The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex and dynamic three-dimensional network that functions as an architectural scaffold to maintain cardiac homeostasis. Important biochemical and mechanical signals associated with cell‒cell communication are provided via the reciprocal interaction between cells and the ECM. By converting mechanical cues into biochemical signals, the ECM regulates many cell processes, including migration, adhesion, growth, differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Moreover, the ECM facilitates the replacement of dead cells and preserves the structural integrity of the heart, making it essential in conditions such as myocardial infarction and other pathological states. When excessive ECM deposition or abnormal production of ECM components occurs, the heart undergoes fibrosis, leading to cardiac dysfunction and heart failure. However, emerging evidence suggests that the ECM may contribute to heart regeneration following cardiac injury. The present review offers a complete overview of the existing information and novel discoveries regarding the involvement of the ECM in heart regeneration from both mechanical and biochemical perspectives. Understanding the ECM and its involvement in mechanotransduction holds significant potential for advancing therapeutic approaches in heart repair and regeneration.

Methods A literature search was conducted in the Web of Science core collection for articles related to ischemic stroke and sleep published between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2023. The bibliometrix package in RStudio and VOSviewer software were utilized to analyze and visualize the number of published studies, contributing countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, citations, keywords, and research hotspots in this field. Results A total of 798 articles were retrieved. An analysis of corresponding authors revealed that China ranked first globally with 199 publications and established collaborations with multiple countries. The United States followed closely with 196 publications. The University of Toronto (Canada) was the leading institution with 34 publications. Among the top ten authors, five were from the University of Michigan (US), and they had close cooperation with each other. American scholar Devin L Brown published 28 articles and was cited 236 times, ranking first in the number of articles published and the frequency of citations. Sleep Medicine published the most articles on ischemic stroke and sleep (74 articles), while Stroke had the highest citation frequency (3542 times). Through the visual analysis of keywords, it was found that stroke and sleep apnea had the highest occurrence frequency. In the research field of the correlation between stroke and sleep, the analysis of research themes suggests that insomnia and depression are fundamental topics crucial to the development of this field. Stroke prevention, functional outcomes, and cerebral blood flow are potential themes that require further exploration. Conclusions An increasing number of studies have focused on the correlation between ischemic stroke and sleep. China and the United States have published more literature in this field, and sleep-disordered breathing is the major research hotspot. Future research in the field of stroke and sleep should explore themes such as insomnia, depression, stroke prevention, functional outcomes, and cerebral blood flow.

Abstract To investigate the effect mechanism of electroacupuncture based on the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) /acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) signaling pathway to improve glycolipid metabolism disorders in db/db mice. 10 db/m mice with normal genotype were used as the normal control group without diabetes (Con), and 30 db/db mice were divided randomly into three groups: Pathological model mice (Mod), Acupuncture + ACC antagonist group (Acu + ACC), and Acupuncture + AMPK antagonist group (Acu + AMPK). Con and Mod did not receive any special treatment, only as a control observation. The latter two groups of mice received electroacupuncture treatment for 4 weeks. Mouse triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), and cholesterin(CHO) levels were detected by colorimetric assay. Enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) was used to detect insulin(INS) levels. Liver histopathologic changes and hepatic glycogen synthesis were observed by HE and PAS staining. Backgrounde-Cigarette (electronic cigarette) use has been a public health issue in the United States. On June 23, 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued marketing denial orders (MDOs) to Juul Labs Inc for all their products currently marketed in the United States. However, one day later, on June 24, 2022, a federal appeals court granted a temporary reprieve to Juul Labs that allowed it to keep its e-cigarettes on the market. As the conversation around Juul continues to evolve, it is crucial to gain insights into the sentiments and opinions expressed by individuals on social media. ObjectiveThis study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of tweets before and after the ban on Juul, aiming to shed light on public perceptions and sentiments surrounding this contentious topic and to better understand the life cycle of public health–related policy on social media. MethodsNatural language processing (NLP) techniques were used, including state-of-the-art BERTopic topic modeling and sentiment analysis. A total of 6023 tweets and 22,288 replies or retweets were collected from Twitter (rebranded as X in 2023) between June 2022 and October 2022. The encoded topics were used in time-trend analysis to depict the boom-and-bust cycle. Content analyses of retweets were also performed to better understand public perceptions and sentiments about this contentious topic. ResultsThe attention surrounding the FDA’s ban on Juul lasted no longer than a week on Twitter. Not only the news (ie, tweets with a YouTube link that directs to the news site) related to the announcement itself, but the surrounding discussions (eg, potential consequences of this ban or block and concerns toward kids or youth health) diminished shortly after June 23, 2022, the date when the ban was officially announced. Although a short rebound was observed on July 4, 2022, which was contributed by the suspension on the following day, discussions dried out in 2 days. Out of the top 50 most retweeted tweets, we observed that, except for neutral (23/45, 51%) sentiment that broadcasted the announcement, posters responded more negatively (19/45, 42%) to the FDA’s ban. ConclusionsWe observed a short life cycle for this news announcement, with a preponderance of negative sentiment toward the FDA’s ban on Juul. Policy makers could use tactics such as issuing ongoing updates and reminders about the ban, highlighting its impact on public health, and actively engaging with influential social media users who can help maintain the conversation.

Abstract Management of patients with acute chest pain poses a significant challenge in identifying those requiring urgent coronary reperfusion. Electrocardiogram (ECG) constitutes the cornerstone in making prompt clinical decisions by identifying ST‐segment elevation, commonly associated with ST‐segment elevation myocardial infarction. It is important to note that ST‐segment elevation can also be a manifestation of various cardiac and non‐cardiac conditions, from acute myocarditis, early repolarization syndrome, acute pericarditis, and left bundle branch block to unknown origins. The similarity of ECG changes among these conditions complicates clinical differential diagnosis, necessitating a detailed medical history and thorough examinations. Here, we presented a case of a 52‐year‐old female with chest pain and unidentified convex ST‐segment elevation. Considering the negative emergent coronary angiography results, normal echocardiography, and long‐lasting ST‐segment elevation for the following 1 year, the final diagnosis was non‐myocardial infarction, probably related to a prior cerebral haemorrhage.

Abstract Due to the limitations of single-model tumor therapeutic strategies, multimodal combination therapy have become a more favorable option to enhance efficacy by compensating for its deficiencies. However, in nanomaterial-based multimodal therapeutics for tumors, exploiting synergistic interactions and cascade relationships of materials to achieve more effective treatments is still a great challenge. Based on this, we constructed a nanoplatform with a “triple-linkage” effect by cleverly integrating polydopamine (PDA), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and glucose oxidase (GOx) to realize enhanced photothermal therapy (PTT) and activatable metal ion therapy (MIT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. First, the non-radiative conversion of PDA under light conditions was enhanced by AgNPs, which directly enhanced the photothermal conversion efficiency of PDA. In addition, GOx reduced the synthesis of cellular heat shock proteins by interfering with cellular energy metabolism, thereby enhancing cellular sensitivity to PTT. On the other hand, H2O2, a by-product of GOx-catalyzed glucose, could be used as an activation source to activate non-toxic AgNPs to release cytotoxic Ag+, achieving activatable Ag+-mediated MIT. In conclusion, this nanosystem achieved efficient PTT and MIT for HCC by exploiting the cascade effect among PDA, AgNPs, and GOx, providing a novel idea for the design of multimodal tumor therapeutic systems with cascade regulation. In this work, we introduce the theoretical framework of the phonon-mediated Migdal effect for neutrino-nucleus scattering in semiconductors, considering both the Standard Model and the presence of the neutrino magnetic moment. We calculate the rate of electron excitation resulting from the Migdal effect and observe a substantial coherent enhancement compared to ordinary neutrino-electron scattering. Furthermore, we provide numerical sensitivities for detecting the Migdal effect and constraints on the neutrino magnetic moment, utilizing an experimental setup with reactor neutrinos.

PurposeTo comprehensively compare the long-term outcome of the combined topography guided photorefractive keratectomy (TG-PRK) with accelerated corneal cross-linking (ACXL) and ACXL alone in eyes with progressive keratoconus. The analysis focused on the changes in the detailed corneal aberrometric values.MethodsThis single-center, prospective cohort study included 28 patients (30 eyes) of the TG-PRK plus ACXL group and 14 patients (15 eyes) of the ACXL alone group. The mean duration of the follow-up was 44 ± 10.18 months (ranged from 31 to 65 months). The preoperative data and the postoperative measurement data at the last follow-up visit, including demographic data, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction, corneal topography, pachymetry, aberrometry and densitometry were analyzed.ResultsThe CDVA significantly improved in the TG-PRK plus ACXL group at the last follow-up visit (p = 0.006), while no significant improvement was found in the ACXL alone group (p = 0.432). Objective: To examine dose-response associations between use of specific social media sites and the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and traditional cigarettes. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 298 first-year college students enrolled in the fall 2019 semester at a large state university. Heckman selection and Probit model were used to estimate associations between use of specific social media sites and e-cigarette/traditional cigarette use. Results: Each additional hour per day spent on Snapchat was associated with a 4.61% increase in the probability of lifetime e-cigarette use. In addition, among current e-cigarette users, more time spent on Snapchat was associated with more frequent e-cigarette use (marginal effects: 0.13, p = 0.001). Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram were not associated with traditional cigarette smoking. Conclusion: Snapchat was the only major social media platform associated with both lifetime and current e-cigarette use.

In recent years, Chinese college graduates have faced a challenging employment situation, calling for an analysis of the social stratification function of higher education. This paper used linear regression to analyze factors influencing the occupational status attainment of college graduates. The social stratification function of higher education was found to be significant. Educational factors were essential for occupational status attainment. Nevertheless, new graduates' occupational status could also be affected by individual and family factors. On the whole, college graduates achieved stratum promotion. Men had higher occupational status and longer mobility distance than women, and rural graduates had higher occupational status and longer mobility distance than urban graduates.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Usights UC100 illuminated microcatheter in microcatheter-assisted trabeculotomy (MAT). METHODS: Totally 10 eyes of 10 patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) who underwent MAT facilitated by Usights UC100 (5 eyes) or iTrack (5 eyes) were reviewed. The success of this surgery was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) 30% reduction, without oral glaucoma medications, or additional glaucoma surgery. RESULTS: The mean pre-operative IOP was 25.38±10.22 mm Hg in the Usights UC100 group and 19.98±3.87 mm Hg in the iTrack group. MAT was achieved in all eyes in both groups. The success rates for the Usights UC100 group and iTrack groups were in all and 4 eyes, respectively. Both microcatheters produced a statistically significant reduction in IOP, and eyes using Usights UC100 achieved a lower IOP than the iTrack group at 3mo follow-up (12.58±1.52 and 14.84±1.89 mm Hg, respectively), but no statistical significance was there. No severe side effects were observed in either group. CONCLUSION: MAT using Usights UC100 or iTrack both achieve significant pressure reduction in cases of POAG, and Usights UC100 is as safe as iTrack.

Abstract Background Previous studies have shown an association between gut microbiota and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the underlying causal relationship remains unclear. This study aims to elucidate the causal relationship between gut microbiota and CVDs and to explore the pathogenic role of gut microbiota in CVDs. Methods In this two-sample Mendelian randomization study, we used genetic instruments from publicly available genome-wide association studies, including single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with gut microbiota (n = 14,306) and CVDs (n = 2,207,591). We employed multiple statistical analysis methods, including inverse variance weighting, MR Egger, weighted median, MR pleiotropic residuals and outliers, and the leave-one-out method, to estimate the causal relationship between gut microbiota and CVDs. Additionally, we conducted multiple analyses to assess horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity. Results GWAS summary data were available from a pooled sample of 2,221,897 adult and adolescent participants. Our findings indicated that specific gut microbiota had either protective or detrimental effects on CVDs. Notably, Howardella (OR = 0.955, 95% CI: 0.913–0.999, P = .05), Intestinibacter (OR = 0.908, 95% CI:0.831–0.993, P = .03), Lachnospiraceae (NK4A136 group) (OR = 0.904, 95% CI:0.841–0.973, P = .007), Turicibacter (OR = 0.904, 95% CI: 0.838–0.976, P = .01), Holdemania (OR, 0.898; 95% CI: 0.810–0.995, P = .04) and Odoribacter (OR, 0.835; 95% CI: 0.710–0.993, P = .04) exhibited a protective causal effect on atrial fibrillation, while other microbiota had adverse causal effects. Similar effects were observed with respect to coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and hypertension. Furthermore, reversed Mendelian randomization analyses revealed that atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke had causal effects on certain gut microbiotas. Conclusion Our study underscored the importance of gut microbiota in the context of CVDs and lent support to the hypothesis that increasing the abundance of probiotics or decreasing the abundance of harmful bacterial populations may offer protection against specific CVDs. Nevertheless, further research is essential to translate these findings into clinical practice.

Abstract The overall picture of degloving skin and soft tissue injuries (DSTI) remains a blank space in China. Therefore, a retrospective study was designed to summarize the current situation of this injury. Patients diagnosed with DSTI hospitalized between 2013 and 2018 were identified from the Hospital Quality Monitoring System (HQMS) database, of whom demographics, injury characteristics, hospitalization and cost information were analyzed. A total of 62,709 patients were enrolled in this study. Male sex predominated, with a mean age of 43.01 ± 19.70 years. Peasants seemed to be the most vulnerable. East China and Hubei province had the most patients. The most and least frequently injured anatomic site were lower extremity and torso, respectively. Traffic-related accidents and summer accounted for the highest proportion in terms of injury mechanism and season. The operation rate of DSTI roughly showed a growing trend, and the average length of stay was 22.02 ± 29.73 days. At discharge, 0.93% of DSTI patients ended up in death. Medicine accounted mostly for hospitalization cost, while the proportion decreased year by year. More than half DSTI patients paid at their own charge. This study made a relatively detailed description of DSTI patients nationwide, and might provide enlightenments for better prevention and treatment.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a brain injury condition that poses a significant risk to newborns, potentially causing varying degrees of damage to the central nervous system. Its clinical manifestations include respiratory distress, cardiac dysfunction, hypotension, muscle weakness, seizures, and coma. As HIE represents a progressive brain injury, early identification of the extent of the damage and the implementation of appropriate treatment are crucial for reducing mortality and improving outcomes. HIE patients may face long-term complications such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, vision loss, and developmental delays. Therefore, prompt identification and treatment of hypoxic-ischemic symptoms can help reduce the risk of severe sequelae in patients. Currently, hypothermia therapy is one of the most effective treatments for HIE patients. However, not all newborns with HIE are suitable for this therapy, making rapid and accurate assessment of the extent of brain injury critical for treatment. Among HIE patients, hypothermia therapy has shown better efficacy in those diagnosed with moderate to severe HIE within 6 h of birth, establishing this time frame as the golden period for treatment. During this golden period, an accurate assessment of HIE severity is essential for formulating appropriate treatment strategies and predicting long-term outcomes for the affected infants. This study proposes a method for addressing data imbalance and noise interference through data preprocessing techniques, including filtering and SMOTE. It then employs EEGNet, a deep learning model specifically designed for EEG classification, combined with a Transformer model featuring an attention mechanism that excels at capturing long-term sequential features to construct the Trans-EEGNet model. This model outperforms previous methods in computation time and feature extraction, enabling rapid classification and assessment of HIE severity in newborns.

Weeds significantly impact paddy yields, and herbicides offer a cost-effective, rapid, and efficient solution compared to manual weeding, ensuring agricultural productivity. Tripyrasulfone, a novel 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor developed by Qingdao Kingagroot Chemicals Co., Ltd., has demonstrated high efficacy when applied post-emergence, causing characteristic foliar bleaching in susceptible weed species, distinct from conventional acetolactate synthase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and synthetic auxin herbicides. This study investigates the impact of tripyrasulfone on the activity of key soil enzymes (urease (UE), acid phosphatase (ACP), sucrase (SC), catalase (CAT), and dehydrogenase (DHA)) in paddy soils from Jilin Province and Shandong Province. Different doses of tripyrasulfone (0.1, 1.0, and 2.5 mg kg−1) were applied, and the enzymatic activities were measured. Results indicated that tripyrasulfone initially inhibited UE and ACP activities before activating them. On the 20th day after treatment, UE activity had returned to control levels, whereas ACP activity remained significantly higher, showing long-lasting activation. SC and CAT activities were inhibited but gradually recovered to control levels. Furthermore, DHA activity was activated with a sustained effect, remaining significantly higher than the control group even 20 days after treatment. Overall, the impact of tripyrasulfone on soil enzyme activities diminished over time, suggesting that tripyrasulfone posed minimal long-term ecological risk to soil health.

Abstract The theoretical framework of the neutrino electron excitation at low energies including the screening effect in semiconductor detectors is developed for the first time, both in the Standard Model of particle physics and in the presence of the neutrino magnetic moment. We apply the framework of the non-relativistic effective theory on the neutrino electron scattering and explore the contribution of the screening effect of semiconductors to the neutrino electron excitation based on the linear response theory. We calculate the corresponding numerical results with the popular silicon and germanium targets and show that excitation rates from the neutrino magnetic moment are dramatically enhanced by the screening effect and the sensitivity can be significantly improved to the level of 10 −13 μ B, much better than the current best limits from the laboratory and astrophysical probes.

Breast cancer is a prominent contributor to mortality associated with cancer in the female population on a global scale. The timely identification and precise categorization of breast cancer are of utmost importance in enhancing patient prognosis. Nevertheless, the task of precisely categorizing breast cancer based on ultrasound imaging continues to present difficulties, primarily due to the presence of dense breast tissues and their inherent heterogeneity. This study presents a unique approach for breast cancer categorization utilizing the wavelet based vision transformer network. To enhance the neural network’s receptive fields, we have incorporated the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) into the network input. This technique enables the capture of significant features in the frequency domain. The proposed model exhibits the capability to effectively capture intricate characteristics of breast tissue, hence enabling correct classification of breast cancer with a notable degree of precision and efficiency. We utilized two breast tumor ultrasound datasets, including 780 cases from Baheya hospital in Egypt and 267 patients from the UDIAT Diagnostic Centre of Sabadell in Spain. The findings of our study indicate that the proposed transformer network achieves exceptional performance in breast cancer classification. With an AUC rate of 0.984 and 0.968 on both datasets, our approach surpasses conventional deep learning techniques, establishing itself as the leading method in this domain. This study signifies a noteworthy advancement in the diagnosis and categorization of breast cancer, showcasing the potential of the proposed transformer networks to enhance the efficacy of medical imaging analysis.

Abstract Objective Non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a deadly form of cancer that exhibits extensive intercellular communication which contributed to chemoradiotherapy resistance. Recent evidence suggests that arrange of key proteins are involved in lung cancer progression, including gap junction proteins (GJPs). Methods and Results In this study, we examined the expression patterns of GJPs in NSCLC, uncovering that both gap junction protein, beta 2 (GJB2) and gap junction protein, beta 2 (GJB3) are increased in LUAD and LUSC. We observed a correlation between the upregulation of GJB2, GJB3 in clinical samples and a worse prognosis in patients with NSCLC. By examining the mechanics, we additionally discovered that nuclear factor erythroid‐2‐related factor 1 (NFE2L1) had the capability to enhance the expression of connexin26 and connexin 31 in the NSCLC cell line A549. In addition, the use of metformin was discovered to cause significant downregulation of gap junction protein, betas (GJBs) by limiting the presence of NFE2L1 in the cytoplasm.
