Abstract The present paper contains the investigations with respect to the optical appearance, redshift distribution, and observed energy flux of the thin accretion disk described by the Novikov-Thorne model in modified gravity (MOG) proposed by Moffat. The results show that the gravity coupling parameter $$\alpha $$ α plays an indispensable role in the size of direct and secondary images of the accretion disk, while the image profile is mainly affected by the observational angles. In addition, an increase of the parameter $$\alpha $$ α leads to that of the redshift factor, but a decrease in the radiation energy flux of the accretion disk. These results are due to the enhancement of the parameter $$\alpha $$ α that strengthens the black hole’s gravitational effects. By comparing the accretion disk images of the Schwarzschild-MOG black hole, the Schwarzschild black hole, and the Reissner–Nordström black hole, we point out that the Schwarzschild-MOG black hole exhibits the largest inner shadow and the lowest luminosity. This finding provides a potential way to distinguish Schwarzschild-MOG black holes from their counterparts in General Relativity.

Abstract We study the influence of parameter $$\alpha $$ α on the optical features of Schwarzschild-MOG black holes with different thin accretions in scalar-tensor-vector gravity. As $$\alpha $$ α increases from 0, the radii of the event horizon, photon sphere, and observed shadow increase in comparison with the Schwarzschild black hole. We constrain the parameter $$\alpha $$ α with the experimental data reported by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration for M87 $$^{*}$$ ∗ and Sagittarius A $$^{*}$$ ∗ . In the situation of spherical accretions, we unveil that the parameter $$\alpha $$ α has a positive effect on the shadow size but a negative effect on the observed specific intensities. Considering that the Schwarzschild-MOG black hole is surrounded by an optical and geometrically thin accretion disk, we find that the total observed specific intensities are mainly contributed by the direct emissions, while the photon rings and lensed rings provide small contributions. It is also found that with the increase of $$\alpha $$ α , the black hole shadow expands, the photon rings and lensed rings become larger and thicker. Besides, we emphasize that the boundary of the observed shadow cast by the aim black hole in the disk accretion scenario is determined by the direct emissions rather than the photon ring emissions. Consequently, we unveil that there is a linear relationship involving the critical impact parameter and the starting point of the direct emissions. This finding helps to use the experimental results of the Event Horizon Telescope to infer the critical impact parameter and to test General Relativity.

Abstract Corn fiber, a by-product from the corn processing industry, mainly composed of residual starch, cellulose, and hemicelluloses, is a promising raw material for producing cellulosic ethanol and value-added products due to its abundant reserves and low costs of collection and transportation. Now, several technologies for the production of cellulosic ethanol from corn fiber have been reported, such as the D3MAX process, Cellerate™ process, etc., and part of the technologies have also been used in industrial production in the United States. The ethanol yields range from 64 to 91% of the theoretical maximum, depending on different production processes. Because of the multicomponent of corn fiber and the complex structures highly substituted by a variety of side chains in hemicelluloses of corn fiber, however, there are many challenges in cellulosic ethanol production from corn fiber, such as the low conversion of hemicelluloses to fermentable sugars in enzymatic hydrolysis, high production of inhibitors during pretreatment, etc. Some technologies, including an effective pretreatment process for minimizing inhibitors production and maximizing fermentable sugars recovery, production of enzyme preparations with suitable protein compositions, and the engineering of microorganisms capable of fermenting hexose and pentose in hydrolysates and inhibitors tolerance, etc., need to be further developed. The process integration of cellulosic ethanol and value-added products also needs to be developed to improve the economic benefits of the whole process. This review summarizes the status and progresses of cellulosic ethanol production and potential value-added products from corn fiber and presents some challenges in this field at present.

Based on cognitive theory, we investigated the influence of executives’ ESG cognition on corporate green innovation using data from Chinese manufacturing listed companies from 2010 to 2019. The paper first constructs a metric of ESG cognition of company executives by presenting a quantitative analysis of data from their personal microblogs using textual analysis. The findings show that executive ESG perceptions significantly improve corporate green innovation. After addressing the endogeneity issue through a series of robustness tests, the findings of this paper still held true. Further research found that the enhancement effect of executive ESG perceptions on firms’ green innovation level was mainly found in the sample without heavy pollution and with lower financing constraints and a higher marketization process. This study makes an important contribution to the research on corporate green innovation based on the perspective of executive ESG cognition while also providing a theoretical basis and practical reference for corporate green innovation practices.

Osmanthus fragrans is one of the top ten traditional flowers in China. It is divided into three different groups according to its color. α-Carotene and β-carotene are the main determinants to distinguish the color differences between three groups. However, the dominant genes and transcription factors involved in carotenoid metabolism remain unclear. CPTA treatment (0.7 mmol · L−1) remarkably promoted lycopene, α-carotene and β-carotene contents in flowers. Transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed that CPTA treatment could trigger chain reactions in carotenoid metabolism pathway genes. Four up-regulated and 10 down-regulated transcription factors which have close association with carotenoid variation were significantly induced by CPTA treatment. The up-regulated TFs such as MYB43, MYB123, HSF, were further subjected to transcript expression determination in different cultivars with drastic colors. Among them, transcript expression of four up-regulated TFs coincided with the carotenoid accumulation in different cultivars. We selected up-regulated OfMYB43 to verify its function, which is related to stress tolerance and transcriptional regulation. Transient overexpression of OfMYB43 in O. fragrans flowers showed that it could remarkably promote the expression of PDS, ZISO, LCYE and CCD4, leading to increased accumulation of β-branch carotenoids. OfMYB43 was a potential positive regulator of carotenoid biosynthesis in O. fragrans flowers. This study provides insight into the molecular mechanism of carotenoid metabolism in O. fragrans.

Using Chinese listed companies as research setting, this paper constructs a measure of corporate competing culture through textual analysis on firms’ management discussion and analysis (MD&A) disclosures, and examines the impact of corporate competing culture on environmental investment. The results show that competing culture has a significant and positive impact on firms’ environmental investment, and the results remain robust to a battery of robustness tests. Moreover, the mediating analysis indicates that competing culture promotes corporate environmental investment through enhancing firms’ internal control quality. Furthermore, the heterogeneity results show that the positive impact of corporate competing culture on environmental investment is more pronounced in firms with larger size, stronger corporate governance, in high-polluting industry, and located in less developed regions. Our findings shed light on the importance of corporate competing culture and provide practical implications for corporate sustainable development.

To improve the fault-tolerant operation capability of bidirectional voltage source converter (BVSC), an improved model predictive current control (IMPCC) for fault-tolerant BVSC, is proposed with balanced DC-link capacitor voltage under unbalanced grid voltage. The proposed method can maintain continuous operation even if power device faults and unbalanced grid voltage faults occur together. A current predictive model of the fault-tolerant BVSC is established. By using grid voltages and 90° lagging signals in the αβ stationary coordinate system, the reference current calculation method is designed for BVSC to eliminate power ripple under unbalanced grid voltage, which can avoid the complex positive and negative sequence extraction. DC-link split capacitor voltage balancing is achieved by the improved cost function. Based on the current predictive model and improved cost function, the optimal space voltage vectors are selected for fault-tolerant BVSC. Compared to the existing predictive methods, the proposed IMPCC can balance DC-link capacitor voltage and eliminate the power ripples for fault-tolerant BVSC under unbalanced grid with simple implementation. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Using the context of the financial reform and the development of the non-state sector in China in the past decade, we examine the roles that the quality of information disclosure and property rights play in the allocation of different types of bank credit. We find that foreign banks and policy banks exercise “financial discrimination,” and that local commercial banks, large state-owned commercial banks, national joint-stock banks, local city commercial banks, and rural commercial banks not only exercise financial discrimination but also provide significant “financial support” to non-state-owned enterprises by providing more lending opportunities and larger loans. However, when enterprises commit information disclosure violations, the local commercial banks, national joint-stock banks, local city commercial banks, and rural commercial banks reverse their credit decisions and begin to exercise financial discrimination against non-state-owned enterprises. At the same time, large state-owned commercial banks continue to provide financial support to non-state-owned enterprises. We also find that the quality of the information disclosed by enterprises has a moderating effect rather than an intermediary effect on the relationship between property rights and bank loans. Overall, the results of this paper shine new light on the market-oriented reform of the banking industry, and provide new empirical evidence for the presence of financial discrimination in the supply of bank credit. Our findings also have practical implications for solving the financing difficulties of non-state-owned enterprises. Keywords: Quality of information disclosure, Property rights, Bank loans, PSM

The monoterpenes linalool and its oxides are the key aroma-active compounds in Osmanthus fragrans Lour. flowers. The glycosides of these monoterpenes accumulate throughout flowering, leading to considerable storage of potential aroma constituents that account for the majority of non-volatile aroma compounds. However, the UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT) responsible for the glycosylation of linalool and its oxides has not been clarified. Four candidate OfUGTs (UGT85A82, UGT85A83, UGT85AF3, and UGT85A84) with high homology to the known terpenoid UGTs were screened by transcriptome sequencing. Over-expression of the candidate OfUGTs in tobacco showed that UGT85A84 glycosylated linalool oxides in planta. Since the transcript levels of UGT85A84 were positively correlated with glycoside accumulation, the recombinant UGT85A84 protein was subjected to reactions with aglycones and sugar donors. Two formate adducts were exclusively detected in UDP-Glc with linalool and linalool oxide reactions by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), indicating that UDP-Glc was the specific sugar donor. The kinetic parameters demonstrated that UGT85A84 glycosylated both linalool and lianlool oxides in vitro. Further analysis demonstrated that the transcription levels of MEP pathway genes might play an important role in mediating terpenoid glycosylation. Our findings unraveled the mechanism underlying the glycosylation of essential aroma compounds in flowers. This study will facilitate the application of potential aroma contributors in future industries.

Due to the large-scale renewable energy connected to the power grid by power electronic converters, the inertia and stability of the power grid is declining. In order to improve the inertia and support the grid recovery, the three-phase converter works as a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) to respond to the frequency and voltage changes of the power grid. This paper proposes a model predictive control for the virtual synchronous generator (MPC-VSG) strategy, which can automatically control the converter output power with the grid frequency and voltage changes. Further consideration of fault-tolerant ability and reliability, the method based on improved voltage vector selection, and reconstructed current is used for MPC-VSG to ensure continuous operation for three-phase converters that have current-sensor faults, and improve the reconstruction precision. The proposed method can respond to the frequency and voltage changes of the power grid and has fault-tolerant ability, which is easy to realize without pulse width modulation (PWM) and a proportional-integral (PI) controller. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified by experiment.

We improve data extrapolation for truncated computed tomography (CT) projections by using Helgason-Ludwig (HL) consistency conditions that mathematically describe the overlap of information between projections. First, we theoretically derive a 2D Fourier representation of the HL consistency conditions from their original formulation (projection moment theorem), for both parallel-beam and fan-beam imaging geometry. The derivation result indicates that there is a zero energy region forming a double-wedge shape in 2D Fourier domain. This observation is also referred to as the Fourier property of a sinogram in the previous literature. The major benefit of this representation is that the consistency conditions can be efficiently evaluated via 2D fast Fourier transform (FFT). Then, we suggest a method that extrapolates the truncated projections with data from a uniform ellipse of which the parameters are determined by optimizing these consistency conditions. The forward projection of the optimized ellipse can be used to complete the truncation data. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using simulated data and reprojections of clinical data. Results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) is reduced substantially, compared to a state-of-the-art extrapolation method.

This paper proposes a constant-frequency model predictive direct power control (CF-MPDPC) method for a fault-tolerant bidirectional voltage-source converter (BVSC). The method can enhance the reliability and fault-tolerant operation capability of BVSCs in the condition of bridge-arm fault. Through the analysis of a fault-tolerant three-phase four-switch (TPFS) structure and the voltage vectors in the αβ stationary frame, the predictive power model and DC-link midpoint voltage offset suppression are established. According to model-predictive theory, fault-tolerant TPFS, and multivector control, the CF-MPDPC method for fault-tolerant BVSC is presented. The method realizes direct power control based on three output vectors with constant frequency, which can track the optimal vector more accurately and reduce current harmonics. Furthermore, the balanced control of DC-link capacitor voltages is also achieved by adding the term of DC-link midpoint voltage offset into the cost function. The balanced capacitor voltages protect the converter against the second faults caused by over-voltage operation of electrolytic capacitor. The simulation and experimental results prove that the fault-tolerant BVSC controlled by proposed method can maintain the continuous operation when the switching devices have fault. Low current harmonic content and stable output power exhibit good reliability and dynamic performance of the proposed CF-MPDPC for a fault-tolerant BVSC with a phase fault.

Summary: Plasmas under atmospheric pressure offer a high-temperature environment for material synthesis, but electrode ablation compromises purity. Here, we introduce an atmospheric-pressure microwave plasma (AMP) operated without electrodes to overcome the existing limitations in pure material synthesis. The distribution of the electrostatic field intensity inside a waveguide during AMP excitation was examined via electrostatic field simulations. The lateral and radial gas temperature distributions were also studied using optical emission spectroscopy. The AMP exhibited a uniform ultrahigh temperature (9,000 K), a large volume (102–104 cm3), and a response time on the millisecond level. AMP efficiently synthesized silicon nanoparticles, graphene, and graphene@Si–Fe core-shell nanoparticles within tens of milliseconds, ensuring purity and size control. We propose the “heat impulse” metric for evaluating the plasma characteristics (na, Tg, and t) in material synthesis, extended to other high-temperature plasmas. AMP is compact, cost-effective, and easy to assemble, promising for eco-friendly mass production of pure materials.

Precise assembly of active component with sophisticated confinement in electrocatalyst are promising to increase the active site exposure for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, PCN-333 films with mesopores are firstly assembled on titanium carbide MXene with the assistance of atomic layer deposited oxide nanomembrane. With the whereafter pyrolysis process, the composite is converted to N-doped porous carbon multi-layer containing Fe nanoparticles. The strong confinement of Fe active particle in carbon as well as great contact between metal and carbon effectively enhance active site exposure. Furthermore, this multi-layer porous structure provides high specific surface area and plentiful mesopores for electrolyte penetration. Due to the structural advantage, the composite can be well functioned in both acid and alkaline electrolytes with excellent HER performance, e.g., low overpotential/Tafel slope. The present work may have great potential in developing high efficiency transition-metal based electrocatalysts.

Although XLPE cables are widely used in power transmission and distribution systems, their insulating properties are susceptible to degradation due to thermal aging. In order to clarify the influence law of the thermal aging process on the structural and dielectric properties of XLPE cables, this paper investigates the thermal aging characteristics of XLPE cables by using polarization and depolarization current measurement. Results show that when the XLPE cable is aged at 140 °C, the crystallinity of the insulation layer appears to increase and then decrease. With the increase in aging time, micron-sized microvoids appear on the surface of the XLPE. At the same time, the DC conductivity and 0.1 Hz dielectric loss factor of the insulating layer increase with the aging time. The average DC conductivity increased from 2.26 × 10−16 S/m for new cables to 4.47 × 10−16 S/m after aging for 432 h, while the dielectric loss increased from 0.11% to 0.42%. The polarization characteristics of thermal-aged cables were further analyzed using the extended Debye model. Results indicate that the time constant of the third branch of the model increased significantly with increasing aging time. A correspondence between this parameter and the thermal aging time of the cable was established. Thermal aging can damage the crystalline structure of XLPE, so that the number of interfaces between the crystalline and amorphous regions of the material increases, resulting in structural damages and a decline in the dielectric properties of the cable insulation.
