This study aimed to investigate the amorphous stabilization of BCS Class II drugs using mesoporous silica as a carrier to produce amorphous solid dispersions. Ibuprofen, fenofibrate, and budesonide were selected as model drugs to evaluate the impact of molecular weight and partition coefficient on the solid state of drug-loaded mesoporous silica (MS) particles. The model drugs were loaded into three grades of MS, SYLYSIA SY730, SYLYSIA SY430, and SYLYSIA SY350, with pore diameters of 2.5 nm, 17 nm, and 21 nm, respectively, at 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1, carrier to drug ratios, and three different loading concentrations using solvent immersion and spray drying techniques. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms of SY430 and SY350 samples exhibited melting point depressions indicating constricted crystallization inside the pores, whereas SY730 samples with melting points matching the pure API may be a result of surface crystallization. Powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) diffractograms showed all crystalline samples matched the diffraction patterns of the pure API indicating no polymorphic transitions and all 3:1 ratio samples exhibited amorphous halo profiles. Hydrophobic coatings have wide applications, but face challenges in food flexible packaging in terms of poor adhesion and inadequate wear resistance. Health hazards and poor adhesion drive the search for novel hydrophobic coatings substitutes. Here, we introduced rationally synthesized carnauba wax-SiO 2 microspheres as a component to composite polyethylene (PE) film construction, and created a wear-resistant hydrophobic composite PE film via the blown film technique. The resultant hydrophobic composite film demonstrated an enhanced water contact angle from 86° to above 100°, coupled with favorable mechanical properties such as wear resistance, tensile strength and effective barrier performance against water vapor and oxygen. Background: The determination of (nano)particulate content from food additives has been a long-standing concern for authorities since it is of vital importance for ensuring food safety, regulatory adherence, and transparent consumer information. Nonetheless, a critical step in these determinations is the refinement of a careful and quantitative extraction process for particles that may be found within complex matrices such as confectionery products. The development of new technologies and analysis methods for nanoparticles is ongoing. Whereas new technologies and analysis methods for nanoparticles are being developed, the extraction of (nano)particles of different nature has not been adequately addressed in the literature., Results: A simple aqueous extraction procedure was found to be suitable for the simultaneous extraction of TiO 2 and SiO 2 (nano)particles from five confectionery products. Neither the extraction agents (water, lipase, pancreatin and Tris-HCl solutions) nor the methods (manual shaking, ultrasonic bath, ultrasonic probe and ultrafiltration) altered the size, morphology, or aggregation state of either type of particle, as revealed by the micrographs obtained by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Single-particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS) determined that the optimal conditions for extracting both types of particles involve manual shaking using water as the solvent. Furthermore, the use of enzymes seemed to hinder the determination of both types of particles by spICP-MS. (Nano)particles of TiO 2 and SiO 2 were detected in all the confectionaries, even though the E171 additive was only labeled in one of them. The average percentage of nanoparticulate TiO 2 material in the evaluated products was 30 %, while no nanometer-sized particles of SiO 2 were detected., Significance: Ensuring food safety, regulatory compliance and transparent consumer information relies on getting reliable results that connect with the application of sample treatment procedures for detecting unaltered nanoparticles in food products. To address the potential hazards of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) residues in tea, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor based on functionalized nanomaterials was constructed in this work. Firstly, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were attached on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by the constant potential electrodeposition to form a compound, and it was utilized to provide excellent immobilization sites for complementary DNA (cDNA). Subsequently, composite nanomaterials were synthesized by a one-pot method with aminated Luminol/silver nanoparticles@silica nanospheres (NH 2 -Luminol/Ag@SiO 2 NSs). Finally, NH 2 -Luminol/Ag@SiO 2 NSs was combined with a malathion aptamer (Apt) to obtain signal probes (SPs) for the construction of an aptasensor. The aptasensor had a wide linear range (1×10 -3 -1×10 3 ng/mL) and a low limit of detection (LOD) (0.3×10 -3 ng/mL). It had the virtues of high sensitivity, wonderful stability and excellent specificity, which could be used for the detection of malathion residue in tea. Iron-based adsorbents are commonly used to remove arsenic (As) from water for drinking water purposes. Here, we study the role of biological As(III) oxidation on iron-based adsorbents in filters and its effect on overall As uptake. A lab-scale filter with iron oxide coated sand (IOCS), a commonly used adsorbent, was operated with water containing As(III) and As(V), while water samples were taken periodically over its height. As(III) oxidation initiated after approximately 10 days and increased to a first order rate constant of 0.09 s -1 after 57 days resulting in full oxidation of As(III) in <50 s. Consequently, the filter shifted from an As(III) to an As(V) adsorbing filter. Oxidation was not observed after inhibiting the microbial activity using sodium azide confirming its biogenic nature. This implies that As(III) oxidizing biomass can grow on iron-based adsorbents in water filters without requiring inoculation. As the experimental conditions were similar to full-scale As treatment plants, we believe that biological As(III) oxidation is widely overlooked in these systems. Occurrence of biological oxidation is, however, beneficial for removal, as at pH <8 the adsorption capacity for As(V) can be up to 10-fold higher than for As(III). With these new insights, arsenic treatment using iron-based adsorbents can be further optimized. The demand for safe drinking water is constantly challenged by increasing biohazards. One widely used solution is implementing indoor-operated slow sand filtration (SSF) as one of the final barriers in water production. SSF has gained popularity due to its low energy consumption and efficient removal of biohazards, especially microorganisms, without using chemicals. SSF involves both physical-chemical and biological removal, particularly in the "Schmutzdecke", which is a biofilm-like layer on the sand bed surface. To achieve the optimal performance of SSF, a systematic understanding of the influence of SSF operating parameters on the Schmutzdecke development and filter filtration performance is required. Our study focused on three operational parameters, i.e., sand material, sand size, and the addition of an inoculum (suspension of matured Schmutzdecke), on the mini-scale filters. The effects of these parameters on the Schmutzdecke development and SSF removal performance were studied by biochemical analyses and 16S amplicon sequencing, together with spiking experiments with Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the mini-scale filters. Our results indicate that the mini-scale filters successfully developed Schmutzdeckes and generated bacterial breakthrough curves efficiently. The sand size and material were found to have an impact on Schmutzdecke's development. The addition of inoculum to new filters did not induce significant changes in the microbial community composition of the Schmutzdecke, but we observed positive effects of faster Schmutzdecke development and better removal performance in some inoculated filters. Our study highlights the value of mini-scale filters for SSF studies, which provide insights into Schmutzdecke microbial ecology and bacterial removal with significantly reduced requirements of materials and effort as compared to larger-scale filters. We found that operational parameters have a greater impact on the Schmutzdecke biochemical characteristics and removal performances than on the microbial community composition. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are promising for precise protein separation and purification. However, challenges persist due to their large size, variable configuration, and instability during preparation. Here, a simple silicon self-assembly program was designed to synthesize MIPs without any organic reagents and acid-base catalysis, avoiding the structural damage of protein under severe conditions. In this method, employing hemoglobin (Hb) as a model protein, with tween-20 in emulsification, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the cross-linking agent, along with co-functional monomers 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and benzyl(triethoxy)silane (BnTES), enhanced binding efficacy was achieved. Successful imprinting was evidenced through surface morphology observation and physical/chemical property evaluations of the synthesized MIPs. A series of adsorption experiments were performed to investigate the recognition performance of Hb-MIPs. The Hb-MIPs not only exhibited large adsorption capacity (400 μg/mg) and good imprinting factor (6.09) toward template protein, but also showed satisfactory selectivity for reference proteins. Five cycles of adsorption proved that the Hb-MIPs had good reusability. In addition, the successful isolation of HB from bovine blood indicated that Hb-MIPs were an excellent separation and purification material. Macrocycles play vital roles in supramolecular chemistry and chromatography. 1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol (BINOL)-based chiral polyimine macrocycles are an emerging class of chiral macrocycles that can be constructed by one-step aldehyde-amine condensation of BINOL derivatives with other building blocks. These macrocycles exhibit good characteristics, such as facile preparation, rigid cyclic structures, multiple chiral centers, and defined molecular cavities, that make them good candidates as new chiral recognition materials for chromatographic enantioseparations. In this study, a BINOL-based [2+2] chiral polyimine macrocycle was synthesized by one-step condensation of enantiopure (S)-2,2'-dihydroxy-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-3,3'-dicarboxaldehyde with (1R,2R)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane. The product was modified with 5-bromo-1-pentene and then attached to thiolated silica using click chemistry to construct a new chiral stationary phase (CSP). The enantioselectivity of the new CSP was explored by separating various racemates under normal phase (NP) and reversed phase (RP) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Thirteen racemates and eight racemates were enantioseparated under the two separation modes, respectively, including chiral alcohols, phenols, esters, ketones, amines, and organic acids. Among them, nine racemates achieved baseline separation under NP-HPLC and seven racemates achieved baseline separation under RP-HPLC. High resolution separation was observed with benzoin (Rs = 5.10), epinephrine (Rs = 4.98), 3-benzyloxy-1,2-propanediol (Rs = 4.42), and 4,4'-dimethylbenzoin (Rs = 4.52) in NP-HPLC, and with 4-methylbenzhydrol (Rs = 4.72), benzoin ethyl ether (Rs = 3.79), 1-phenyl-1-pentanol (Rs = 3.68), and 1-(3-bromophenyl)ethanol (Rs = 3.60) in RP-HPLC. Interestingly, the CSP complemented Chiralcel OD-H, Chiralpak AD-H, and CYCLOBOND I 2000 RSP columns for resolution of these test racemates, separating several racemic compounds that could not be well separated by the three commercially available columns. The influences of injected sample amount on separation were also evaluated. It was found that the column exhibited excellent stability and reproducibility after hundreds of injections, and the relative standard deviations (n = 5) of the retention time and resolution were less than 0.49% and 0.69%, respectively. Styrene-maleic acid (SMA) copolymer has received much attention for its excellent solubilization characteristics. In this work, SMA copolymer brush-based chromatographic stationary phases were exploited and developed for the first time. First, SMA copolymer brush was in situ grown on the surface of spherical silica via living/controlled reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization method. Subsequently, as a proof-of-concept demonstration, the copolymer was esterified by diethylene glycol mono-2-ethylhexyl ether (DGME) and 2-(2-ethylhexyloxy) ethanol (EHOE), respectively. The obtained Sil-SMA-DGME and Sil-SMA-EHOE copolymer-brush chromatographic stationary phases were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The chromatographic retention mechanism indicated that both the two packed columns exhibited hydrophilic/reverse mixed-mode retention modes. The maximum column efficiency was up to 71,000 N/m. The chromatographic separation performance evaluation indicated that the novel kind of stationary phases had excellent separation capabilities for hydrophilic, hydrophobic compounds and phospholipid standards. In addition, by combination with mass spectrometry identification, the Sil-SMA-DGME column was further exploited for separation and identification of phospholipids in human lung cancer cells. Totally, 9 classes including 186 phospholipid species were successfully identified. A covalent organic framework (COF) was gown on porous silica with 1,3,5-tri(4-aminophenyl)benzene and 2,5-divinyl-1,4-phenyldiformaldehyde as monomers, and two ionic liquids were grafted to COF by a click reaction. The materials before and after the modification of ionic liquids were separately packed into solid-phase extraction columns (10 × 4.6 mm, i.d.), which were coupled with liquid chromatography to construct online analysis systems. The extraction mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bisphenols, diphenylalkanes and benzoic acids were investigated on these materials. There were π-π, hydrogen-bond and electrostatic interactions on ionic liquid-functionalized sorbents. After the comparison among these materials, the best sorbent was used, and the analytical method was established and successfully applied to the detection of some estrogens from actual samples. For the analytical method, the detection limit was as low as 0.005 μg L -1 , linear range was as wide as 0.017-10.0 μg L -1 , and enrichment ratio was as high as 3635. Background: Food safety has become an essential aspect of public concern and there are lots of detection means. Liquid chromatography plays a dominating role in food safety inspection because of its high separation efficiency and reproducibility. However, with the increasing complexity of real samples and monitoring requirements, conventional single-mode chromatography would require frequent column replacement and cannot separate different kinds of analytes on a single column simultaneously, which is costly and time-consuming. There is a great need for fabricating mixed-mode stationary phases and validating the feasibility of employing mixed-mode stationary phases for food safety inspection., Results: This work fabricated multifunctional stationary phases for liquid chromatography to determine diverse food additives under the mixed mode of RPLC/HILIC/IEC. Two dicationic ionic liquid silanes were synthesized and bonded onto the silica gel surface. The functionalized silica was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Both columns provide satisfactory separation performance towards 6 hydrophilic nucleosides, 4 hydrophobic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and 5 anions. Great repeatability of retention (RSD <0.1 %) and column efficiency (100330 plate/m) were obtained. Thermomechanical analysis and linear solvation energy relationship investigated the retention mechanism. Finally, the better in two prepared columns was employed to separate and determine the contents of NO 2 - and NO 3 - in vegetables(highest 4906 mg kg -1 NO 3 - in spinach), preservatives in bottled beverages (180.8 mg kg -1 sodium benzoate in soft drink), and melamine in milk with satisfactory performance and recovery rates ranging from 96.4 % to 105.6 %., Significance: This work developed a novel scheme for preparing mixed-mode stationary phases by dicationic ionic liquid which provides great separation selectivity. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) exhibits several pharmacological activities with potential benefits for human health, however, it has low oral bioavailability. A promising approach is to transport EGCG in a nanostructured system to protect it until it reaches the site of action and also allow combining chemotherapy with phototherapy to improve its therapeutic efficiency. The aim of this work was to synthesize GNR@mSiO 2 -NH 2 /EGCG and characterize the adsorption process, its antioxidant activity, properties and photothermal stability, for its potential use in chemo-photothermal therapy. The nanosystem presented good encapsulation efficiency (19.2 %) and EGCG loading capacity (6.0 %). The DPPH• free radical scavenging capacity (RSA) and chelating activity of the nanosystem was 60.7 ± 6.9 % and 71.0 ± 6.4 % at an EGCG equivalent concentration of 1 µg/mL and 30 µg/mL, respectively. The core-shell NPs presented a good photothermal transduction efficiency of 17 %. EGCG free, as well as its RSA and chelating activity, remained stable after NIR irradiation (808 nm, 7 W/cm 2 ). The morphology of GNR@mSiO 2 remained intact after being irradiated with NIR, however, ultrasmall gold NPs could be observed, probably a product of photocracking of GNR. In the current study, a tumor microenvironment responsive (TME-responsive) copper peroxide-mesoporous silica core-shell structure with H 2 O 2 self-supplying ability was fabricated for targeted ferroptosis/chemotherapy against metastatic breast cancer. At the first stage, copper peroxide nanodot was synthesized and subsequently coated with mesoporous organosilica shell. After (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTMS) functionalization of the organosilica shell, doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded in the mesoporous structure of the nanoparticles and then, heterofunctional COOH-PEG-Maleimide was decorated on the surface through EDC/NHS chemistry. Afterward, thiol-functionalized AS1411 aptamer was conjugated to the maleimide groups of the PEGylated nanoparticles. In vitro study illustrated ROS generation of the system in the treated 4 T1 cell. Cellular uptake and cytotoxicity experiments showed enhanced internalization and cytotoxicity of the targeted system comparing to non-targeted one. The in vivo study on ectopic 4 T1 tumor induced in Female BALB/c mice showed ideal therapeutic effect of Apt-PEG-Silica-DOT@DOX with approximately 90 % tumor suppression in comparison with 50 % and 25 % tumor suppression for PEG-Silica-DOT@DOX and PEG-Silica-DOT. Moreover, Apt-PEG-Silica-DOT@DOX provide favorable characteristics for biosafety issues concerning the rate of survival and loss of body weight. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have long been globally distributed, and almost worldwide people are exposed to varying degrees of PAHs. Aqueous medium is an important transmission route of PAHs, but the detection of PAHs in aqueous environment has been a challenge. Herein, a magnetic hypercrosslinked polymer microsphere (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -PS@HCP) was developed for the effective detection of PAHs. Under the effect of multiple factors (hydrophilicity, intermolecular force and molecular volume), Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -PS@HCP shows excellent performance on the enrichment of five PAHs in aqueous environment. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -PS@HCP was used to capture PAHs in city river of plateau lake. In-depth data analysis showed that factory activities and traffic emissions are the main pollution sources of PAHs. Ecological, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks are almost within the safe range. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of PAHs in children are higher than adults, which needs to be taken seriously. This method breaks the dilemma that it is difficult to enrich weakly hydrophilic pollutants in aqueous media, and complements important pathways for tracing sources of pollutants and assessing associated risks. Herein, a novel sandwich electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor was developed based on the resonance energy transfer (RET) with iridium complex doped silicate nanoparticles (SiO 2 @Ir) as energy donor and gold nanoparticles modified TiVC MXene (AuNPs@TiVC) as energy acceptor. Strong anodic ECL signal of SiO 2 @Ir was obtained through both co-reactant pathway and annihilation pathway. Electrochemical results showed that SiO 2 @Ir has good electron transfer rate and large specific surface area to immobilize more aptamers. AuNPs@TiVC apparently quenched the ECL signal of SiO 2 @Ir due to the ECL resonance energy transfer between them. In the presence of kanamycin (KAN), a sandwich type sensor was formed with the aptamer probes as connecters between the donor and the acceptor, resulting in the decrease of ECL intensity. Under the optimal condition, KAN could be sensitively detected in the range of 0.1 pg/mL to 10 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 24.5 fg/mL. Electrospinning is a versatile and straightforward technique to produce nanofibrous mats with different morphologies. In addition, by optimizing the solution, processing, and environmental parameters, three-dimensional (3D) nanofibrous scaffolds can also be created using this method. In this work, the preparation and characterization of bioactive glass (BG) scaffolds based on the SiO 2 -CaO sol-gel system, a biomaterial with a highly reactive surface, is reported. The electrospinning technique was combined with sol-gel methods to obtain nanofibrous 3D cotton wool-like scaffolds. The addition of zinc and copper ions to the silica-calcia system was examined, and the influence of these ions on the material properties and characteristics was investigated by various characterization techniques, from morphological and chemical properties to antibacterial and wound closure capability, cell viability and ion release. In this paper, a versatile heterogeneous nanocatalyst was fabricated employing a self-assembly technique. To commence, Fe 3 O 4 MNPs were coated with a thin layer of SiO 2 using the stobbers method. Subsequently, the surface was further functionalized with 3-CPMS, followed by a reaction with a Schiff base. Finally, nickel NPs were deposited on the surface through in situ deposition, forming the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @3-CPMS@L-Ni magnetic nanocatalyst. The architecture of this magnetic nanocatalyst was meticulously characterized through an array of sophisticated techniques: XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, BET and VSM. The XRD diffraction pattern confirmed the presence of Fe 3 O 4 MNPs, SiO 2 , and Ni peaks, providing evidence for successful synthesis. Moreover, the successful functionalization with a Schiff base was demonstrated by the presence of an azomethane peak in the FTIR spectra of the synthesized nanocatalyst. The fabricated nanocatalyst was adeptly utilized for the reduction of 4-NP, NB, and MO demonstrating a remarkably elevated rate of catalytic efficacy. Moreover, this catalyst was effortlessly retrievable through the application of an external magnet, and it maintained its catalytic prowess across at least six consecutive cycles. Studying the adsorption behavior of cationic surfactants can help to develop more effective strategies to limit their dispersion in the environment. However, there have few studies on the adsorption of cationic surfactants from the perspective of critical micelle concentration (CMC). In this study, with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and octadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) serving as the model cationic surfactants, the effect of CMC on the adsorption behavior of cationic surfactant onto the surface of sodium alginate/silica (SA/SiO 2 ) microspheres was systematically revealed. The adsorption mechanism relative to CMC was investigated under different conditions, including surfactant concentration, pH, temperature, and adsorption time. The results suggest that at identical concentrations, the smaller the CMC value of the cationic surfactants, the greater the adsorption amount (q t ). q t for CTAB and OTAB were 583.2 and 678.0 mg/g respectively, with the concentration higher than their CMC value. When the concentration was lower than the CMC value of the cationic surfactants, q t for CTAB and OTAB were 123.2 and 138.7 mg/g, respectively. The CMC value of CTAB was lower than that of OTAB under identical conditions, suggesting that the adsorption of cationic surfactants is related to their CMC. Chemotherapy is the main treatment for bladder cancer, but drug resistance and side effects limit its application and therapeutic effect. Herein, we constructed doxorubicin (DOX)/COOH-mesoporous silica nanoparticle/polyethylenimine (PEI)/nucleic acid chimeras (DOX/MSN/Chimeras) to reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy drugs and the resistance of bladder cancer cells. Transmission electron microscopy showed that PEI was coated on the DOX/MSN/BSA nanoparticles with a diameter of about 150 nm. DOX/MSN/PEI could control DOX release for over 48 h, and the sudden release rate was significantly lower than DOX/MSN. Immunohistochemical results showed that DOX/MSN/Chimera specifically bound to bladder cancer cells, and markedly inhibited PI3K expression and proliferation of DOX-resistant bladder cancer cells. DOX/MSN/Chimera promoted the apoptosis of drug-resistant bladder cancer cells, which was superior to DOX/MSN/Aptamer or DOX/MSN. We further carried out animal experiments and found that DOX/MSN/Chimera could reduce the volume of transplanted tumors in vivo. Compared with DOX/MSN/Aptamer group, the proliferation rate was significantly decreased and the proportion of apoptotic cells was highly increased. Through the histological observation of kidneys and lungs, we believed that DOX/MSN/Chimera can effectively reduce the damage of chemotherapy drugs to normal tissues. In conclusion, we constructed a COOH-MSN/nucleic acid chimera conjugate for the targeted delivery of siRNA and anti-cancer drugs. The article presents a method for obtaining catalytic systems: SiO 2 -Fe 2 O 3 , SiO 2 -Fe 2 O 3 -Fe and verification of their catalytic properties in the oxidation process of technical soot N550. The process of immobilization of Fe 3+ ions on microsilica-SiO 2 was investigated in the batch system (equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics). The process was aimed at obtaining a system with a developed surface and using less iron while maintaining the same catalysis active surface. In the next stages, the SiO 2 -Fe 3+ systems were modified to obtain SiO 2 -Fe 2 O 3 and SiO 2 -Fe 2 O 3 -Fe materials, which exhibited catalytic properties. To obtain catalytic systems, the processes of Fe 3+ ions sorption, iron oxide precipitation - Fe 2 O 3 and Fe reduction using a plant extract were used. Catalytic systems were applied in the N550 technical soot oxidation process to reduce the conversion temperature and increase its efficiency. The soot oxidation process was carried out in a muffle furnace using variable process parameters, i.e. temperature (450, 475, 500, 525 and 550 o C), time (1, 2 and 3h), type of catalytic system (SiO 2 -Fe 2 O 3 , SiO 2 -Fe 2 O 3 -Fe) and its % content relative to the constant mass of soot (0, 10, 20 and 30%). Crystalline rock is used as the host rock for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Two cationic elements (Cs(I) and Ni(II)) and three anionic elements (Se(IV/VI), Mo(VI), and U(VI)) were selected to comprehensively evaluate the sorption behaviors of these radionuclides on crystalline granite and biotite gneiss. The anionic elements showed weak sorption (log K d (L·kg -1 ) < 1) and little competition effect, while the cationic elements (log K d (L·kg -1 ) = 2-3) showed clear competition (18-98% in K d values) even at low concentrations. Analysis by pseudo-second-order kinetics showed that Cs(I) sorbed at similar rates on both rocks (20% faster on biotite gneiss), but Ni(II) sorbed 190% faster on biotite gneiss than on granite. That is why the retardation factors for Cs(I) and Ni(II) were reversed in the biotite gneiss column compared to their distribution coefficients. Therefore, the sorption kinetics cannot be neglected in groundwater systems with high flow rates. In the desorption column test, the retardation followed the order of the distribution coefficient. Compounds functionalized with hydroxyl and amino groups were found to have good potential for the adsorption of different ions. In this work, a new system of cellulosic chains was amended with amine substitutions and bonded to a magnetic core of NiFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 to form NiFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 -cellulose-NH 2 system. The prepared sample showed suitable magnetic separation and was characterized via XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, and TGA-DTA analyses. The adsorption potential of NiFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 -cellulose-NH 2 system has been investigated on the heavy metals (Cd, Ni, and Pb) removal from a synthetic wastewater environment. The results show that the magnetic property created by the magnetic core increased the recycling potential of the adsorbent and the magnetic core has a positive effect on the absorption potential of the polymer. The adsorption removal of Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II) ions was studied using NiFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 -cellulose-NH 2 systems in different pH, temperatures, metal ion concentrations, and adsorbent dosages. Soil improvement techniques utilizing the metabolic functions of microorganisms, including microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), have been extensively researched over the past few decades as part of bio-inspired geotechnical engineering research. Given that metabolic reactions in microorganisms produce carbonate minerals, an enhanced understanding of microbial interaction with soils could improve the effectiveness of MICP as a soil improvement technique. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of sands on MICP by denitrification to employ MICP for geotechnical soil improvement. Under the coexistence of natural sand and artificial silica sand, nitrate-reducing bacteria were cultured in a mixed liquid medium with nitrate, acetate, and calcium ions at 37 °C. Nitrate reduction occurred only in the presence of natural sand. However, the lack of chemical weathering of the composed minerals likely prevented the progress of bacterial growth and nitrate reduction in artificial silica sands. For natural sand, artificial chemical weathering by acid wash and ferrihydrite coating of the sand improved bacterial growth and accelerated nitrate reduction. The calcium carbonate formation induced by denitrification was also influenced by the state of the minerals in the soil and the nitrate reduction rate. The observed MICP enhancement is due to the involvement of coexisting secondary minerals like ferrihydrite with large specific surface areas and surface charges, which may improve the reaction efficiency by serving as adsorbents for bacteria and electron donors and acceptors in the solid phases, thereby promoting the precipitation and crystallization of calcium carbonate on the surfaces. This crystal formation in the minerals provides valuable insights for improving sand solidification via MICP. Thermochromic wood (TW), a smart material that can respond to temperature changes and store thermal energy, holds broad potential for application in the construction industry. This study fabricated thermochromic poplar (TP) by encapsulating a thermochromic phase change material (TPCM), consisting of tetradecyl myristate and methyl red, within a full poplar-based cellulose/lignin/SiO 2 framework. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicate that the poplar matrix and the incorporated SiO 2 formed an integrated cellulose/lignin/SiO 2 framework, which encapsulated the TPCM within the poplar ducts. The TP exhibits a color change from light purple to dark purple within the temperature range of 30-48 °C, with a pronounced shift at approximately 42 °C, correlating with the sensation of scalding. Thus, TP-based products can alert users to the risk of scalding through a noticeable color change. The full poplar-based framework mitigates the impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the TP and prevents the loss of TPCM during thermal processing. The mechanical properties of TP are enhanced to a strength grade comparable to that of Manchurian ash wood, making it suitable for load-bearing components in wooden structures. Additionally, the average temperature of TP is around 10 °C higher than that of untreated poplar within 25 min after the same thermal treatment. The objective of this study is to develop a drug carrier to overcome the inherent drawbacks of 5-Fluorouracil (5-Fu), including low bioavailability, short half-life, and systemic toxicity. In the present work, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) capped by chitosan (CS) to encapsulate 5-Fu (5-Fu MSNs/CS) were fabricated by the sol-gel process, ultrasonic impregnation, and emulsion cross-linking. The 5-Fu MSNs/CS microspheres exhibit pH-responsive drug release and remarkable drug encapsulation capacity, as well as perfect sphericity, high specific surface area (680.62 cm 2 /g), and uniform particle size (2.64 ± 0.05 μm). The drug-loading content and encapsulation efficiency are 14.12 ± 0.53 % and 82.21 ± 2.13 %, respectively. The cumulative release of 5-Fu from MSNs/CS microspheres is fast and sustained at pH 5.0 (89.56 ± 0.97 %) compared to that at pH 7.4 (57.88 ± 0.91 %) in 96 h, and it is Fickian diffusion controlled. The presence of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in wastewater effluents and natural aquatic systems threatens ecological and human health. While activated carbon-based adsorbents, such as GAC and PAC, are widely used for API removal, they exhibit certain deficiencies, including reduced performance due to the presence of natural organic macromolecules (NOMs) and high regeneration costs. There is growing demand for a robust, stable, and self-regenerative adsorbent designed for API removal in various environments. In this study, we synthesized a self-generating metal oxide nano-composite (S-MGC) containing titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) combined with 3D graphene oxide (GO) to adsorb APIs and undergo regeneration via light illumination. We determined optimal TiO 2 :SiO 2 :GO compositions for the S-MGCs through experiments using a model contaminant, methylene blue. The physical and chemical properties of S-MGCs were characterized, and their adsorption and photodegradation capabilities were studied using five model APIs, including sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine, ketoprofen, valsartan, and diclofenac, both in single-component and multi-component mixtures. In the absence of TiO 2 /SiO 2 , 3D graphene oxide (CGB) displayed better adsorption performance compared to GAC, and S-MGCs further improve CGB's adsorption capacity. This performance remained consistent in two complex water environments: aqueous solutions at varying NOM levels and artificial urine. TiO 2 supported on the GO surface exhibits similar photocatalytic activity to suspended TiO 2 . To solve the problems existing in the clinical application of hypericin (Hyp) and tirapazamine (TPZ), a nano-drug delivery system with synergistic anti-tumor functions was constructed using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) and sodium alginate (SA). The system exhibited excellent stability, physiological compatibility and targeted drug release performance in tumor tissues. In the in vitro and in vivo experiments, Hyp released from MSN killed tumor cells through photodynamic therapy (PDT). The degree of hypoxia in the tumor tissue site was exacerbated, enabling TPZ to fully exert its anti-tumor activity. Silica scaling imposes a significant limitation on the efficacy of membrane distillation (MD) in the treatment of hypersaline wastewater. The complex dynamic behaviors of silica at the membrane-water-air interface and the poor understanding of molecular-level anti-scaling mechanism hampers the development of effective antiscalants for mitigating silica scaling in MD. Despite using functional polymers to prevent silica polymerization, the inhibition mechanisms are unclear. Here, the kinetic process of silica scaling during MD and the potential anti-scaling mechanism of poly-ethylenimine (PEI) were investigated at the molecular level via molecular dynamics simulations. The investigation reveals that silica scales were more likely to adhere to the water-PTFE interface with a free energy potential well of -40.0 kJ mol -1 than that of the water-air interface with a -11.4 kJ mol -1 potential well. Silica scales falling at the water-air interface also migrated on the water-air interface until captured by the PTFE membrane. In this work, a representative functional amino-rich polymer PEI was constructed as silica inhibitors and its scale inhibition mechanism was elucidated. Notably, the inclusion of PEI increased the free-energy barriers for the silica polymerization reaction from 72.0 kJ mol -1 to 86.1 kJ mol -1 , compared to scenarios without the antiscalants. Moreover, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) model of ΔG water-silica was developed to predict the anti-scaling efficiencies of typical antiscalants based on machine learning method. Due to its adverse health and environmental impacts, groundwater contamination by toxic organic compounds such as chlorinated solvents is a global concern. The slow-release permanganate gel (SRP-G) is a mixture of potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 ) and colloidal silica solution. The SRP-G is designed to radially spread after injection via wells, gelate in situ to form gel barriers containing permanganate (MnO 4 - ), and slowly release MnO 4 - to treat plumes of chlorinated solvents in groundwater. This study aimed to characterize the effects of temperature on the dynamics of SRP-G in saturated porous media. In gelation batch tests, the viscosity of ambient-temperature (24 °C) SRP-G with 30 g/L-KMnO 4 was 21 cP at 70 min, 134 cP at 176 min, and peaked at 946 cP to solidification at 229 min. The viscosity of low-temperature (4 °C) SRP-G with 30 g/L-KMnO 4 was 71 cP at 273 min, 402 cP at 392 min, and peaked at 818 cP to solidification at 485 min. A similar pattern, e.g., increased gelation lag time with low-temperature SRP-G, was observed for SRP-Gs with 40 g/L, 50 g/L, and 60 g/L KMnO 4 . In flow-through tests using a glass column filled with saturated sands, injection rates, spreading rates, and release durations were 0.6 mL/min, 46 mm/min, and 33 h for KMnO 4 (aq), 0.2 mL/min, 2 mm/min, and 38 h for ambient-temperature SRP-G, and 0.4 mL/min, 16 mm/min, and 115 h for low-temperature SRP-G, respectively. These results indicated that the injectability, injection rate, and gelation lag time of SRP-G and the size, release rate, and release duration of MnO 4 - gel barriers can be increased at low temperatures. Nanomaterial-based synergistic antibacterial agents are considered as promising tools to combat infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Herein, multifunctional mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN)-based nanocomposites were fabricated for synergistic photothermal/photodynamic/chemodynamic therapy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MSN loaded with indocyanine green (ICG) as a core, while Prussian blue (PB) nanostructure was decorated on MSN surface via in situ growth method to form a core-shell nanohybrid (MSN-ICG@PB). Upon a near infrared (NIR) laser excitation, MSN-ICG@PB (200 μg mL -1 ) exhibited highly efficient singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation and hyperthermia effect (48.7℃). In the presence of exogenous H 2 O 2 , PB with peroxidase-like activity promoted the generation of toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) to achieve chemodynamic therapy (CDT). PTT can greatly increase the permeability of bacterial lipid membrane, facilitating the generated 1 O 2 and •OH to kill bacteria more efficiently. Under NIR irradiation and exogenous H 2 O 2 , MSN-ICG@PB (200 μg mL -1 ) with good biocompatibility exhibited a synergistic antibacterial effect against MRSA with high bacterial killing efficiency (>98 %). Responsive release systems have received extensive attention to enhance pesticide utilization efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. In this study, pH/GSH dual responsive release system based on brush-like silica (bSiO 2 ) carriers was constructed to enhance the utilization of pesticides. The bSiO 2 carriers present core-shell structure, length of 550 nm, diameter of 350 nm and shell thickness of 100 nm. The carrier had a high pesticide loading (20.0 %, w/w) for dinotefuran (Din). After loading Din, zein was covalently linked with cysteine-bridge to seal the loaded pesticides (namely Din@bSiO 2 @Zein). The Din@bSiO 2 @Zein exhibited superior foliar affinity, retention and photostability, and retention rate still remain above 95 % with 220 min UV irradiation. Din@bSiO 2 @Zein displayed pH/GSH responsive release and the cumulative release within 92 h was up to 81 % under pH=9/C GSH =6 mM, mimicking the microenvironment of lepidopteran. The Din@bSiO 2 @Zein possessed good control efficacy against Plutella xylostella. Appreciably, Din@bSiO 2 @Zein could be transported bi-directionally to various regions of tobacco plants within 24 h, which had potential to promote pesticide efficacy. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles were synthesized using a microemulsion-assisted sol-gel method, and calcium, gallium or a combination of both, were used as dopants. The influence of these metallic ions on the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles was investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, as well as N 2 adsorption-desorption methods. The presence of calcium had a significant impact on the morphology and textural features of the nanoparticles. The addition of calcium increased the average diameter of the nanoparticles from 80 nm to 150 nm, while decreasing their specific surface area from 972 m 2 /g to 344 m 2 /g. The nanoparticles of all compositions were spheroidal, with a disordered mesoporous structure. An ion release study in cell culture medium demonstrated that gallium was released from the nanoparticles in a sustained manner. In direct contact with concentrations of up to 100 μg/mL of the nanoparticles, gallium-containing nanoparticles did not exhibit cytotoxicity towards pre-osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells. Moreover, in vitro cell culture tests revealed that the addition of gallium to the nanoparticles enhanced osteogenic activity. Simultaneously, the nanoparticles disrupted the osteoclast differentiation of RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The challenges posed by traditional treatments can be addressed with the help of nanotechnology advancements. In this study, Co, Cu, and Ag-were doped into silica nanoparticles. Then the synthesized monometallic silica nanohybrids were combined to formulate heterometallic silica nanohybrids, characterized structurally and morphologically, compared, and evaluated for antifungal activity based on their individual and synergistic activity. The antifungal assays were conducted by using ATCC cultures of Candida albicans and QC samples of Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum gypseum, and Aspergillus niger. The MIC (ranging from 49.00 to 1560.00 μg/mL), MFC (ranging from 197.00 to 3125.00 μg/mL), IC 50 values (ranging from 31.10 to 400.80 μg/mL), and FICI of nanohybrids were determined and compared. Moreover, well diffusion assay was performed. ABTS assay and DPPH assay were conducted to investigate the radical scavenging activity (RSA) of nanohybrids. SEM analysis clearly evidenced the structural deformations of each fungal cells and spores due to the treatment with trimetallic nanohybrid. Microfluidics plays a pivotal role in organ-on-chip technologies and in the study of synthetic cells, especially in the development and analysis of artificial cell models. However, approaches that use synthetic cells as integral functional components for microfluidic systems to shape the microenvironment of natural living cells cultured on-chip are not explored. Here, colloidosome-based synthetic cells are integrated into 3D microfluidic devices, pioneering the concept of synthetic cell-based microenvironments for organs-on-chip. Methods are devised to create dense and stable networks of silica colloidosomes, enveloped by supported lipid bilayers, within microfluidic channels. These networks promote receptor-ligand interactions with on-chip cultured cells. Furthermore, a technique is introduced for the controlled release of growth factors from the synthetic cells into the channels, using a calcium alginate-based hydrogel formation within the colloidosomes. To demonstrate the potential of the technology, a modular plug-and-play lymph-node-on-a-chip prototype that guides the expansion of primary human T cells by stimulating receptor ligands on the T cells and modulating their cytokine environment is presented. Objective: The purpose of this study was to synthesize Al-doped mesoporous silica spheres (Al-MSSs) and evaluate the effect of them as functional fillers on the mechanical properties and aging resistance of dental resin composites., Methods: Al-MSSs were prepared by a two-step method. The effect of Al-MSSs on the performance of the composites was evaluated using neat resin matrix, commercial composites 3M Z350XT and samples containing mesoporous silica spheres (MSSs) and nonporous silica spheres (NSSs) as control. The neat resin matrix consisted of resin monomer (Bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 49.5/49.5, wt%) and photoinitiator (camphor quinone/Ethyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate, 0.2/0.8, wt%). The mechanical properties (flexural strength, flexural modulus, compressive strength and microhardness) of them were evaluated by a universal testing machine and microhardness tester. The mechanical stabilities of the prepared composites in wet environment were evaluated by immersing them in deionized water at 37 °C. In addition, we evaluated the effect of Al-MSSs on other properties of the dental resin composites such as polymerization shrinkage, degree of conversion, curing depth, contact angle, water sorption and solubility according to ISO 4049: 2019., Results: The synthesized Al-MSSs possessed good dispersibility with an average particle size of about 505 ± 16 nm. The mechanical properties of resin composites gradually increased with the increase of the loading amounts of inorganic fillers. The reinforcing effect of Al-MSSs was similar to that of MSSs and better than that of the NSSs groups at the same filler loading. After aging in deionized water at 37 °C for 30 days, the mechanical properties of all resin composites decreased. However, the decrease percentage of the composites filled with Al-MSSs was significantly lower than the other groups, indicating that the stability of the dental composites in wet environments was significantly improved by the Al-MSSs fillers. Quartzite caves located on table-top mountains (tepuis) in the Guyana Shield, are ancient, remote, and pristine subterranean environments where microbes have evolved peculiar metabolic strategies to thrive in silica-rich, slightly acidic and oligotrophic conditions. In this study, we explored the culturable fraction of the microbiota inhabiting the (ortho)quartzite cave systems in Venezuelan tepui (remote table-top mountains) and we investigated their metabolic and enzymatic activities in relation with silica solubilization and extracellular hydrolytic activities as well as the capacity to produce antimicrobial compounds. Eighty microbial strains were isolated with a range of different enzymatic capabilities. More than half of the isolated strains performed at least three enzymatic activities and four bacterial strains displayed antimicrobial activities. The antimicrobial producers Paraburkholderia bryophila CMB&#95;CA002 and Sphingomonas sp. MEM&#95;CA187, were further analyzed by conducting chemotaxonomy, phylogenomics, and phenomics. While the isolate MEM&#95;CA187 represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas imawarii sp. nov. is proposed, P. bryophila CMB&#95;CA002 is affiliated with a few strains of the same species that are antimicrobial producers. Chemical analyses demonstrated that CMB&#95;CA002 produces ditropolonyl sulfide that has a broad range of activity and a possibly novel siderophore. Although the antimicrobial compounds produced by MEM&#95;CA187 could not be identified through HPLC-MS analysis due to the absence of reference compounds, it represents the first soil-associated Sphingomonas strain with the capacity to produce antimicrobials. Biosilica (BS) and spongin (SPG) from marine sponges are highlighted for their potential to promote bone regeneration. Moreover, 3D printing is introduced as a technology for producing bone grafts with optimized porous structures, allowing for better cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the BS and BS/SPG 3D printed scaffolds and to evaluate the biological effects in vitro. The scaffolds were printed using an ink containing 4 wt.% of sodium alginate. The physicochemical characteristics of BS and BS/SPG 3D printed scaffolds were analyzed by SEM, EDS, FTIR, porosity, evaluation of mass loss, and pH measurement. For in vitro analysis, the cellular viability of the MC3T3-E1 cell lineage was assessed using the AlamarBlue ® assay and confocal microscopy, while genotoxicity and mineralization potential were evaluated through the micronucleus assay and Alizarin Red S, respectively. SEM analysis revealed spicules in BS, the fibrillar structure of SPG, and material degradation over the immersion period. FTIR indicated peaks corresponding to silicon oxide in BS samples and carbon oxide and amine in SPG samples. BS-SPG scaffolds exhibited higher porosity, while BS scaffolds displayed greater mass loss. pH measurements indicated a significant decrease induced by BS, which was mitigated by SPG over the experimental periods. In vitro studies demonstrated the biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity of scaffold extracts. .Also, the scaffolds promoted cellular differentiation. The micronucleus test further confirmed the absence of genotoxicity. A highly efficient ratiometric electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay was explored by bidirectionally regulating the ECL intensity of two luminophors. The immunoassay was conducted in a split-type mode consisting of an ECL detection procedure and a sandwich immunoreaction. The ECL detection was executed using a dual-disk glassy carbon electrode modified with two potential-resolved luminophors (g-C 3 N 4 -Ag and Ru-MOF-Ag nanocomposites), and the sandwich immunoreaction using glucose oxidase (GOx)-modified SiO 2 nanospheres as labels was carried out in a 96-well plate. The Ag nanoparticles (NPs) acted as bifunctional units both for triggering the resonance energy transfer (RET) with g-C 3 N 4 and for accelerating the electron transfer rate of the Ru-MOF-Ag ECL reaction. When the H 2 O 2 catalyzed by GOx in the 96-well plate was transferred to the dual-disk glass carbon electrode, the doped Ag NPs in the two luminophors could be etched, thus destroying the RET between C 3 N 4 and the accelerated reaction to Ru-MOF, resulting in an opposite trend in the ECL signal outputted from the dual disks. Using the ratio of the two signals for quantification, the constructed immunosensor for a model target, i.e. myoglobin, exhibited a low detection limit of 4.7 × 10 -14  g/mL. There has been significant attention on the efficient degradation of pollutants in wastewater using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) photocatalytic methods over the past decade. Herein, we examined the elimination of two different types of water-contaminating dyes, specifically cationic dye methylene blue (MB) and anionic dye methyl orange (MO), through the application of bimetal Cu/Ni-BTC@SiO 2 MOF as high performance photocatalyst. The bimetal Cu/Ni-BTC@SiO 2 photocatalyst was synthesized and characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, TGA, BET, DRS, and VSM techniques. The examination of the impact of different operational factors on the elimination of pollutants involved a comprehensive analysis of variables including the photocatalyst type, initial pollutant concentration, quantity of photocatalyst, and pH levels. The highest removal efficiency for MO and MB dyes by the photocatalyst was found to be 98 and 71%, respectively, within 60 min. In the fifth reaction stage, degradation efficiency for MO and MB was 76 and 56% respectively. Kinetic investigations demonstrated that, in the context of the uptake of MB and MO dyes, the interparticle diffusion, and pseudo-second-order models emerged as possessing the most robust correlation coefficients with the experimental data, registering values of 0.988 and 0.961, respectively. The examination of isotherms reveals that the isotherm models proposed by BET, and Anderson (V) demonstrate the highest level of conformity with the empirical data for the decomposition of MB and MO dyes, correspondingly. Conductive elastomers present desirable qualities for sensing pressure in-vivo, such as high piezoresistance in tiny volumes, conformability and, biocompatibility. Many electrically conductive nanocomposites however, are susceptible to electrical drift following repeated stress cycles and chemical aging. Here we propose an innovative approach to stabilize nanocomposite percolation network against incomplete recovery to improve reproducibility and facilitate sensor calibration. We decouple the tunnelling-percolation network of highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) nanoparticles from the incomplete viscoelastic recovery of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix by inserting minute amounts of insulating SiO 2 nanospheres. SiO 2 nanospheres effectively reduce the number of nearest neighbours at each percolation node switching off the parallel electrical pathways that might become activated under incomplete viscoelastic relaxation. We varied the size of SiO 2 nanospheres and their filling fraction to demonstrate nearly complete piezoresistance recovery when SiO 2 and HOPG nanoparticles have equal diameters (≈400 nm) and SiO 2 and HOPG volume fractions are 1 % and 29.5 % respectively. Glycyrrhizae Radix et rhizome/licorice is a precious herb in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM's polysaccharides are medicinally active. But herbal polysaccharides pose some limitations for topical applications. Therefore, this study aimed to utilize licorice polysaccharide via mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) for anti-acne efficacy in topical delivery. The polysaccharide (GGP) was extracted with a 10 % NaOH solution. Chemical characterization suggested that GGP possesses an Mw of 267.9 kDa, comprised primarily of Glc (54.1 %) and Ara (19.12 %), and probably 1,4-linked Glc as a backbone. Then, MSN and amino-functionalized MSN were synthesized, GGP entrapped, and coated with polydopamine (PDA) to produce nanoparticle cargo. The resulted product exhibited 76 % entrapment efficiency and an in vitro release of 89 % at pH 5, which is usually an acne-prone skin's pH. Moreover, it significantly increased Sebocytes' cellular uptake. GGP effectively acted as an anti-acne agent and preserved its efficacy in synthesized nanoparticles. In vivo, the results showed that a 20 % gel of MSN-NH 2 -GGP@PDA could mediate an inflammatory response via inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and regulating anti-inflammatory cytokines. The MSN-NH 2 -GGP@PDA inhibited TLR2-activated-MAPK and NF-κB pathway triggered by heat-killed P. acnes. As an emerging fluorophore, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have received widespread attention in recent years, but the inherent drawbacks of AIEgens, such as the poor water-solubility and insufficient fluorescence stability in complex environments, restrict their performance in practical applications. Herein, we report a universal strategy based on hydrophobic dendritic mesoporous silica (HMSN) that can integrate different AIE molecules to construct multi-color fluorescent AIE materials. Specifically, HMSN with central radial pores was used as a powerful carrier for direct loading AIE molecules and restricting their intramolecular motions. Due to the pore-domain restriction effect and hydrophobic interaction, the obtained silica-based AIE materials have bright fluorescence with a maximum quantum yield of 68.38%, high colloidal/fluorescence stability, and excellent biosafety. Further, these silica-based AIE materials can be conjugated with functional antibodies to obtain probes with different targetability. After integration with immunomagnetic beads, the prepared detection probes achieved the quantitative detection of cardiac troponin I with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.508 ng/mL. For some aquatic products, pH has been considered a useful index to reflect the changes in materials during the loss of freshness. Based on the inner filter effect (IFE) between deprotonated phenol red (PR) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), UCNPs coated with PR-doped SiO 2 shell were embedded in agarose hydrogel to develop a smartphone-assisted method for pH sensing. With the enhancement of pH response using a phase transfer agent (i.e., tetra butyl ammonium hydroxide, TBAH), the proposed senor realized the colorimetric and fluorescence detection of pH in the range of pH 6.6-8 and pH 6-8, respectively. The sensor also showed satisfied reversibility when switched between pH 6 and 8 for at least 5 cycles. Numerous nanomedicines have been developed recently that can accumulate selectively in tumours due to the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. However, the high interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) in solid tumours limits the targeted delivery of nanomedicines. We were previously able to relieve intra-tumoural IFP by low-frequency non-focused ultrasound (LFNFU) through ultrasonic targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD), improving the targeted delivery of FITC-dextran. However, the accumulation of nanoparticles of different sizes and the optimal acoustic pressure were not evaluated. In this study, we synthesised Cy5.5-conjugated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Cy5.5-MSNs) of different sizes using a one-pot method. The Cy5.5-MSNs exhibited excellent stability and biosafety regardless of size. MCF7 tumour-bearing mice were subjected to UTMD over a range of acoustic pressures (0.5, 0.8, 1.5 and 2.0 MPa), and injected intravenously with Cy5.5-MSNs. Blood perfusion, tumour IFP and intra-tumoural accumulation of Cy5.5-MSNs were analysed. Blood perfusion and IFP initially rose, and then declined, as acoustic pressure intensified. Furthermore, UTMD significantly enhanced the accumulation of differentially sized Cy5.5-MSNs in tumour tissues compared to that of the control group, and the increase was sevenfold higher at an acoustic pressure of 1.5 MPa. Taken together, UTMD enhanced the infiltration and accumulation of Cy5.5-MSNs of different sizes in solid tumours by reducing intra-tumour IFP.

Gastric ulcers are characterized by damage to the stomach lining and are often triggered by substances such as ethanol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Patchouli alcohol (PA) has demonstrated effectiveness in treating gastric ulcers through antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the water insolubility of PA and rapid gastric emptying cause low drug concentration and poor absorption in the stomach, resulting in limited treatment efficacy of PA. This study develops an oral gastroretentive raft forming system (GRFDDS) containing the aminated hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (NH 2 -HMSN) for PA delivery. The application of NH 2 -HMSN can enhance PA-loading capacity and water dispersibility, promoting bio-adhesion to the gastric mucosa and sustained drug release. The incorporation of PA-loaded NH 2 -HMSN (NH 2 -HMSN-PA) into GRFDDS can facilitate gastric drug retention and achieve long action, thereby improving therapeutic effects. The results reveal that NH 2 -HMSN-PA protects the gastric mucosa damage by inhibiting NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis. The GRFDDS, optimized through orthogonal design, demonstrates the gastric retention capacity and sustained drug release, exhibiting significant therapy efficacy in an ethanol-induced acute gastric ulcers model and an aspirin-induced chronic gastric ulcers model through antioxidation, anti-pyroptosis, and anti-inflammation. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are physically and chemically stable inorganic nanomaterials that have been attracting much attention as carriers for drug delivery systems in the field of nanomedicine. In the present study, we investigated the potential of MSN vaccines that incorporate antigen peptides for use in cancer immunotherapy. In vitro experiments demonstrated that fluorescently labeled MSNs accumulated in a line of mouse dendritic cells (DC2.4 cells), where the particles localized to the cytosol. These observations could suggest that MSNs have potential for use in delivering the loaded molecules into antigen-presenting cells, thereby stimulating the host acquired immune system. In vivo experiments demonstrated prolonged survival in mice implanted with ovalbumin (OVA)-expressing lymphoma cells (E.G7-OVA cells) following subcutaneous inoculation with MSNs incorporating OVA antigen peptides. Furthermore, OVA-specific immunoglobulin G antibodies and cytotoxic T lymphocytes were detected in the serum and the spleen cells, respectively, of mice inoculated with an MSN-OVA vaccine, indicating the induction of antigen-specific responses in both the humoral and cellular immune systems. The potential of micron-sized amorphous mesoporous silica particles as a novel controlled release drug delivery system for pulmonary administration has been investigated. Mesoporous silica formulations were demonstrated to provide a narrower particle size distribution and (spherical) shape uniformity compared to commercial micronized formulations, which is critical for repeatable and targeted aerosol delivery to the lungs. The release profiles of a well-known pulmonary drug loaded into mesoporous particles of different mean particle diameters (2.4, 3.9 and 6.3 µm) were analysed after aerosolization in a modified Andersen Cascade Impactor. Systematic control of the release rate of drug loaded into the particles was demonstrated in simulated lung fluid by variation of the mean particle diameter, as well as an enhanced release compared to a commercial micronized formulation. The mesoporous silica formulations all demonstrated an increased release rate of the loaded drug and moreover, under aerosolization from a commercial, low-cost dry powder inhaler (DPI) device, the formulations showed excellent performance, with low retainment and commercially viable fine particle fractions (FPFs). In addition, the measured median mass aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of the different formulations (2.8, 4.1 and 6.2 µm) was shown to be tuneable with particle size, which can be helpful for targeting different regions in the lung. The prompt and accurate point-of-care test (POCT) for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in infected persons or virus-containing environmental samples is of great importance. The present work reports a highly integrated electrochemiluminescence/electrochemical (ECL/EC) sensor for determination of SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses, in which bio-recognition element (SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody), bifunctional probe (tris (2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ )), and amplification material (gold nanoparticles (Au NPs)) are designed into bipolar silica nanochannel array (bp-SNA). bp-SNA consisting of homogeneous two-layer mesoporous silica films bears inner silanol groups and outer amino groups, generating a solid "electrostatic nanocage" for stable confinement of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ and Au NPs inside the nanochannels and further providing functional sites for covalent modification of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody. Owing to the preconcentration capacity of bp-SNA and amplified effect of Au NPs, ECL or EC signals of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ can be remarkably promoted and thereby increase the analytical performance, which can be diminished by immunorecognization of target SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses on the sensing interface. The developed integrated ECL/EC sensor based on Ru@AuNPs/bp-SNA modified solid indium tin oxide electrode enables the sensitive analysis of SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses by ECL mode with a linear range of 50 TU mL -1 -5000 TU mL -1 , as well as the EC mode with a linear range of 100 TU mL -1 -5000 TU mL -1 . Moreover, the designed sensor showed satisfactory results in the analyses of saliva and pond water samples. The incorporation of organic groups into sol-gel silica materials is known to have a noticeable impact on the properties and structure of the resulting xerogels due to the combination of the properties inherent to the organic fragments (functionality and flexibility) with the mechanical and structural stability of the inorganic matrix. However, the reduction of the inorganic content in the materials could be detrimental to their thermal stability properties, limiting the range of their potential applications. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the thermal stability of hybrid inorganic-organic silica xerogels prepared from mixtures of tetraethoxysilane and organochlorinated triethoxysilane precursors. To this end, a series of four materials with a molar percentage of organochlorinated precursor fixed at 10%, but differing in the type of organic group (chloroalkyls varying in the alkyl-chain length and chlorophenyl), has been selected as model case study. The gases and vapors released during the thermal decomposition of the samples under N 2 atmosphere have been analyzed and their components determined and quantified using a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled to a Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer and to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry unit. These analyses have allowed to identify up to three different thermal events for the pyrolysis of the organochlorinated xerogel materials and to elucidate the reaction pathways associated with such processes. The escalating issue of drug abuse poses a significant threat to public health and societal stability worldwide. An on-site drug detection platform is vital for combating drug abuse and trafficking, as it eliminates the need for additional tools, extensive processes, or specialized training. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a fast, sensitive, non-invasive, and reliable multiplex drug testing platform. In this study, we have presented a silica core@dual quantum dot-shell nanocomposite (SI/DQD)-based fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) platform for the highly sensitive and simultaneous point-of-care (POC) detection of methamphetamine (MET) and tramadol (TR). A 3D-printed attachment was designed to integrate optical and electrical components, facilitating the miniaturization of the instrument and reducing both cost and complexity. The device's advanced hardware and effective fluorescence extraction algorithm with waveform reconstruction enable swift, automatic noise reduction and data analysis. SI/DQD nanocomposites were utilized as fluorescent nanotags in the LFIA strips due to their outstanding luminous efficiency and robustness. This LFIA platform achieves impressive detection limits (LODs) of 0.11 ng mL -1 for MET and 0.017 ng mL -1 for TR. The method has also successfully detected MET and TR in complex biological samples, demonstrating its practical application capabilities. The proposed fluorescent LFIA platform, based on SI/DQD technology, holds significant promise for the swift and accurate POC detection of these substances.
