Abstract Background Texture and color enhancement imaging (TXI) enhances the changes in endoscopic features caused by gastric neoplasms, such as redness/whiteness and elevation/depression. This study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of TXI in improving the visibility of gastric neoplasms compared with white light imaging (WLI) using conventional (CE) and newly developed endoscopes (NE). Methods We recruited patients who were histologically diagnosed with gastric neoplasms; endoscopy was performed, and gastric neoplasms photographed using three imaging modalities, including WLI, TXI mode 1 (TXI-1) and TXI mode 2 (TXI-2). Two different endoscopes (CE and NE) were used for the same patients. Six endoscopists provided the visibility scale scores ranging from 1 (poor) to 4 (excellent) for gastric neoplasms. The primary outcome was the visibility scale scores based on each modality and endoscope. The secondary outcome was the identification of factors including H. pylori infection, atrophy, location, size, morphology, histological diagnosis and intestinal metaplasia that affect the differences in visibility scale scores between TXI-1/TXI-2 and WLI. Results Fifty-two gastric neoplasms were analyzed. The mean visibility scale scores with the NE were 2.79 ± 1.07, 3.23 ± 0.96 and 3.14 ± 0.92 for WLI, TXI-1 and TXI-2, respectively. The mean visibility scales with the CE were 2.53 ± 1.10, 3.04 ± 1.05 and 2.96 ± 1.92 for WLI, TXI-1 and TXI-2, respectively. Abstract High photon energy vacuum ultraviolet radiation (VUV, 100−200 nm wavelength) is challenging to detect. It easily degrades conventional silicon and semiconductor photodetectors. Fluoride photodetectors can be the answer, but the correlation between fabrication parameters and photodetector performance is not known. Here, the effect of annealing is investigated on the characteristics of neodymium trifluoride thin film/quartz substrate interface and NdF3 photoconductivity within the VUV. Thin films are deposited on unheated and heated (600 °C) substrates with post‐deposition annealing. Dark current of films on unheated substrates decreases by as much as 1/10 as resistance increases from 1 −12 TΩ after annealing. Dark current of films on heated substrates increases even after annealing, resulting in similar photo and dark currents of ≈303.7 nA and poor detectors. Fluorine diffuses from the film to the substrate during deposition, exacerbated by substrate heating but not by annealing. Fluorine diffusion degrades crystallinity near the interface, increasing the dark current. Fluorine diffusion is absent when MgF2 is used as the heated substrate. Unannealed NdF3/MgF2 detector on 600 °C‐heated substrate and 600 °C‐annealed NdF3/SiO2 detector on unheated substrate exhibit similar resistances of ≈14 TΩ. Considering the film/substrate interface and annealing is crucial when developing VUV photodetectors.

A calcium fluoride (CaF2) single crystal with asymmetric gold (Au) and aluminum (Al) electrodes is investigated as a photovoltaic sensor of high-energy vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation. A photocurrent of at least 0.13nA is obtained at zero bias voltage, indicating that the sensor may be self-powered and can be operated without an external voltage source. The sensor is responsive only to wavelengths shorter than 130 nm, corresponding to photon energies greater than 9.5 eV. The 130-nm cutoff wavelength aligns with the transmission edge of the crystal, allowing it to screen out unwanted background UV and visible light without having to use filters. The 5.36 μs (fall time) time response of the sensor is similar to that of a commercial diamond UV sensor (5.05 μs). When operated in reverse- and forward-bias with an applied bias voltage ranging from –9 V to 9 V, the sensor exhibits rectification. In reverse-bias operation, increasing then decreasing the bias voltage leads to hysteresis which is attributed to surface defects at the CaF2/Au interface. As a self-powered filterless VUV sensor with a sufficiently fast response speed, the CaF2 sensor would be attractive for applications requiring high-power VUV light sources to be monitored.

Titanium alloy is widely used in different industrial applications. For the surface modification to improve the tribological properties, laser irradiation is a promising technology, which offers high efficiency, and high automation potential and geometrical flexibility. In this study, a novel method of surface modification for titanium alloys by carbonization using low fluence of laser irradiation in the atmosphere of PAO oil is proposed. Results show that the carbon content on the surfaces significantly increases with the laser shot number, with the laser irradiated spot showing little change of Ra. XPS analysis confirms that the carbon from the oil has bonded to the Titanium inside the alloy. By comparison with that irradiated without oil, the hardness of that irradiated in oil is much higher, demonstrating the feasibility of the surface modification of titanium carbide layer generation. To investigate the tribological properties, laser scanning irradiation in oil with different laser pulses were carried out to create laser modified areas and reciprocating ball-on-disk friction tests under oil lubrication were conducted. The laser modified areas show friction of 0.13, much lower than that of the unirradiated which is approximate 0.55, and the sliding lifetime of low friction is also increased with the laser pulse number. Moreover, by introducing patterning laser irradiation onto the uniformly irradiated area, the wear resistance can be further greatly improved, and the sliding lifetime can extend to 13 times of the optimal result of uniform irradiation.

Abstract Obesity causes multiple conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and so on, and an intervention is needed for controlling weight and improving metabolic syndrome. However, the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions and pharmacotherapy are restrictive for losing weight. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) was developed as a new therapy, picking the best of both medication and surgery, less invasive and more effective. Recently, ESG is gradually spreading in Western countries, but there is Case report doesn't need conclusion/result for Japanese patients. We herein reported the first clinical case of ESG in Japan. Given the situation of the pandemic of COVID‐19, we could not invite a proctor from Western countries and receive the instruction of the device setting and maneuver face to face. Thus, we conducted the training for device setting, maneuver, and operation under a web‐based international remote collaboration. Eventually, we completed ESG without an adverse event. We could prove this web‐based proctor system was useful through the introduction of ESG in Japan. The international remote collaboration could become a new normal even in the endoscopy field post‐COVID‐19 era.

In this study, we developed a one-step method for fabricating hydrophobic surfaces on copper (Cu) substrates. Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) with low free energy was successfully formed after low-fluence laser direct irradiation. The formation of Cu2O enhanced the hydrophobicity of the Cu substrate surface, and the contact angle linearly increased with the proportion of Cu2O. The Cu2O fabricated by low-fluence laser treatment showed the same crystal plane orientation as the pristine Cu substrate, implying an epitaxial growth of Cu2O on a Cu substrate.

Vacuum ultraviolet radiation (VUV, from 100 nm to 200 nm wavelength) is indispensable in many applications, but its detection is still challenging. We report the development of a VUV photoconductive detector, based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticle thin films. The effect of crystallinity, optical quality, and crystallite size due to film thickness (80 nm, 500 nm, 1000 nm) and type of substrate (silicon Si, quartz SiO2, soda lime glass SLG) was investigated to explore ways of enhancing the photoconductivity of the detector. The TiO2 film deposited on SiO2 substrate with a film thickness of 80 nm exhibited the best photoconductivity, with a photocurrent of 5.35 milli-Amperes and a photosensitivity of 99.99% for a bias voltage of 70 V. The wavelength response of the detector can be adjusted by changing the thickness of the film as the cut-off shifts to a longer wavelength, as the film becomes thicker. The response time of the TiO2 detector is about 5.8 μs and is comparable to the 5.4 μs response time of a diamond UV sensor. The development of the TiO2 nanoparticle thin film detector is expected to contribute to the enhancement of the use of VUV radiation in an increasing number of important technological and scientific applications.

Texture and color enhancement imaging (TXI) has been developed as an image-enhanced endoscopy technology. TXI mode2 enhances texture and brightness, and TXI mode1 also enhances color. This study aims to assess the color differences in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) suspicious lesions in the pharynx and esophagus using white light imaging (WLI), TXI mode1, TXI mode2, and narrow-band imaging (NBI). A total of 59 SCC suspicious lesions from 30 patients were analyzed. The color differences (ΔE) between the lesion and the surrounding mucosa were calculated for each modality. The color value was assessed using the Commission Internationale d’Eclairage L*a*b* color space. The visibility of the lesion in each modality was evaluated and compared to that in the WLI by six endoscopists. The mean ΔE values in the WLI, TXI mode1, TXI mode2, and NBI were 11.6; 18.6; 14.3; and 17.2, respectively, and the ΔE values of TXI mode1, TXI mode2, and NBI were significantly higher than those of the WLI (p < 0.001). No lesions had worse visibility, and 62.5% (37/59) had improved visibility, as assessed by more than half of the endoscopists in TXI mode1. TXI mode1 can enhance color changes and improve the visibility of SCC suspicious lesions in the pharynx and esophagus, compared to WLI.

The induction of surface cleavage along the crystalline structure of a zinc oxide substrate (plane orientation: 0001) by femtosecond laser pulses (wavelength: 1030 nm) has been reported; a scanning electron microscope image of the one-pulse (pulse energy: 6–60 μJ) irradiated surface shows very clear marks from broken hexagons. This cleavage process differs from the general laser-induced melt process observed on the surfaces of narrower-bandgap semiconductors and other metal materials. This phenomenon is discussed using a multi-photon absorption model, and the pulse-energy dependence of the cleavage depth (less than 3 μm) is quantitatively analyzed. Laser-induced cleavage is found not to occur under multi-pulse irradiation; when more than four pulses are irradiated upon the same spot, the general laser-induced melt process becomes dominant. This cleavage–melt shift is considered to be caused by the enhancement of absorption due to the initial pulses, which is supported by our measurement of cathodoluminescence.

We fabricated nanosized KMgF3 single crystals via a dry pulsed laser ablation process using femtosecond laser pulses. The sizes, shapes, and crystallographic properties of the crystals were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Almost all of the particles were spherical with diameters of less than 100 nm, and they were not highly agglomerated. Selected-area electron diffraction and high-resolution TEM analyses showed that the particles were single crystals. Particle diameter was controlled within a wide range by adjusting the Ar ambient gas pressure. Under low gas pressures (1 and 10 Pa), relatively small particles (primarily 10 nm or less) were observed with a high number density. With increasing pressure, the mean diameter increased and the number density drastically decreased. Vacuum-ultraviolet cathodoluminescence was observed at 140–230 nm with blue shift and broadening of spectrum.

We demonstrated a field emission lamp by employing a KMgF3 thin film as a solid-state vacuum ultraviolet phosphor. The output power of the lamp was 2 μW at an extraction voltage of 800 V and acceleration voltage of 1800 V, and it operated at wavelengths 140–220 nm, which is the shortest wavelength reported for solid-state phosphor lamps. The thin film was grown on MgF2 substrate by pulsed laser deposition. Its conversion efficiency was almost equivalent to a single KMgF3 crystal, and it had emission peaks of 155 and 180 nm in wavelength. These peaks are attributed to transitions from the valence anion band to the outermost core cation band and correspond well with emission peaks previously reported from the crystal. Additionally, we obtained a thermal-free and low-power consumption lamp by employing carbon nanofibres (CNFs) as a field emitter. A CNF emitter was easily grown at room temperature and can be grown on flexible materials.

A vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) field emission lamp was developed by using a neodymium ion doped lutetium fluoride (Nd3+ : LuF3) thin film as solid-state phosphor and carbon nanofiber field electron emitters. The thin film was synthesized by pulsed laser deposition and incorporated into the lamp. The cathodoluminescence spectra of the lamp showed multiple emission peaks at 180, 225, and 255 nm. These emission spectra were in good agreement with the spectra reported for the Nd3+ : LuF3 crystal. Moreover, application of an acceleration voltage effectively increased the emission intensity. These results contribute to the performance enhancement of the lamp operating in the VUV region.

We have fabricated Eu2+:LiCaAlF6 (Eu:LiCAF) nanoparticles via a dry pulsed laser ablation process using femtosecond laser pulses. The particle size was controlled by adjusting the laser fluence. The crystallographic orientation and chemical composition were preserved in all particles. The typical luminescence peak of Eu:LiCAF crystals at approximately 370 nm was observed in both the PL and X-ray induced luminescence (XL) spectra. The temporal PL profiles of all deposited particles exhibited fast-decay components in addition to the slow-decay components observed in the profile of the bulk crystal. Smaller particles had shorter decay times than larger particles. The fast-decay component of particles with a mean diameter of less than 0.36 μm (~40 ns) was at least one order of magnitude shorter than the decay time of the bulk crystal (~1700 ns). Even in the temporal XL profile, all deposited particles showed shorter decay times than the bulk decay time. We attribute these fast-decay components to defects on the particle surface. To confirm the defect level, we investigated the thermally stimulated luminescence of the deposited particles. In addition to an emission peak at approximately 540 K, which was also observed in the spectrum of the bulk crystal, an emission peak corresponding to surface defects at approximately 700K was observed in the spectrum of the particles.
