We analyze theoretically two different setups for s-wave superconductivity (SC) proximitized $j=3/2$ particles in Luttinger materials that are able to host Majorana bound states (MBSs). First, we consider a one-dimensional SC wire with intrinsic bulk inversion asymmetry (BIA). In contrast to wires, modeled by a quadratic dispersion with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, there are two topological phase transitions in our systems at finite magnetic fields. Second, we analyze a two-dimensional Josephson junction on the Luttinger model finding a topological region even in the absence of BIA and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. This originates from the hybridization of the light and heavy hole bands of the $j=3/2$ states in combination with the SC pairing. As a consequence, both systems can be driven into a topological phase hosting MBSs. Hence, we predict that MBSs form in any SC proximitized Josephson junction on 2D Luttinger materials by the application of magnetic field alone. The helical distribution of the electronic density in chiral molecules, such as DNA and bacteriorhodopsin, has been suggested to induce a spin-orbit coupling interaction that may lead to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Key ingredients for the theoretical modelling are, in this context, the helically shaped potential of the molecule and, concomitantly, a Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling due to the appearance of a magnetic field in the electron reference frame. Symmetries of these models clearly play a crucial role in explaining the observed effect, but a thorough analysis has been largely ignored in the literature. In this work, we present a study of these symmetries and how they can be exploited to enhance chiral-induced spin selectivity in helical molecular systems.

Coulomb drag between nanoscale conductors is of both fundamental and practical interest. Here, we theoretically study drag in a double quantum-dot (QD) system consisting of a biased drive QD and an unbiased drag QD coupled via a direct interdot Coulomb interaction. We demonstrate that the Coulomb drag is driven by the charge fluctuations in the drive QD, and show how the properties of the associated quantum noise allow to distinguish it from, e.g., shot-noise driven drag in circuits of weakly interacting quantum conductors. In the strong-interaction regime exhibiting an orbital ("pseudospin") Kondo effect, the drag is governed by charge fluctuations induced by pseudospin-flip cotunneling processes. The quenching of pseudospin-flip processes by Kondo correlations are found to suppress the drag at low bias and introduce a zero-bias anomaly in the second-order differential transconductance. Finally, we show that the drag is maximized for values of the interdot interaction matching the lead couplings. The archetypal two-impurity Kondo problem in a serially-coupled double quantum dot is investigated in the presence of a thermal bias $\theta$. The slave-boson formulation is employed to obtain the nonlinear thermal and thermoelectrical responses. When the Kondo correlations prevail over the antiferromagnetic coupling $J$ between dot spins we demonstrate that the setup shows negative differential thermal conductance regions behaving as a thermal diode. Besides, we report a sign reversal of the thermoelectric current $I(\theta)$ controlled by $t/\Gamma$ ($t$ and $\Gamma$ denote the interdot tunnel and reservoir-dot tunnel couplings, respectively) and $\theta$. All these features are attributed to the fact that at large $\theta$, both $Q(\theta)$ (heat current) and $I(\theta)$ are suppressed regardless the value of $t/\Gamma$ because the double dot decouples at high thermal biases. Recent experiments demonstrate a temperature control of the electric conduction through a ferrocene-based molecular junction. Here we examine the results in view of determining means to distinguish between transport through single-particle molecular levels or via transport channels split by Coulomb repulsion. Both transport mechanisms are similar in molecular junctions given the similarities between molecular intralevel energies and the charging energy. We propose an experimentally testable way to identify the main transport process. By applying a magnetic field to the molecule, we observe that an interacting theory predicts a shift of the conductance resonances of the molecule whereas in the noninteracting case each resonance is split into two peaks. The interaction model works well in explaining our experimental results obtained in a ferrocene-based single-molecule junction, where the charge degeneracy peaks shift (but do not split) under the action of an applied 7-Tesla magnetic field. We investigate the heat current of a strongly interacting quantum dot in the presence of a voltage bias in the Kondo regime. Using the slave- boson mean-field theory, we discuss the behavior of the energy flow and the Joule heating. We find that both contributions to the heat current dis- play interesting symmetry properties under reversal of the applied dc bias. We show that the symmetries arise from the behavior of the dot trans- mission function. Importantly, the transmission probability is a function of both energy and voltage. This allows us to analyze the heat current in the nonlinear regime of transport. We observe that nonlinearities ap- pear already for voltages smaller than the Kondo temperature. We consider a strongly interacting quantum dot connected to two leads held at quite different temperatures. Our aim is to study the behavior of the Kondo effect in the presence of large thermal biases. We use three different approaches, namely, a perturbation formalism based on the Kondo Hamiltonian, a slave-boson mean-field theory for the Anderson model at large charging energies and a truncated equation-of-motion approach beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. The two former formalisms yield a suppression of the Kondo peak for thermal gradients above the Kondo temperature, showing a remarkably good agreement despite their different ranges of validity. The third technique allows us to analyze the full density of states within a wide range of energies. Additionally, we have investigated the quantum transport properties (electric current and thermocurrent) beyond linear response. In the voltage-driven case, we reproduce the split differential conductance due to the presence of different electrochemical potentials. In the temperature-driven case, we observe a strongly nonlinear thermocurrent as a function of the applied thermal gradient. Depending on the parameters, we can find nontrivial zeros in the electric current for finite values of the temperature bias. We investigate the nonequilibrium transport properties of a double quantum dot system connected in parallel to two leads, including intradot electron-electron interaction. In the absence of interactions the system supports a bound state in the continuum. This state is revealed as a Fano antiresonance in the transmission when the energy levels of the dots are detuned. Using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we find that the occurrence of the Fano antiresonance survives in the presence of Coulomb repulsion. We give precise predictions for the experimental detection of bound states in the continuum. First, we calculate the differential conductance as a function of the applied voltage and the dot level detuning and find that crossing points in the diamond structure are revealed as minima due to the transmission antiresonances. Second, we determine the thermoelectric current in response to an applied temperature bias. In the linear regime, quantum interference gives rise to sharp peaks in the thermoelectric conductance. Remarkably, we find interaction induced strong current nonlinearities for large thermal gradients that may lead to several nontrivial zeros in the thermocurrent. We analyze the heat current flowing across interacting quantum dots within the Coulomb blockade regime. Power can be generated by either voltage or temperature biases. In the former case, we find nonlinear contributions to the Peltier effect that are dominated by conventional Joule heating for sufficiently high voltages. In the latter case, the differential thermal conductance shows maxima or minima depending on the energy level position. We investigate the nonlinear regime of charge and energy transport through Coulomb-blockaded quantum dots. We discuss crossed effects that arise when electrons move in response to thermal gradients (Seebeck effect) or energy flows in reaction to voltage differences (Peltier effect). We find that the differential thermoelectric conductance shows a characteristic Coulomb butterfly structure due to charging effects. Importantly, we show that experimentally observed thermovoltage zeros are caused by the activation of Coulomb resonances at large thermal shifts. Furthermore, the power dissipation asymmetry between the two attached electrodes can be manipulated with the applied voltage, which has implications for the efficient design of nanoscale coolers., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures
