Highlights Recent developments of advanced electronic and optoelectronic gas sensors are introduced. Sensor array with artificial intelligence algorithms and smart gas sensors in “Internet of Things” paradigm are highlighted. Applications of smart gas sensors in environmental monitoring, medical and healthcare applications, food quality control, and public safety are described.

Abstract In this article, the multidisciplinary team of the Taiwan Academy of Tumor Ablation, who have expertise in treating lung cancer, present their perspectives on percutaneous image‐guided thermal ablation (IGTA) of lung tumors. The modified Delphi technique was applied to reach a consensus on clinical practice guidelines concerning ablation procedures, including a comprehensive literature review, selection of panelists, creation of a rating form and survey, and arrangement of an in‐person meeting where panelists agreed or disagreed on various points. The conclusion was a final rating and written summary of the agreement. The multidisciplinary expert team agreed on 10 recommendations for the use of IGTA in the lungs. These recommendations include terms and definitions, line of treatment planning, modality, facility rooms, patient anesthesia settings, indications, margin determination, post‐ablation image surveillance, qualified centers, and complication ranges. In summary, IGTA is a safe and feasible approach for treating primary and metastatic lung tumors, with a relatively low complication rate. However, decisions regarding the ablation technique should consider each patient's specific tumor characteristics.

In modern war or daily life, blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a growing health concern. Our previous studies demonstrated that inflammation was one of the main features of bTBI, and CD28-activated T cells play a central role in inflammation. However, the mechanism of CD28 in bTBI remains to be elucidated. In this study, traumatic brain injury model induced by chest blast exposure in male mice was established, and the mechanism of CD28 in bTBI was studied by elisa, immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry analysis and western blot. After exposure to chest shock wave, the inflammatory factors IL-4, IL-6 and HMGB1 in serum were increased, and CD3+ T cells, CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subsets in the lung were activated. In addition, chest blast exposure resulted in impaired spatial learning and memory ability, disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and the expression of Tau, p-tau, S100β and choline acetyltransferase were increased. The results indicated that genetic knockdown of CD28 could inhibit inflammatory cell infiltration, as well as the activation of CD3+ T cells, CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subsets in the lung, improve spatial learning and memory ability, and ameliorate BBB disruption and hippocampal neuron damage. Moreover, genetic knockdown of CD28 could reduce the expression of p-PI3K, p-AKT and NF-κB. In conclusion, chest blast exposure could lead to bTBI, and attenuate bTBI via the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB signaling pathway in male mice. This study provides new targets for the prevention and treatment of veterans with bTBI.

Transition metal sulfides have garnered increasing attention for their role in persulfate activation, a crucial process in environmental remediation. However, the function of metal sulfides without reversible valence changes, such as ZnS, remains largely unexplored in this context. Here we report ZnS-embedded porous carbon (ZnS-C), synthesized through the pyrolysis of Zn-MOF-74 and dibenzyl disulfide. ZnS-C demonstrates remarkable activity in activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) across a wide pH range, enabling the efficient mineralization removal of bisphenol A (BPA). Through electrochemical investigation and theoretical simulations of charge density distributions, we unveil that the electron transfer from BPA to PDS mediated by the ZnS-C catalyst governs the reaction. This study, both in theory and experiment, demonstrates metal sulfide as electron pump that enhances electron transfer efficiency in PDS activation. These findings redefine the role of metal sulfide catalysts, shedding new light on their potential for regulating reaction pathways in PDS activation processes.

Abstract The surface-intensified, poleward-flowing Gulf Stream (GS) encounters the equatorward-flowing Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) at 36° N off Cape Hatteras. In this study, daily output from a data-assimilative, high-resolution (800 m), regional ocean reanalysis was examined to quantify variability in the velocity structure of the GS and DWBC during 2017–2018. The validity of this reanalysis was confirmed with independent observations of ocean velocity and density that demonstrate a high level of realism in the model’s representation of the regional circulation. The model’s daily velocity time series across a transect off Cape Hatteras was examined using rotated Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis, and analysis suggests three leading modes that characterize the variability of the western boundary currents throughout the water column. The first mode, related to meandering of the GS current, accounts for 55.3% of the variance, followed by a “wind-forced mode”, which accounts for 12.5% of the variance. The third mode, influenced by the DWBC and upper-ocean eddies, accounts for 7.1% of the variance.

CuEDTA/Zn primary battery is constructed for the first time to realize CuEDTA removal and synchronous power generation.

In-situ photocatalytic H2O2 production has been receiving increasing attention in recent years for sustainable H2O2 synthesis. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is regarded as one of the most promising semiconductor photocatalysts for H2O2 evolution. Introducing N defects in g-C3N4 has been proved to be an effective strategy to enhance photocatalytic activity. However, the photocatalytic mechanism of the N vacancies is ambiguous and different types of N vacancies in g-C3N4 may exhibit different effects on photocatalytic activity. Herein, we develop a facile sodium persulfate eutectic polymerization method to prepare the g-C3N4 with abundant three coordinate nitrogen (N3C) vacancies. This type of nitrogen vacancy has not been studied in g-C3N4 for photocatalytic H2O2 production. Our results show that the introduction of N3C vacancies in the g-C3N4 successfully broadens the light absorption range, and inhibits the photoexcited charge recombination with enhanced O2 adsorption to promote oxygen activation. The photocatalytic H2O2 evolution from the N3C-rich g-C3N4 is 4.5 times higher than that of the pristine g-C3N4. This study demonstrates a novel strategy to introduce N3C vacancies in g-C3N4, which offers a new method to develop active catalysts for photocatalytic H2O2 evolution.

Luminophores based on clustering-triggered emission have drawn emerging attention in recent years but they tend to be nonluminescent in dilute solution. Here, the authors design novel clusteroluminogens through modification of cyclodextrin (CD) with amino acids to enable clusterization of chromophores in CD-based confined space and realize blue to cyan fluorescence even in the dilute solution.

Abstract Because of stem cells are limited by the low efficiency of their cell homing and survival in vivo, cell delivery systems and scaffolds have attracted a great deal of attention for stem cells’ successful clinical practice. β-chitin nanofibers (β-ChNF) were prepared from squid pens in this study. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy proved that β-ChNFs with the diameter of 5 to 10 nm were prepared. β-ChNF dispersion became gelled upon the addition of cell culture medium. Cell culture experiments showed that β-ChNFs exhibited negligible cytotoxicity towards ADSCs and L929 cells, and it was found that more exosomes were secreted by the globular ADSCs grown in the β-ChNF hydrogel. The vivo experiments of rats showed that the ADSCs-loaded β-ChNF hydrogel could directly cover the wound surface and significantly accelerate the wound healing and promote the generation of epithelization, granulation tissue and collagen. In addition, the ADSCs-loaded β-ChNF hydrogel clearly regulated the expressions of VEGFR, α-SMA, collagen I and collagen III. Finally, we showed that ADSCs-loaded β-ChNF hydrogel activated the TGFβ/smad signaling. The neutralization of TGFβ markedly reduced Smad phosphorylation and the expressions of TIMP1, VEGFR and α-SMA. Taken together, these findings suggest that ADSCs-loaded β-ChNF hydrogel promises for treating wounds that are challenge to heal via conventional methods. Graphical abstract

Abstract Heavy metal ions are highly toxic for living organisms especially after bioaccumulation and biomagnification, which possess a serious threat to human health and ecological environment. The rapid, portable, and efficient analytical methods are urgently needed for the determination of heavy metals in different media. Due to the unique advantages of field‐effect transistor (FET) sensors including fast response, easy manipulation, small size, and high sensitivity, FET sensor has become a novel strategy for heavy metal ion monitoring and numerous attempts have been made for the analysis of various heavy metal ions (e.g., mercury, lead, arsenic, copper, cadmium, iron, and silver) in the past decade. Thus, it is of urgent need to systematically summarize recent advances of FET sensing strategies in fast and highly efficient detection of heavy metal ions. In this review, the representative FET sensing platforms for heavy metal ions are introduced with a focus on their working principle and sensing performance. Moreover, the limitations of current FET sensors as well as the gap between the research achievements and practical application requirements are also discussed. At last, future directions of FET sensors in heavy metal ion analysis are proposed, which provides guidance to the further development of FET sensors for monitoring heavy metal ions as well as other chemicals.

In recent years a renewed interest in developing iron electrode for iron based accumulators has risen, govern by the progress in nano-materials research that could bring iron based accumulators nearer to their theoretical energy density and capacity. In this aspect, Iron-Air battery chemistry is best suited for current energy crisis in combination with the cost effectiveness, eco-friendliness, recyclability, non-toxicity of the iron materials. The possibility of Iron-Air battery to function as a rechargeable battery makes this electrochemical systems for engaging development. However, some challenges related to the performance of iron electrode needs to be addressed such as the passivation of the iron electrode on discharge due to the accumulation of iron hydroxide and the low efficiency due to the parasitic hydrogen evolution that occurs during the charging. So the proper engineering and the formulation of iron electrodes are necessary to attain the maximum efficiency for Iron-Air battery. In this exertion, different Fe2O3/Carbon (Fe/C) composites are tested as electrodes for Iron air battery. In addition to this, the prepared materials were comprehensively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical effectiveness of the prepared samples were tested in a three electrode configuration.Fe2O3/MWCNT electrode show the best electrochemical performance exhibits a specific capacity of about 350 mAhg−1 at 10 mA cm−2 compared to the Fe2O3/Graphene of 300 mAhg−1, Fe2O3/Acetylene black of 225 mAhg−1 and Fe2O3/Vulcan carbon of 180 mAhg−1.

Abstract Field-effect transistors (FETs) present highly sensitive, rapid, and in situ detection capability in chemical and biological analysis. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) attract significant attention as FET channel due to their unique structures and outstanding properties. With the booming of studies on TMDC FETs, we aim to give a timely review on TMDC-based FET sensors for environmental analysis in different media. First, theoretical basics on TMDC and FET sensor are introduced. Then, recent advances of TMDC FET sensor for pollutant detection in gaseous and aqueous media are, respectively, discussed. At last, future perspectives and challenges in practical application and commercialization are given for TMDC FET sensors. This article provides an overview on TMDC sensors for a wide variety of analytes with an emphasize on the increasing demand of advanced sensing technologies in environmental analysis.

During these years, the 3D node coverage of heterogeneous wireless sensor networks that are closer to the actual application environment has become a strong focus of research. However, the direct application of traditional two-dimensional planar coverage methods to three-dimensional space suffers from high application complexity, a low coverage rate, and a short life cycle. Most methods ignore the network life cycle when considering coverage. The network coverage and life cycle determine the quality of service (QoS) in heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. Thus, energy-efficient coverage enhancement is a significantly pivotal and challenging task. To solve the above task, an energy-efficient coverage enhancement method, VKECE-3D, based on 3D-Voronoi partitioning and the K-means algorithm is proposed. The quantity of active nodes is kept to a minimum while guaranteeing coverage. Firstly, based on node deployment at random, the nodes are deployed twice using a highly destructive polynomial mutation strategy to improve the uniformity of the nodes. Secondly, the optimal perceptual radius is calculated using the K-means algorithm and 3D-Voronoi partitioning to enhance the network coverage quality. Finally, a multi-hop communication and polling working mechanism are proposed to lower the nodes’ energy consumption and lengthen the network’s lifetime. Its simulation findings demonstrate that compared to other energy-efficient coverage enhancement solutions, VKECE-3D improves network coverage and greatly lengthens the network’s lifetime.

Recurrent chest blast exposure can lead to brain inflammation, oxidative stress, and mental disorders in soldiers. However, the mechanism that underlies brain injury caused indirectly by chest blasts remains unclear. It is urgent to find additional reliable biomarkers to reveal the intimate details of the pathogenesis of this phenomenon. We used the term tandem mass tag (TMT) labeling combined with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to screen for differentially expressed proteins in rat brain at different time points after a chest blast. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with the identifier PXD025204. Gene Ontology (GO), the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID), and Cytoscape analyses were used to analyze the proteomic profiles of blast-exposed rats. In addition, we performed Western blotting to verify protein levels. We identified 6,931 proteins, of which 255 were differentially expressed and 43, 84, 52, 97, and 49 were identified in brain tissues at 12, 24, 48, and 72 h and 1 week after chest blast exposure, respectively. In this study, the GO, KEGG, Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins, and Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) analyses indicated that brain damage caused by chest blast exposure involved many important biological processes and signaling pathways, such as inflammation, cell adhesion, phagocytosis, neuronal and synaptic damage, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Furthermore, Western blotting confirmed that these differentially expressed proteins and affected signaling pathways were associated with brain damage caused by chest blast exposure. This study identifies potential protein biomarkers of brain damage caused indirectly by chest blast and new targets for the treatment of this condition.

Abstract Increasing demand for timely and accurate environmental pollution monitoring and control requires new sensing techniques with outstanding performance, i.e., high sensitivity, high selectivity, and reliability. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), also known as porous coordination polymers, are a fascinating class of highly ordered crystalline coordination polymers formed by the coordination of metal ions/clusters and organic bridging linkers/ligands. Owing to their unique structures and properties, i.e., high surface area, tailorable pore size, high density of active sites, and high catalytic activity, various MOF-based sensing platforms have been reported for environmental contaminant detection including anions, heavy metal ions, organic compounds, and gases. In this review, recent progress in MOF-based environmental sensors is introduced with a focus on optical, electrochemical, and field-effect transistor sensors. The sensors have shown unique and promising performance in water and gas contaminant sensing. Moreover, by incorporation with other functional materials, MOF-based composites can greatly improve the sensor performance. The current limitations and future directions of MOF-based sensors are also discussed.

Field-effect transistor (FET) sensors based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for detecting chemical species provide a number of distinct advantages, such as ultra-sensitivity, label-free, and real-time response. However, without a passivation layer, channel materials directly exposed to an ionic solution could generate multiple signals from ionic conduction through the solution droplet, doping effect, and gating effect. Therefore, a method that provides a passivation layer on the surface of rGO without degrading device performance will significantly improve device sensitivity, in which the conductivity changes solely with the gating effect. In this work, we report rGO FET sensor devices with Hg2+-dependent DNA as a probe and the use of an Al2O3 layer to separate analytes from conducting channel materials. The device shows good electronic stability, excellent lower detection limit (1 nM), and high sensitivity for real-time detection of Hg2+ in an underwater environment. Our work shows that optimization of an rGO FET structure can provide significant performance enhancement and profound fundamental understanding for the sensor mechanism. Halophytes are remarkable plants that can tolerate extremely high-salinity conditions, and have different salinity tolerance mechanisms from those of glycophytic plants. In this work, we investigated the mechanisms of salinity tolerance of an extreme halophyte, Kochia sieversiana (Pall.) C. A. M, using RNA sequencing and physiological tests. The results showed that moderate salinity stimulated the growth and water uptake of K. sieversiana and, even under 480-mM salinity condition, K. sieversiana maintained an extremely high water content. This high water content may be a specific adaptive strategy of K. sieversiana to high salinity. The physiological analysis indicated that increasing succulence and great accumulations of sodium, alanine, sucrose, and maltose may be favorable to the water uptake and osmotic regulation of K. sieversiana under high-salinity stress. Transcriptome data indicated that some aquaporin genes and potassium (K+) transporter genes may be important for water uptake and ion balance, respectively, while different members of those gene families were employed under low- and high-salinity stresses. In addition, several aquaporin genes were up-regulated in low- but not high-salinity stressed roots. The highly expressed aquaporin genes may allow low-salinity stressed K. sieversiana plants to uptake more water than control plants. The leaf K+/root K+ ratio was enhanced under low- but not high-salinity stress, which suggested that low salinity might promote K+ transport from the roots to the shoots. Hence, we speculated that low salinity might allow K. sieversiana to uptake more water and transport more K+ from roots to shoots, increasing the growth rate of K. sieversiana.

Simple Summary: Following technological advancements, there has been a rise in the early detection of pulmonary nodules, with more patients found to have multiple lesions. These lesions may indicate benign or malignant stages, each requiring careful evaluation and management. Multiple treatment strategies can be followed while ensuring patient comfort and minimizing complications. Thus, our study aims to provide an example of single-stage management for multiple lung lesions, using percutaneous ablation and thoracoscopic resection in a hybrid operating room (HOR). These combined procedures in a single stage and setting allows for a minimally invasive experience for patients, with minimal complications and a shorter operation time. In addition to personalized therapy, there is more flexibility for managing complications in the HOR. Thus, these initial results indicate a feasible and safe single-stage workflow and an alternative way to manage multiple pulmonary lesions in patients. Background: Different approaches are required in treating patients with multiple pulmonary lesions. A multistage procedure may increase the risk of complications and patient discomfort. This study reports an initial experience with single-stage management of multiple lung lesions using percutaneous ablation with thoracoscopic resection in a hybrid operating room (HOR). Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent combined ablation and resection in an HOR between May 2022 and July 2024. All patients received a single anesthesia via endotracheal tube intubation. The clinical data, operative findings, and pathological characteristics of the lung nodules were recorded. Results: A total of 22 patients were enrolled in this study. Twenty patients underwent unilateral procedures, while the other two patients underwent bilateral procedures. Ablations were performed before lung resection in 21 patients; only 1 patient underwent surgery first. The median global operating room time was 227.0 min. The median total radiation dose (dose area product) was 14,076 μGym2. The median hospital postoperative length of stay was 2 days. Conclusions: The single-stage procedure of percutaneous ablation with thoracoscopic resection under general anesthesia in an HOR is feasible and safe. Sleeve and double‐sleeve lobectomies are lung‐sparing techniques for treating central lung cancers. However, if the tumour extends to involve the bronchi and vessels, lung auto‐transplantation may be an alternative to pneumonectomy. Neoadjuvant therapy after surgery is the most common strategy for patients with extensive central lung cancer. Herein, we report a case of central lung cancer in a patient who underwent immunochemotherapy as neoadjuvant therapy following lung auto‐transplantation. A 68‐year‐old man with stage IIIA non‐small cell lung cancer and left upper lobe squamous cell carcinoma underwent neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy. Following partial regression, a multidisciplinary team decided on a back‐table procedure with auto‐lung transplantation after pneumonectomy to preserve pulmonary function. The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged after three weeks with no residual tumour or lymph node metastases. Lung auto‐transplantation can be successfully performed in non‐lung transplantation centres, potentially broadening treatment options for patients with central lung cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
