We report the synthesis and characterization of two diastereomeric phosphoramidite calix[4]pyrrole cavitands and their corresponding gold(I) complexes, 2 in •Au(I)•Cl and 2 out •Au(I)•Cl, featuring the metal center directed inward and outward with respect to their aromatic cavity. We studied the catalytic activity of the complexes in the hydration of a series of propargyl esters as the benchmarking reaction. All substrates were equipped with a six-membered ring substituent either lacking or including a polar group featuring different hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) capabilities. We designed the substrates with the polar group to form 1:1 inclusion complexes of different stabilities with the catalysts. In the case of 2 in •Au(I)•OTf, the 1:1 complex placed the alkynyl group of the bound substrate close to the metal center. We compared the obtained results with those of a model phosphoramidite gold(I) complex lacking a calix[4]pyrrole cavity. We found that for all catalysts, the presence of an increasingly polar HBA group in the substrate provoked a decrease in the hydration rate constants. We attributed this result to the competing coordination of the HBA group of the substrate for the Au(I) metal center of the catalysts.

Systematic errors in the calix [4] pyrrole-based potentiometric detection of creatinine have been observed in heavy smokers. This work further characterizes the interactions between the nicotinium cation and the cavitand as well as the resulting interference produced during the potentiometric detection. It is found that the nicotinium cation binds the electronic rich aromatic cavity defined by the pyrrole rings of the receptor's cone conformation with an estimated binding constant higher than 10 -4  M -1 in methylene chloride. On the other hand, the creatininium cation is preferentially included in the hydrophobic aromatic cavity of the ionophore by establishing hydrogen bond interactions with the pyrrole NHs groups. Potentiometric calibrations confirmed the detection of the nicotinium cation at neutral and acidic pH, respectively. Due to the lower pka of creatinine, a methodology to quantify creatinine in presence of nicotine by using an array of three sensors at two pH values is proposed. A partial least squares regression was performed and reported recoveries of 103% with a standard deviation of 20%. The improved determination of creatinine was therefore discussed. Calix[4]pyrrole phosphonate-cavitands were used as receptors for the design of supramolecular sensors for creatinine and its lipophilic derivative hexylcreatinine. The sensing principle is based on indicator displacement assays of an inherently fluorescent guest dye or a black-hole quencher from the receptor's cavity by means of competition with the creatinine analytes. The systems were thermodynamically and kinetically characterized regarding their 1:1 binding properties by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H and 31 P NMR), isothermal titration calorimetry, and optical spectroscopies (UV/vis absorption and fluorescence). For the use of the black-hole indicator dye, the calix[4]pyrrole was modified with a dansyl chromophore as a signaling unit that engages in Förster resonance energy transfer with the indicator dye. The 1:1 binding constants of the indicator dyes are in the range of 10 7 M -1 , while hexylcreatinine showed values around (2-4) × 10 5 M -1 . The competitive displacement of the indicators by hexylcreatinine produced supramolecular fluorescence turn-on sensors that work at micromolar analyte concentrations that are compatible with those observed for healthy as well as sick patients. The limit of detection for one of the systems reached submicromolar ranges (110 nM).

Gap wind jets (Tehuano winds) trigger supersquirts of colder water and mesoscale asymmetric dipoles in the Gulf of Tehuantepec (GT). However, the effects of successive gap wind jets on dipoles and their effects inside eddies have not yet been studied. Based on the wind fields, geostrophic currents, and surface drifter dispersion, this research documented three dipoles triggered and modified by Tehuano winds. Once a dipole develops, successive gap wind jets strengthen the vortices, and the anticyclonic eddy migrates southwestward while the cyclonic eddy is maintained on the east side of the GT. During the wind relaxation stage, the cyclonic eddy may propagate westward, but due to the subsequent re-intensification of the Tehuano winds, the vortex could break down, as was suggested by surface drifter dispersion pattern and geostrophic field data. The effect of the Tehuano winds was evaluating via eddy-Ekman pumping. Under Tehuano wind conditions, Ekman downwelling (upwelling) inside the anticyclonic (cyclonic) eddies may reach ~ -2.0 (0.5) m d-1 and decrease as the wind weakens. In the absence of Tehuano winds, Ekman downwelling inside the anticyclonic eddy was ~ 0.1 (-0.1) m d-1. The asymmetry of downwelling and upwelling inside eddies during Tehuano wind events may be associated with Tehuano wind forcing., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Despite significant advances in the field of resuscitation science, important knowledge gaps persist. Current guidelines for resuscitation are based on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation 2015 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations, which includes treatment recommendations supported by the available evidence. The writing group developed this consensus statement with the goal of focusing future research by addressing the knowledge gaps identified during and after the 2015 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation evidence evaluation process. Key publications since the 2015 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations are referenced, along with known ongoing clinical trials that are likely to affect future guidelines. © 2018 European Resuscitation Council and American Heart Association, Inc. The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation has initiated a near-continuous review of cardiopulmonary resuscitation science that replaces the previous 5-year cyclic batch-and-queue approach process. This is the first of an annual series of International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations summary articles that will include the cardiopulmonary resuscitation science reviewed by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation in the previous year. The review this year includes 5 basic life support and 1 pediatric Consensuses on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations. Each of these includes a summary of the science and its quality based on Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation criteria and treatment recommendations. Insights into the deliberations of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation task force members are provided in Values and Preferences sections. Background: Melatonin has attracted attention because of their high antioxidant and anticarcinogenic activity. Otherwise, the use of sunscreens is recommended for patients after chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments or to prevent UV radiation-induced skin damages that may result in pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions., Objective: To evaluate the beneficial influence of melatonin in topical sunscreen emulsions combined with three common ultraviolet filters., Methods: After the formulation characterization in terms of rheology, stability studies were performed. Release studies let us to evaluate its mechanism of delivery and ex vivo permeation study through human skin, the amount of melatonin retained. The antioxidant activity assay was also carried out, and finally the in vivo photoprotective effect in rats was tested as transepidermal water loss and erythema formation., Results: The rheological behaviour of formulations was pseudoplastic fluid, all emulsions had good physical stability. Release studies showed a trend of enhancement in melatonin release from emulsions incorporating UV filters and followed a Weibull model. Melatonin permeation was higher from the emulsion containing melatonin combined with a mixture of three ultraviolet filters (MMIX) formulation. Equally this formulation exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity. Finally the photoprotective assay showed that only skin areas treated with this formulation were statistically equivalent to the unirradiated control area., Conclusion: MMIX formulation would be a promising formulation for preventing the undesirable adverse effects of UV skin irradiation because melatonin not only acts as a potent antioxidant itself, but also is capable of activating an endogenous enzymatic protective system against oxidative stress., (Copyright © 2012 Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology.
