Abstract Background Perioperative management and cardiac surgery in pregnant women with anti-phospholipid syndrome combined with heart valve disease have been rarely reported. Case presentation We describe a case of transcatheter mitral valve-in-valve replacement in a pregnant woman with bioprosthetic valve failure and anti-phospholipid syndrome at 18 weeks’ gestation. The patient underwent a cesarean section delivery at 34 weeks of gestation, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby. Conclusions Transapical mitral valve-in-valve surgery resulted in safe maternal and infant outcomes in a pregnant woman with anti-phospholipid syndrome combined with mitral bioprosthetic valve failure. The success of this procedure underscored the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork.

In order to analyze the force behaviour of reinforced concrete frames under actual fire conditions, the gas temperature around the members was accurately calculated using FDS fire dynamics software to simulate a typical fire scenario. Subsequently, both the fire-affected and non-fire-affected frames were modeled using ABAQUS finite element analysis software with a multi-scale modelling approach. The method employs solid elements to simulate the framework under fire influence and beam elements to simulate the framework under non-fire conditions, achieving a higher precision in reflecting post-fire structural deformations and stress conditions while also considering computational efficiency. The calculation of fire resistance is focused on a single-layer reinforced concrete frame structure, enabling an analysis of beam and column component deformations as well as changes in internal forces under typical fire scenarios. This methodology provides engineering professionals with an effective tool for analyzing overall structural fire resistance in concrete frames. Through comprehensive utilization of these specialized software programs, more accurate evaluations can be made regarding a frame's performance during fires, thereby offering important technical support and references for engineering practice.

Triethylamine (TEA) is a typical volatile organic compound (VOC) widely present in air and water, produced in industrial production activities, with high toxicity and great harm. Fluorescence detection and resistive sensing are effective methods for detecting pollutants. Here, In-doped interpenetrating twin ZIF-8 and its annealed derivatives have been successfully designed and prepared as a multifunctional TEA sensor. On the one hand, ZIF-8-In exhibits excellent fluorescence emission enhancement at 450 nm in a dose-dependent manner to TEA in water within the concentration range of 1–100 ppm, with a detection limit as low as 1 ppm. On the other hand, the annealed ZIF-8-In derivative is ZnO/In2O3 with a porous hierarchical structure, which is a perfect sensitive material for manufacturing gas sensors. Within the concentration range of 1–100 ppm, the ZnO/In2O3 gas sensor has a high response for 100 ppm TEA, reaching 107.7 (Ra/Rg), and can detect TEA gas as low as 1 ppm. Furthermore, the response of ZnO/In2O3 sensors to TEA is at least 10 times that of the other four VOC gases, demonstrating excellent gas selectivity. This multifunctional sensor can adapt to complex detection situations, demonstrating good application prospects.

The early afterglow of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) can provide critical information on the jet and progenitor of the GRB. The extreme brightness of GRB 221009A allows us to probe its early afterglow in unprecedented detail. In this Letter, we report comprehensive observation results of the early afterglow of GRB 221009A (from T _0 +660 s to T _0 +1860 s, where T _0 is the Insight-HXMT/HE trigger time) in X-ray/gamma-ray energy band (from 20 keV to 20 MeV) by Insight-HXMT High Energy X-ray Telescope, GECAM-C, and Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. We find that the spectrum of the early afterglow in 20 keV–20 MeV can be well described by a cutoff power law with an extra power law that dominates the low- and high-energy bands, respectively. The cutoff power law E _peak is ∼30 keV, and the power-law photon index is ∼1.8 throughout the early afterglow phase. By fitting the light curves in different energy bands, we find that a significant achromatic break (from keV to TeV) is required at T _0 + ${1246}_{-26}^{+27}$ s (i.e., 1021 s since the afterglow starting time T _AG = T _0 +225 s), providing compelling evidence of a jet break. Interestingly, both the pre-break and post-break decay slopes vary with energy, and these two slopes become closer in the lower energy band, making the break less identifiable. Intriguingly, the spectrum of the early afterglow experienced a slight hardening before the break and a softening after the break. These results provide new insights into the physics of this remarkable GRB.

Abstract Cross-domain recommendation (CDR) has become an important research direction in the field of recommender systems due to the increasing demand for personalized recommendations across different domains. However, CDR faces multiple challenges, including data sparsity, popularity bias, and long-tail problems. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework that combines graph contrastive embedding and multi-head cross-attention transfer for cross-domain recommendation, called GCE-MCAT. Specifically, in the pre-training process, we generate more uniform user and item embeddings through contrastive learning, effectively solving the problem of inconsistent data embedding space distribution and recommendation popularity bias. Moreover, we propose a multi-head cross-attention transfer mechanism that allows the model to extract user common and specific domain features from multiple perspectives and perform cross-domain bidirectional knowledge transfer. Finally, we propose a cross-domain feature fusion mechanism that dynamically assigns weights to common user features and specific domain features. This enables the model to more effectively learn common user interests. We evaluate the proposed framework on three real-world CDR datasets and show that GCE-MCAT consistently and significantly improves recommendation performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. In particular, the proposed framework has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in addressing long-tail distribution and enhancing recommendation novelty, providing users with more diversified recommendations and reducing popularity bias.

Abstract Background Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) have been shown to exhibit endocrine disrupting properties. Their effects on women’s reproductive health, however, remain elusive. Here, we investigated associations between blood concentrations of Pb, Cd, Hg, and their mixture and infertility and long-term amenorrhea in women aged 20–49 years using the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013–2018 cross-sectional survey. Methods A total of 1,990 women were included for the analysis of infertility and 1,919 women for long-term amenorrhea. The methods of log-transformation and use of quartiles were used to analyze blood heavy metal concentrations. Statistical differences in the covariates between the outcome groups were evaluated using a chi-squared test for categorical variables and a t-test for continuous variables. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the associations. Results The blood concentrations of Pb and heavy metal mixtures were significantly higher in ever-infertile women than pregnant women, but the concentrations of Cd and Hg were comparable. After full adjustment, multiple logistic regression analyses revealed a significant and dose-dependent positive association between blood Pb concentrations and women’s historical infertility, a negative association between Cd and women’s long-term amenorrhea, and no associations between Hg and heavy metal mixture and women’s infertility or long-term amenorrhea. Conclusions Our study suggests that exposure to heavy metals exhibit differential associations with history of infertility and amenorrhea, and Pb may adversely impact women’s reproduction and heighten the risks of infertility and long-term amenorrhea.

Background: Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are compounds with a wide range of industrial and commercial applications and are mainly used as flame retardants and plasticizers. The global consumption of OPFRs has risen rapidly in recent decades, and they have been widely detected in environmental media. Unfortunately, OPFRs have been associated with many adverse health outcomes. The issue of the health risks of OPFRs is attracting increasing attention. Therefore, there is a need to review the current state of research and trends in this field to help researchers and policymakers quickly understand the field, identify new research directions, and allocate appropriate resources for further development of the OPFR health risk research field. Methods: This study statistically analyzed 1162 relevant publications included in the Web of Science Core Collection from 2003–2023. The internal and external features of the literature, such as publication trends, countries, authors, journals, and keywords, were quantitatively analyzed and visually presented to identify the research hotspots, compositions, and paradigms of the field and to horizontally and vertically analyze the development trends and structural evolution of the field. Results: The development of the field can be divided into three stages, and the field entered a period of rapid development in 2016. China (649 papers) is the most prolific country, followed by the United States (188 papers). The authors STAPLETON HM and WANG Y have the highest combined impact. International collaboration between countries and researchers still needs to be strengthened. Science of The Total Environment is the most frequently published journal (162 papers), and Environmental Science and Technology is the most frequently cited journal (5285 citations). Endocrine disruption, developmental toxicity, and neurotoxicity are the health effects of greatest interest. Conclusions: Future research is expected to be multidisciplinary, and research hotspots may involve a comprehensive assessment of OPFR exposure in the population, exploration of the mechanisms of endocrine-disrupting effects and in vivo metabolic processes, and examination of the health effects of OPFR metabolites.

Background: Leaflet augmentation is often required to correct an inadequate leaflet size due to leaflet thickening, contracture and junctional fusion in patients with tricuspid valve regurgitation (TR) after left-side valve surgery (LSVS). However, the ideal material for leaflet augmentation remains controversial. This article aims to compare the medium- and long-term results of tricuspid valve repair with bovine pericardium (BP) and expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) patches for the augmentation of tricuspid leaflets and to compare the durability of the two materials. Methods: From January 2015 to April 2023, a total of 69 patients with severe isolated TR underwent tricuspid valvuloplasty (TVP) by leaflets augmentation with patches in our institute. According to the different types of patches, they were divided into the BP group (n = 44) and the ePTFE group (n = 25). Results: There were 3 perioperative deaths (4.3%), one case was due to low cardiac output syndrome in the BP group, and 2 cases were due to acute respiratory dysfunction syndrome and low cardiac output syndrome in the ePTFE group, respectively. Before discharge, the area of the TR jet on echocardiography decreased from 23.5 ± 9.1 to 4.2 ± 3.4 cm2. One case in each group was found to have increased blood flow velocity at the tricuspid orifice. After discharge, one patient in each group underwent repeat TVP, in the BP group because of shortened chordae and in the ePTFE group because of calcification of the patch. During the entire follow-up period, there were 7 cases of severe TR (10.1%), 5 in the BP group and 2 in the ePTFE group, a total of 5 cases of tricuspid stenosis (7.2%), 4 in the BP group and 1 in the ePTFE group, and a total of 6 deaths (8.7%), 5 in the BP group and 1 in the ePTFE group. Transthoracic ultrasound in a patient with tricuspid stenosis suggests stiff leaflet movement and poor motion. Conclusions: Leaflet patch enlargement can be safely used in tricuspid valve repair, but BP patches carry a risk of reduced flexibility and stiffness of movement, and ePTFE patches carries a risk of calcification.

Using the rotating vector model (RVM) and aiming to constrain the value of the magnetic inclination angle (α), we perform a least-squares fit on the linearly polarized position angles of 125 pulsars from Parkes 64 m archive data at 1400 MHz. Subsequently, a statistical analysis of the normalized Q parameters is carried out. Furthermore, based on the Q-parameter, we provide a further understanding of the geometry of the radio emission region of the pulsar. In this statistical sample, about 1/5 of the sample is clustered at 0, suggesting that this part of the pulsar is viewed from the center of the radiation cone. For the rest of the pulsars, the Q parameters follow a uniform distribution, supporting the conclusion that the interface of the radiation cone is non-elliptical.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasing in both frequency and intensity due to climate change. HABs release the toxin microcystin-LR (MC-LR) which enters cells via organic anion-transporting polypeptides (OATPs). In this study, we sought to assess the ability of MC-LR to accumulate in trophoblasts, potentially disrupting placental functions. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Intracellular accumulation of MC-LR at exposure concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 µM over 6 hrs was evaluated in immortalized JAR placental cytotrophoblasts. Western blotting was used to evaluate protein-bound MC-LR accumulation in JAR cells. The function of OATP transporters in JAR cells was determined by pre-incubating cells with 10µM cyclosporin A, a general OATP inhibitor for 1 hr, and then incubated with 1µM OATP substrate fluorescein for up to 40 min. Fluorescence of fluorescein was measured at Ex/Em: 494nm/515nm by spectrophotometry. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: A concentration-dependent increase of MC-LR bound proteins in JAR cells was observed at 6 hrs with the greatest intracellular accumulation of MC-LR at 10µM. In the transporter experiments, a significant decrease of fluorescein uptake by up to 45% into JAR cells was observed following cyclosporin A inhibition of OATPs. These findings are consistent with the functional expression of OATP transporters in JAR placenta cells. Ongoing studies are evaluating whether the cyclosporin A-mediated inhibition of OATPs also inhibits the uptake of MC-LR. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Although MC-LR is well-known for its hepatotoxic and neurotoxic effects, there is growing interest in examining its potential adverse impacts on female reproductive health, particularly during pregnancy. Active uptake of MC-LR into the placenta could interfere with placental and fetal development.

The milestone discovery of GW170817-GRB 170817A-AT 2017gfo has shown that gravitational waves (GWs) could be produced during the merger of a neutron star–neutron star/black hole and that in electromagnetic (EM) waves, a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a kilonova (KN) are generated in sequence after the merger. Observationally, however, EM properties before the merger phase are still unclear. Here we report a peculiar precursor in a KN-associated long-duration GRB 211211A, providing evidence of the EM before the merger. This precursor lasts ∼0.2 s, and the waiting time between the precursor and the main burst is ∼1 s, comparable to that between GW170817 and GRB 170817A. The spectrum of the precursor could be well fit with a nonthermal cutoff power-law model instead of a blackbody. In particular, a ∼22 Hz quasiperiodic oscillation candidate (∼3 σ ) is detected in the precursor. These temporal and spectral properties indicate that this precursor is probably produced by a catastrophic flare accompanied with magnetoelastic or crustal oscillations of a magnetar in a binary compact merger. The strong magnetic field of the magnetar can also account for the prolonged duration of GRB 211211A. However, it poses a challenge to reconcile the rather short lifetime of a magnetar with the rather long spiraling time of a binary neutron star system only by the GW radiation before the merger.

The major observation of the X-ray burst (XRB) in association with the fast radio burst (FRB) FRB 200428 originating from SGR J1935+2154 on 2020 April 28 substantiates magnetars as one of the origins of FRBs. However, it is still unclear why only a few XRBs in association with FRBs have been observed solely in this magnetar. In this study, we investigate the minimum variation timescales (MVTs) of XRBs from SGR J1550-5418, an active magnetar similar to SGR J1935+2154, and conduct a comprehensive comparison of their MVT properties. Our analysis reveals that the distribution of the MVT for SGR J1550-5418 follows a lognormal Gaussian function with the mean 6.4 ± 0.4 ms. Interestingly, we detect an evolution in the MVTs, i.e., the fitted mean of the MVT distribution in 2008 October is about 3 times larger than that in 2009, indicating potential variations in radiation regions possibly attributed to changes in magnetic field topology. Besides, we do not find a significant correlation between the MVT and either duration or energy. Finally, there is no significant difference between the MVT distributions across different energy ranges for SGR J1550-5418 and SGR J1935+2154, which supports a common physical origin.

In this paper we present a detailed single-pulse and polarization study of PSR J0614+2229 based on the archived data observed on 2019 August 15 (MJD 58710) and 2019 September 12 (MJD 58738) using the ultra−wide-bandwidth low-frequency receiver on the Parkes radio telescope. The single-pulse sequences show that this pulsar switches between two emission states, in which the emission of state A occurs earlier than that of state B in pulse longitude. We found that the variation in relative brightness between the two states varies temporally and both states follow a simple power law very well. Based on the phase-aligned multifrequency profiles, we found that there is a significant difference in the distributions of spectral index across the emission regions of the two states. Furthermore, we obtained the emission height evolution for the two emission states and found that, at a fixed frequency, the emission height of state A is higher than that of state B. What is even more interesting is that the emission heights of both states A and B do not change with frequency. Our results suggest that the mode switching of this pulsar is possibly caused by changes in the emission heights that alter the distributions of spectral index across the emission regions of states A and B, resulting in frequency-dependent behaviors, i.e., intensity and pulse width.

Harmful algal bloom toxin microcystin has been associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progression and hepatocellular carcinoma, though the mechanisms remain unclear. Using an established mouse model of MASLD, we show that the NLRP3–Hsp70–TLR4 axis drives in part the inflammation of the liver lobule that results in the progression of MASLD to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Results showed that mice deficient in NLRP3 exhibited decreased MASH pathology, blocked Hsp70 expression, and co-binding with NLRP3, a crucial protein component of the liver inflammasome. Hsp70, both in the liver lobule and extracellularly released in the liver vasculature, acted as a ligand to TLR4 in the liver, primarily in hepatocytes to activate the NF-κB pathway, ultimately leading to hepatic cell death and necroptosis, a crucial pathology of MASH progression. The above studies show a novel insight into an inflammasome-triggered Hsp70-mediated inflammation that may have broader implications in MASLD pathology. MASLD to MASH progression often requires multiple hits. One of the mediators of progressive MASLD is environmental toxins. In this research report, we show for the first time a novel mechanism where microcystin-LR, an environmental toxin, advances MASLD to MASH by triggering the release of Hsp70 as a DAMP to activate TLR4-induced inflammation in the liver.

The gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A, known as the “brightest of all time,” is the closest energetic burst detected so far, with an energy of E _γ _,iso ∼ 10 ^55 erg. This study aims to assess its compatibility with known GRB energy and luminosity distributions. Our analysis indicates that the energy/luminosity function of GRBs is consistent across various redshift intervals, and that the inclusion of GRB 221009A does not significantly impact the function at low redshifts. Additionally, our evaluation of the best-fitting result of the entire GRB sample suggests that the expected number of GRBs with energy greater than 10 ^55 erg at a low redshift is 0.2, so that the emergence of GRB 221009A is consistent with expected energy/luminosity functions within ∼2 σ Poisson fluctuation error, still adhering to the principles of small number statistics. Furthermore, we find that GRB 221009A and other energetic bursts, defined as E _γ _,iso ≳ 10 ^54 erg, exhibit no significant differences in terms of distributions of T _90 , minimum timescale, Amati relation, E _γ _,iso – E _X,iso relation, L _γ _,iso –Γ _0 relation, E _γ _,iso –Γ _0 relation, L _γ _,iso – E _p,i –Γ _0 relation, and host galaxy properties, compared to normal long GRBs. This suggests that energetic GRBs (including GRB 221009A) and other long GRBs likely have similar progenitor systems and undergo similar energy dissipation and radiation processes. The generation of energetic GRBs may be due to more extreme central engine properties or, more likely, a rarer viewing configuration of a quasi-universal structured jet.

The brightest gamma-ray burst, GRB 221009A, has spurred numerous theoretical investigations, with particular attention paid to the origins of ultrahigh-energy TeV photons during the prompt phase. However, analyzing the mechanism of radiation of photons in the ∼MeV range has been difficult because the high flux causes pileup and saturation effects in most GRB detectors. In this Letter, we present systematic modeling of the time-resolved spectra of the GRB using unsaturated data obtained from the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (precursor) and SATech-01/GECAM-C (main emission and flare). Our approach incorporates the synchrotron radiation model, which assumes an expanding emission region with relativistic speed and a global magnetic field that decays with radius, and successfully fits such a model to the observational data. Our results indicate that the spectra of the burst are fully in accordance with a synchrotron origin from relativistic electrons accelerated at a large emission radius. The lack of thermal emission in the prompt emission spectra supports a Poynting flux–dominated jet composition.

Evolution of accretion disk and corona during outbursts in black hole binary systems is still unclear. Here, the authors show spectral analysis of MAXI J1820+070 and propose a scenario of a dynamical corona to explain the evolution of the reflection fraction observed by Insight-HXMT.

High-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are useful to probe the early Universe, but only a few candidates have been detected so far. Here, we report the optical and near-infrared observations of the afterglow of a relatively high-redshift event GRB 220101A, which was triggered on New Year’s Day of 2022, and therefore referred to as the “New Year’s burst.” With the optical spectra obtained by XL2.16/BFOSC and NOT/ALFOSC, we determine the redshift of the burst to be z = 4.615. We find that the optical afterglow of GRB 220101A is one of the most luminous ever detected. Based on our optical and near-infrared data, and combined with the X-ray observations, we perform a multiband fit with the Python package afterglowpy . The jet opening angle is constrained to ∼3.°4, which is consistent with the jet-break time at ∼0.7 day. We also determine the circumburst density of n _0 = 0.15 cm ^−3 and kinetic energy E _K,iso = 3.5 × 10 ^54 erg. In the prompt phase of the burst, we find a “mirror” feature in the lightcurve from 80 s to 120 s. The physical origin of such a mirror feature is unclear.

As a new member of the Gravitational-wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) after GECAM-A and GECAM-B, GECAM-C (originally called HEBS), which was launched on board the SATech-01 satellite on 2022 July 27, aims to monitor and localize X-ray and gamma-ray transients from ∼6 keV to 6 MeV. GECAM-C utilizes a similar design to GECAM but operates in a more complex orbital environment. In this work, we utilize the secondary particles simultaneously produced by the cosmic-ray events on orbit and recorded by multiple detectors to calibrate the relative timing accuracy between all detectors of GECAM-C. We find the result is 0.1 μ s, which is the highest time resolution among all GRB detectors ever flown and very helpful in timing analyses such as minimum variable timescale and spectral lags, as well as in time delay localization. Besides this, we calibrate the absolute time accuracy using the one-year Crab Pulsar data observed by GECAM-C and Fermi’s Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, as well as GECAM-C and GECAM-B. The results are 2.02 ± 2.26 μ s and 5.82 ± 3.59 μ s, respectively. Finally, we investigate the spectral lag between the different energy bands of the Crab Pulsar observed by GECAM and the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, which is ∼ −0.2 μ s keV ^−1 .

The minimum variation timescale (MVT) of soft gamma-ray repeaters can be an important probe to estimate the emission region in pulsar-like models, as well as the Lorentz factor and radius of the possible relativistic jet in gamma-ray burst (GRB)–like models, thus revealing their progenitors and physical mechanisms. In this work, we systematically study the MVTs of hundreds of X-ray bursts (XRBs) from SGR J1935+2154 observed by Insight-HXMT, GECAM, and Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor from 2014 July to 2022 January through the Bayesian block algorithm. We find that the MVTs peak at ∼2 ms, corresponding to a light-travel time size of about 600 km, which supports the magnetospheric origin in pulsar-like models. The shock radius and the Lorentz factor of the jet are also constrained in GRB-like models. Interestingly, the MVT of the XRB associated with FRB 200428 is ∼70 ms, which is longer than that of most bursts and implies its special radiation mechanism. In addition, the median of MVTs is 7 ms, shorter than the median MVTs of 40 ms and 480 ms for short GRBs or long GRBs, respectively. However, the MVT is independent of duration, similar to GRBs. Finally, we investigate the energy dependence of MVT and suggest that there is a marginal evidence for a power-law relationship like GRBs, but the rate of variation is at least about an order of magnitude smaller. These features may provide an approach to identify bursts with a magnetar origin.

The determination of the absolute and relative position of a spacecraft is critical for its operation, observations, data analysis, scientific studies, as well as deep-space exploration in general. A spacecraft that can determine its own absolute position autonomously may perform better than those that must rely on transmission solutions. In this work, we report an absolute navigation accuracy of ∼20 km using 16 day Crab pulsar data observed with Fermi’s Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). In addition, we propose a new method with the inverse process of the triangulation for joint navigation using repeated bursts like those from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 observed by the Gravitational-wave High-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor and GBM.

Early optical observations of gamma-ray bursts can significantly contribute to the study of the central engine and physical processes therein. However, of the thousands observed so far, only a few have data at optical wavelengths in the first minutes after the onset of the prompt emission. Here we report on GRB 190106A, whose afterglow was observed in optical bands just 36 s after the Swift/BAT trigger, i.e., during the prompt emission phase. The early optical afterglow exhibits a bimodal structure followed by a normal decay, with a faster decay after ∼ T _0 + 1 day. We present optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of GRB 190106A. We derive the redshift via metal absorption lines from Xinglong 2.16 m/BFOSC spectroscopic observations. From the BFOSC spectrum, we measure z = 1.861 ± 0.002. The double-peak optical light curve is a significant feature predicted by the reverse-forward external-shock model. The shallow decay followed by a normal decay in both the X-ray and optical light curves is well explained with the standard forward-shock model with late-time energy injection. Therefore, GRB 190106A offers a case study for GRB emission from both reverse and forward shocks.

The Gravitational Wave High-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a pair of microsatellites (i.e., GECAM-A and GECAM-B) dedicated to monitoring gamma-ray transients including the high-energy electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves, such as gamma-ray bursts, soft gamma-ray repeaters, solar flares, and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes. Since launch in 2020 December, GECAM-B has detected hundreds of astronomical and terrestrial events. For these bursts, localization is the key for burst identification and classification as well as follow-up observations in multiple wavelengths. Here, we propose a Bayesian localization method with Poisson data with Gaussian background profile likelihood to localize GECAM bursts based on the distribution of burst counts in detectors with different orientations. We demonstrate that this method can work well for all kinds of bursts, especially extremely short ones. In addition, we propose a new method to estimate the systematic error of localization based on a confidence level test, which can overcome some problems of the existing method in the literature. We validate this method by Monte Carlo simulations, and then apply it to a burst sample with accurate location and find that the mean value of the systematic error of GECAM-B localization is ∼2.°5. By considering this systematic error, we can obtain a reliable localization probability map for GECAM bursts. Our methods can be applied to other gamma-ray monitors.

We report detailed polarization and single-pulse studies of PSR B0950+08 with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) at 1250 MHz. Significant bridge emission was observed between the inter-pulse and the main pulse and the height of the bridge decreased with increase in frequency. Our results support the interpretation that both the inter-pulse and the main pulse of this pulsar are from the same magnetic pole. From the relative peak flux density and the relative energy distribution, we conclude that no giant pulse was detected in PSR B0950+08. Our results provide opportunities to study the origin of the emission from PSR B0950+08 and offer new insights into the origins of pulsar emission and bridge emission.

Abstract Plastics are extensively used in our daily life. However, a significant amount of plastic waste is discharged to the environment directly or via improper reuse or recycling. Degradation of plastic waste generates micro- or nano-sized plastic particles that are defined as micro- or nanoplastics (MNPs). Microplastics (MPs) are plastic particles with a diameter less than 5 mm, while nanoplastics (NPs) range in diameter from 1 to 100 or 1000 nm. In the current review, we first briefly summarized the environmental contamination of MNPs and then discussed their health impacts based on existing MNP research. Our review indicates that MNPs can be detected in both marine and terrestrial ecosystems worldwide and be ingested and accumulated by animals along the food chain. Evidence has suggested the harmful health impacts of MNPs on marine and freshwater animals. Recent studies found MPs in human stool samples, suggesting that humans are exposed to MPs through food and/or drinking water. However, the effect of MNPs on human health is scarcely researched. In addition to the MNPs themselves, these tiny plastic particles can release plastic additives and/or adsorb other environmental chemicals, many of which have been shown to exhibit endocrine disrupting and other toxic effects. In summary, we conclude that more studies are necessary to provide a comprehensive understanding of MNP pollution hazards and also provide a basis for the subsequent pollution management and control.

BackgroundWhile previous studies identified risk factors for diverse pregnancy outcomes, traditional statistical methods had limited ability to quantify their impacts on birth outcomes precisely. We aimed to use a novel approach that applied different machine learning models to not only predict birth outcomes but systematically quantify the impacts of pre- and post-conception serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and other predictive characteristics on birth outcomes.MethodsWe used data from women who gave birth in Shanghai First Maternal and Infant Hospital from 2014 to 2015. We included 14,110 women with the measurement of preconception TSH in the first analysis and 3,428 out of 14,110 women with both pre- and post-conception TSH measurement in the second analysis. Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) was applied to adjust the imbalance of outcomes. We randomly split (7:3) the data into a training set and a test set in both analyses. We compared Area Under Curve (AUC) for dichotomous outcomes and macro F1 score for categorical outcomes among four machine learning models, including logistic model, random forest model, XGBoost model, and multilayer neural network models to assess model performance. The model with the highest AUC or macro F1 score was used to quantify the importance of predictive features for adverse birth outcomes with the loss function algorithm.ResultsThe XGBoost model provided prominent advantages in terms of improved performance and prediction of polytomous variables. Predictive models with abnormal preconception TSH or not-well-controlled TSH, a novel indicator with pre- and post-conception TSH levels combined, provided the similar robust prediction for birth outcomes. The highest AUC of 98.7% happened in XGBoost model for predicting low Apgar score with not-well-controlled TSH adjusted. By loss function algorithm, we found that not-well-controlled TSH ranked 4th, 6th, and 7th among 14 features, respectively, in predicting birthweight, induction, and preterm birth, and 3rd among 19 features in predicting low Apgar score.ConclusionsOur four machine learning models offered valid predictions of birth outcomes in women during pre- and post-conception. The predictive features panel suggested the combined TSH indicator (not-well-controlled TSH) could be a potentially competitive biomarker to predict adverse birth outcomes.

With a high rate of infertility, it is important to understand the context of fertility and family planning in China, to inform the necessity of supportive care. A literature review was undertaken to explore the societal constructs informing perspectives of childbearing, family planning and infertility, alongside Chinese considerations of fertility treatments, including assisted reproductive technologies and fertility counselling. In China, childbearing attitudes and behaviours are shaped by tensions between traditional cultural values of the filial piety originating from Confucianism, the history of strict family planning policy, the recent termination of one-child policy and the socioeconomic circumstance. For infertile Chinese individuals, the inability to meet these childbearing expectations gives rise to significant pressure and consequent psychological distress, particularly depressive symptoms. Demographic factors such as gender, education, income and geographical location have been found to influence prevalence and degree of depression in infertile Chinese men and women. These difficulties are compounded by barriers of cultural acceptance, legislative restrictions and availability of resources for alternative options such as adoption and surrogacy. It is important that these fertility sociocultural factors are taken into consideration when assisting Chinese patients to access and utilise fertility treatment services.

When an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) performs tasks such as power patrol inspection, water quality detection, field scientific observation, etc., due to the limitations of the computing capacity and battery power, it cannot complete the tasks efficiently. Therefore, an effective method is to deploy edge servers near the UAV. The UAV can offload some of the computationally intensive and real-time tasks to edge servers. In this paper, a mobile edge computing offloading strategy based on reinforcement learning is proposed. Firstly, the Stackelberg game model is introduced to model the UAV and edge nodes in the network, and the utility function is used to calculate the maximization of offloading revenue. Secondly, as the problem is a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem, we introduce the multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) to solve it. Finally, the effects of the number of UAVs and the summation of computing resources on the total revenue of the UAVs were simulated through simulation experiments. The experimental results show that compared with other algorithms, the algorithm proposed in this paper can more effectively improve the total benefit of UAVs.

The Industrial Internet of Things is cited as the latest means for making manufacturing more flexible, cost effective, and responsive to changes in customer demands. In this paper, we present a mobile cloud based scheduling strategy for the industrial Internet of Things. Several computing paradigms, such as mobile cloud computing, fog computing, and edge computing can be integrated to the industrial Internet of Things, which allow to offload tasks to the cloud for execution. We model the task scheduling problem as an energy consumption optimization problem, while taking into account task dependency, data transmission, and some constraint conditions, such as response time deadline and cost, and further solve it by genetic algorithms. A series of simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the algorithm and the results have shown that our proposal is more efficient than the baseline approach.

Today, vehicles are increasingly being connected to the Internet of Things, which enables them to obtain high-quality services. However, the numerous vehicular applications and time-varying network status make it challenging for onboard terminals to achieve efficient computing. Therefore, based on a three-stage model of local-edge clouds and reinforcement learning, we propose a task offloading algorithm for the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). First, we establish communication methods between vehicles and their cost functions. In addition, according to the real-time state of vehicles, we analyze their computing requirements and the price function. Finally, we propose an experience-driven offloading strategy based on multi-agent reinforcement learning. The simulation results show that the algorithm increases the probability of success for the task and achieves a balance between the task vehicle delay, expenditure, task vehicle utility and service vehicle utility under various constraints.

There is a clinical need to develop a bioengineering system to support ovary transplantation. Here, the authors generate a bioprosthetic ovary using 3D printed scaffolds of varying pore architectures to support follicle survival and ovarian function in sterilized mice.

The female reproductive tract constitutes the ovary, fallopian tubes, uterus, and cervix, but it is challenging to engineer this systemin vitro. Here, the authors develop a microfluidic device (EVATAR) with reproductive tract and peripheral tissues to replicate hormone release of a 28-day menstrual cycle.

Hybrid wireless mesh networks are suitable for complex environment communication in coal mine. Mesh clients with application service and routing function in hybrid wireless mesh networks can form a highly robust hybrid network with mesh routers. The processes of nutrient flux transfer and path choice in Physarum network are similar to data transmission and routing selection in hybrid wireless mesh networks. In this article, we use Physarum-inspired autonomic optimization model to design a Physarum-inspired multi-parameter adaptive routing protocol to improve the service quality of coal mine hybrid wireless mesh networks. Physarum-inspired multi-parameter adaptive routing protocol has achieved distributed routing decision by drawing the hybrid wireless mesh network parameters into Poisson’s equation of Physarum-inspired autonomic optimization model to measure the quality of link and implements two adjustment strategies to make the protocol more adaptive. The resource-dependent adjustment, which considers the irreversible energy consumption and recoverable buffer occupation, makes the energy consumption problem prominent when there is a lack of energy. The position-dependent adjustment makes routing decision efficient according to the load of different positions, which is caused by many-to-one data transmission model in coal mine. Based on NS2, simulation experiments are performed to evaluate the performance of Physarum-inspired multi-parameter adaptive routing protocol, and the results are compared with those of ad hoc on-demand distance vector, HOPNET, ANT-DSR, and Physarum-inspired routing protocols. The experimental results show that the route path selected by Physarum-inspired multi-parameter adaptive routing protocol is better than those selected by the other four protocols in the performance of average end-to-end delay and delivery ratio. The balance of energy consumption and network load is achieved and the network lifetime is effectively prolonged when using Physarum-inspired multi-parameter adaptive routing protocol.

PRSS23 and PRSS35 are homologous proteases originally identified in mouse ovaries. In the periimplantation mouse uterus, Prss23 was highly expressed in the preimplantation gestation day 3.5 (D3.5) uterine luminal epithelium (LE). It disappeared from the postimplantation LE and reappeared in the stromal compartment next to the myometrium on D6.5. It was undetectable in the embryo from D4.5 to D6.5 but highly expressed in the embryo on D7.5. Prss35 became detectable in the uterine stromal compartment surrounding the embryo on D4.5 and shifted towards the mesometrial side of the stromal compartment next to the embryo from D5.5 to D7.5. In the ovariectomized uterus, Prss23 was moderately and Prss35 was dramatically downregulated by progesterone and 17β-estradiol. Based on the expression of Prss35 in granulosa cells and corpus luteum of the ovary and the early pregnant uterus, we hypothesized that PRSS35 might play a role in female reproduction, especially in oocyte development, ovulation, implantation, and decidualization. This hypothesis was tested in Prss35((-/-)) mice, which proved otherwise. Between wild type (WT) and Prss35((-/-)) mice, superovulation of immature females produced comparable numbers of cumulus-oocyte complexes; there were comparable numbers of implantation sites detected on D4.5 and D7.5; there were no obvious differences in the expression of implantation and decidualization marker genes in D4.5 or D7.5 uteri. Comparable mRNA expression levels of a few known protease-related genes in the WT and Prss35((-/-)) D4.5 uteri indicated no compensatory upregulation. Comparable litter sizes from WT × WT and Prss35((-/-))× Prss35((-/-)) crosses suggested that Prss35 gene was unessential for fertility and embryo development. Prss35 gene has been linked to cleft lip/palate in humans. However, no obvious such defects were observed in Prss35((-/-)) mice. This study demonstrates the distinct expression of Prss23 and Prss35 in the periimplantation uterus and the dispensable role of Prss35 in fertility and embryo development.

N-acetylneuraminate pyruvate lyase (NPL) catalyzes N-acetylneuraminic acid, the predominant sialic acid. Microarray analysis of the periimplantation mouse uterine luminal epithelium (LE) revealed Npl being the most downregulated (35×) gene in the LE upon embryo implantation. In natural pregnant mouse uterus, Npl expression increased 56× from gestation day 0.5 (D0.5) to D2.5. In ovariectomized mouse uterus, Npl was significantly upregulated by progesterone (P4) but downregulated by 17β-estradiol (E2). Progesterone receptor (PR) antagonist RU486 blocked the upregulation of Npl in both preimplantation uterus and P4-treated ovariectomized uterus. Npl was specifically localized in the preimplantation D2.5 and D3.5 uterine LE. Since LE is essential for establishing uterine receptivity, it was hypothesized that NPL might play a critical role in uterine function, especially during embryo implantation. This hypothesis was tested in the Npl ((-/-)) mice. No significant differences were observed in the numbers of implantation sites on D4.5, gestation periods, litter sizes, and postnatal offspring growth between wild type (WT) and Npl ((-/-)) females from mating with WT males. Npl ((-/-))xNpl ((-/-)) crosses produced comparable little sizes as that from WTxWT crosses. Comparable mRNA expression levels of several genes involved in sialic acid metabolism were observed in D3.5 uterus and uterine LE between WT and Npl ((-/-)), indicating no compensatory upregulation in the D3.5 Npl ((-/-)) uterus and LE. This study demonstrates PR-mediated dynamic expression of Npl in the periimplantation uterus and dispensable role of Npl in uterine function and embryo development.
