Abstract Background Spontaneous hemopneumothorax is a rare condition that can be life-threatening if not promptly diagnosed and treated. We report a case of early treatment with transcatheter arterial embolization and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Case presentation A 19-year-old Japanese male was diagnosed with left pneumothorax and underwent chest tube drainage. A total of 10 hours after admission, the patient developed dyspnea, chest pain, and sudden massive bloody effusion. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed contrast extravasation near the left lung apex, and spontaneous hemopneumothorax was diagnosed. Angiography revealed bleeding from a branch of the subscapular artery and transcatheter arterial embolization was performed. The patient underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and recovered uneventfully. Conclusions Anesthesiologists involved in urgent surgeries must be aware that a patient with spontaneous pneumothorax can develop a hemopneumothorax, even when full lung expansion has been obtained following chest tube drainage, owing to latent aberrant artery disruption. Interprofessional team engagement is essential for spontaneous hemopneumothorax management.

Summary: Recent studies have found dramatic cell-type-specific responses to stimulus novelty, highlighting the importance of analyzing the cortical circuitry at this granularity to understand brain function. Although initial work characterized activity by cell type, the alterations in cortical circuitry due to interacting novelty effects remain unclear. We investigated circuit mechanisms underlying the observed neural dynamics in response to novel stimuli using a large-scale public dataset of electrophysiological recordings in behaving mice and a population network model. The model was constrained by multi-patch synaptic physiology and electron microscopy data. We found generally weaker connections under novel stimuli, with shifts in the balance between somatostatin (SST) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) populations and increased excitatory influences on parvalbumin (PV) and SST populations. These findings systematically characterize how cortical circuits adapt to stimulus novelty.

Introduction/Objective: In Asia, 42% of young children suffer from iron deficiency anemia. Children have an increased requirement for iron intake because of growth and physical activity. Education plays an important role in anemia prevention and in ensuring children are aware of appropriate iron intake and the iron content of different foods. As a tool for this purpose, we adapted the adult version of the Revised Iron Intake Scale (RIIS) to create the Child and Adolescent Version of the Iron Intake Scale (CIIS), using illustrations to help children recognize the foods listed in the CIIS. We aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of this new scale. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire to examine the criterion-related validity of the CIIS. We used Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to compare iron intake estimated by the CIIS with that calculated by the Brief-type Diet History Questionnaire (BDHQ-15y), which assesses respondents’ dietary habits over the past month and is standardized among Japanese children. The survey was repeated twice to examine reliability. Abstract Adiposity varies among individuals with the influence of diverse physiological, pathological, environmental, hormonal, and genetic factors, but a unified molecular basis remains elusive. Here, we identify HSP47, a collagen-specific chaperone, as a key determinant of body adiposity. HSP47 expression is abundant in adipose tissue; increased with feeding, overeating, and obesity; decreased with fasting, exercise, calorie restriction, bariatric surgery, and cachexia; and correlated with fat mass, BMI, waist, and hip circumferences. Insulin and glucocorticoids, respectively, up- and down-regulate HSP47 expression. In humans, the increase of HSP47 gene expression by its intron or synonymous variants is associated with higher body adiposity traits. In mice, the adipose-specific knockout or pharmacological inhibition of HSP47 leads to lower body adiposity compared to the control. Mechanistically, HSP47 promotes collagen dynamics in the folding, secretion, and interaction with integrin, which activates FAK signaling and preserves PPARγ protein from proteasomal degradation, partly related to MDM2. The study highlights the significance of HSP47 in determining the amount of body fat individually and under various circumstances.

Successful surgical management of spontaneous pneumothorax usually depends on identifying the pleural fistula that is causing the air leak. However, identifying the exact location of the air leak preoperatively is typically impossible. A peculiar thin-walled bulla located in the azygoesophageal recess can cause pneumothorax in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A 61-year-old man with a history of COPD presented with exertional dyspnea. Chest radiography revealed a right pneumothorax. Upon reviewing previous chest computed tomography images, we ascertained that the air-trapping bulla in the azygoesophageal recess had grown consistently over the previous 2 years. Persistent air leakage was observed after chest tube drainage. Video-assisted thoracoscopy revealed a thin-walled bulla with a fistula in the azygoesophageal recess. We encountered an expanding bulla in the azygoesophageal recess that eventually caused spontaneous pneumothorax. Definitive management guidelines for secondary spontaneous pneumothorax caused by azygoesophageal recess bullae with unique features remain elusive.

Abstract Microwaves, long used as a convenient household appliance, have been increasingly used in industrial processes such as organic synthesis and oil processing. It has been proposed that microwaves can enhance these chemical processes via a non-thermal effect. Here we report the instantaneous effect of microwaves on the permittivity and phase velocity of light in water through the in-situ measurement of changes in refractive index. Microwave irradiation was found to reduce the water refractive index (RI) sharply. The reduction increased as a function of microwave power to a far greater extent than expected from the change in temperature. The phase velocity of light in water increases up to ~ 5% (RI of 1.27) during microwave irradiation. Upon stopping irradiation, the return to the equilibrium RI was delayed by up to 30 min. Our measurement shows that microwaves have a profound non-thermal and long-lasting effect on the properties of water. Further investigation is planned to verify if the observed RI reduction is restricted to the region near the surface or deep inside water bulk. The observation suggests a relationship between microwave-induced and the enhanced aqueous reactions.

The effect of the material characteristics on the infiltration behaviour of chloride ions in concrete containing a combination of an expansive additive and a calcium-aluminate-based additive has been investigated. The same level of salt resistance as that of blast furnace slug cement was exhibited even for a small addition amount. In addition, the permeation behaviour of chloride ions was largely influenced by the immobilisation capacity and pore network. When these changes were dominant, the results suggested that the characteristics based on the Fick diffusion equations may not necessarily reproduce the actual permeation behaviour of chloride ions.

Abstract Aims There is currently no gold standard in evaluating frailty in patients with heart failure (HF), and the prognostic value of frailty according to the Canadian Study of Health and Aging Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) on mortality in patients with HF is still unknown. Methods and results Among consecutive 596 patients after their discharge from HF in Kokura Memorial Hospital (Kitakyushu, Japan) during 2015, their frailty at discharge was assessed according to CFS. Patients were classified into three groups: low (N = 232, 38.9%), intermediate (N = 230, 38.6%), and high (N = 134, 22.5%). The primary endpoint was defined as 2 year all‐cause death. The mean age was 76.6 ± 10.1 years, and 55.3% were men in entire cohort. There were significant differences in age, living environment, and dementia among low, intermediate, and high CFS groups. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and co‐morbidities such as severe renal failure and severe anaemia tended to increase with frailty severity, while body mass index (BMI) and albumin level tended to decrease with frailty severity. Background: Ondansetron is a highly effective antiemetic for the treatment of nausea and vomiting. However, this medication has also been associated with QT prolongation. Pharmacogenomic information on therapeutic response to ondansetron exists, but no investigation has been performed on genetic factors that influence the cardiac safety of this medication. Methods: Three patient groups receiving ondansetron were recruited and followed prospectively (pediatric post-surgical patients n = 101; pediatric oncology patients n = 98; pregnant women n = 62). Electrocardiograms were conducted at baseline, and 5- and 30-min post-ondansetron administration, to determine the effect of ondansetron treatment on QT interval. Pharmacogenomic associations were assessed via analyses of comprehensive CYP2D6 genotyping and genome-wide association study data. Results: In the entire cohort, 62 patients (24.1%) met the criteria for prolonged QT, with 1.2% of the cohort exhibiting unsafe QT prolongation. The most significant shift from baseline occurred at five minutes post-ondansetron administration (P = 9.8 × 10−4). CYP2D6 activity score was not associated with prolonged QT. Genome-wide analyses identified novel associations with a missense variant in TLR3 (rs3775291; P = 2.00 × 10−7) and a variant linked to the expression of SLC36A1 (rs34124313; P = 1.97 × 10−7). Conclusions: This study has provided insight into the genomic basis of ondansetron-induced cardiac changes and has emphasized the importance of genes that have been implicated in serotonin-related traits. These biologically-relevant findings represent the first step towards understanding this adverse event with the overall goal to improve the safety of this commonly used antiemetic medication.

Interaural timing and level differences had been considered the two important cues for horizontal sound localization. Here, the authors show that the third cue, spectral information, plays an essential role in the encoding of the azimuthal auditory map in the mouse superior colliculus.

Sensory information from different modalities is processed in parallel, and then integrated in associative brain areas to improve object identification and the interpretation of sensory experiences. The Superior Colliculus (SC) is a midbrain structure that plays a critical role in integrating visual, auditory, and somatosensory input to assess saliency and promote action. Although the response properties of the individual SC neurons to visuoauditory stimuli have been characterized, little is known about the spatial and temporal dynamics of the integration at the population level. Here we recorded the response properties of SC neurons to spatially restricted visual and auditory stimuli using large-scale electrophysiology. We then created a general, population-level model that explains the spatial, temporal, and intensity requirements of stimuli needed for sensory integration. We found that the mouse SC contains topographically organized visual and auditory neurons that exhibit nonlinear multisensory integration. We show that nonlinear integration depends on properties of auditory but not visual stimuli. We also find that a heuristically derived nonlinear modulation function reveals conditions required for sensory integration that are consistent with previously proposed models of sensory integration such as spatial matching and the principle of inverse effectiveness. Author summary Integrating visual and auditory stimuli that occur at the same location and time improves our ability to identify and respond to external events. This type of sensory integration is an important brain function, and its deficits are known symptoms of patients with autism and schizophrenia. Abstract Background With an increasing demand for mother’s own milk to be viewed as a primary source of nutritional support in the care of very small and preterm infants, mothers of preterm infants may be at risk of expressing suboptimal amounts of milk. The use of a galactogogue is often considered when these mothers are still having challenges in breast milk production. Methods For this analysis, the study participants were the 90 mothers who participated in the EMPOWER trial and, at the time of randomization, were stratified by days post-delivery, 8–14 days and 15–21 days. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of mothers in each of the days post-delivery groups who achieved a 50% increase in breast milk volume on day 14 of the study treatment period. Results There was no significant difference in the proportion of mothers in the 8–14 days group (75.0%) who achieved a 50% increase in breast milk volume on day 14 of the study treatment period. compared to those in the 15–21 days group (60.9%), OR 1.93 (95% CI 0.78, 4.76; p = 0.15). Because comorbidities and exposure to antenatal corticosteroids between the groups of mothers were viewed as potential confounders, a logistic regression was performed after controlling for these two variables with the adjusted OR being 1.84 (0.73, 4.64; p = 0.19). Objectives: Recommendations regarding the need to use alcohol prior to vaccine injections are inconsistent and based on low-level evidence. The objective was to assess the effectiveness of alcohol in reducing local skin reactions and infection post-vaccination. Methods: Randomized controlled trial in a pediatric clinic. A research assistant cleansed the skin with alcohol at (swab group) or adjacent to (control group) the pre-defined injection site(s). Clinicians, parents and children were blinded to group allocation. Parents reported local skin reactions using paper diaries for 15 days post-vaccination (Day 0–14). Telephone interviews were conducted Day 1, 5, and 14. The Brighton Collaboration criteria were used to diagnose cellulitis and infectious abscess Day 5 and afterward. Results: 170 children participated (May-November 2017). Baseline characteristics did not differ (p > 0.05) between groups. Children received 1–4 separate injections. There were no differences between swab and control groups in the incidence of any local skin reactions (58% vs. 54%), and specifically, pain (45% vs. 40%), redness (26% vs. 21%), swelling (20% vs. 13%), warmth (19% vs. 27%), and spontaneous drainage of pus (0% in both groups) over the post-vaccination follow-up period. Day 5 data was available for 99% of participants from diaries and telephone surveys; there were no cases of cellulitis or infectious abscess. Conclusion: These findings are the first direct evidence for vaccine injections demonstrating that cleansing the skin with alcohol may not be needed. Our study is underpowered; however, to detect a difference in incidence of skin infection, future research is recommended.

Introduction: Cure rates for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have reached an all-time high (>90%); however, neurocognitive difficulties continue to affect quality of life in at least a subset of survivors. There are relatively few quantitative neuroimaging studies in child and adolescent ALL survivors treated with chemotherapy only. Use of different outcome measures or limited sample sizes restrict our ability to make inferences about patterns of brain development following chemotherapy treatment. In this study, we used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate brain outcomes in ALL survivors, comparing against a group of typically developing, cancer free peers. Materials and methods: Participants included 71 ALL survivors, on average 8 years after diagnosis and 8–18 years of age, and 83 typically developing controls. Anatomical MRI was performed to evaluate brain structure; diffusion and magnetization transfer MRI were used to examine brain tissue microstructure. Results: Successful MRI scans were acquired in 67 survivors (94%) and 82 controls (99%). Structurally, ALL survivors exhibited widespread reductions in brain volume, with 6% less white matter and 5% less gray matter than controls (p = 0.003 and 0.0006 respectively). Much of the brain appeared affected – 71 of 90 evaluated structures showed smaller volume – with the most notable exception being the occipital lobe, where no significant differences were observed. Average full-scale IQ in the survivor and control groups were 95 (CI 92–99) and 110 (CI 107–113), respectively. Using data from the NIH Pediatric MRI Data Repository, we evaluated the extent to which elevated IQ in the control group might affect the structural differences observed. We estimated that two thirds of the observed brain differences were attributable to ALL and its treatment. In addition to the structural changes, survivors showed, on average, globally lower white matter fractional anisotropy (-3%) and higher radial diffusivity (+5%) (p < 10−6), but no differences in magnetization transfer ratio. Conclusions: Neuroanatomical alterations in late childhood and adolescent ALL survivors treated with chemotherapy-only protocols are widespread, with white matter being somewhat more affected than gray matter. These MRI results indicate brain development is altered in ALL survivors and highlight the need to examine how these alterations emerge.

Abstract Background Preterm birth alters the normal sequence of lactogenesis. Lactogenesis I may not yet have started when mothers of very preterm infants (≤ 29 weeks gestation) have given birth. Preterm infants are too small or too ill to initiate suckling in the immediate postpartum period thus altering the normal cascade of event for lactogenesis II. With an increasing demand for mother’s own milk as a primary source of nutritional support in the care of very small and preterm infants, mothers of these infants are often at risk of expressing inadequate amounts of milk. The use of galactogogues is often considered when mothers of preterm infants are still having challenges in breast milk production. What is not clear in the literature is the role that pregnancy gestation at birth plays in successful response to galactogogues. Our objective for this study was to evaluate the role of pregnancy gestation at birth on a mother’s response to the treatment interventions in the EMPOWER trial. Methods For this analysis, the study participants are the 90 mothers who participated in the EMPOWER trial and were in the stratified in two gestational age groups, 230/7–266/7 weeks and 270/7–296/7 weeks at the time of randomization. The primary outcome measures were the proportion of mothers in each of the gestational age groupings who achieved a 50% increase in breast milk volume on day 14 and day 28 of the study treatment period. Results On day 14 of the study treatment, there was no significant difference in the proportion of mothers in the 23–26 weeks gestation group (72.9%) compared to those in the 27–29 weeks gestation group (64.2%), OR 1.51 (95% CI 0.60, 3.78; p = 0.38). Similarly, there was no difference in the proportion of mothers between the two gestational age groupings on day 28 of the study treatment, 70.3% compared to 62.3%, OR 1.43 (95% CI 0.58, 3.51; p = 0.43). Pediatric medicine: Diagnostic sequencing offers useful pharmacogenetic data, too Genome sequencing, in addition to helping diagnose disease, can inform medication decisions and improve drug safety for children. Ronald Cohn, Shinya Ito and colleagues at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, studied a cohort of 98 pediatric patients who had undergone whole genome sequencing to help diagnose their unexplained congenital malformations or neurodevelopmental disorders. The researchers looked for 67 DNA variants found in 19 genes with known effects on drug responses. They used targeted genotyping to assess the accuracy of the sequence data. Sequencing proved to be more than 99% accurate for all but one of the pharmacologically important genes, showing the power of diagnostic genomic sequencing to identify DNA variants in children that affect medication safety and effectiveness. However, the accuracy of the method may need to be validated for each relevant gene.

Background Amlodipine is used for the treatment of hypertension, but reports on its use in early pregnancy are limited. Methods and Results In the present study, we recruited 231 women with chronic hypertension, including those who received amlodipine or other antihypertensives during early pregnancy, and investigated frequencies of morphologic abnormalities in their 231 offspring. Specifically, we evaluated 48 neonates exposed to amlodipine in the first trimester (amlodipine group, Group A), 54 neonates exposed to antihypertensives other than amlodipine (other antihypertensive group, Group O), and 129 neonates not exposed to antihypertensives (no‐antihypertensive group, Group N). The number of morphologic abnormalities of offspring in each group were 2 in Group A (4.2%; 95% CI, 0.51–14.25); 3 in Group O (5.6%; 95% CI, 1.16–15.39) and 6 in Group N (4.7%; 95% CI, 1.73–9.85). The odds ratio of the primary outcome comparing Group A and Group O was 0.74 (95% CI: 0.118–4.621) and Group A and Group N was 0.89 (95% CI: 0.174–4.575). Conclusions The odds of birth defects in Group A in the first trimester were not significantly different from those with or without other antihypertensives.

Background: The medical information about anemia prevention produced by health-care professionals is difficult to understand because of its complicated terminology. Purpose: To evaluate quantitatively for the first time the clarity of existing online information about anemia prevention in Japanese. Methods: On January 20, 2023, we used the keyword "anemia" to evaluate 200 websites, followed by use of the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for Printable Materials (PEMAT-P) and the Clear Communication Index (CCI) to evaluate understandability and actionability. The PEMAT-P and CCI were both evaluated as excellent in terms of understandability and actionability, with cutoff values of 70% or higher and 90% or higher, respectively. We also evaluated readability using jReadability and quality using the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Benchmark Criteria and The Global Quality Scale (GQS). Results: The PEMAT-P scores for understandability and actionability exceeded the cutoff value in 59 (29.5%) and 36 cases (18.0%), respectively, while the CCI exceeded the cutoff value in two cases (1.0%). With respect to web pages, nine (4.5%) were considered "readable" and 96 (48.0%) "neutral." Discussion: These findings suggest that websites on anemia in Japanese have poor "understandability," "actionability," and "readability," and are therefore inaccessible to the general public. Translation to Health Education Practice: Improving existing anemia websites using indicators such as the PEMAT-P could improve behaviors related to anemia prevention.

The superior colliculus (SC) is a midbrain area where visual, auditory and somatosensory information are integrated to initiate motor commands. The SC plays a central role in visual information processing in the mouse; it receives projections from 85% to 90% of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). While the mouse SC has been a long-standing model used to study retinotopic map formation, a number of technological advances in mouse molecular genetic techniques, large-scale physiological recordings and SC-dependent visual behavioral assays have made the mouse an even more ideal model to understand the relationship between circuitry and behavior.

BackgroundWomen are commonly prescribed a variety of medications during pregnancy. As most organ systems are affected by the substantial anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, it is expected that pharmacokinetics (PK) (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs) would also be affected in ways that may necessitate changes in dosing schedules. The objective of this study was to systematically identify existing clinically relevant evidence on PK changes during pregnancy.Methods and findingsSystematic searches were conducted in MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Ovid), and Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), from database inception to August 31, 2015. An update of the search from September 1, 2015, to May 20, 2016, was performed, and relevant data were added to the present review. No language or date restrictions were applied. All publications of clinical PK studies involving a group of pregnant women with a comparison to nonpregnant participants or nonpregnant population data were eligible to be included in this review. A total of 198 studies involving 121 different medications fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In these studies, commonly investigated drug classes included antiretrovirals (54 studies), antiepileptic drugs (27 studies), antibiotics (23 studies), antimalarial drugs (22 studies), and cardiovascular drugs (17 studies). Overall, pregnancy-associated changes in PK parameters were often observed as consistent findings among many studies, particularly enhanced drug elimination and decreased exposure to total drugs (bound and unbound to plasma proteins) at a given dose. However, associated alterations in clinical responses and outcomes, or lack thereof, remain largely unknown.ConclusionThis systematic review of pregnancy-associated PK changes identifies a significant gap between the accumulating knowledge of PK changes in pregnant women and our understanding of their clinical impact for both mother and fetus. It is essential for clinicians to be aware of these unique pregnancy-related changes in PK, and to critically examine their clinical implications.

Recent work has shown that functional connectivity among cortical neurons is highly varied, with a small percentage of neurons having many more connections than others. Also, recent theoretical developments now make it possible to quantify how neurons modify information from the connections they receive. Therefore, it is now possible to investigate how information modification, or computation, depends on the number of connections a neuron receives (in-degree) or sends out (out-degree). To do this, we recorded the simultaneous spiking activity of hundreds of neurons in cortico-hippocampal slice cultures using a high-density 512-electrode array. This preparation and recording method combination produced large numbers of neurons recorded at temporal and spatial resolutions that are not currently available in any in vivo recording system. We utilized transfer entropy (a well-established method for detecting linear and nonlinear interactions in time series) and the partial information decomposition (a powerful, recently developed tool for dissecting multivariate information processing into distinct parts) to quantify computation between neurons where information flows converged. We found that computations did not occur equally in all neurons throughout the networks. Surprisingly, neurons that computed large amounts of information tended to receive connections from high out-degree neurons. However, the in-degree of a neuron was not related to the amount of information it computed. To gain insight into these findings, we developed a simple feedforward network model. We found that a degree-modified Hebbian wiring rule best reproduced the pattern of computation and degree correlation results seen in the real data. Interestingly, this rule also maximized signal propagation in the presence of network-wide correlations, suggesting a mechanism by which cortex could deal with common random background input. These are the first results to show that the extent to which a neuron modifies incoming information streams depends on its topological location in the surrounding functional network.

ISO 16047 was published in 2005, where test method and conditions to quantify the tightening characteristics for threaded fasteners are specified. However, there is no testing apparatus applicable to various types of threaded fasteners due to the constraint on the accuracy of ±2% of the values to be measured. The goal of this study is to develop a new tightening testing machine to be used for the torque/clamp force testing in accordance with ISO 16047. In this study, the load/torque cell system having new constructions with piezoelectric force sensors were developed and evaluated, which can be used to measure the clamp force and torques acting on bolt shank and on bearing surfaces, respectively. The piezoelectric sensor has the merits in terms of the resolution of the measurement and its high rigidity. However, experience shows that there are some disadvantages as well to be removed to achieve the measurement with sufficient accuracy. Experimental and analytical considerations have been performed to seek the root causes that may generate the measuring error. Consequently, the possibility to exclude such bad effects as the crosstalk and the drift of the sensitivity was confirmed, and the appropriate design concepts and parameters were proposed.

Recent studies have emphasized the importance of multiplex networks--interdependent networks with shared nodes and different types of connections--in systems primarily outside of neuroscience. Though the multiplex properties of networks are frequently not considered, most networks are actually multiplex networks and the multiplex specific features of networks can greatly affect network behavior (e.g. fault tolerance). Thus, the study of networks of neurons could potentially be greatly enhanced using a multiplex perspective. Given the wide range of temporally dependent rhythms and phenomena present in neural systems, we chose to examine multiplex networks of individual neurons with time scale dependent connections. To study these networks, we used transfer entropy--an information theoretic quantity that can be used to measure linear and nonlinear interactions--to systematically measure the connectivity between individual neurons at different time scales in cortical and hippocampal slice cultures. We recorded the spiking activity of almost 12,000 neurons across 60 tissue samples using a 512-electrode array with 60 micrometer inter-electrode spacing and 50 microsecond temporal resolution. To the best of our knowledge, this preparation and recording method represents a superior combination of number of recorded neurons and temporal and spatial recording resolutions to any currently available in vivo system. We found that highly connected neurons ("hubs") were localized to certain time scales, which, we hypothesize, increases the fault tolerance of the network. Conversely, a large proportion of non-hub neurons were not localized to certain time scales. In addition, we found that long and short time scale connectivity was uncorrelated. Finally, we found that long time scale networks were significantly less modular and more disassortative than short time scale networks in both tissue types. As far as we are aware, this analysis represents the first systematic study of temporally dependent multiplex networks among individual neurons.

Understanding the detailed circuitry of functioning neuronal networks is one of the major goals of neuroscience. Recent improvements in neuronal recording techniques have made it possible to record the spiking activity from hundreds of neurons simultaneously with sub-millisecond temporal resolution. Here we used a 512-channel multielectrode array system to record the activity from hundreds of neurons in organotypic cultures of cortico-hippocampal brain slices from mice. To probe the network structure, we employed a wavelet transform of the cross-correlogram to categorize the functional connectivity in different frequency ranges. With this method we directly compare, for the first time, in any preparation, the neuronal network structures of cortex and hippocampus, on the scale of hundreds of neurons, with sub-millisecond time resolution. Among the three frequency ranges that we investigated, the lower two frequency ranges (gamma (30-80 Hz) and beta (12-30 Hz) range) showed similar network structure between cortex and hippocampus, but there were many significant differences between these structures in the high frequency range (100-1000 Hz). The high frequency networks in cortex showed short tailed degree-distributions, shorter decay length of connectivity density, smaller clustering coefficients, and positive assortativity. Our results suggest that our method can characterize frequency dependent differences of network architecture from different brain regions. Crucially, because these differences between brain regions require millisecond temporal scales to be observed and characterized, these results underscore the importance of high temporal resolution recordings for the understanding of functional networks in neuronal systems.

Transfer entropy (TE) is an information-theoretic measure which has received recent attention in neuroscience for its potential to identify effective connectivity between neurons. Calculating TE for large ensembles of spiking neurons is computationally intensive, and has caused most investigators to probe neural interactions at only a single time delay and at a message length of only a single time bin. This is problematic, as synaptic delays between cortical neurons, for example, range from one to tens of milliseconds. In addition, neurons produce bursts of spikes spanning multiple time bins. To address these issues, here we introduce a free software package that allows TE to be measured at multiple delays and message lengths. To assess performance, we applied these extensions of TE to a spiking cortical network model (Izhikevich, 2006) with known connectivity and a range of synaptic delays. For comparison, we also investigated single-delay TE, at a message length of one bin (D1TE), and cross-correlation (CC) methods. We found that D1TE could identify 36% of true connections when evaluated at a false positive rate of 1%. For extended versions of TE, this dramatically improved to 73% of true connections. In addition, the connections correctly identified by extended versions of TE accounted for 85% of the total synaptic weight in the network. Cross correlation methods generally performed more poorly than extended TE, but were useful when data length was short. A computational performance analysis demonstrated that the algorithm for extended TE, when used on currently available desktop computers, could extract effective connectivity from 1 hr recordings containing 200 neurons in ∼5 min. We conclude that extending TE to multiple delays and message lengths improves its ability to assess effective connectivity between spiking neurons. These extensions to TE soon could become practical tools for experimentalists who record hundreds of spiking neurons.

An optical wireless communication (OWC) system based on a light-emitting-diode (LED) transmitter and a camera receiver has been developed for use in the automotive area. The automotive OWC system will require Mb/s-class data rates and the ability to quickly detect LEDs from an image. The key to achieving this is improvements to the capabilities of the image sensor mounted on the camera receiver. In this paper, we report on a novel OWC system equipped with an optical communication image sensor (OCI), which is newly developed using CMOS technology. To obtain higher transmission rates, the OCI employs a specialized “communication pixel (CPx)” capable of responding promptly to optical intensity variations. Furthermore, a new quick LED detection technique, based on a 1-bit flag image which only reacts to high-intensity objects, is formulated. The communication pixels, ordinary image pixels, and associated circuits (including 1-bit flag image output circuits) are then integrated into the OCI. This paper describes the design, fabrication, and capabilities of the OCI, as well as the development of the LED and image sensor based OWC system, which boasts a 20-Mb/s/pixel data rate without LED detection and a 15-Mb/s/pixel data rate with a 16.6-ms real-time LED detection.

Background and Objectives: To examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ-J) for patients with mental illness, and to determine the characteristics of eating behavior among these patients when compared with healthy controls. Methods and Study Design: In May 2018, 120 outpatients with mental illness and 132 healthy controls were surveyed. First, exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the DEBQ-J statement responses for both patients and healthy controls. Next, reliability coefficients were calculated for the eating behavior scale scores (emotional, restrained, and external eating) extracted from the factor analysis. The association between BMI and eating behavior was examined using Student's t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The DEBQ-J had a similar factor structure to that of the original DEBQ for healthy controls, with a cumulative contribution of 52.4% for the three factors, and alpha coefficients ranging from 0.87 to 0.91. For patients, factor analysis showed that four statements classified as emotional eating items in the original DEBQ were recategorized as external eating items, and the percentage of patients with obesity (BMI=25) was 57.5%, compared with only 25.4% among the healthy controls. The patients with obesity tended to score higher on the external eating scale than did those with BMI<25. Conclusions: Patients tended to blur the distinction between emotional feelings of mental irritability or anxiety and feelings in response to external stimuli. Monitoring of the DEBQ-J external eating score and appropriate intervention among patients living with mental illness may help to prevent obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
