2. Finite surgeries on three-tangle pretzel knots

Abstract

We classify Dehn surgeries on (p,q,r) pretzel knots that result in a manifold of finite fundamental group. The only hyperbolic pretzel knots that admit non-trivial finite surgeries are (-2,3,7) and (-2,3,9). Agol and Lackenby's 6-theorem reduces the argument to knots with small indices p,q,r. We treat these using the Culler-Shalen norm of the SL(2,C)-character variety. Longevity gene, SIRT1, is reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of COPD by regulating the signaling pathways of oxidative stress, inflammation, and aging. We hypothesize that SIRT1 and related genes are also associated with the benefits of PA in COPD patients.Methods: Eighteen COPD outpatients were enrolled in this study, and their PA level was assessed with an accelerometer. We assessed the SIRT1 and related genes mRNA expression levels in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of the subjects. We carried out respiratory function testing, blood gas analysis, the 6-minute walk test, and measurement of the cross-sectional area of the erector spinae muscles (ESMCSA) by chest computed tomography. We analyzed the association of PA with the results of each of the examinations.Results: The mean age was 72±9 years, and the mean forced expiratory volume in 1 second was 1.4±0.56 L (52%±19% predicted). Our findings revealed a correlation between the daily PA and ESMCSA. The SIRT1 and Forkhead box O (FOXO)1 mRNA expression levels in PBMCs were positively correlated with moderate-PA time (r=0.60, p=0.008 for SIRT1 and r=0.59, p=0.01 for FOXO1). Abstract

To seek a low-cost, extensible solution for the large-scale data visualization problem, a visual computing system is designed as a result of a collaboration between industry and government research laboratories in Japan, also with participation by researchers in U.S. This scalable system is a commodity PC cluster equipped with the VolumePro 500 volume graphics cards and a specially designed image compositing hardware. Our performance study shows such a system is capable of interactive rendering 5123 and 10243 volume data and highly scalable. In particular, with such a system, simulation and visualization can be performed concurrently which allows scientists to monitor and tune their simulations on the fly. In this paper, both the system and hardware designs are presented.

Abstract

In Escherichia coli, complete unlinking of newly replicated sister chromosomes is required to ensure their proper segregation at cell division. Whereas replication links are removed primarily by topoisomerase IV, XerC/XerD-dif site-specific recombination can mediate sister chromosome unlinking in Topoisomerase IV-deficient cells. This reaction is activated at the division septum by the DNA translocase FtsK, which coordinates the last stages of chromosome segregation with cell division. It has been proposed that, after being activated by FtsK, XerC/XerD-dif recombination removes DNA links in a stepwise manner. Here, we provide a mathematically rigorous characterization of this topological mechanism of DNA unlinking. We show that stepwise unlinking is the only possible pathway that strictly reduces the complexity of the substrates at each step. Finally, we propose a topological mechanism for this unlinking reaction.

Abstract

We carried out a trans-ancestry genome-wide association and replication study of blood pressure phenotypes among up to 320,251 individuals of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. We find genetic variants at 12 new loci to be associated with blood pressure (P = 3.9 × 10 -11 to 5.0 × 10 -21). The sentinel blood pressure SNPs are enriched for association with DNA methylation at multiple nearby CpG sites, suggesting that, at some of the loci identified, DNA methylation may lie on the regulatory pathway linking sequence variation to blood pressure. The sentinel SNPs at the 12 new loci point to genes involved in vascular smooth muscle (IGFBP3, KCNK3, PDE3A and PRDM6) and renal (ARHGAP24, OSR1, SLC22A7 and TBX2) function. The new and known genetic variants predict increased left ventricular mass, circulating levels of NT-proBNP, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (P = 0.04 to 8.6 × 10 -6). Our results provide new evidence for the role of DNA methylation in blood pressure regulation.

Abstract

ISA-type permanent cathode technology was introduced at the Tamano No. 2 refinery in Japan in October 2006, together with the installation of an additional 72 cells. The waxless type cathodes employ a combination of ISA 2000 cathode and hinged type edge strip to prevent electrolyte from infiltrating into the cathode. Three problems were encountered after the introduction of the ISA process, gradual outward movement of the edge strip, a slowdown in cathode stripping and lamination involving coverage of the bottom of the stainless plate with deposited Cu when the power supply was cut off. A device to hold the edge strips from both sides was installed which significantly decreased the defects caused by the edge strips. The main issues associated with cathode stripping were oil leakage to the strip cathodes and an increase in cathode flapping. The shape of the jig gripping the cathode was changed and a cross bar fitted to the cap so that the operator could electrically detect electrolytic Cu products which can be automatically rejected. A laboratory investigation into the lamination mechanism showed the formation of CuCl near the interface between the electrolytic Cu and the lamination. The CuCl was dissolved when electrolyte circulation was started. Other improvements have included the installation of a filter press to improve the recovery of fines from slime following its treatment by aeration to remove Cu, modifications to the desulphurisation electrolysis plant to produce a saleable product from the Cu partially recovered from the electrolyte during electrowinning and overall reduction in additive consumption by reducing the amount of glue used for smoothing the electrodeposited surface from 115 to 65 g/t and increasing the chloride concentration from 40 to 55 mg/l. Abstract

Background: Endotracheal/endobronchial metastases (EEMs) from nonpulmonary neoplasms are rare. However, their definition and developmental modes have not yet been fully elucidated.Methods: EEMs were defined as documented nonpulmonary neoplasms metastatic to the subsegmental or more proximal central bronchus, in a bronchoscopically visible range. The clinical and pathologic features of 16 cases were reviewed, with special emphasis on the developmental modes based on five criteria: location in the tracheobronchial tree, number of lesions, laterality of lesions, depth of lesions, and relationship with the associated bronchus.Results: The developmental modes were proposed on the basis of the above five criteria as follows: type I, direct metastasis to the bronchus; type II, bronchial invasion by a parenchymal lesion; type III, bronchial invasion by mediastinal or hilar lymph node metastasis; and type IV, peripheral lesions extended along the proximal bronchus. Primary tumors included colorectal in six patients, breast in three patients, uterus in two patients, osteosarcoma of the bone in two patients, and maxillary, larynx, and parotid carcinoma in one patient each, respectively. The mean recurrence interval was 65.3 months. The developmental modes were as follows: type I, five patients; type II, one patient; type III, four patients; and type IV, nine patients. Three patients underwent surgical resection. One patient has remained well for 5 years after operation. Median and mean survival times were 9 months and 15.5 months, respectively.Conclusion: The mean recurrence interval was long at 65.3 months, but the mean survival time was short at 15.5 months. Type I accounted for only 5 of 16 patients. Type II was found in only one patient. It is thought that this type is a rare form. Type IV affected nine patients. Abstract

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The chromosome region 18q21 has been shown to be frequently deleted in colorectal cancers, and such frequent allelic loss is a hallmark of the presence of a tumor-suppressor gene. The DPC4 gene, which is located at 18q21, has been identified as a tumor- suppressor gene from examination of pancreatic cancers. The aim of the present study was to determine if it might also be altered in colorectal cancers. METHODS: Mutation analyses of the DPC4 gene were performed on complementary DNA samples from 31 primary colorectal cancer specimens using a combination of polymerase chain reaction, single-strand conformation polymorphism, and DNA sequencing. RESULTS: Four missense mutations producing amino acid substitutions and a somatic 12-base pair deletion in the coding region of the DPC4 gene were detected in the 31 cancers (16%; 5 of 31). CONCLUSIONS: The DPC4 gene may play a role as a tumor-suppressor gene in a fraction of colorectal cancers; however, while allelic loss at 18q21 is very often seen in colorectal cancers, only a minority show DPC4 mutations, suggesting that there might be another tumor-suppressor gene in this chromosome region.
