was analyzed. The results showed that the area and storage capacity of the JGL were 0.58 square kilometers and 0.071 cubic kilometers, respectively, before the outburst (29 May), and only 0.26 square kilometers and 0.017 cubic kilometers remained after the outburst (27 July). The outburst reservoir capacity was as high as 5.4 million cubic meters. The main cause of the JGL outburst was the heavy precipitation process before outburst and the ice/snow/landslides entering the lake was the direct inducement. The outburst flood/debris flow disaster also led to many sections of the river and buildings in Niwu Township at high risk. Therefore, it is urgent to pay more attention to glacial lake outburst floods and other low-probability disasters, and early real-time engineering measures should be taken to minimize their potential impacts.

Using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), we measured and estimated the ice thickness of the Baishui River Glacier No. 1 of Yulong Snow Mountain. According to the position of the reflected media from the GPR image, combined with the radar waveform amplitude and polarity change information, the ice thickness and the changing medium position at the bottom of this temperate glacier were identified. Water paths were found in the measured ice, including ice caves and crevasses. A debris-rich ice layer was found at the bottom of the glacier, which produces strong abrasion and ploughing action at the bedrock surface. This results in the formation of different detrital layers stagnated at the ice-bedrock interface and numerous crevasses on the bedrock surface. Based on the obtained ice thickness and differential GPS data, combined with Landsat images, the kriging interpolation method was used to obtain grid data. The average ice thickness was 52.48 m and between 4740 and 4890 m above sea level, with a maximum depth of 92.83 m. The bedrock topography map of this area was drawn using digital elevation model from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. The central part of the glacier was characterized by small ice basins with distributed ice steps and ice ridges at the upper and lower parts.

Glacier retreat is a common phenomenon in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) with global warming during the past several decades, except for several mountains, such as the glaciers in the Karakoram and the western Kunlun Mountains. The dynamic nature of glaciers significantly influences the hydrologic, geologic, and ecological systems in the mountain regions. The sensitivity and dynamic response to climate change make glaciers excellent indicators of regional and global climate change, such as glacier melting and retreat with the rise of local air temperature. Long-term monitoring of glacier change is important to understand and assess past, current, and possible future climate environments. Some glacier surfaces are safe and accessible by foot, and are monitored using mass balance stakes and snow pits. Meanwhile, some glaciers with inaccessible termini may be surveyed using satellite remote images and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Those inaccessible glaciers are generally covered by debris in the southeast QTP, which is hardly accessible due to the wide distribution of crevasses and cliffs. In this paper, we used the UAV to monitor the dynamic features of mass balance and velocity of the debris-covered region of Baishui River Glacier No. 1 (BRG1) on the Yulong Snow Mountain (YSM), Southeast QTP. We obtained the Orthomosaic and DEM with a high resolution of 0.10 m on 20 May and 22 September 2018, respectively. The comparison showed that the elevation of the debris-covered region of the BRG1 decreased by 6.58 m ± 3.70 m on average, and the mean mass balance was −5.92 m w.e. ± 3.33 m w.e. during the summer, correspondingly. The mean displacement of debris-covered glacier surface was 18.30 m ± 6.27 m, that is, the mean daily velocity was 0.14 m/d ± 0.05 m/d during the summer. In addition, the UAV images not only revealed the different patterns of glacier melting and displacement but also captured the phenomena of mass loss due to ice avalanches at the glacier front and the development of large crevasses. This study provides a feasible method for understanding the dynamic features of global debris-covered glaciers which are inaccessible and unobservable by other means.
