We propose a method to generate circularly polarized (CP) attosecond pulses by the interactions of a relativistic-intensity right-hand CP laser pulse and magnetized sub-critical plasma. It is theoretically and numerically demonstrated that when an external magnetic field with an appropriate strength is applied to a sub-critical plasma along the laser propagation, the ponderomotive force of a right-hand CP laser at the vacuum-plasma boundary is significantly enhanced. The electrons are then steadily pushed forward until the timely-increasing charge separation field becomes strong enough to pull them back, forming a dense and counter-moving electron sheet. The relativistic-velocity electron sheet works as a flying mirror to compress the tail of the driving laser and efficiently generate a single CP attosecond pulse. The present scheme shows a stable efficiency on different scale lengths of preplasma and thus may provide a robust way to generate bright and CP attosecond pulses.

A Kirchhoff-type problem with concave-convex nonlinearities is studied. By constrained variational methods on a Nehari manifold, we prove that this problem has a sign-changing solution with least energy. Moreover, we show that the energy level of this sign-changing solution is strictly larger than the double energy level of the ground state solution.

We demonstrate a simple but efficient way to optimize and improve the properties of laser-wakefield-accelerated electron beams (e beams) based on a controllable shock-induced density down-ramp injection that is achieved with an inserted tunable shock wave. The e beams are tunable from 400 to 800 MeV with charge ranges from 5 to 180 pC. e beams with high reproducibility (of ~95% in consecutive 100 shots) were produced in elaborate experiments with an average root- mean-square energy spread of 0.9% and an average divergence of 0.3 mrad. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations were also performed to accordingly verify and uncover the process of the injection and the acceleration. These tunable e beams will facilitate practical applications for advanced accelerator beam sources.

The aim of this paper is to study the following Schrodinger–Poisson problem ( SP ) − △ u + V ( x ) u + e ϕ ( x ) u = λ f ( u ) , in R 3 , − △ ϕ = u 2 , lim | x | → + ∞ ϕ ( x ) = 0 , in R 3 , u > 0 , in R 3 . We prove existence and concentration of positive solutions to system ( SP ) for suitable range of e and λ .

The generation and transport of fast electrons play an important role in intense laser interaction with dense plasma. Here, we experimentally study fast electron generation using a planar aluminum target obliquely irradiated at a large incident angle by an ultrashort high-temporal-contrast relativistic laser pulse. Simulations show that for near-relativistic laser intensities, s-polarized lasers above a certain energy threshold can generate energetic electrons ( }}\,{\text{500}}\;{\text{keV}}$?> E e > 500 keV ) with a high yield, which is different from the case of low laser contrast. It is also shown that the most energetic electrons are emitted along the target’s surface and accelerated to high energies. The key features of the acceleration regimes of lasers with different polarizations are also given.

The Faraday effect, caused by a magnetic-field-induced change in the optical properties, takes place in a vast variety of systems from a single atomic layer of graphenes to huge galaxies. Currently, it plays a pivot role in many applications such as the manipulation of light and the probing of magnetic fields and material's properties. Basically, this effect causes a polarization rotation of light during its propagation along the magnetic field in a medium. Here, we report an extreme case of the Faraday effect where a linearly polarized ultrashort laser pulse splits in time into two circularly polarized pulses of opposite handedness during its propagation in a highly magnetized plasma. This offers a new degree of freedom for manipulating ultrashort and ultrahigh power laser pulses. Together with technologies of ultra-strong magnetic fields, it may pave the way for novel optical devices, such as magnetized plasma polarizers. Laser light trapping in cavities in near-critical density plasmas is studied by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The laser ponderomotive force can create in the plasma a vacuum cavity bounded by a thin overcritical-density wall. The laser light is self-consistently trapped as a half-cycle electromagnetic wave in the form of an oscillon-caviton structure until it is slowly depleted through interaction with the cavity wall. When the near-critical density plasma contains a preformed cavity, laser light can become a standing wave in the latter. The trapped light is characterized as multi-peak structure. The overdense plasma wall around the self-generated and preformed cavities induced by the laser ponderomotive force is found to be crucial for pulse trapping. Once this wall forms, the trapped pulse can hardly penetrate.

The effect of a transient magnetic field on right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) laser light propagation in overcritical-density plasma is investigated. When the electron gyrofrequency is larger than the wave frequency, RHCP light can propagate along the external magnetic field in an overcritical density plasma without resonance or cutoff. However, when the magnetic field falls to below the cyclotron resonance point, the propagating laser pulse will be truncated and the local plasma electrons resonantly heated. Particle-in-cell simulation shows that when applied to a thin slab, the process can produce intense two-cycle light pulses as well as long-lasting self-magnetic fields.

The formation and evolution of laser-induced post-solitons in near-critical density plasma are studied using the two-dimensional theoretical model and particle in cell simulation. The study shows that a considerable part of laser energy can penetrate plasma, which is then trapped in an empty cavity bounded by overdense plasma peaks. The self-trapped electromagnetic fields remain as a half-cycle standing wave. The amplitude of these electromagnetic fields peaks at the cavity center and vanishes at the boundary. As the cavity expands slowly, the field amplitude decreases, and the oscillation frequency is reduced to merely a small faction of laser frequency.

A two-dimensional theoretical model for the evolution of solid-density plasma irradiated by short, intense laser pulse is introduced. The electrons near the target surface are pushed inward by the radiation pressure, leading to a receding electron density jump where the laser is reflected. The electrostatic field of the resulting charge separation eventually balances the radiation pressure at the laser peak. After that the charge separation field becomes dominant. It accelerates and compresses the ions that are left behind until they merge with the compressed electrons, resulting in a high-density plasma peak. The laser pulse reflected from the receding electron density jump loses energy in plasma and suffers Doppler frequency red-shift, which can provide valuable information on the laser absorption rate and the speed of the receding electrons. Electron oscillations, including the u × B oscillations across the density jump at twice the laser frequency during the laser action, as well as the low-frequency oscillations appearing after laser action, are identified.

This paper is concerned with nonlocal Kirchhoffʼs equation { − ( a + b ∫ Ω | ∇ u | 2 ) Δ u = f ( x , u ) in Ω , u = 0 on ∂ Ω , via variational methods and invariant sets of descent flow. We obtain existence of signed and sign-changing solutions with asymptotically 3-linear bounded nonlinearity.

Long distance propagation of an energetic laser pulse with intensity slightly below that for multi-photon ionization in air is considered analytically, by noting that in the process, it is mainly the peak region of the pulse that interacts with the air molecules. Similar to that of much shorter femtosecond laser pulses of similar intensity, the affected air becomes slightly ionized and self-consistently forms a co-propagating thin and low-density plasma filament along the axis. It is found that a hundred-Joule-level laser pulse with a relatively large spot radius and pulse duration can propagate (also in the form of a self-consistent filament) tens of kilometers through the atmosphere. Such laser propagation properties should have applications in many areas.

We consider the existence of periodic solutions of the unbounded Hamiltonian system ( H ) ∂ t u - Δ x u = H v ( t , x , u , v ) - ∂ t v - Δ x v = H u ( t , x , u , v ) for ( t , x ) ∈ R × Ω . Unlike previous work, in our case the energy functional does not satisfy the Palais-Smale conditions.

We study existence and multiplicity of homoclinic type solutions to the following system of diffusion equations on R x Omega: {partial derivative(t)u - Delta(x)u + b(t, x) . del(x) u + V(x)u = H-v (t, x, u, v), {-partial derivative(t)v - Delta(x)v - b(t, x) . del(x) v + V(x)v = H-u (t, x, u, v), where Omega = R-N or Omega is a smooth bounded domain of R-N, z = (u, v) : R x Omega -> R-m x R-m, and b is an element of C-1 (R x (Omega) over bar, R-N), V is an element of C((Omega) over bar, R), H is an element of C-1 (R x (Omega) over bar x R-2m, R), all three depending periodically on t and x. We assume that H(t, x, 0) 0 and H is asymptotically quadratic or superquadratic as vertical bar z vertical bar -> infinity. The superquadratic condition is more general than the usual one. By establishing a proper variational setting based on some recent critical point theorems we obtain at least one nontrivial solution, and also infinitely many solutions provided H is moreover symmetric in z.

The nonlinearities are assumed to be super-quadratic at the infinite, which are different from those investigated previously.

We consider the existence of nontrivial periodic solutions for a superlinear Hamiltonian system: ( H ) J u ˙ - A ( t ) u + ∇ H ( t , u ) = 0 , u ∈ R 2 N , t ∈ R . We prove an abstract result on the existence of a critical point for a real-valued functional on a Hilbert space via a new deformation theorem. Different from the works in the literature, the new deformation theorem is constructed under the Cerami-type condition instead of Palais–Smale-type condition. In addition, the main assumption here is weaker than the usual Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz-type condition: 0 μ H ( t , u ) ⩽ u · ∇ H ( t , u ) , μ > 2 , | u | ⩾ R > 0 . This result extends theorems given by Li and Willem (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 189 (1995) 6–32) and Li and Szulkin (J. Differential Equations 112 (1994) 226–238).

In this paper, by the use of a fixed point theorem, many new necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of positive solutions in C[0,1]∩C1[0,1]∩C2(0,1) or C[0,1]∩C2(0,1) are presented for singular superlinear and sublinear second-order boundary value problems. Singularities at t=0, t=1 will be discussed.

The two stage electron acceleration model [Wu et al., Nucl. Fusion 57, 016007 (2017)] is extended to investigate the sources of super-hot electrons at intense circularly polarized (CP) laser solid interactions. It is found that in the presence of large scale pre-formed plasmas, super-high energetic electrons can be generated. For laser of intensity 1020 W/cm2 and pre-plasma of scale-length 10 μm, the cut-off energy of electrons by CP laser can be as high as 120 MeV compared with 100 MeV by linearly polarized laser. This unexpected acceleration can be also explained by the two-stage acceleration model. The envelop modulation of reflected CP laser is figured out, and a modified scaling law of the maximal-possible energy gain when including the modulation effect is obtained.

We study the existence of a nontrivial solution of the following elliptic boundary value problem with mixed type nonlinearities

A small hollow shell for trapping laser light is proposed. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation shows that under appropriate laser and plasma conditions a part of the radiation fields of an intense short laser pulse can enter the cavity of a small shell through an over-critical density plasma in an adjacent guide channel and become trapped. The trapped light evolves into a circulating radial wave pattern until its energy is dissipated.

By using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we propose a scheme for strong coupling of a petawatt laser with an opening gold cone filled with near-critical-density plasmas. When relevant parameters are properly chosen, most laser energy can be fully deposited inside the cone with only 10% leaving the tip opening. Due to the asymmetric ponderomotive acceleration by the strongly decayed laser pulse, high-energy-density electrons with net laser energy gain are accumulated inside the cone, which then stream out of the tip opening continuously, like a jet. The jet electrons are fully relativistic, with speeds around 0.98−0.998 c and densities at 1020/cm3 level. The jet can keep for a long time over 200 fs, which may have diverse applications in practice.

In a long subcritical density plasma, an ultrashort ultraintense laser pulse can self-organize into a fast but sub-relativistic propagating structure consisting of the modulated laser light and a large number of trapped electrons from the plasma. Upon impact of the structure with a solid foil target placed in the latter, the remaining laser light is reflected, but the dense and hot trapped electrons pass through the foil, together with the impact-generated target-frontsurface electrons to form a dense hot electron cloud at the back of the target suitable for enhancing target normal sheath acceleration of the target-backsurface ions. The accelerated ions are well collimated and of high charge and energy densities, with peak energies a full order of magnitude higher than that from target normal sheath acceleration without the subcritical density plasma. In the latter case, the space-charge field accelerating the ions is limited since they are formed only by the target-frontsurface electrons during the very short instant of laser reflection.

A new ion acceleration scheme, namely, target parallel Coulomb acceleration, is proposed in which a carbon plate sandwiched between gold layers is irradiated with intense linearly polarized laser pulses. The high electrostatic field generated by the gold ions efficiently accelerates the embedded carbon ions parallel to the plane of the target. The ion beam is found to be collimated by the concave-shaped Coulomb potential. As a result, a quasi-monoenergetic and collimated C6+-ion beam with an energy exceeding 10 MeV/nucleon is produced at a laser intensity of 5 × 1019 W/cm2.

Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is used to investigate radiation-pressure driven acceleration and compression of small solid-density plasma by intense laser pulses. It is found that multiple impacts by presently available short-pulse lasers on a small hemispheric shell target can create a long-living tiny quasineutral monoenergetic plasma bunch of very high energy density.

Monoenergetic collimated electron acceleration by two crossed laser beams is investigated through an analytical model and particle-in-cell simulations. Electron bunches with a total charge of order nano-Coulombs are accelerated by the axial electric field formed by the crossed laser beams to nearly 760 MeV with an energy spread of 2.7%. The transverse components of both electric and magnetic fields vanish along the axis, making the electron beam highly collimated. This acceleration scheme appears promising in producing high quality electron beams.

An analytical model for laser-plasma interaction during the oblique incidence by an ultrashort ultraintense p-polarized laser on a solid-density plasma is proposed. Both the resonant absorption and not-so-resonant absorption are self-consistently included. Different from the previous theoretical works, the physics of resonant absorption is found to be valid in more general conditions as the steepening of the electron density profile is considered. Even for a relativistic intensity laser, resonant absorption can still exist under certain plasma scale length. For shorter plasma scale length or higher laser intensity, the not-so-resonant absorption tends to be dominant, since the electron density is steepened to a critical level by the ponderomotive force. The laser energy absorption rates for both mechanisms are discussed in detail, and the difference and transition between these two mechanisms are presented.

The motion and the energy of electrons driven by the ponderomotive force in linearly polarized high-intensity laser standing wave fields are considered. The results show that there exists a threshold laser intensity, above which the motion of electrons incident parallel to the electric field of the laser standing waves undergoes a transition from regulation to chaos. We propose that the huge energy exchange between the electrons and the strong laser standing waves is triggered by inelastic scattering, which is related to the chaos patterns. It is shown that an electron's energy gain of tens of MeV can be realized for a laser intensity of 1020 W/cm2.

In this paper, we find new conditions to ensure the existence of infinitely many homoclinic type solutions for the Schrodinger equation - Δ u + V ( x ) u = g ( x , u ) for x ∈ R N . Assuming V ( x ) and g ( x , u ) depend periodically on x, we deal with the situations where g ( x , u ) is, as | u | → ∞ , asymptotically linear, or superlinear with certain hypothesis different from ones used in previous related study. Our approach is variational and we use the Cerami condition instead of the Palais–Smale one for deformation arguments.
