Abstract

Terahertz detectors based on two-dimensional Dirac materials offer a new approach for room-temperature terahertz detection with high response and low noise. However, these devices can hardly show high response over a broad frequency range, mainly due to the poor absorption caused by their ultrathin nature. Here we apply metallic gratings to enhance the excitation efficiency of graphene plasmons. When nonzero source-drain bias is applied, graphene plasmons can generate terahertz response orthogonal to the polarization of the incidence. The response is attributed to the orthogonal overdamped plasmon rectification effect, and graphene plasmons-enhanced photo-thermoelectric effect. By comparing the normalized on/off ratio, the metallic gratings are found to effectively enhance the coupling efficiency between graphene plasmons and THz incidence, and thus the absorption and responsivity. The results are beneficial for improving the response of room temperature THz detectors.

6. Strong terahertz pulse induced Pockels and Kerr effect in crystalline quartz for ultrafast pulse switching.

Abstract

Ultrafast pulse switching is one of the key elements for ultrahigh speed communication technology. We study the terahertz (THz) induced birefringence response on the laser pulse through the quartz with different THz electric field strength. The magnitude of the observed Pockels signals scales linearly with the THz field amplitude, while the Kerr signals scale quadratically with the THz field amplitude. We demonstrate that the quartz is a good candidate for polarization modulation of 800 nm laser pulse, which has the advantages of low-cost, large bandgap, and negligible dispersion. Furthermore, our investigation finds application beyond ultrafast polarization switching, and the THz-induced polarization gating technique works as a tool for intense THz pulse detection. Abstract

The spin Hall effect of light, associated with spin-orbit interactions, describes a transport phenomenon with optical spin-dependent splitting, leading to a plethora of applications such as sensing, imaging, and spin-controlled nanophotonics. Although geometric meatsurfaces can mimic photonic spin Hall effect by spatially splitting left-hand circularly polarized and right-hand circularly polarized states of electromagnetic waves with anomalous refraction or reflection angles, the geometric phase generated by metasurfaces hinders metalenses to realize simultaneous focusing of different spin states, limiting further applications. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to realizing a spin Hall metalens that can focus terahertz waves with different spin states and flexibly manipulate spin-dependent focal points in multiple spatial dimensions based on a pure geometric phase. A dielectric metasurface consisting of micropillars with identical shape and different in-plane orientations is designed to realize the multidimensional manipulation of photonics spin Hall effect in terahertz region. Furthermore, helicity-dependent imaging is demonstrated by the terahertz spin Hall metalens. The uniqueness and robust approach for manipulating spin photons may have a significant impact on designing ultra-compact and multifunctional devices and spin photonics devices.

Abstract

Adhesion of the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is studied by vibrational spectroscopy using terahertz metamaterials. The features of metastructure absorption upon the deposition of histidine, albumin, and the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein films are investigated. An original technique for quantitative assessment of the efficiency of virus adhesion on the metamaterial surfaces are proposed and experimentally tested.

Abstract

Spintronic heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic (FM) and nonmagnetic (NM) have become increasingly important devices for terahertz (THz) pulse generation, named as spintronic THz emitter (STE). The recycling of the laser pump energy is known to have a key impact on further improvement of the THz emission. Here, an efficient and practical approach to enhance and manipulate THz generation based on a cascaded Pt/CoFe/Ta trilayer fabricated on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate is shown. Considering the refractive index n of PET is ≈1.61 at 1.55 eV and ≈1.75 at THz frequencies, it is anticipated that the femtosecond (fs) laser pulse propagates with a similar group velocity as the generated THz pulse. Therefore, the cascaded design enables all THz emission from each PET/STE propagating almost in-phase and yields a 1.55 times amplification compared to a single PET/STE. Two proof-of-concept demonstrations are experimentally presented. First one, a metasurface can be assembled with the cascaded PET/STE to manipulate the THz signal. Second one, the cascaded PET/STE is used to perform a spectroscopic measurement of riboflavin. These demonstrations highlight the potential of flexible PET/STE for building blocks of advanced functionalities, such as compact THz emitters, THz spectroscopic, and imaging systems. Abstract

The theory of guided waves in metal--dielectric planar multilayer structures is applied to reduce the loss and maximize optical nonlinearity for efficient terahertz-field generation in a surface electromagnetic wave by femtosecond laser pulses confined in a [x.sup(2)] nonlinear planar waveguide. For typical parameters of thin-film polymer waveguides and metal-dielectric interfaces, the optimal size of the [x.sup.(2)] waveguide core providing the maximum efficiency of terahertz plasmon-field generation is shown to be less than the wavelength of the optical pump field.
