A varactor-based reconfigurable multifunctional metasurface capable of simultaneous beam steering, polarization conversion and phase offset is proposed in this paper. The unit cell is designed to naturally decompose the incident waves into two equal amplitude orthogonal linear components, and by integrating varactors, the reflection phase of the field components can be engineered from $-180^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$.Taking advantage of the infinite states of the varactors, this design integrates a new function, the phase offset. After simulation validation of its capability, a four-layer $7$ by $6$ unit one-dimensional prototype is fabricated as a printed circuit board. It is experimentally demonstrated that it switches between X/Y and circular polarization with more than $10$ dB cross polarization isolation, while reaching $\pm45^{\circ}$ steering and $\pm180^{\circ}$ phase offset.

Manipulating the electromagnetic (EM) reflection behavior from an arbitrary surface dynamically on arbitrary design goals is an ultimate ambition for many EM stealth and communication problems, yet it is nearly impossible to accomplish with conventional analysis and optimization techniques. In this paper we present a reconfigurable conformal metasurface prototype as well as a workflow that enables it to respond to multiple design targets on the reflection pattern with extremely low on-site computing power and time. The metasurface is driven by a sequential tandem neural network which is pre-trained using actual experimental data, avoiding any possible errors that may arise from calculation, simulation or manufacturing tolerances. This platform empowers the surface to operate accurately in a complex environment including varying incident angle and operating frequency, or even with other scatterers present close to the surface. The proposed data-driven approach requires minimum amount of prior knowledge and human effort yet provides maximized versatility on the reflection control, stepping towards the end form of an artificial-intelligence-based tunable EM surface.

Breaking reciprocity in the microwave frequency range will have important implications for modern electronic systems. Since it usually involves bulky biasing magnets or complex spatial-temporal modulations, exploring a lightweight, all-passive approach becomes intriguing. Starting from a circuit model, we theoretically demonstrate the nonreciprocal behaviour on a transmission line building block creating a strong field asymmetry with a switchable matching stub to enable two distinct working states. After translating to an electromagnetic model, this concept is first proved by simulation and then experimentally verified on a microstrip-line-based diode-integrated metasurface showing nonreciprocal transmission. This printed circuit board design is expected to find various applications in electromagnetic protecting layers, communication systems, microwave isolators and circulators.

Metasurfaces provide unique capability in guiding surface waves and controlling their polarization and dispersion properties. One way to do that is by analyzing their equifrequency contours. Equifrequency contours are the 2D projection of the 3D dispersion diagram. Since they are a k-space map representation of the surface, many of the wave properties can be understood through the Equifrequency contours. In this paper, we investigate numerically and experimentally the engineering of equifrequency contours using C-shape metasurface design. We show the ability to provide high self-collimation as well as spin-dependent wave splitting for the same metasurface by tuning the frequency of operation. We also show the ability to steer the wave along a defined curved path by rotating the C-shape which results in rotating its equifrequency contours. Nonreciprocal transport of electromagnetic waves within magnetized plasma is a powerful building block towards understanding and exploiting the properties of more general topological systems. Much recent attention has been paid to the theoretical issues of wave interaction within such a medium, but there is a lack of experimental verification that such systems can be viable in a lab or industrial setting. This work provides an experimental proof-of-concept by demonstrating nonreciprocity in a unit component, a microwave plasma circulator. We design an E-plane Y junction plasma circulator operating in the range of 4 to 6 GHz using standardized waveguide specifications. From both simulations and experiments, we observe wide band isolation for the power transmission through the circulator. The performance and the frequency band of the circulator can be easily tuned by changing the plasma density and the magnetic field strength. Symmetry indicators are a modern tool for characterizing topological phases that require only minimal computational expense but provide an elegant means of designing practical devices. This paper demonstrates how a rotational symmetry indicator can be used to construct and characterize a topologically robust waveguide, which is then verified experimentally on a printed circuit board (PCB) platform. The design takes advantage of the real-space gauge-dependency of the symmetry indicators and adopts a $C_6$ lattice with simple shifts, forming a defect line supporting topological edge modes. It is shown that the modes can realize the same features as previous topological waveguides, but in addition possesses a greater degree of reconfigurability and the unique ability to form a one-way termination. Moreover, the design illustrates the critical role real space information plays in determining the topological properties of photonic crystals, enabling a wider range of possible realizations.

We describe the possibility for topologically robust edge states existing on interfaces of triangular lattices which are supported by rotational symmetries that are sensitive to boundary conditions. Such states are trivial from the perspective of Berry curvature, but result instead from an interplay between crystalline symmetries and finite boundary effects. Regardless, we show such states are in a distinct topological phase, provided the gauge-dependent symmetries are maintained. Such a model describes a number of recent bosonic experimental demonstrations on triangular lattices, the physics for which has thus far eluded explanation., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. The latest advances in topological physics have yielded a rich toolset to design highly robust wave transfer systems, for overcoming issues like beam steering and lateral diffraction in surface acoustic waves (SAWs). However, presently used designs for topologically protected SAWs have been largely limited to spin or valley-polarized phases, which rely on non-zero Berry curvature effects. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a highly robust SAW waveguide on lithium niobate (LiNbO3), based on a line defect within a true triangular phononic lattice, which instead employs an intrinsic chirality of phase vortices and maintains a zero Berry curvature. The guided SAW mode spans a wide bandwidth and shows confinement in the lateral direction with 3 dB attenuation within half of the unit-cell length. SAW routing around sharp bends has been demonstrated in such waveguide, with less than ~4% reflection per bend. The waveguide has also been found robust for defect lines with different configurations. The fully on-chip system permits unidirectional SAW modes that are tightly bound to the waveguide, which provides a compact footprint ideal for miniaturization of practical applications and offers insight into the possibility of manipulating highly focused SAW propagation.

A metallic ring based, diode-integrated, low-profile, power-dependent, reflective metasurface working from 3 GHz to 3.6 GHz is proposed in this letter. Unlike the previous study which shifts a band up and down to change the impedance of the surface, the triggering of the diodes directly transforms the structure from a surface wave supportive state to a self-induced bandgap topology if exposed to high power RF illumination. We demonstrate the concept by conducting the EM-circuit co-simulation and measurements for a 6 by 8 unit 2D prototype. Near field scan experiments verify that the proposed topology works in two distinct states, the ON and OFF state, and high-power measurements prove that the reflection varies with the incident signal power. The highest 10 dB decrement in transmission occurs at 3.3 GHz with 52 dBm illumination. This structure can be used to protect sensitive devices from large signals while otherwise supporting a communication channel for small signals.

Wide-band absorption is a popular topic in microwave engineering to protect sensitive devices against broadband sources. However, the Bode-Fano criterion defines the trade-off between bandwidth and efficiency for all passive, linear, time-invariant systems. In this letter, we propose a broadband absorber beyond the Bode-Fano limit by creating an energy trap using time-modulated switch/diodes. This work starts with an ideal circuit model to prove the concept, followed by two EM realizations - a freuqnecy selective surface (FSS) approach for general bandwidth broadening and a low-profile PCB design. The prototype of the latter is built and measured, demonstrating a Bode-Fano integral larger than one. This approach paves a way to many practical ultra-wide band absorber designs.

The ability to control the directionality of surface waves by manipulating its polarization has been of great significance for applications in spintronics and polarization-based optics. Surface waves with evanescent tails are found to possess an inherent in-plane transverse spin which is dependent on the propagation direction while an out-of-plane transverse spin does not naturally occur for surface waves and requires a specific surface design. Here, we introduce a new type of surface waves called chiral surface wave which has two transverse spins, an in-plane one that is inherent to any surface wave and an out-of-plane spin which is enforced by the design due to strong x-to-y coupling and broken rotational symmetry. The two transverse spins are locked to the momentum. Our study opens a new direction for metasurface designs with enhanced and controlled spin-orbit interaction by adding an extra degree of freedom to control the propagation direction as well as the transverse spin of surface waves.

Control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves has reached a new level with the recent understanding of topological states of matter. These metamaterials have the potential to revolutionize many areas in traditional electromagnetic design, from highly robust cavities to small footprint waveguides. Much of the past literature has been on the cutting edge of condensed matter physics, but there is now ample opportunity to explore their usage for practical microwave and optical devices. To assist the beginner, in this Tutorial we give a basic introduction to the essential concepts of topological phenomena in electromagnetic systems, including geometric phases, topological invariants, pseudospin states, and the integer/valley/spin quantum Hall effects. Our focus is on engineered photonic topological insulators (PTIs) in two-dimensional systems. We highlight methods for characterizing such structures and how they result in unique wave-guiding properties. In addition, we provide recipes on how to realize PTIs using photonic crystals and metasurfaces, examine differences between different types of PTIs, and discuss limitations and advantages of some of the existing enabling platforms., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, journal article

Recent advances in topologically robust waveguiding for electromagnetic systems have presented opportunities for improving practical photonic and microwave devices. To bring this rich area of physics within the reach of application, it is critical for such systems to be interfaced with classical, continuous waveguiding and transmission line technology. This Letter presents a compact, highly efficient transition from a classical metallic transmission line to a topologically nontrivial line wave emulating the quantum spin Hall effect. A zero-gap antipodal slot line is used as the starting transmission line, which is then coupled to the topological metasurface via a field matching procedure. Additional modifications to the interface between the two structures to eliminate unwanted edge coupling improves transmission further. A simulated loss analysis isolates the effect of the transitions from the rest of the structure, showing a loss contribution of only 2.1% per classical-to-topological conversion. Using the transition, a quantitative characterization of the robustness of common topologically protected devices is presented. Confining sound is of significant importance for the manipulation and routing acoustic waves. We propose a Helmholtz resonator (HR) based subwavelength sound channel formed at the interface of two metamaterials, for this purpose. The confinement is quantified through (i) a substantial reduction of the pressure, and (ii) an increase in a specific acoustic impedance (defined by the ratio of the local pressure to the sound velocity) - to a very large value outside the channel. The sound confinement is robust to frequency as well as spatial disorder at the interface, as long as the interface related edge mode is situated within the band gap. A closed acoustic circuit was formed by introducing controlled disorder in the HR units at the corners, indicating the possibility of confining sound to a point.

Edge states protected by bulk topology of photonic crystals show robustness against short-range disorder, making robust information transfer possible. Here, topological photonic crystals under long-range deformations are investigated. Vertices of each regular hexagon in a honeycomb crystalline structure are shifted randomly to establish a deformed system. By increasing the degree of random deformations, a transition from an ordered system to an amorphous system are investigated, where the close of topological bandgap is clearly shown. We further present comprehensive investigations into excitation methods of the proposed deformed system. Due to the lack of strict periodicity, excitation of topological edge modes becomes difficult. Chiral and linearly polarized sources as two different methods are investigated respectively. It is found that chiral sources are sensitive and rely on the ordered lattice. Even a weak long-range deformation can bring fluctuations to transmission. We further designed and fabricated metal-dielectric-metal sandwich-like samples working in the microwave band. Using linearly polarized source, we detected the existence of topological transport in the deformed system. This work investigates excitation and robustness of bulk topology against long-range deformations and may open the way for exploiting topological properties of materials with a deformed lattice.

The discovery of topological insulators has rapidly been followed by the advent of their photonic analogues, motivated by the prospect of backscattering-immune light propagation. So far, however, implementations have mainly relied on engineering bulk modes in photonic crystals and waveguide arrays in two-dimensional systems, which closely mimic their electronic counterparts. In addition, metamaterials-based implementations subject to electromagnetic duality and bianisotropy conditions suffer from intricate designs and narrow operating bandwidths. Here, it is shown that symmetry-protected topological states akin to the quantum spin-Hall effect can be realized in a straightforward manner by coupling surface modes over metasurfaces of complementary electromagnetic responses. Specifically, stacking unit cells of such metasurfaces directly results in double Dirac cones of degenerate transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes, which break into a wide non-trivial bandgap at small inter-layer separation. Consequently, the ultrathin structure supports robust gapless edge states, which are confined along a one-dimensional line rather than a surface interface, as demonstrated at microwave frequencies by near field imaging. The simplicity and versatility of the proposed approach proves attractive as a tabletop platform for the study of classical topological phases, as well as for applications benefiting the compactness of metasurfaces and the potential of topological insulators., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

An anti-phase boundary is formed by shifting a portion of photonic crystal lattice along the direction of periodicity. A spinning magnetic dipole is applied to excite edge modes on the anti-phase boundary. We show the unidirectional propagation of the edge modes which is also known as spin-momentum locking. Band inversion of the edge modes is discovered when we sweep the geometrical parameters, which leads to a change in the propagation direction. Also, an optimized source is applied to excite the unidirectional edge mode with high directivity.

The role of frequency is very important in electromagnetics since it may significantly change how a material interacts with an incident wave if the frequency spectrum varies. Here, we demonstrate a new kind of microwave window that has the unique property of controlling transmission and reflection based not only on the frequency of an incoming wave but also on the waveform or pulse width. This surface can preferentially pass or reject different kinds of signals, such as short pulses or continuous waves, even if they occur at the same frequency. Such a structure can be used, for example, to allow long communication signals to pass through, while rejecting short radar pulses in the same frequency band. It is related to the classic frequency selective surface, but adds the new dimension of waveform selectivity, which is only possible by introducing nonlinear electronics into the surface. Thus, our study is expected to provide new solutions to both fundamental and applied electromagnetic issues ranging from traditional antenna design and wireless communications to emerging areas such as cloaking, perfect lenses, and wavefront shaping., Comment: 34 pages

We present a new electromagnetic mode that forms at the interface between two planar surfaces laid side by side in free space, effectively guiding energy along an infinitesimal, one-dimensional line. It is shown that this mode occurs when the boundaries have complementary surface impedances, and it is possible to control the mode confinement by altering their values correspondingly. The mode exhibits singular field enhancement, broad bandwidth, direction-dependent polarization, and robustness to certain defects. As a proof-of-concept, experimental results in the microwave regime are provided using patterned conducting sheets. Our proposed effective-medium-based approach is general, however, thus allowing for potential implementation up to optical frequencies. We present the first use of a waveform-dependent absorbing metasurface for high-power pulsed surface currents. The new type of nonlinear metasurface, composed of circuit elements including diodes, is capable of storing high power pulse energy to dissipate it between pulses, while allowing propagation of small signals. Interestingly, the absorbing performance varies for high power pulses but not for high power continuous waves (CWs), since the capacitors used are fully charged up. Thus, the waveform dependence enables us to distinguish various signal types (i.e. CW or pulse) even at the same frequency, which potentially creates new kinds of microwave technologies and applications.

Electromagnetic properties depend on the composition of materials, i.e. either angstrom scales of molecules or, for metamaterials, subwavelength periodic structures. Each material behaves differently in accordance with the frequency of an incoming electromagnetic wave due to the frequency dispersion or the resonance of the periodic structures. This indicates that if the frequency is fixed, the material always responds in the same manner unless it has nonlinearity. However, such nonlinearity is controlled by the magnitude of the incoming wave or other bias. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish different incoming waves at the same frequency. Here we present a new concept of circuit-based metasurfaces to selectively absorb or transmit specific types of waveforms even at the same frequency. The metasurfaces, integrated with schottky diodes as well as either capacitors or inductors, selectively absorb short or long pulses, respectively. The two types of the circuit elements are then combined to absorb or transmit specific waveforms in between. This waveform selectivity gives us another freedom to control electromagnetic waves in various fields including wireless communications, as our simulation reveals that the metasurfaces are capable of varying bit error rates in response to waveforms.
