7. Influence of Al11Ce3Size and Distribution on the Electrochemical Properties of Sonoprocessed Al-10 wt.% Ce Alloy

Abstract

Solidification of Al–Ce alloys under ultrasonic vibrations (Sonoprocessing) has a significant effect on the refining of Al11Ce3intermetallic, which plays a key role in controlling the properties of this group of high-performance characteristics. In the current research, a group of as-received Al-10 wt% Ce alloys that were sonoprocessed under different temperatures was characterized. The influence of Al11Ce3intermetallic size and distribution on the electrochemical properties of these alloys was investigated. Polarization tests in 3.5% NaCl solution were carried out and the recorded Tafel and impedance curves were studied. The corrosion test results were related to the microstructure characteristics as affected by sonoprocessing. Investigation of the as-received samples showed that ultrasonic vibrations broke the long lath-shaped particles of Al11Ce3and obviously decreased their size and increased their surface area fraction. Sonoprocessing at the optimum temperature, 655 °C, reduced the Al11Ce3particles size by 90% and enhanced their distribution in the matrix. This in its turn resulted in significant effects on their electrochemical behavior. Polarization tests showed that the corrosion rate of the un-sonoprocessed specimen decreased from ~ 0.00068 to 0.00006 mm/year after processing at the optimum condition (655 °C), and the polarization resistance increased from ~ 71 to 343 kΩ. By increasing the temperature of ultrasonic treatment beyond 655 °C, and the corresponding coarsening of the intermetallic particles, the corrosion rate slowly increased again, and concurrently, the polarization resistance decreased. The size and distribution of the intermetallic particles also influenced the formation of the corrosion pits, where the optimum sample showed shallow pits compared to those observed in the unprocessed specimen. This emphasizes the role of sonoprocessing in controlling the microstructure features and hence the electrochemical properties of Al-10 wt% Ce alloys.

Abstract

Background: The deviated nose is one that varies fromthe straight vertical orientation of the face. Correction of thisdeformity presents a challenge because it represents both afunctional problem (airway obstruction) and an aestheticproblem must be addressed.Patient and Methods: From December 2007 to December2017, 47 patients with crooked nose were operated; 26 malesand 21 females, aged from 18 years to 35 years, with themean age were 26.5 years.Results: Different techniques were applied depending ondeformity type and severity including; solitary osteotomy andseptorhinoplasty. Four patients needed iliac bone grafts fordeformity correction.Conclusion: Absolute correction of the crooked nose isa difficult task because of the complexity of the structuraldefect, the highly visible, well-defined subunits of the nasaldorsum, the need for highly skilled surgeon and the tendencyfor recurrence.

Abstract

Herein, MnS was prepared in situ with Ni3S2 directly on nickel foam to obtain a novel binder-free highly conductive electrode with a superb echinocactus-like morphology. The novel electrode gives ultra-high results when examined as an electrode for supercapacitor applications, such as an areal capacity of 796.7 mA h cm−2 equivalent to an areal capacitance of 2390 F cm−2 at a current density of 3 mA cm−2, in addition to low resistance and a remarkable potential window. Furthermore, a hybrid device using this electrode as a positive electrode and commercial activated carbon as a negative electrode was fabricated to examine the practical aspects of the novel electrode, which conducted a specific energy of 77.5 W h kg−1 at a specific power of 18 000 W kg−1. Interestingly, it preserved a specific energy of 33.3 W h kg−1 at a specific power of 50 000 W kg−1 and a satisfactory capacity retention of 80% after 2000 cycles with a Coulombic efficiency reaching 99%. 26. Perfluoroalkyl acids and their precursors in indoor air sampled in children's bedrooms

Abstract

The contamination levels and patterns of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and their precursors in indoor air of children's bedrooms in Finland, Northern Europe, were investigated. Our study is among the most comprehensive indoor air monitoring studies (n = 57) and to our knowledge the first one to analyse air in children's bedrooms for PFASs (17 PFAAs and 9 precursors, including two acrylates, 6:2 FTAC and 6:2 FTMAC). The most frequently detected compound was 8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (8:2 FTOH) with the highest median concentration (3570 pg/m3). FTOH concentrations were generally similar to previous studies, indicating that in 2014/2015 the impact of the industrial transition had been minor on FTOH levels in indoor air. However, in contrast to earlier studies (with one exception), median concentrations of 6:2 FTOH were higher than 10:2 FTOH. The C8 PFAAs are still the most abundant acids, even though they have now been phased out by major manufacturers. The mean concentrations of FOSE/As, especially MeFOSE (89.9 pg/m3), were at least an order of magnitude lower compared to previous studies. Collectively the comparison of FTOHs, PFAAs and FOSE/FOSAs with previous studies indicates that indoor air levels of PFASs display a time lag to changes in production of several years. This is the first indoor air study investigating 6:2 FTMAC, which was frequently detected (58%) and displayed some of the highest maximum concentrations (13 000 pg/m3). There were several statistically significant correlations between particular house and room characteristics and PFAS concentrations, most interestingly higher EtFOSE air concentrations in rooms with plastic floors compared to wood or laminate.

Abstract

KIR2DL2 and KIR2DL3 are two inhibitory members of the killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) family that share a common HLA-I preference in binding HLA from the C1 group. However, it is still unclear to what extent binding and function is equivalent between KIR2DL2 and 2DL3. Here, the authors present the crystal structures of KIR2DL2 and 2DL3 in complex with HLA-C*07:02 and observe differences in HLA-C recognition between KIR2DL2 and 2DL3, which correlates with differences in HLA-C binding preference as they show with mutagenesis and binding studies.

Abstract

Nanocrystalline Ni-Fe deposits with different composition and grain sizes were fabricated by electrodeposition. Deposits with iron contents in the range from 7 to 31% were obtained by changing the Ni(2+)/Fe(2+) mass ratio in the electrolyte. The deposits were found to be nanocrystalline with average grain size in the range 20-30 nm. The surface morphology was found to be dependent on Ni(2+)/Fe(2+) mass ratio as well as electroplating time. The grains size decreased with increasing the iron content, especially in case of short time electroplating. Increasing the electroplating time had no significant effect on grain size. The microhardness of the materials followed the regular Hall-Petch relationship with amaximum value (762 Hv) when applying Ni(2+)/Fe(2+) mass ratio equal to 9.8., QC 20120405

34. Studying some properties of CR-39 detector under the effect of different gamma doses.

Abstract

In the present study the bulk etch rate, the bulk activation energy, the track density and the degree of crystallinity percentage have been examined for gamma irradiated samples with 60Co source at doses ranging from 0 to 200 kGy. After gamma irradiation the samples were exposed to zirconium sand to collect α-particle tracks. Samples were etched at 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80°C in 6.25 N NaOH solution for 4 h. Results indicated that, the bulk etch rate increases with the increase of gamma absorbed dose at different etching temperatures. The bulk activation energy and the track density decreased with the increase of the gamma absorbed dose. The degree of crystallinity percentage for un-etched and etched samples also has been studied for different gamma doses. The increase in bulk etch rate and the decrease in both of bulk activation energy and track density with increase in the gamma dose may be due to the degradation in CR-39 polymeric material.
