Abstract

Evidence on the prevalence and determinants of smoking and smokeless tobacco (SLT), and alcohol consumption between slums and non-slums are quite limited. Using sub-samples from the National Family Health Survey (2015–16), prevalence and determinants of tobacco and alcohol use were estimated in eight Indian megacities (Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Meerut, Mumbai, and Nagpur) by residence and sex using binary logistic regression analyses. Inter-and intra-city differences in both forms of tobacco and alcohol by residence were assessed using interaction effect analysis. Strong intra-urban disparity in tobacco and alcohol use was observed. Both forms of tobacco use were higher among men and women residing in slum areas. Despite alcohol use being higher among men from non-slum areas (33.1%) compared to those from slum areas (27.7%), the likelihood of alcohol use was higher among men residing in slums (OR = 1.37;95%CI:1.06–1.77). Higher odds of SLT use were observed among men and women from slums than in non-slum areas. Both forms of tobacco use were higher in slums from North, East, and West Indian cities, whereas alcohol use was higher among males from East and South Indian cities. Continuous monitoring of tobacco and alcohol use in slums is warranted to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Signposting invisibles: A study of the homeless population in India

Abstract

The overarching goal of this article is to sensitize the insensitive governments, institutions, and civil societies for homeless population in social sphere. Routes into homelessness are complex, multiple and interlinked. The complex triggers consist of biographical, structural and behavioural factors, when combined, increase people’s vulnerability to homelessness. Despite the high economic growth and double digit GDP growth that gives opportunity to celebrate the country’s achievement, the worsening condition of the homeless, underlaid by huge inequality, creates the huge contradiction for such celebrations. The problems and complexity associated with homelessness require several stages of prevention, intervention and system-based response for a solution. Thus, policy response requires the urgent need to move away from discussions on general welfare policies to context-specific policies; otherwise, the aspirations of sustainable development will be castles in the air.

Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this study is to investigates the relationship between domestic violence and use of contraception among married women in rural India. Data: Third round of National Family Health Survey (NFHS-III). Methodology: Cross tabulation as bivariate analysis and Binary Logistic Regression as multivariate analysis has been employed to fulfill the objective. Findings: The result shows that there are several hidden factors. between physical violence and contraception use. Alternate explanatory variables are significantly affected the use of contraception. With physical violence which reflects that there is a relationship between physical violence and socioeconomic status such as education, awareness, empowerment of women and subsequently the use of contraception. Originality/value: The paper throws light on the hidden factors which are obstacle in use of contraception with physical violence. Results of this study have potentially important implications for programs aimed at preventing violence and promoting family planning programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. RECYCLING OF REGENERATED WASTEWATER IN THE PROCESS USING WATER CASCADE ANALYSIS IN PULP AND PAPER MILLS.

Abstract

Process integration using membrane permeate of combined bleach effluent and some amount of raw effluent from a pulp mill section and paper machine section was explored in this study. COD was found to be the critical limiting constraint between COD and AOX when the back water of paper machines and Decker was used with the membrane permeate in a bleaching section. After process integration of some identified sections of the mill, the fresh water demand was reduced up to 28.97% and wastewater generation was also reduced by 30.21%. The use of UF permeate resulted in a 71.43% reduction in effluent flow, a 45.5% reduction in COD load and a 93.5% reduction in AOX load. The use of permeate obtained from UF+NF treatment resulted in a further reduction of 55.6% in effluent flow, 42% in COD load and 79.0% in AOX. After integration with UF permeate treatment, the cost savings is likely to be 45.5% while integration with UF+NF permeate is likely to result in a 62.07% reduction in treatment costs with 41.53% of the cost savings in the form of water cess. Assuming that the average production of the mill is 225 tpd, a savings of Rs 2.68 and Rs. 3.06 in the cost of production per kg of paper can be achieved by employing the proposed process integration scheme. Abstract

Environment is a major issue which confronts industry and business in today’s world on daily basis. Different industrial activities are degrading various environmental components like water, air, soil and plant vegetation. Cement industry is one of the 17 most polluting industries listed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The Jaypee Rewa Cement Cement industry, Rewa, Madhaya Pradesh is located between 24 o 33 ’ North longitude and 81 o 10 ’ east latitude and is situated at Jay Prakash Nagar 20 km from Rewa Town of Madhya Pradesh, India. The Jaypee Rewa Cement industry is the major source of particulate matters, SOx, NOx and CO2, emissions. Cement dust contains heavy metals like nickel, cobalt, lead, chromium, pollutants hazardous to the biotic environment, with impact for vegetation, human and animal health and ecosystems. Present paper attempts to focus on impact of cement emission on plant vegetation.

Abstract

The article discusses a study that proposed a simple direct injection micellar liquid chromatographic procedure to determine disulfiram in illicit preparations as well as in drug and biological samples. It details the successful application of the optimized and validated method to the determination of disulfiram in ayurvedic, herbal, divine ash and other samples. It is suggested that the procedure could be used in quality control, routine analysis and pharmacokinetic studies.
