Abstract

This study was conducted to provide a quantitative understanding of the influence of the different solution and electrospinning variables on the morphology and the mean diameter of electrospun polystyrene nanofibers. In this regard, the effect of different solvents and ionic additives on the electrical conductivity, viscosity, and surface tension of the electrospinning solutions and thereby the morphology of nanofibers were examined. The results indicated that the morphology of the fibers is extremely dependent on the solvent’s properties, especially volatility and electrical conductivity, and the ionic characteristics of additives. Finally, to estimate the optimal electrospinning conditions for production of nanofibers with minimum possible diameter, modeling of the process was undertaken using the response surface methodology. Experimentally, nanofibers with the finest diameter of 169 ï¿œ 21 nm were obtained under the optimized conditions, and these could be considered promising candidates for a wide practical range of applications ranging from biosensors to filtration., Funding agencies: Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran

Abstract

Composite nanofibers containing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were prepared by using elec-trospinning technique and hydrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms were carried out by a Sieverts appa-ratus at room temperature. The SEM analysis of the nanofibers revealed that the deformation of the nano-fiber increases with increasing SWNT concentration. The diameter of neat nanofibers was below 200 nm and had smooth surface. The surface of the composite nanofibers was rough even by adding low quantity of SWNT. The hydrogen storage results showed an improvement in the adsorption capacity with increasing the SWNT content in composite nanofibers. These nanofibers were evacuated again to remove the ad-sorbed hydrogen at room temperature. Moreover, even though specific surface area and total pore volume were important factors for increasing the capacity of hydrogen adsorption. Finally, maximum adsorption capacity was 0.29 wt % in case of nanofibers with 10 wt % SWNT under 30 bar at 298 K. Abstract

Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) composite nanofibers (FCNFs) have been fabricated to evaluate the potential of FCNFs as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material in the frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz. The scanning electron microscope and viscosity analyses confirmed the presence of good dispersion Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated within the electrospun nanofibers and showed FCNF morphologies with diameters of 150–500 nm. The magnetic properties and electrical conductivity of FCNFs were found to be dependent on Fe3O4 nanoparticles concentration and showed an increase with increasing Fe3O4 nanoparticles loading. The EMI shielding efficiency of FCNFs increased up to approximately 22 dB. The EMI shielding results for FCNFs showed that absorption was the major shielding mechanism and reflection was the secondary shielding mechanism. The present study has shown the possibility of utilizing magnetic FCNFs as EMI shielding/absorption materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) composite nanofibers having varying amounts of MWCNTs were fabricated with an aim to investigate the potential of such nanofibers as an effective light weight electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material in the frequency range of 8.2-12.4 GHz (X-band). The state of dispersion of MWCNTs in PVP matrix was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The TEM and SEM analyses confirmed the presence of individual dispersion MWCNTs encapsulated within the electrospun nanofibers and showed MWCNTs/PVP composite nanofiber morphologies with diameters of 150-600 nm. Moreover, the MWCNTs/PVP composite nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrophotometer. The thermal stability of composite nanofibers studied from thermogravimetric analysis was increased after addition of MWCNTs to PVP matrix. The EMI shielding efficiency of MWCNTs/PVP composite nanofibers increased up to 42 dB. The MWCNTs/PVP composite nanofibers developed in this study have benefits in being light weight and having effective EMI shielding performance and can be best candidates for a broad range of electronic applications.
