The Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome has been a known clinical entity for over fifty years. In 1967 Durrer et al postulated WPW syndrome was due to an accessory pathway, bypassing the AV node, from the atria to the ventricles1. This was later confirmed by epicardial mapping. WPW is the second most common cause of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias in the western world and the most common cause in China2. WPW syndrome has a prevalence of 1.5 to 3.1 per 1000 persons in western countries3,4,5 . Patients with the WPW syndrome may present with palpitations, presyncope, syncope, or sudden cardiac death (SCD). In some patients the first and only manifestation of the disease is SCD. This is more likely to occur in the setting of atrial fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response. Electrocardiographic findings of WPW syndrome consist of preexcitation manifested by a shortened PR interval (<120 msec), a widened QRS (>100 msec) a delta wave (abnormal initial QRS vector) and supraventricular tachycardia. The EKG finding of preexcitation is a result of early ventricular depolarization through the accessory pathway. SVT can occur with retrograde or antigrade conduction through the accessory pathway forming the basis of the so-called “macro-reentrant” arrhythmia model 6. Rapid conduction through the accessory pathway in the setting of atrial fibrillation markedly increases the risk of SCD7. We recently identified the gene responsible for familial Wolff-Parkinson-White 8. The gene (PRKAG2) which encodes for a protein AMPK (AMP- activated protein kinase) was identified as the causal gene. Missense (single nucleotide change) mutations in this gene were identified in families with WPW. Six such mutations have been identified. Along with preexcitation the affected families had conduction abnormalities (AV block) and cardiac hypertrophy.

This study draws on Simons' levers of control model to explore how companies rely on the balanced use of diagnostic and interactive performance measurement systems (PMS) to translate corporate social responsibility (CSR) into superior performance. Data were collected based on a survey data set from 98 CFOs of public listed companies in Iran. The theoretical model was tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS‐SEM, SmartPLS 3.0), which enjoys minimum demands concerning normality assumptions and sample size. The findings show that CSR is positively associated with PMS and organizational performance. Moreover, CSR is indirectly related to organizational performance through the mediating effect of PMS. This study extends the previous literature by simultaneously incorporating resource orchestration theory in the management accounting and CSR settings. The findings provide further insights into the issue of how adopting proper management control mechanisms (e.g., balanced use of PMS) can support organizations in orchestrating the social, environmental, and economic impacts more effectively. This paper examines how coercive control underlies financial abuse as men re-interpret the gender of money, stripping it of its moral safeguards. Financial abuse denies women access and agency over money. It works through male reinterpretation of how money is gendered – that is the way men and women own, inherit, use, manage and control money. Recent Indian migrant women experience coercive control when the male control of money is exercised without responsibility for the welfare of the wife and children. The family boundary of money becomes a way of extorting money from the wife's family. Sending money home, a sign of filial responsibility, becomes abusive when the wife is not consulted, leaving the family in Australia without sufficient money for their settlement needs. The distinctive Indian caste system divides Hindu society into a hierarchy of four varnas, each of which also has a traditional association with particular categories of occupations. This exploratory study examines the interplay between varna and the emergent organised accounting profession in India. Using the earliest available membership list of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) – being 1953, just four years after the organisation’s formation – a comprehensive classification of the caste status of the Hindu membership was undertaken. Among other findings, this revealed a significant over-representation of the Brahman upper caste relative to this caste’s presence in the general population. This Brahman presence is posited as having endowed a status to the accounting occupation that aided the replication in India of the British model of professional organisation. However, it also meant that the formation of the ICAI would predominantly benefit an already privileged social stratum and contribute to perpetuating traditional caste hierarchies within the modern occupation of professional accounting. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the intellectual capital (IC) performance of Australian banks for the period 2005-2007. It also aims to examine the relationship amongst various constituents of IC performance. Design/methodology/approach – The value added intellectual coefficient (VAIC™) approach developed by Pulic is used to determine the IC performance of the Australian banks. The required data to calculate different constituents of IC was obtained from the annual reports of Australian banks. Findings – The paper reveals that VAIC™ has a significant relation with human costs and the value addition made by the Australian banks. All Australian owned banks have relatively higher human capital efficiency than capital employed efficiency and structural capital efficiency. The size of the bank in terms of total assets, total number of employees and total shareholders equity has little or no impact on the IC performance of the Australian owned banks. Research limitations/implications – The paper analyses IC performance of only 11 Australian owned banks. However, the more than 90 per cent market share enjoyed by these banks still promises a degree of validation of the results of the paper from the Australian perspective or similar banking structure in some countries. Practical implications – The findings may serve as a useful input for bankers to apply knowledge management in their institutions and in addressing the factors affecting IC performance in order to maximise their value creation. The findings of the study would also provide some information to the stakeholders and potential investors to assess the value creation capabilities of this group of banks. Familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic disease defined by cardiac hypertrophy in the absence of an increased external load. It is the most common inherited cardiac disorder occurring in 1 in 500 individuals. Ten genes exhibiting over 200 mutations have been identified. However,about 75% are due to mutations in just three genes: β-myosin heavy chain,cardiac troponin T, and myosin binding protein-C. Certain phenotypes are more common with certain genes, such as the myosin binding protein-C gene, which induces the disease predominantly in the fifth or sixth decade of life. Genetic animal models in the mouse and rabbit have helped to elucidate the pathophysiology. The primary defect imparted by the specific mutation alters contractile function, which stimulates release of various growth factors that induce secondary cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis.Placebo single-blinded studies in the mouse indicate that losartan reverses the phenotype; in the rabbit, simvastatin essentially reversed the phenotype after 12 weeks of therapy.
