With the development of superconducting magnet technology, high magnetic field experimental conditions can be more easily achieved than ever. Recently, a superconducting magnet with the center field of 25 T at 4.2 K and a worm bore size of 32 mm in diameter has been designed. The superconducting magnet consists of NbTi, Nb3Sn coils, and YBCO insert. The YBCO insert has been designed, fabricated, and tested in the liquid helium at the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEE, CAS), to prove the technical feasibility to achieve the target of 25 T. The YBCO insert has the inner diameter, outer diameter, and height of 41, 124, and 115 mm, respectively. The critical current distribution of the YBCO insert at 77 and 4.2 K, self-field, and in a 15-T background field is given in detail, based on the electrical properties of an YBCO-coated conductor. An analysis on the critical current shows that the YBCO insert has a minimum critical current of 19.4 A at 77 K, 119 A at 4.2 K, at the self-field, respectively, and 177 A at 4.2 K in a 15-T background field. Preliminary tests in the liquid nitrogen and liquid helium show that the analysis on the critical current is reasonable and agrees well with the test. The analysis on critical current at 4.2 K shows that it is much reasonable for the YBCO insert to obtain a central magnetic field of up to 24 T in a 15-T background field. In this paper, the design, critical current analysis, and preliminary experiment are reported.

A 25 T superconducting magnet with a 10 T YBCO high temperature superconducting (HTS) insert and a 15 T low temperature superconducting (LTS) (Nb 3 Sn and NbTi) outsert is fabricated. To design the superconducting magnet system, an optimal design software which combined the advantages of global optimization and local optimization has been proposed to study the number and type of coils to affect the final optimal results, and some important characteristics, for example, coil hoop stress and operating margin and quench characteristics are studied. The high temperature superconductor YBCO inserts with the inner diameter of 41 mm, the height of 115 mm, and outer diameter of 124 mm have been designed and fabricated with the operating temperature at 4.2 K. The outserts of NbTi and Nb 3 Sn with the inner diameter, outer diameter and height of 180.22, 443, and 400.5 mm, respectively, have been fabricated and tested. It reaches to the operating magnetic field at 15 T. The combined HTS and LTS coils can generate a central field of 25 T at 4.2 K. In this paper, the 25 T superconducting magnet with LTS and HTS coils are reported.

A high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet for 10 kJ superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system is designed by an improved optimal algorithm and cooled through GM cryocooler. In order to demonstrate the technology, a model HTS magnet made of Bi-2223/Ag tape to fabricate double-pancakes with the inner and outer diameters of 120 mm, 207.1 mm and height of 119 mm was fabricated and tested. The magnet is operating with GM cryocooler at 10 K. We have tested the Bi2223 HTS magnet at various ramping rates with 0.1-5.06 A/s. The experimental results show that the model HTS magnet is operating very stable. In the paper, we report the design of the HTS-SMES and fabrication technique for the model HTS magnet

We are carrying out a National High Technology Program in China to fabricate a magnetic separator by using a conduction-cooled Bi-based high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet. The magnet is made of Bi-2223 pancakes, and has the inner and outer coil diameters of 120 mm and 211.2 mm and coil height of 202.8 mm. The operating current is about 80 A. This magnet is cryocooler-cooled with no liquid helium and should generate a magnetic field of 3 T at a temperature of 20 K. In the paper, we report the design and fabrication technique of the HTS magnet.

Publisher Summary This chapter presents design and fabricating technique of a separator using the conduction-cooled high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet for a National High-technology Program in China. The magnet is made of Bi-2223 double pancake coils, and has inner and outer coil diameters of 120 mm and 211.2 mm respectively and coil height of 202.8 mm. The superconducting magnet includes 20 double pancake coils. The operating current is about 87.8 A. This magnet is cryocooler-cooled with no liquid helium and should generate a magnetic filed of 3 T at a temperature of 20 K. The HTS magnetic separators have a variety of industrial applications, most notably in the pharmaceutical, environmental, chemical fields, and treatment for waste water in steel industry. The conceptual design and fabrication details of a conduction-cooled HTS Reciprocating Magnetic Separator are reported. Reciprocating magnetic separators are used in waste water treatment for special steel factory. The salient features and results of the electromagnetic, thermal, and quench protection analyses have been discussed.
